[1]
vladimir putin had threatened to
[3]
retaliate in response to western
[4]
sanctions and this week on this show we
[7]
asked what could he really do
[9]
what power could he wield over the west
[13]
tonight we're learning about one
[14]
response and it involves seizing and
[17]
nationalizing the assets western
[19]
companies leave behind as they pull out
[22]
of the country over its invasion of
[23]
ukraine
[24]
so let's translate that
[27]
it means they may be stealing all the
[29]
stuff left behind by these companies
[31]
they're now going to use it themselves
[33]
a long list of companies including
[35]
mcdonald's burger king shell oil jp
[37]
morgan chase goldman sachs pepsi have
[39]
announced plans to suspend their russian
[40]
operations
[42]
so those assets could include property
[44]
even entire business arms of the company
[47]
putin says the kremlin can legally seize
[49]
the firms and introduce external
[51]
management then transfer these
[54]
enterprises to quote those who actually
[56]
want to work so picture this let's take
[59]
mcdonald's for example the russian
[61]
government if it follows through with
[62]
these plans could ignore any copyright
[64]
or patent and just call it mcdonald's
[66]
again and open it under state control
[68]
they've already signaled that they're
[69]
not going to respect trademark so they
[71]
keep those golden arches same workers at
[73]
the drive-through
[74]
still
[75]
telling people to say i'm loving it
[77]
joining me now is leland vitter host of
[79]
on balance who's covered the region for
[82]
years leland i don't know if you're a
[83]
mcdonald's fan but russia is saying
[87]
that they're going to have a formal
[89]
process here right they're pretending as
[91]
if they're going to sort of establish a
[94]
sort of a legal system to evaluate that
[97]
how do they say that's going to work
[98]
probably about the same way it worked
[100]
that vladimir putin said they weren't
[101]
going to invade ukraine and that they
[103]
were withdrawing forces so
[105]
this this idea of this legal process
[107]
that they say that for in five days the
[109]
u.s businesses can file a complaint and
[111]
it goes through the court process gives
[113]
the russian courts way too much credit
[116]
russia is essentially vladimir putin inc
[119]
and it it makes perfect sense right if
[121]
you're vladimir putin and your economy
[123]
is crashing literally by the second well
[126]
and you've got
[127]
huge plants there you've got big ikea
[130]
stores you've got mcdonald's that are
[132]
now closed and workers out of work why
[134]
wouldn't you reopen them and seize this
[136]
the real problem is what happens when
[139]
this whole thing is over because it's
[141]
going to be over eventually or we're all
[143]
going to be dead in a nuclear war and
[145]
the russian people are going to really
[146]
suffer because western companies after
[148]
having all of their asses assets seized
[150]
are not going to be heading back to
[152]
invest
[153]
in russia you think about airbus and
[156]
boeing the only two major manufacturers
[157]
of commercial airplanes in the world
[160]
they are owed billions of dollars either
[162]
they are the leasing companies that own
[164]
all of the russian commercial jets for
[166]
all the russian airlines if they don't
[168]
turn those over what's boeing or airbus
[170]
incentive to ever do business again
[173]
yep now can we do the same thing to them
[175]
do we have a lot of russian assets in
[177]
the united states that it could become
[179]
tit for tat well
[181]
it's not exactly like there's a lot that
[182]
the russians russian companies make in
[184]
america that you really like or one what
[187]
will be interesting to see here is of
[189]
all the russian assets that were seized
[191]
in these sanctions and frozen talking
[193]
about foreign currency reserves the bank
[196]
accounts of oligarchs and in the like
[198]
especially if the u.s and the uk start
[200]
seizing oligarch
[202]
assets i'm thinking about roman
[204]
ibranovich's 150 million mansion uh
[206]
probably perhaps next door to you in in
[209]
new york dan um that you could the these
[212]
companies say boeing or airbus says well
[214]
we lost two
[216]
triple seven airliners for boeing's sake
[218]
we're and roman abramovich's house is an
[221]
extension of putin inc therefore we're
[224]
going to try to make some kind of trade
[226]
uh whether u.s courts would entertain
[228]
that or not is is way way way too early
[230]
to tell
[232]
yeah and bottom line is this a surprise
[234]
that he's doing this
[236]
i don't know if it's a surprise that
[238]
he's doing unusual things
[241]
but it's probably
[243]
something that these companies
[245]
considered in the past
[246]
i don't know a couple of months to begin
[248]
pulling assets out of russia if you
[251]
think about it if you're goldman sachs
[253]
you have some money in russian banks you
[255]
can't get that out and i bet there's a
[256]
bunch of computers they remotely wipe
[258]
those and they move on
[260]
the companies that really have much
[261]
bigger issues are the companies that may
[263]
have plants in russia the flip side is
[265]
companies like boeing who had big
[267]
operations to extract titanium and buy
[269]
titanium from the russians and then you
[271]
really have to think about the big oil
[273]
company shell exxon bp they did tens of
[276]
billions of dollars of year
[278]
a year worth of business with the
[280]
russians and they're taking huge losses
[282]
on their own balance sheets and their
[283]
own income statements to walk away so
[286]
for all of our complaining about
[288]
american companies not doing the right
[290]
thing here they are
[292]
yeah
