How to become a project manager without experience聽-
three methods coming up! Hey team I'm Stuart Taylor聽聽
[5]
from Influential PMO. You've decided to pursue a聽
career in project management聽聽
[10]
the problem is - and you may have already noticed - everybody's asking聽for experience. You can't get experience without聽聽
[15]
having the job and you can't get the job without聽
experience! Well here are three routes that you聽聽
[20]
can follow to get that first role in project聽
management. 聽聽
[25]
The first route is certification. Basically you go and do a course get yourself a聽qualification that says you understand project聽management.
[30]
A good example of this is PRINCE2
where the foundation level demonstrates that聽聽
[35]
you have the understanding to operate in a聽
project management environment. The pros and聽聽
[39]
cons are that you'll learn the language and the聽
jargon. That's really important for being able to聽聽
[43]
understand what's going on around you on day one.
You'll understand the underlying concepts better聽聽
[47]
than most and certification gives you transferable聽
knowledge; as well as the evidence that you can聽聽
[52]
dedicate your time to study learning and retaining聽
knowledge. Following this route demonstrates聽聽
[57]
proactivity and a willingness to invest in聽
your own future and a dedication to continuous聽improvement.
[61]
The cons include that you still聽
haven't demonstrated experience and you might聽聽
[66]
still have to overcome that challenge at some聽
point in the interview process. You'll find that in聽聽
[70]
practice project management is quite different from聽
the theory. You won't get any understanding from聽聽
[75]
doing a course on whether you'll actually enjoy聽
doing the job. And finally it can be expensive聽to get the certification
[80]
The next route is聽reframing your lived experience.
[83]
What this involves is turning your historical life experience into聽
projects. In my case I had a few things I could聽leverage.
[90]
I'd worked on website designs, I'd worked聽
on setting up offices. At no point whilst I聽聽
[96]
was doing these things did I realize I was working聽
on projects. They did have a temporary lifespan and a聽聽
[100]
very definite set of objectives so it was easy to聽
transfer those experiences into being projects.
[106]
The pros are it's easy to do. All you have to do is remember聽
a task that had a definite start a definite end聽聽
[113]
and a set objective to achieve at the end. Almost聽
anything like that can be explained as a project.聽聽
[118]
Also because you're talking about an actual聽
lived experience you'll be accessing memories聽聽
[122]
when you're talking about it rather than聽
imagination and it'll give you the ability to聽聽
[126]
answer questions about the task a little bit more聽
easily. The downside is the experience is limited聽聽
[131]
and you won't have worked with governance, you聽
won't have worked with reporting and project聽聽
[136]
controls and all the things that get attached聽
to formal projects. If you're getting value聽聽
[140]
from this don't forget to hit the like button and聽
definitely don't forget to subscribe so you don't聽miss future content.
[144]
The next route is that you聽start to create projects. You start to turn ad hoc聽聽
[150]
tasks and assignments into projects. If you're聽
already working but you're in a non-project job聽聽
[154]
try to find the tasks that nobody wants to do. See聽
if it's possible to turn them into projects.聽聽
[160]
If you can identify that the task is temporary and has聽
a specific set of outputs you can easily convert聽聽
[165]
these tasks into projects, you actively treat聽
them like projects. Tracking costs, benefits, risk,聽聽
[172]
you build a plan you start obsessing about聽
quality. You start engaging with stakeholders.聽聽
[177]
If you work at an organization that's got a聽
project management service or a PMO you can start聽聽
[181]
reaching out to their project managers for advice聽
and to use their templates and their approaches.聽聽
[186]
This is a great way to get recognition and to聽
move easily from being in a non-project role聽聽
[190]
to a project role. Any PMO and project managers聽
that you've been engaging in this process聽聽
[195]
will remember that you've got the knowledge the聽
skills and the hunger to do the role and the next聽聽
[201]
time that they find that they're under resourced聽
you might find they reach out to you. 聽聽
[205]
The worst case is even if you don't move roles hopefully your聽
extra efforts will be recognized and you'll get聽聽
[209]
a bonus at the end of the year! The difficulties聽
with this is that the tasks may not be immediately聽聽
[214]
available for you to start turning into projects.聽
You'll also probably need to have your line聽聽
[218]
manager's support and you may find that by taking聽
on all these extra tasks it doesn't leave a lot of聽聽
[223]
time for you to do your regular day job and that聽
could cause problems in itself. 聽
[228]
Any of these routes聽will help to improve your chances of getting the聽experience and getting the recognition you need to聽聽
[232]
get that first project management job. But your聽
best bet is to try to do combinations of them.聽聽
[237]
If you can do two or even three of these things聽
that sets you up for success. Question of the day聽-
[243]
can you think of any other route that someone聽with no experience can find their way into聽their first project management job?
[247]
Okay, go and聽get to it and let me know how it goes! Good luck!
