Channel: unknown
[0]
as a small business owner you've
[1]
probably heard a tax write-offs and
[3]
you've probably thought to yourself what
[6]
does it tax write-off because true story
[8]
when do we ever learn about stuff like
[11]
taxes well today I'm teaching you all
[14]
about what tax write-offs are and why
[16]
they matter I've been teaching small
[22]
business owners about business finance
[24]
for over 10 years so if the idea of
[27]
learning about taxes scares you don't
[29]
worry taxes act way cooler than they
[33]
actually are
[33]
once I teach you a few tax basics you'll
[37]
see that you can totally handle the tax
[40]
side of your business
[41]
how do you write offs work write offs
[43]
also known as tax deductions are an
[46]
absolute dreamboat on your taxes because
[48]
they lower your tax liability which
[51]
means that they lower how much your
[54]
final tax bill will be and how much you
[57]
owe the government the reason these
[59]
necessary and ordinary expenses are
[61]
called write-offs or tax deductions is
[64]
because on your taxes you deduct them
[68]
from your total revenue and that gives
[70]
you your taxable profits it looks like
[73]
this total revenue which is just a fancy
[76]
way of saying all your income minus your
[78]
tax deductions equals your taxable
[81]
profits which is essentially your
[82]
personal income so the more tax
[85]
deductions you have the less you're
[87]
going to pay in taxes what is a tax
[90]
write-off now that you know why you
[92]
should love and adore tax write-offs
[95]
let's talk about what a tax write-off is
[98]
attached write-off is also known as a
[100]
tax deduction
[102]
the IRS defines a tax deduction as an
[104]
ordinary and necessary expense for your
[107]
business which sounds a little ambiguous
[110]
so let's break that down
[112]
ordinary means that it's an expense
[114]
that's pretty typical for businesses
[116]
some examples are advertising expenses
[119]
travel meals and supplies most
[123]
businesses will have these types of
[125]
expenses which is why they're called
[126]
ordinary necessary is a little bit
[130]
trickier is an expense that is
[133]
for you to operate your business now
[135]
different industries have different
[137]
needs so while ordinary expenses are
[140]
pretty much the same across all
[142]
businesses necessary expenses will vary
[144]
a photographer's necessary expenses will
[147]
be photography supplies painters
[149]
necessary expenses will be paintbrushes
[152]
a hairstylist necessary expenses will be
[154]
shampoo and hair brushes I think you get
[157]
the gist basically it depends on the
[160]
type of business you have how your
[163]
expense relates to what you do there are
[165]
also tax write-offs I call split
[166]
deductions split deductions are expenses
[169]
that are both personal expenses as in
[171]
not tax deductible and business expenses
[173]
with split deductions you can only write
[176]
off the business portion of the expense
[178]
the personal portion is not deductible
[181]
examples of split deductions are home
[183]
office expenses a percentage of your
[185]
cellphone bill and a percentage of your
[187]
home internet I'm not going to go into
[189]
detail about split deductions but there
[191]
is a blog post linked below called 3
[194]
types of tax deductions and how to track
[195]
them that post goes more in detail about
[198]
split deductions so aren't all business
[201]
expenses tax write-offs um no just
[205]
because it's an expense for your
[207]
business does not mean the IRS will
[209]
classify it as a tax write-off for
[212]
example under under the new tax law
[214]
client entertainment is no longer
[216]
deductible so if you take your client
[218]
out to My Little Ponies on ice you can
[221]
still consider it a business expense
[223]
internally but you cannot claim it as a
[226]
tax deduction most business expenses
[229]
will be tax deductions but it's
[231]
important to know that not every single
[234]
expense will fall under the necessary
[236]
and ordinary umbrella how do I know if I
[239]
can write it off so we've talked a lot
[240]
about necessary and ordinary expenses
[243]
but it can still feel really confusing
[245]
when you're trying to figure out if
[246]
something is really a business expense
[249]
because realtalk as self-employed people
[252]
so much of our personal lives are
[254]
intertwined with our business and of
[257]
course we don't want to be lying on our
[260]
taxes about our deductions or writing
[263]
things off that really aren't business
[265]
expenses so how do you
[267]
sure that you're writing off the right
[269]
expenses well first if it's a legit
[273]
business expense do not fear the tax
[275]
deduction I've talked just so many
[278]
business owners who aren't writing off
[280]
legitimate business expenses because
[282]
they're afraid of the IRS seriously if
[285]
it's necessary or ordinary for your
[287]
business then take the deduction but if
[291]
you're unsure if an expense is actually
[293]
necessary ordinary here are some
[295]
questions you can ask yourself one does
[298]
it have anything to do with my business
[300]
now obviously the answer should be yes
[303]
if it's not yes then you have no
[305]
business trying to make it a tax
[307]
write-off - what does this have to do
[311]
with my business and think this through
[313]
how does this expense relate to your
[315]
daily operations performing your
[317]
services or selling your products three
[320]
is an expense that the IRS has deemed
[324]
non-deductible there's a blog post
[326]
linked below called five write-off
[328]
mistakes that can get you in trouble
[330]
that talks about business expenses that
[332]
people try to write-off but really can't
[336]
for can I justify it to an IRS auditor
[340]
when you get audited you have the chance
[342]
to explain suspicious expenses to your
[344]
auditor if you were talking to an
[346]
auditor do you think you could make a
[349]
compelling case for why this expense is
[352]
related to your business and I say
[353]
compelling I'm not talking about a month
[355]
bunch of mental gymnastics to justify
[358]
something I'm talking about a really
[360]
clear straightforward answer for writing
[363]
it off if not you probably shouldn't
[366]
write it off if you are still unclear
[369]
about an expense keep track of it but
[371]
also make a note to talk to a tax
[373]
professional about the expense also in
[376]
the description I've linked to a bunch
[378]
of blog posts about tax write-offs these
[381]
posts will give you an idea of the types
[383]
of deductions you could be taking for as
