talking to the victims who claim that

this isn't a one-off but rather a

systematic issue right and these

customers you know they range from

people using one of the hertz companies

to rent a vehicle after a car accident

there's some for vacation travel and
[25]
it's part of a lyft driver program but

none i tell you expected to be arrested

much less at gunpoint

the downtown connector rush hour

paul anthony knight was on his way to

work

and all of a sudden

there are three police cars behind me

all the traffic stopped and

they were after me

and they had weapons

backwards pointed at him anybody else in

the car

this brings back such emotion this is

the first time he's seen the police dash
[65]
cam video of his december 2019 arrest

this moment changed my life

he was scared he was confused and i was

told that

this vehicle was reported stolen you're
[76]
in a stolen vehicle he was charged with
[79]
felony theft of the rental car he was
[81]
driving so did you go to jail i
[83]
absolutely went to jail one very long
[86]
week

julius burnside rented a car through
[90]
hertz extending it several times after a
[92]
car accident did you pay for it yes did
[95]
you return it yes
[97]
still a warrant was issued for his
[99]
arrest for theft by conversion a felony
[102]
he turned himself in april 2018. they
[105]
said i stole the car had proof i didn't
[107]
which was bank statements receipts from
[109]
hertz that were emailed to me both men
[112]
are among the 263 people who filed
[115]
similar false arrest claims against
[117]
hurts as part of the company's
[119]
bankruptcy filing their attorney francis
[122]
malafi hertz knows they're filing false
[125]
police reports with false payment
[126]
information false return dates false
[129]
contact information
[131]
and providing very misleading reports to
[134]
the police that they're relying upon the
[136]
fox 5i team reached out to hertz which

also owns the thrifty and dollar car
[140]
rental brands in an email we were told
[143]
that hertz cares deeply about our
[144]
customers and we successfully provide
[146]
rental vehicles for tens of millions of
[149]
travelers each year unfortunately the
[152]
attorneys have a track record of making
[154]
baseless claims that blatantly
[156]
misrepresent the facts
[158]
they went on to say the vast majority of
[160]
these cases involve renters who are
[162]
weeks even months overdue returning
[164]
vehicles and didn't communicate with the
[167]
company about the due date

paul anthony knight said he had just

moved to atlanta from charlotte for a
[174]
job he'd been driving for lyft and had
[177]
gotten the car from lyft's rental
[178]
program he was arrested two days before

he was scheduled to return the car

you've lost your job

because of the job abandonment and

everything just started to snowball at

that at that point mr burnside had

receipts that showed he paid more than

23 hundred dollars for his returned
[199]
rental he said he thought the matter was

settled so he moved to mississippi where

he lives today

but it wasn't in fact mr burnside was
[209]
arrested again julius how long were you
[212]
in jail seven months
[214]
he told the fox 5i team he finally pled
[216]
guilty just to get out of jail
[218]
what was one of the things that made you
[221]
say fine you win
[224]
my kids my daughter i got out the day
[226]
before graduation a judge later tossed
[229]
out mr burnside's conviction and the
[231]
theft charges were dismissed his claim
[234]
says hertz was notorious for losing
[236]
rental extensions and filing police
[239]
reports

after two long years in legal limbo

prosecutors dismissed paul anthony
[245]
knight's case too
[247]
hertz reports since 2016 it's filed
[249]
annually more than 3 300 theft reports
[252]
over a six year period that's more than
[254]
20 thousand cases the company writes the
[257]
fox 5i team that false arrest claims

though are very rare
[262]
hurts must be held accountable for
[265]
overturning my life and the life of so
[267]
many others when they've done absolutely
[268]
nothing wrong if they've been told the
[270]
information is false
[272]
if they understand or learn that it's
[274]
misleading

they will not correct it

this is a story we are continuing to

follow we've spoken to a few other local

hertz rental customers who would also

like to tell their stories if you have a

hertz taken the time to apologize not

that we know of i mean these cases as

will argue that hurts stopped

participating in the legal process at

some point but never called off the

cases so they were dragged out and no

they tell me no one from the rental
[312]
giant has said hey sorry for

interrupting your lives

for years in some cases would be the
[319]
very least that they could do in this
[321]
situation and that's what they're
[322]
looking for hertz again is going through
[324]
the bankruptcy process they are
[326]
claimants in that process so it's not
[328]
going to be a traditional court
[330]
situation that we're used to it's going
[332]
to be a little different but we're
[333]
following it yeah no doubt thankfully
[335]
and you just you feel for them i mean he
[337]
summed it up so well when he said that
[339]
you know their lives have been
[340]
overturned right for much right i mean
[342]
and when you have something like this
[344]
hanging over your head it's really hard
[345]
to find a job true yeah oh it just kills
[348]
me for him wow on top of this forest and
[350]
i sure do appreciate it
