Hello everyone! My name is Stephanie Paul of聽 Paul's Covered Calls doing the Covid-pivot here聽聽
[8]
Replacing my doggies with dollars!聽聽
[11]
Amateur investor and I appreciate your time as聽 I share my stories trades and thought processes.
[20]
This is me. "Hi everyone!" Thank you for joining聽 me . In a previous video dealing with
[27]
cover calls being income stream, I mentioned some聽 short-term goals one of which is golfing during聽聽
[31]
the summer. So a long story even longer, one of my聽 friends would run marathons and half marathons.聽聽
[41]
So when she would come back into the office聽 extremely tired, obviously, it wasn't about her聽聽
[46]
time that she talked about. It was about how many聽 toenails she lost. For me, I'm thinking why聽聽
[53]
run a marathon if you're going to lose toenails.聽 Well, let me just tell you that this previous week,聽聽
[58]
I played two 18's and one 9-hole, three consecutive聽 days of golf. And I almost lost a toenail.聽聽
[65]
I love golf. She loves running.聽 We're willing to make those physical sacrifices聽聽
[73]
for our fun summer events. That's why I聽 do cover calls to play golf (not necessarily聽聽
[80]
to lose toenails). All right! Let's get聽 to it. Let's talk about covered calls instead!
[88]
This is our all-important board of聽 dog-rectors. This is myself and Sweet Pea聽聽
[95]
We're here today to talk about why to do a聽聽
[103]
buy back. Essentially to close your聽 position of an open covered call.
[112]
Again, many reasons as to why to close聽 an open position. And in this particular case聽聽
[119]
we're going to talk about a stock called聽 CLVS. Ii have uh 500 shares of CLVS聽聽
[126]
Quiz question? How many contracts? I have聽 available five (contracts). It happened to have a a stock聽聽
[137]
share price spike. Say that ten times real聽 fast. At that point during that price聽聽
[144]
spike, I decided to roll out of my existing聽 positions and roll up into a different position聽聽
[154]
(different) strike price. Yet a share price that is increasing,聽 all of a sudden your covered calls, even though聽聽
[163]
they should be approaching zero, when they're聽 out of the money (may) actually have greater value
[171]
So those previous slides were candlesticks聽 on the daily. This is my trading view聽snippet.聽
[179]
These are 15 minute candles. 聽 You can see here by the time the market opened,聽聽
[186]
the share price itself went up聽 over a dollar then another dollar聽聽
[193]
Then as the market headed into lunch聽 sort of a flat band and then it retracted聽聽
[198]
a little bit. But it eventually closed 聽 here at just under eight dollars.聽聽
[209]
It was during this time, right here that I decided聽 to close my existing open covered calls, roll out聽聽
[219]
of those existing positions and roll up into聽 a different strike price at a later expiration.
[228]
I also want to mention the reason I did this聽 and was aware of it is that I set a series of聽聽
[235]
alerts. Whenever I have a strike price, say聽 at $6.50, I have some alerts that are down here聽聽
[241]
at $6.00, $6.15, $6.45 and those alerts just went bing,聽 bing, bing. So that drew my attention to聽聽
[252]
the fact that this share price was increasing. I'll聽 also note that because I did receive those alerts,聽聽
[261]
you have to go into your system and re-activate聽 those alerts. So at times you may think聽聽
[268]
that just because a share price drops below your聽(previous) alerts that your alerts are reactivated. In many聽聽
[277]
cases that is not what happens, you have to go back聽 into your system and reset your alerts for this聽聽
[285]
price range in here. That's where聽 I had my alerts and so when I went into (my brokerage acct)
[291]
those alerts had since been gone.聽 They were activated with this聽聽
[296]
price increase. I just want that to聽 have some sort of awareness for you.聽
[302]
Don't expect, come Monday, that these聽 alerts that you set are now valid.
[308]
All right. Let's get to聽it. Here is the green slide聽聽
[312]
As you know, the green slide is the money聽 slide. And it just so happened that there was a聽聽
[320]
price spike on Friday when Ii had聽 some of these covered calls expiring.
[329]
And you'll notice, I had "sell to open."聽 $4 times 2. I received $8.
[341]
That morning "buy to close" 2 of them,聽 two contracts. I had to spend money.聽聽
[349]
But, then I immediately opened up 3 positions (contracts). And look at this at a different聽聽
[357]
strike price $10. When聽 does it expire? The next week.聽聽
[365]
And, if you watch some of my previous videos where聽 I have layers and ladderings, I had a spare聽聽
[372]
covered call contract available. I bought聽 2 (contracts) back but I sold three at $93.
[382]
So do you get that? Plus $4, minus $68, plus $93.聽 When it's all said and done.
[395]
Look at this right here, 12th of March聽 through March 26th, I'm still in the positive $$.
[406]
When you add all this up, plus minus聽 plus, I'm in the positive $29 per contract.
[415]
And that's per contract for these聽 2 contracts. Plus $29 times 2. And then聽聽
[422]
there's one (contract) at the full price of $93. With this聽 action of rolling out and rolling up to the next聽聽
[431]
week. I've actually made some money (5.1% return). Again you聽have some options here to within covered calls to聽聽
[445]
"sell to open," close those positions, and reopen at聽 a different expiration date. This is one of聽聽
[451]
the reasons why and it can happen so quickly.聽 Literally within an hour, another hour,聽聽
[460]
this stock price of CLVS went from under聽 $6.50 to over $8.50 - $2 on expiration day.聽聽
[471]
You can still reap some benefits by closing聽 your positions and opening new ones. 聽
[478]
It's rare that this may happen. But when it does,聽 be prepared for that. If you spend a聽聽
[484]
little bit of money, close your position, open up聽 a new one (covered call), you can actually reap some benefits.聽聽
