what's your take on this editorial in
[2]
the lancet
[4]
jonathan it's great to be here i thought
[6]
that was quite frankly a breathtaking
[8]
editorial um the fact that we have
[11]
medical providers who are
[13]
making clear the impact of what it would
[16]
mean for road to be overturned the fact
[19]
that medical providers have a much
[22]
clearer understanding of the health of
[25]
women and the impact
[26]
not lawmakers right not lawmakers who've
[29]
been making restrictions that are not
[30]
grounded in um in in real uh necessary
[34]
medical regulations not crisis pregnancy
[38]
centers that are uh not grounded in any
[40]
kind of medical expertise whatsoever
[43]
you know we have a a leading
[46]
medical uh review journal that is
[50]
basically declaring um the the court
[53]
really taking the court to account
[56]
for allowing such a horrific decision
[59]
to come to pass if indeed the draft
[61]
opinion is correct
[63]
you know usa today reports and i'm
[64]
quoting here abortion clinics nationally
[66]
are reassessing and strengthening
[68]
security measures following warnings
[70]
from law enforcement they may be
[72]
targeted by anti-abortion activists
[75]
freshly motivated by the pending supreme
[77]
court decision that may overturn roe
[79]
versus wade so
[82]
alexis have there been more protests
[84]
outside of clinics since the draft
[86]
opinion leaked
[89]
you know jonathan we're always prepared
[91]
for protesters uh and we always have our
[94]
security on high alert because uh there
[97]
are consistently protesters who
[100]
show up outside of our clinics and the
[102]
clinics of other independent providers
[104]
and other organizations that provide
[106]
abortion funds and care you know what we
[109]
have seen and increase around actually
[111]
started with sb-8
[113]
you know the texas law that empowers
[116]
bounty hunters to uh to try to figure
[120]
out who is getting abortion after six
[122]
weeks um you know which is often times
[125]
before many people know they are
[126]
pregnant um and the you know the reward
[130]
for that bounty would be ten thousand
[131]
dollars so there is a perverse incentive
[133]
that has already been put into play over
[135]
the last nine months that has increased
[137]
surveillance in parking lots that has
[139]
increased the criminalization of the
[142]
bodies of people who are seeking access
[144]
to abortion and those people who are
[145]
providing care
[147]
so you know the the reality is
[150]
you know we have to stay ready because
[152]
of the state of play
[154]
well let's talk about something that's
[156]
even more extreme than what you were
[158]
just talking about in texas and that's
[160]
what the louisiana legislature tried to
[163]
do they tried to pass a bill that would
[164]
make abortion a homicide and when that
[168]
was deemed too extreme the legislature
[170]
amended the bill which now
[173]
sets prison time and fines for abortion
[175]
providers and outlaws certain forms of
[177]
birth control and emergency
[179]
contraception
[180]
i mean republican state legislatures
[182]
have seen this draft opinion as an
[185]
invitation to pass the most restrictive
[187]
laws possible right
[191]
the most restrictive laws right i mean
[193]
you know you're seeing what's happening
[194]
in louisiana we also saw the kinds of
[196]
laws that were being passed in in
[198]
missouri or the the laws that were being
[199]
introduced in missouri laws against uh
[202]
ectopic pregnancy uh abortions laws that
[205]
were um trying to prevent people from
[207]
leaving the state to seek care right
[210]
literally imprisoning people in their
[211]
own state in order to
[213]
um to prevent them from having access to
[216]
abortion so the criminalization the
[218]
surveillance um all of the ways in which
[220]
they um you know best are shaming people
[223]
for the decisions that they are making
[225]
about their own bodies um and at worst
[227]
criminalizing and you know potentially
[230]
um you know creating a felony and
[232]
locking people up for the for the care
[234]
that they seek um this is this extremity
[237]
is
[237]
you know um the extreme nature of where
[240]
they are going it's not clearly not just
[242]
about abortion right they're revealing
[244]
their intent it's about contraception it
[247]
is about identity it is about power and
[249]
control and where i think the american
[252]
people are is that they don't want
[254]
lawmakers making these decisions with
[255]
them they don't lawmakers in the middle
[257]
of their the decision is whether or not
[258]
they should take birth control or not
[260]
that should be between them and you know
[261]
the person and their partner or the
[263]
person themselves right um but but at
[265]
every turn they just can't help
[267]
themselves from becoming more and more
[269]
extreme
[275]
