[16]
- That it wasn't a safe place.
[29]
Okay.
[30]
So my name is Melinda Hollandsworth.
[34]
I grew up just white America.
[37]
I didn't really know much about diversity.
[39]
Everyone around me was
pretty much the same as me.
[42]
- My name is Jim Hollandsworth.
[45]
There were a few folks in my high school
[47]
who were different than me
[48]
but I didn't really know 'em well.
[50]
My world was this bubble.
[52]
This white, kinda church
going, Christian bubble.
[57]
- We definitely lived an ordinary life.
[59]
Things were pretty easy for us
[60]
and I remember we were just
sitting around one night
[62]
after dinner and we were like,
[63]
"What are we doing in our community?"
[66]
- [Jim] Melinda and I both
were having this faith crisis.
[68]
A little bit of, hey,
is this all there is?
[71]
- But I remember we just sorta felt stuck
[73]
that night Like we wanted to do something
[75]
but we really didn't think
there was need in our community.
[79]
About a year later,
[81]
we signed up to be part of
a Christmas sponsorship.
[84]
Jim and I volunteered
to deliver the gifts.
[87]
When we drove into the neighborhood
[88]
it just felt different.
[93]
The colors were vibrant.
[95]
There was a lot of music playing.
[96]
It was unfamiliar
[98]
and so out of my norm
[101]
but then also there was a
great sense of community.
[103]
Like the people were all
involved in each others' lives.
[106]
We met one family, the Ramirez family,
[109]
and all the kids were there.
[111]
- The sixth grade daughter in this family,
[113]
her name was Maria,
[114]
she asked us,
[115]
"Hey, can you help with our homework
[117]
"because my mom and dad
don't speak English?"
[119]
- I love to see Friday folders.
[120]
I open it up and realize
[121]
they're already failing
everything in school.
[124]
Older siblings had already
dropped out of high school.
[126]
The kids who were in middle school
[127]
had these big hopes and
dreams for their lives
[130]
but they didn't have a
role model to look up to.
[132]
And I had just assumed
[133]
that if someone dropped out of high school
[136]
it was because
[137]
that was just what they wanted to do.
[140]
It never occurred to me
[141]
that maybe there was a time
[142]
that they wanted something
different for their lives
[144]
but just the difficulty of the
path knocked them off course.
[149]
- And this was like this light bulb of
[151]
well that's something that we can do.
[153]
Melinda was a teacher.
[155]
How easy is that?
[157]
And then we said, "Well okay
[158]
"then we'll just do homework
for two afternoons a week."
[160]
And that's when we met Sophia
was in the spring of 2010.
[165]
- We were doing homework
in the neighborhood
[167]
and Sophia one day said to me ya know,
[169]
"Ms. Melinda when are you guys leaving?
[171]
"That's what people do here.
[172]
"They come and they stay for a while
[173]
"and they leave and we
never see them again."
[175]
And it was like punch to the face question
[178]
because I could think of times
[180]
when I had been the person who left.
[182]
(sirens)
[185]
- [Jim] And then a shooting happened
[186]
in the mobile home park.
[188]
We heard that a drug
deal had kinda gone bad.
[191]
- And we got in the car that day
[193]
and I remember looking at Jim
[195]
with panic thinking, "Get me out of here"
[197]
cause it was just terrifying.
[198]
It was more than I could
really handle at the time.
[202]
I remember we sat there
and Jim looked at me
[204]
and he said,
[205]
"I think that we either
choose to do something
[208]
"or we leave and we never come back."
[212]
We sat a stop sign.
[214]
Staring at that stop sign.
[215]
It was uncomfortable.
[216]
It was out of my comfort zone.
[218]
- [Jim] I had a job, we
had a little baby at home.
[220]
- As much as it was a
terrifying moment for us,
[223]
it was also the moment where
we said, "Okay, we're in."
[228]
- We just know these
people are now our friends.
[232]
Let's try to figure this out.
[234]
The very next week,
[235]
the property manager came to us and said,
[236]
"Hey, the home where the
shooting happened is now vacant.
[239]
"Do you guys want it to
do your homework program?"
[241]
So we turned this mobile
home into a community center
[244]
like a classroom to try to
impact that graduation rate.
[248]
- We've seen how the
role models have changed.
[250]
Now when you talk to the kids
[252]
they talk about where kids are in college
[253]
or what the older kids are doing.
[256]
And we're not the role models.
[257]
It's the kids who've grown up
[259]
and they've blazed a new path
[261]
for the younger generation
in their neighborhood.
[263]
(kids shouting and laughing)
[268]
My world is bigger now than it was before.
[271]
It's normal to have
friends who live in homes
[273]
that might look a little
bit different than ours.
[275]
It's normal to have friends
[276]
that might speak a different
language in their house.
[278]
It's more whole because of the friendships
[281]
with the people in the neighborhood.
[282]
And the people who've become family to us.
[285]
When I was in the hospital for eight weeks
[287]
before my son Will was born,
[288]
it was Maria, Alaina and Ortencia who came
[290]
and visited me in the hospital
[291]
and sat with me on one of the long days.
[293]
I remember in that moment thinking,
[294]
"What if my being afraid had
prevented me from knowing
[299]
and loving these people who
are part of our community?"
[302]
- If we give ourselves to others,
[304]
it creates meaningful relationships.
[307]
It creates opportunity
for things to happen
[310]
that would never happen by
living in a safe little bubble.
[314]
We didn't sit down and
write out a strategic plan.
[317]
It was just an organic thing.
[319]
We made a ton of mistakes,
[320]
but along that journey
[321]
we started to kinda figure things out.
[323]
- It's definitely been difficult
[325]
and bumpy at times but
I would never go back
[327]
and do anything differently.
[329]
They have so many gifts
and talents and resources.
[332]
Their lives have changed my
life and my family's life.
[336]
- [Jim] As human beings,
right, we're all connected.
[339]
Why wouldn't we want
to make our community,
[341]
as a whole,
[341]
a more meaningful place to live?
[344]
And we're gonna find true joy and meaning
[346]
in building relationships
with others who are different.
[350]
