Channel: Tiana B. Clewis
[0]
hey dreamers and welcome back to my
[1]
channel where we break down all things
[3]
money so that you can use that money as
[5]
a tool to create a life that you truly
[7]
love and enjoy in this video we're
[10]
talking about common credit repair scams
[12]
and yes I know we've been talking about
[14]
credit a lot lately which is super
[16]
unusual but it keeps coming up in
[18]
conversation so we got to talk about it
[19]
here and so what we're gonna do is we
[21]
got to talk about these credit repair
[23]
scams because if you use the wrong
[25]
credit repair company to fix your credit
[28]
you can end up broke with a worse credit
[30]
score or even in jail the reality is
[34]
that for anyone that's not yet a
[35]
millionaire or maybe working in real
[37]
estate your credit score matters a lot
[40]
and if you've had a history of late debt
[43]
payments maxing out credit cards or even
[45]
defaulting on loans your credit score
[47]
may have taken a total nosedive that
[51]
means you're paying more in interest
[53]
then you have to for access to cash and
[56]
that makes it so much harder to
[58]
accumulate wealth so now millions of
[61]
people are looking for someone to point
[62]
them in the direction of a quick fix for
[65]
their credit score this is why credit
[68]
repair scams are now running rampant I
[70]
see people on social media all the time
[72]
making claims that they can help you
[74]
increase your credit score all the way
[76]
to maybe even a perfect credit score of
[78]
over 800 now don't get me wrong some
[81]
credit repair companies are legit but
[83]
there are many opportunites out there
[85]
that are taking advantage of desperate
[87]
people that don't know how credit works
[89]
or don't understand what the rights are
[91]
well that's where I come in so let's are
[94]
unearthing some of these common scams so
[96]
that you can keep your money and your
[98]
future safe now wait a second before we
[101]
dive into the scamming foolishness of
[103]
some of these so-called credit repair
[104]
agencies let me introduce myself to the
[106]
newbies of the channel I'm Tiana B Lewis
[108]
a financial lifestyle coach who has made
[110]
it her business to help women
[111]
entrepreneurs use money as a tool to
[114]
help them escape that 9 to 5 grind you
[116]
know that grind that sucks the soul out
[118]
of you so that you can now use money as
[120]
a tool to build a life worth living it's
[123]
something that I've been living out each
[124]
every day so if you want to join me on
[126]
this mission go ahead and like this
[128]
video and subscribe to my channel below
[130]
then hit the bell to make sure that
[132]
you're notified
[133]
every time I drop new videos every
[135]
Wednesday and Saturday okay so now let's
[138]
get back to the subject of hand these
[140]
credit repair scams the first scam I
[143]
want you to be on the lookout for and
[145]
the one that's probably the most common
[147]
is the scam where they tell you that
[149]
they're just gonna dispute absolutely
[151]
everything many of these companies are
[153]
going to tell you that there is a way to
[155]
dispute each and every item on your
[158]
credit report and that's just not true
[160]
what they're referencing many times when
[162]
they talk about this is the Fair Credit
[164]
Reporting Act which does say that you
[166]
can dispute things on your credit report
[168]
however there are stipulations on the
[171]
type of things you can dispute you can
[173]
dispute something that's completely
[174]
false
[174]
you can spew something that's inaccurate
[176]
or that's a complete you can also
[178]
dispute anything that cannot be verified
[180]
and that's the loophole that many of
[183]
these companies try to use to tell you
[185]
hey if we just dispute everything then
[188]
maybe there's something that they won't
[190]
be able to show is verified they won't
[193]
be able to show those signature on the
[195]
contract to show that this is a
[197]
legitimate debt and then we can get it
[199]
taken off of your credit score or your
[201]
credit report the reality is that
[203]
disputing everything on your credit
[205]
report even the things you know for a
[207]
fact should be there is unethical and
[209]
it's a fraudulent act and I'm never
[211]
gonna tell you to do something that
[213]
constitutes fraud yeah many of these
[216]
companies will convince you that it's
[217]
a-okay it's no big deal because they
[220]
should have kept the paperwork and yes
[221]
it's true they should have kept the
[223]
paperwork but you signed up for the day
[227]
you agreed to the dead you said you were
[229]
going to do these things and yeah you
[231]
did miss the payment you did default on
[233]
the loan you did stop paying them it's
[236]
just the reality of the situation so I
[238]
know it can be very tempting to say nope
[241]
take it off because I don't want it
[243]
there but if it's real if it's
[244]
legitimate if it's accurate then well
[247]
you should be taking a responsibility
[249]
for that debt and the moment it gets
[251]
taken off just because they didn't keep
[254]
the paperwork is the moment that you are
[256]
now lying on your credit report and to
[259]
everyone that has to make a decision
[260]
based on it another scam is when they
[263]
tell you to stop paying your debts
[264]
because they want you
[266]
to pay them and they will pay the debts
[269]
for you now this one can be a little
[271]
obvious the truth is there's many
[273]
companies that when they tell you this
[275]
they don't pay the debts they just take
[277]
your money and they run they disappear
[279]
all of a sudden they're not answering
[281]
the number that you've been calling the
[283]
emails start bouncing back you can't get
[285]
anyone on the phone all you can ever get
[287]
is a voicemail box that's probably full
[290]
because they haven't been checking in
[291]
this scam has gotten a lot of people and
[294]
has jacked many many people for lots and
[297]
lots of money instead of you giving them
[300]
complete control over your debts and how
[303]
your debts are paid they need to be
[305]
working with you as a partner they
[307]
should be helping you stay on time with
[309]
your debt payments they should be
[311]
helping you figure out how much money
[313]
you should be giving to this company
[314]
should I be making a phone call to that
[316]
company to create some sort of
[317]
settlement they should be helping you
[319]
with those things they shouldn't just
[321]
say give me all the money and we'll make
[323]
the payments for you that's a very
[325]
dangerous game they need to be your
[327]
partner they need to be educating you
[329]
and in fact if they're not being your
[331]
partner if they're not educating you
[332]
they're actually setting you up for
[334]
failure because what's going to happen
[336]
is that you've gotten used to them
[338]
taking care of your debt so that your
[339]
credit score goes up and then when your
[342]
credit score is where you wanted to be
[344]
you have not changed your behavior and
[346]
because your behavior has not changed
[348]
you're probably going to end up right
[350]
back in the same position that you were
[352]
when you got that credit repair company
[354]
you might even be in a worse financial
[356]
position because your behavior has not
[359]
changed and you go Wilin I've seen it
[362]
many many times people do it when it
[364]
comes to debt with credit cards for
[366]
example you hear about debt
[367]
consolidation loans or you take all of
[369]
the money off of your credit cards you
[371]
put it on this loan but then you don't
[373]
cross the credit cards and then you're
[375]
like paying off that debt consolidation
[376]
loan but then you start racking up the
[379]
debts on the credit card same concept
[382]
applies here you're in a worse financial
[384]
situation because you never changed your
[388]
behavior so one you run the risk of them
[390]
running away with your money and not
[392]
actually paying the debts which can give
[394]
you a worse credit score but then you
[396]
also run the risk that even if they are
[398]
legit they're not educating
[400]
you they're not teaching you how to do
[401]
this on your own and you're ultimately
[403]
going to end up probably back in the
[405]
same position or in a worse position
[407]
later on because your behavior never
[409]
change and you did the same foolishness
[411]
that got you in trouble in the first
[414]
place so if they tell you to stop paying
[416]
all your debts and to paint them instead
[418]
cuz they'll pay it for you know that
[420]
that's a scam and even if it's not
[423]
actually a scam even if they are
[425]
actually going to pay the debts for you
[427]
it's going to be something that's gonna
[428]
be detrimental for you in the end
[430]
because your behavior has not made the
[432]
necessary changes to protect yourself
[434]
from needing them again in the future
[436]
now the next scam and I have to admit
[438]
this one can be really really tempting
[440]
what they'll do is they'll tell you that
[443]
they are going to get you a brand new
[444]
social security number a brand new
[446]
identity and you can just start over
[448]
with brand new and fresh credit tell me
[452]
that's not tempting to you who doesn't
[455]
want to start over you look at the
[457]
message you've made with your finances
[458]
the mess you've made which are credit
[460]
and you wish you could just wipe the
[462]
entire slate clean and just be free in
[465]
fact if you've ever looked at your
[467]
credit and said I want a do-over let me
[470]
know in the comments by typing just that
[472]
I want a do-over the idea of giving you
[476]
a new social security number and a new
[478]
identity is all about just having that
[480]
clean slate you have no credit history
[482]
there is nothing good there's nothing
[484]
bad you can just start over with brand
[486]
new habits that are good habits we had
[488]
our positive habits to build your credit
[490]
score the way that you want it to look
[492]
and on top of that when the other
[495]
companies are trying to track you down
[496]
Trace you down they can't find you
[499]
because you're a totally different
[500]
person right the problem is that is 100%
[504]
ill legal and it can land you in jail it
[509]
is a form of a fraud and even worse
[512]
they're offered to do that for you is in
[515]
complete violation of the credit repair
[518]
organization Act which is an act that
[520]
governs how credit repair companies and
[523]
credit repair agencies are able to help
[525]
you how they can represent you what
[528]
strategies they can and cannot use and
[530]
this is one of the ones that they can
[532]
not use they cannot offer to give you a
[535]
brand new identity because it's fraud
[538]
plain and simple so if they're telling
[541]
you that they're going to get you a new
[542]
identity you're gonna get a new social
[544]
security number that they're just gonna
[545]
wipe the slate clean and you're gonna
[547]
start over this is a scam and it is a
[550]
legal act that can land you in jail girl
[553]
don't do it okay just don't do it do not
[557]
even give this a try because if the
[561]
government decides to come after you if
[563]
one of those companies that you owe
[564]
money to can find you and they report
[567]
you you could end up in jail and I do
[568]
not want that for you
[570]
now another scam is when you come across
[572]
a credit repair company that demands
[574]
some sort of large payment upfront and
[577]
this one is a little interesting because
[579]
it seems like it makes sense from a
[581]
business standpoint if I'm going to help
[583]
you do something that will ultimately
[584]
save you thousands of dollars over your
[587]
lifetime maybe even millions of dollars
[589]
depending on what you're able to do it
[591]
makes sense that I would want to charge
[593]
you a large fee upfront right the
[596]
problem is too many of these companies
[598]
were going out there charging large
[600]
upfront fees and running away with the
[602]
money so what they did with this Credit
[604]
Repair Organizations Act the one that I
[607]
mentioned a few the one that I mentioned
[610]
a few moments ago they decided nope no
[613]
more of that you cannot charge a large
[616]
upfront fee we don't want you to take
[619]
all these people's money and then run
[621]
away before you've even rendered any
[623]
services no we want to make sure that
[625]
these people are getting the services
[627]
that you're promising because people
[629]
need their credit when you actually read
[631]
the credit repair organization Act it
[633]
talks about the reason why it's so
[635]
important for people to be able to fix
[638]
their credit to be protected against
[640]
companies trying to do this it
[641]
specifically says that in the law in
[644]
fact if you want to go read the law go
[646]
ahead and pop into the description below
[648]
I have the link down there for you it's
[650]
really short don't worry it's not going
[652]
to take you a long time to read but if
[654]
you look at that top part it
[655]
specifically says why this is so
[657]
important to protect consumers from
[659]
these credit repair agencies that would
[661]
take advantage of them and this is one
[663]
of the ways that agencies were take
[665]
advantage of people and so this act was
[667]
used to put a stop to it so if they are
[669]
demanding an upfront fee of any kind it
[672]
doesn't even have to be a big one it can
[674]
be a small one but if they're demanding
[676]
an upfront fee to render services to you
[679]
to help you repair your credit guess
[681]
what they are in violation of the law
[684]
you can report them and you know for
[686]
sure that they're not functioning the
[688]
way they are supposed to which now means
[690]
it's a scam the fifth and final scam
[694]
that I want to cover is when they tell
[696]
you to stop paying on debts that they
[698]
have successfully removed from your
[700]
credit report now this one it seems like
[703]
a they gotta take it off I don't have to
[705]
pay it anymore
[706]
well not really that's actually not
[708]
quite how it works remember according to
[711]
the Fair Credit Reporting Act you can
[714]
have something removed from your credit
[715]
report that's inaccurate that's
[717]
incomplete that's false
[719]
but clue in on the inaccurate and
[722]
complete or maybe they didn't keep the
[724]
paperwork and they didn't verify it in
[726]
the appropriate time line the thing is
[728]
just because it was removed from your
[730]
credit report doesn't mean you don't
[732]
still owe the money so what these
[734]
companies are able to do is they're
[736]
actually able to go to the courts and to
[737]
sue you and say hey she owes me this
[741]
money he owes me this amount of money
[743]
for a contract that we had for a loan
[746]
that I gave them for a line of Krait
[748]
that I extended them and they never paid
[750]
so the judge says hey you never paid you
[753]
owe them this money I'm gonna garnish
[754]
your wages I'm gonna take your taxes I'm
[757]
gonna do whatever they are going to
[760]
render a judgment against you and now
[762]
you're still stuck paying this money to
[764]
these people who you stopped paid
[766]
because you thought that because it's no
[768]
longer on your credit you're good to go
[770]
a lot of these companies will not tell
[773]
you that fact so if you just stopped
[775]
paying on any debt that they've
[777]
successfully removed you can easily find
[779]
yourself in a situation where you end up
[782]
with a where you end up with a court
[784]
judgment against you but also there's
[788]
the reality that they can put it back on
[790]
your credits yeah I said that they can
[795]
actually put it back on your credit just
[797]
because they took it off
[798]
I mean that they can't put it back on
[800]
there all you have to do is start
[801]
reporting on it again and so if they
[803]
start reporting on it begin and you
[805]
haven't paid that debt and three four
[807]
five months now you find yourself in a
[809]
situation where you have even more
[813]
missed payments you have even more late
[815]
payments and it makes your credit score
[817]
go down even more what they need to be
[820]
doing is they need to be telling you
[822]
what do you do with these debts that are
[825]
successfully removed how are we gonna
[827]
handle it what is our strategy they need
[830]
to be talking to you about that
[831]
but if they just flat-out say well don't
[833]
pay them anymore you're good to go and
[835]
they don't mention the fact that it
[836]
can't appear back on your credit report
[838]
they don't mention the fact that these
[839]
companies can take you to court well huh
[843]
it's a scam because they don't want you
[845]
to know that information they just want
[846]
you to pay them and then they can
[848]
artificially boost your credit score for
[850]
a little while and you're happy you've
[852]
given them money you walk away and then
[854]
you get messed over down the road
[856]
because these things hit that they never
[857]
educated you on they should be helping
[860]
you with these strategies and if they're
[862]
not giving you this information they're
[863]
not telling you what to do about these
[865]
things it's a scam or at least at a
[868]
minimum they don't know what that you're
[870]
doing I'm just saying
[871]
and boom there you have it five common
[875]
credit repair scams that you definitely
[876]
want to dodge now if you are thinking of
