Simple Mortgage Free Cabin Build Pt 1: Foundation Pads - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[4]
all right this is going to be the first video聽
of the mortgage free simple cabin build series聽聽
[9]
you're going to get to see me build this聽
20 by 32 cabin that my girlfriend and i are聽聽
[14]
going to be living in this is my third cabin聽
build will be my fourth if you include the聽聽
[21]
tiny house that my girlfriend and i聽
are living in while we're building this聽聽
[24]
but um this is pretty well researched you know聽
trying to keep price down as much as possible聽聽
[29]
keep it as simple as possible because of the price聽
of lumber now you know it's just outrageous so聽聽
[34]
but i built a log cabin in remote alaska north of聽
fairbanks and then i moved home built a log cabin聽聽
[41]
in remote northeast minnesota by the boundary聽
waters and uh that's where a lot of my videos聽聽
[47]
you know you see me there and then now we're聽
building this one here so and this one's pretty聽聽
[51]
close to my log cabin so going forward for those聽
of you uh new um you're gonna see you know we'll聽聽
[56]
be having our life here with our homestead you聽
know gardens some animals and stuff like that聽聽
[61]
and then of course i'll be at the log cabin a聽
lot during the winter so um anyways i'm gonna try聽聽
[66]
to go into as much detail as possible on how we聽
build this not saying this is how to build a cabin聽聽
[72]
this is how i'm going to do it i'm not a master聽
carpenter by any means i'm not even a carpenter聽聽
[77]
but like i said i've built a few now聽
so um and this method here is like i聽聽
[82]
said pretty well researched on keeping the聽
cost down because i think we all like that聽聽
[86]
so uh stay tuned if you want to follow along聽
watch this build i'll do it in a series that聽聽
[92]
way it's easy to follow kind of step by step and聽
uh for those of you that are going to be building聽聽
[96]
a cabin in the future or just like watching i聽
mean feel free to use any of this information聽聽
[101]
if you want to but of course you know once we聽
get this thing built uh future videos are going聽聽
[106]
to be me and my girlfriend living here and uh聽
you know just kind of real reality no no drama聽聽
[111]
you know there's enough of that won't be using聽
sierra as click bait uh to get you to click on my聽聽
[116]
videos here so uh just kind of real reality聽
you know like i said just no drama added and聽聽
[121]
just kind of how it is so um if you guys want聽
to follow along you're going to get to see the聽聽
[125]
you know the cabin build of course like i said聽
and kind of get to watch us create our dream聽聽
[130]
from scratch here on raw land so stay tuned聽
if that interests you and i appreciate you
[134]
watching
[147]
well sierra and i got our foundation pad so聽
we we're at the point where we're hauling聽聽
[151]
we're hauling material over to the build site we聽
have 15 of these concrete pads they're about 80聽聽
[157]
pounds apiece and i know in my previous video聽
i mentioned i was going to do sauna tubes we聽聽
[162]
decided to go with this method instead i think聽
it's going to be a lot better for our application聽聽
[166]
here and it's a proven method that works well in聽
our area so that's what we're going with but like聽聽
[173]
i said there's 15 of these and i'll get into how聽
this foundation is going to be built pretty soon聽聽
[178]
here all right sierra and i got our four corners聽
marked out you can see we got a stake in all four聽聽
[188]
corners some lines going here we're uh right on聽
and square so i can start laying out our pads聽聽
[195]
and these pads are gonna hold up the three聽
beams so we'll have one on this outside wall one聽聽
[201]
down the middle and one on this outside wall and聽
there's gonna be a pad every eight feet supporting聽聽
[205]
these this beam or each of these beams and they're聽
gonna be uh three wide two by eights so they'll聽聽
[212]
be spliced together each seam will be resting聽
on cinder blocks which will be on these pads so聽聽
[219]
that is how the beams are going to be laid out聽
and then we'll build our floor on top of that聽聽
[224]
so i got some of this all-purpose聽
gravel at home depot and聽聽
[229]
we have some class 5 on the property already聽
and so we're going to have a good solid 4聽聽
[234]
to 5 inch thick base of class 5 packed聽
really well and then this on top of that聽聽
[241]
about four or five inches of this as well聽
and then our pads will sit on top of that
[250]
all right we got our these green x's indicate聽
where each of these pads are going to be going聽聽
[256]
so right now we're just going to聽
move some material get it get a pad聽聽
[259]
next to each x and a couple聽
bags of uh that good gravel聽聽
[263]
and um that way everything's prepped聽
and ready and we can just start flying
[270]
all right so you can see here we're starting to聽
dig these in it's probably really hard to tell but聽聽
[274]
um we have pretty hard clay where we're at but聽
we've dug down a little bit and right here we聽聽
[280]
have about four or five inches of class five聽
and then this will go on top of that class five聽聽
[287]
and the pad will sit on top of that so it'll聽
be a good base and your base work is really聽聽
[292]
important you know i worked with asphalt all last聽
summer and uh if your base isn't right i mean your聽聽
[298]
product's gonna fail you know you have a soft base聽
that's when tar cracks you know same as concrete聽聽
[303]
so your base works really important to get聽
it perfectly level and packed really well
[312]
well it's getting dark pretty fast here so聽
i think sierra and i are going to call it聽聽
[316]
for the day but this is just for demonstration聽
purposes so you can see these pads will be sitting聽聽
[320]
on um that gravel we still have another big to聽
add on this one but um we have the gravel base聽聽
[327]
all done on this side the class 5 base that聽
we still got to add this other gravel and聽聽
[332]
all that and then we started getting some聽
of these dug in here but we ended up running聽聽
[335]
to home depot tonight earlier in the night to get聽
15 more of these bags of all-purpose gravel so聽聽
[344]
tomorrow we should be able to get these all聽
in i would think if everything goes smooth聽聽
[348]
i don't know if you guys can see this tree聽
here this is the only one that is in our way聽聽
[352]
right now and it's not going to be in our聽
way for a while we'll be able to get all聽聽
[355]
the pads in and everything because this聽
one down the middle here goes next to it聽聽
[360]
so uh we'll be able to get this all done聽
and get our beams built and everything and聽聽
[364]
get them on our pads and then at that point聽
we'll be able to transplant this one here聽聽
[369]
i really want to save that one because that's聽
one of the bigger ones we have to transplant it聽聽
[372]
looks like it's going to be a really nice聽
tree so i do not want to waste that one
[379]
all right well we're starting day two聽
here we only worked on this for probably聽聽
[383]
a couple hours yesterday because we聽
were hauling materials all day but聽聽
[387]
um i started on the the middle beam here getting聽
these pads uh situated this side over here is done聽聽
[395]
um it's got class five and all those um i still聽
gotta add the bags of gravel here though but um聽聽
[402]
i think i got eight more to dig out like this and聽
then i'll add class five and then we'll add this聽聽
[410]
all-purpose gravel and start聽
leveling these out with each other
[416]
sierra just had to run into town because last聽
night you know we keep our food out here because聽聽
[421]
it's a little cooler of course so we could hear聽
something underneath the cabin on wheels here um聽聽
[426]
all night you know i would bang on the walls and聽
scare it away and it would come right back about聽聽
[431]
five minutes later i don't know it's probably聽
a skunk or a fox or something but um i kept聽聽
[437]
looking out the windows and stuff you know with聽
my flashlight trying to figure out what it was聽聽
[441]
but never saw it and then um and i did i wasn't聽
going to go inside because you know if you open聽聽
[445]
the door just a crack skeeter's a wizard at聽
getting getting outside so and if it was a聽聽
[450]
skunk like i said you know i don't want them聽
getting sprayed so um anyways i thought it was聽聽
[454]
pretty funny but we got robbed stole our buns for聽
our brats and i think sierra had some cantaloupe聽聽
[460]
and a couple other things but yeah those are all聽
gone i've walked around tried to find them and聽聽
[464]
can't find them so whatever it was took them聽
but i guess that's living in the woods you聽聽
[469]
know the uh the animals steal your stuff not聽
people but anyways i thought that was kind of
[474]
funny
[485]
so pad one's level and now we've聽
gotta level them all with each other聽聽
[491]
so i'm gonna start in one corner聽
here i'm gonna level off all these聽聽
[495]
so they're all the same height and聽
all level and then um i'll work my way聽聽
[502]
shooting out the sides here and there's gonna be a聽
lot of adjusting and you know triple measuring you聽聽
[508]
know so um it's a tedious game but um i don't know聽
once this part's done it gets a lot more fun but聽聽
[514]
this part's like i said by far the most important聽
here's how i'm getting these pads leveled here um聽聽
[523]
i got an eight foot board it's exactly eight聽
feet and it's a really really straight board聽聽
[529]
so um it makes a good straight聽
edge and i get the pad level here
[540]
now if we come up a little聽
bit on that one edge the hair聽聽
[544]
it's like i said it's just a tedious thing it's聽
pretty good this way and then now i know these are
[554]
level to each other
[559]
i got to drop this one here down just a little聽
bit because this has to be exact and if you're off聽聽
[564]
just a little bit even like you know聽
millimeters from here to there but then聽聽
[569]
you keep doing it this way then you're聽
going to be way off by the time you get聽聽
[571]
to the last pad so you got to make sure聽
all these are 100 level before you go on聽聽
[576]
and um like i said it's not the funnest聽
thing in the world but it's important
[583]
and as you can see i got a lot聽
of them to do so if i can get聽聽
[586]
this accomplished today i would聽
consider that a pretty good win
[592]
but i'd say these two of these first two聽
here probably took me 30 minutes honestly聽聽
[596]
but i'm kind of starting to get a聽
system down now so it should go faster
[612]
so you can see those two bags聽
give me a pretty thick base here
[620]
and i just kind of get it roughly level with the聽聽
[624]
level here it's kind of聽
using it as a edge you know
[640]
so you can see i just use this eight foot board聽
here cut it exactly eight feet to make sure i'm聽聽
[645]
in the center of each pad and i just eyeball it聽
um it doesn't need to be a hundred percent exact聽聽
[650]
but it's got to be pretty darn close because聽
i'll have cinder blocks on top of these now聽聽
[657]
and when i build these beams they're聽
going to be two by eight spliced together聽聽
[661]
and each one of my seams i want聽
them to land on one of these pads so
[670]
that way that splice is landing on a pad
[692]
all right guys there's the completed cabin聽
footprint right there all these pads are level and聽聽
[697]
square to each other um some of them might be just聽
a little bit turned you know here and there but聽聽
[702]
um we'll adjust those when we put the beams on聽
but the center to center they're all perfect聽聽
[706]
so this part went well it's my least favorite聽
part and we can get on to some more fun stuff
[711]
now i want to point out this because i almost made聽
a big mistake here well not a big mistake i would聽聽
[720]
have realized it later later on and then it just聽
would have been a lot harder to correct uh when i聽聽
[724]
you know measured the way i laid this out was 20聽
foot from the center of this pad to the center of聽聽
[730]
that pad and um the reason that wouldn't really聽
work very well is because you know my beams three聽聽
[738]
boards wide so um i would have had about this聽
much of my beam sticking out past my rim joist聽聽
[746]
and there wouldn't have been very much uh my聽
floor joists wouldn't be resting on very much聽聽
[750]
of the beam so i had to account for the width of聽
the beam you know and move these in a little bit聽聽
[756]
so now my beams lay right on the middle of these聽
pads and then the rim joists will come up flush to聽聽
[762]
the outside edge of that uh my beam so otherwise聽
the rim joist would have been sitting like聽聽
[770]
in on the beam like like center on the聽
beam and then i would have this much of聽聽
[773]
my beam sticking out which would look聽
dumb and wouldn't have been as good so
[781]
okay so i have this set up here for聽
demonstration purposes uh this is day three聽聽
[784]
we've started hauling these blocks i can only haul聽
30 at a time in my little ford escape but we need聽聽
[791]
60 so i got to run back and get one more load聽
here but i wanted to set this up just to show聽聽
[796]
you what it'll look like so we have these blocks聽
that'll be sitting on all of our pads and um聽聽
[801]
the advantage of doing it this way rather than聽
having a continuous poured piece of cement聽聽
[806]
uh for a footing is if we ever have to make聽
adjustments uh this makes it really easy聽聽
[810]
you know if we have to jack up the cabin and聽
adjust something it's going to be a piece of聽聽
[814]
cake because it's all individual pieces rather聽
than having to wrestle a big heavy continuous聽聽
[819]
piece of concrete so i think this is the route to聽
go and then like i said there'll be green treated聽聽
[826]
lumber on top of this um in between our beams and聽
the concrete because you don't want your beams聽聽
[832]
sitting on concrete because of moisture issues so聽
this is what they'll look like when they're done
[838]
and i have to add that i would not recommend this聽
type of pad foundation for a real large building聽聽
[843]
you know this is a smaller building it's just a聽
few hundred square feet so um it'll work just fine聽聽
[847]
for that but if you start getting into larger聽
buildings then i would probably go a different聽聽
[851]
route than this it's supposed to rain like an聽
inch later on today um i probably got about four聽聽
[857]
or five hours before that starts and i think it's聽
going to rain the next couple days so i probably聽聽
[861]
won't do the beams but i'll probably start those聽
saturday i'm thinking so and those won't take too聽聽
[867]
long that should be a day to get those kind of in聽
place and just kind of triple check and everything聽聽
[872]
and then then we can start getting the material聽
and get our floor built so next to video after聽聽
[878]
this one will be those beams and maybe starting聽
on the rim joists and floor joists and all that
[886]
so i've started laying these聽
blocks on top of the pads
[890]
like so and as you can see we're perfectly level聽聽
[894]
so this part of this of the process is聽
turning out good so far but this gives聽聽
[900]
you an idea of how my beams will be sitting聽
on here you know the full length of course
[906]
but yeah so far so good well it started raining聽
pretty good so me and skeeter had to come take聽聽
[915]
shelter in the shed but uh you guys pretty聽
much get the gist of it how those uh pads work聽聽
[920]
and um and all that so like i said it'll be聽
a piece of green treated wood on top of those聽聽
[924]
and then the beans and i should have that聽
video for you guys next week so things have聽聽
[928]
finally started uh but thanks for watching and聽
we'll see you guys next week on the next video
