I've Driven my Rivian 1500 Miles! - And something already broken... - YouTube
Channel: JerryRigEverything
[0]
it is now time for the 1
[2]
500 mile update on my rivian r1t that i
[6]
got two months ago the honeymoon period
[9]
is still here but on its way out and
[11]
there's some things that i need to
[13]
mention
[14]
not all of which are positive i have a
[17]
few suggestions for rivien as well as we
[19]
have to talk about the thing that's
[21]
already broken but like all of my other
[24]
rivian videos we're gonna film this one
[26]
on top of a mountain let's get started
[31]
[Applause]
[32]
[Music]
[45]
[Music]
[52]
so
[66]
[Music]
[76]
and just like that once again we are
[77]
back on the mountain 1500 miles is quite
[81]
a lot it's enough to kind of break the
[82]
truck in and get a feel for how the tool
[85]
handles in everyday life because a truck
[88]
definitely is a tool and i haven't just
[90]
been driving this i've been doing all
[92]
kinds of trucky things like taking a
[94]
thousand pounds of off-road tire liners
[97]
to our new warehouse
[99]
took a literal truckload of cardboard to
[101]
the recycling bin these are some of the
[103]
boxes my jerry rig everything knives
[105]
come in
[106]
link down in the description
[108]
i also dropped off some massive wooden
[110]
tables
[111]
these as well are for the new warehouse
[113]
which i'll talk about in a different
[114]
video
[116]
i brought home one and a half yards of
[117]
dirt for our planter boxes because you
[120]
know trucks are supposed to get dirty
[122]
and a little bit of dirt never hurt
[123]
nobody
[125]
i even transported an 800 pound
[128]
mechanical horse that my wife bought
[130]
happy wife happy life i don't ask a
[132]
whole lot of questions and speaking of
[135]
horses in the last two months i did tow
[137]
a 5 000 pound horse trailer about 80
[140]
miles the towing hitch is built
[142]
underneath the truck and has an
[143]
aerodynamic covering if you remember
[145]
from my ev humvee video aerodynamics is
[148]
a huge factor when it comes to range at
[150]
about 50 to 60 miles per hour the
[152]
vehicle is using more energy just
[154]
fighting the wind then it is propelling
[156]
itself forward
[158]
which is why most evs have super
[160]
aerodynamic bodies the rivien is no
[162]
exception
[163]
the rear view cameras made lining up the
[165]
hitch to the horse trailer pretty simple
[175]
[Music]
[180]
and then i can put the truck in towing
[181]
mode which is where we find the
[182]
adjustable brake gain the trailer brake
[185]
gain changes how much work the trailer
[187]
brakes are doing so your truck isn't
[188]
trying to slow down the whole load by
[190]
itself that would be sketchy especially
[192]
if we're maxing out the riven's towing
[194]
capacity at 11 000 pounds as soon as i
[196]
put it in towing mode the range does
[198]
decrease to a realistic estimate of how
[201]
far i can go with the load behind me
[203]
dropping my distance by about half
[213]
so we drove around for about one mile
[215]
and it looks like it's already
[216]
recalculated our range giving us a
[218]
little bit more and it says that when we
[220]
arrive it is a 78 mile tow one hour and
[225]
22 minutes and we will have 84 miles
[227]
when we get there it's interesting that
[228]
it's already preemptively planning for
[231]
the less range while we have so much
[233]
weight behind us now let's see how that
[236]
calculates in real life
[238]
we towed the horse trailer for about 78
[240]
miles most of which were freeway or
[242]
canyon miles which is a bit less than
[244]
half of what rivien can total tow
[246]
however while the trailer is behind me
[248]
it did feel effortless accelerating onto
[251]
the freeway it still felt like i was
[253]
driving a sports car even with the extra
[255]
five thousand pounds remember there's a
[257]
video on youtube of arivian racing a
[259]
ford raptor
[260]
while towing a six thousand pound
[262]
trailer and still winning so the
[265]
performance is pretty incredible but
[267]
overall decreased our range by about
[269]
half
[271]
so if you do plan on towing 5 000 pounds
[274]
more than 100 or 150 miles every single
[276]
day
[277]
just plan on stopping to charge a little
[279]
more often
[280]
but towing that much for that long is
[283]
definitely not a normal scenario for the
[285]
vast majority of people the nice thing
[287]
though is that we only used about seven
[289]
dollars in electricity for the whole
[290]
trip and a bonus of towing with an
[292]
electric vehicle is that we use the
[294]
regenerative braking to slow the trailer
[296]
down instead of using the brakes and
[298]
rotors and calipers taking that extra
[300]
weight and putting it back into the
[302]
battery instead of having wear and tear
[304]
on our hardware science is pretty cool
[307]
there's also a super icy morning that
[309]
you might find interesting if you
[310]
remember the door handles recess into
[312]
the truck to improve aerodynamics but
[315]
that also means that ice can form over
[317]
the door handles when it's winter which
[319]
you would think might lock the truck
[321]
shut until springtime but the handles do
[323]
rock back and forth allowing the ice to
[325]
be broken so it's not too big of a deal
[331]
overall it's been a pretty good
[332]
experience rivien hasn't left me with
[334]
much to complain about but i do have
[336]
some suggestions plus we gotta point out
[339]
that thing that broke and i'm not just
[341]
talking about the windshield which did
[343]
crack from a rock chip on my second day
[345]
of owning it but that could happen to
[346]
any vehicle the riven's windshield does
[349]
cost sixteen hundred dollars to replace
[351]
and my insurance wants me to pay one
[353]
thousand dollars of that as a deductible
[355]
and it seems rather excessive for a
[357]
piece of glass so i just filled the
[359]
crack with resin for about 50 bucks
[361]
which stopped the spread and reduced the
[363]
crack's appearance and we're just gonna
[364]
leave it for now one thing i haven't
[367]
done yet before we get to the negatives
[369]
is i've never used the exterior power
[371]
outlets on this thing
[373]
i am a bit disappointed that we don't
[375]
have the 240 volts for rescuing other
[377]
evs or welding like we see on the ford
[379]
f-150 but this does have four regular
[382]
power outlets two of which are in the
[384]
bed
[385]
plenty of juice to boil some water and
[387]
try out some yellow coconut curry from
[389]
our video sponsor hule
[394]
eating right is one of the hardest parts
[395]
of staying healthy like do i cook some
[397]
vegetables or do i eat an entire sleeve
[400]
of oreos decisions decisions too many
[403]
times i've turned to the oreos just for
[404]
convenience heel though helps by making
[407]
nutritionally complete convenient
[409]
affordable food super accessible there's
[412]
no tricks or fats just balanced
[414]
plant-based foods packaged with 27
[416]
vitamins and minerals ready in just
[418]
minutes they're high in proteins low in
[420]
carbs with not a lot of sugar and no
[423]
artificial sweeteners with plenty of
[425]
options great for breakfast lunch or
[426]
dinner fuel comes in a variety of
[428]
flavors this is the yellow coconut curry
[433]
definitely tastes healthy
[435]
but is still one of my favorites
[438]
it's actually pretty good
[440]
if you're not after a warm meal or just
[442]
need something even quicker you will
[444]
also have shakes where all you have to
[446]
do is add water also super quick easy
[448]
with 27 essential vitamins and minerals
[451]
and 40 grams of protein you'll also get
[453]
a free shaker bottle with your first
[455]
order with the link down in the
[456]
description plus it has a 13 month shelf
[459]
life meaning it'll last quite a bit
[461]
longer than the bananas on your counter
[463]
i'll leave a link down the description
[465]
and thanks to huel for sponsoring this
[467]
video
[468]
now let's get to the nitty gritty after
[470]
driving this truck for two months i have
[472]
six
[473]
mild inconveniences that have come to my
[476]
attention don't get me wrong it's a
[478]
great truck but there is always room for
[480]
improvement the first of which is the
[482]
cameras the rivian r1t does have
[485]
exterior security cameras that can tick
[487]
on if someone is getting too close to
[488]
the truck rivian calls it gearguard
[491]
there's 11 cameras surrounding the
[493]
outside but there's nothing recording
[495]
while driving my wife's model x uses the
[498]
exterior cameras to act as a dash cam
[501]
which i think is almost more important
[504]
than using the cameras while it's parked
[506]
my mom has a model y and she even had to
[508]
use the dash cam footage once when
[510]
someone hit her while she was driving
[512]
and i'm no expert on the statistics but
[514]
i feel like more accidents happen while
[516]
you're moving so hopefully rivien does
[519]
allow us to use the exterior cameras as
[521]
dash cams in the future which could
[523]
happen with an over-the-air update the
[526]
second thing i would like to see updated
[528]
is the dashboard we need to see a little
[530]
bit more information rivien has a cute
[533]
little graph over on the side that lets
[535]
you know how efficient you're driving
[537]
which is great but when driving downhill
[539]
the graph goes entirely green and
[541]
becomes entirely unhelpful and i might
[544]
be stereotyping here but i feel like
[546]
truck guys and sports car guys are good
[548]
with numbers and can handle the
[550]
information and since this truck is a
[552]
sports car hybrid having more
[554]
information available would be pretty
[556]
awesome rivien is going for a minimal
[559]
aesthetic and out of all of the electric
[561]
trucks rivien is my favorite but they
[563]
have my least favorite display i think
[566]
hummer is a good example of going
[568]
overkill with the available information
[570]
which isn't a bad thing it does feel
[572]
like you're driving in a video game but
[574]
ford and the f-150 lightning are a bit
[576]
more realistic with coolant and motor
[579]
temperature graphics along with side
[581]
regen and how much torque the dual
[582]
motors are putting out even tesla has
[585]
more information on their graph with the
[587]
watt hours along with the acceleration
[589]
and regen inside the model x i think
[592]
rivian should either add some numbers to
[594]
their graph or add an entire stats for
[596]
nerds page next to the driving modes so
[599]
we can numerically see what this truck
[601]
is capable of amps volts watt hours how
[604]
much torque is coming from each of the
[606]
quad motors this truck has an insane
[608]
amount of power and it doesn't have to
[609]
be front and center we don't want to
[610]
confuse grandma but at the same time i
[613]
know rivien has all that information in
[615]
their truck somewhere and it would just
[616]
be cool if we could access it i know i'm
[618]
not the only person interested in the
[621]
numbers as of now the numberless graph
[623]
and the quarter-sized regen bar are just
[626]
meaningless fluff
[627]
the third thing is something that kind
[629]
of only pertains to me i did put it in
[631]
the pre-order for this truck about three
[632]
years ago and when you order the truck
[634]
they ship the accessories separately
[636]
like the roof rack as well as the rubber
[639]
mats that go inside of the cab and they
[641]
sent that to my three-year-old address
[643]
that i don't live at anymore so they
[645]
were a bit hard to get to but at least
[647]
they got the truck in the right spot
[649]
also the roof racks do make a
[650]
considerable amount of noise over 70
[653]
miles an hour and so i will be taking
[655]
those off and just leaving them on a
[656]
shelf in my garage until i actually need
[658]
them the fourth thing is i can't
[661]
actually drive the truck with the door
[662]
open and i didn't realize how often i do
[665]
this but when i'm connecting to a
[667]
trailer or backing up to a loading dock
[669]
i usually crack open the door to i can
[671]
make sure i'm not hitting anything and
[673]
rivien just will not let you drive if
[675]
any of the doors are open which brings
[677]
me to the sixth thing the doors are
[680]
actually pretty hard to close anytime
[682]
that i've had anybody jump in the truck
[684]
to give them a test ride i usually have
[686]
to tell them to re-shut their door
[688]
because it hasn't closed all the way it
[690]
takes an above average amount of force
[693]
to close these doors and i'm sure it has
[694]
to do something with the sound proofing
[696]
since the truck is more quiet there is
[697]
more sound proofing for anything that
[700]
opens but it is definitely still a minor
[702]
inconvenience and makes the list and
[705]
lastly before we get to the thing that
[706]
broke the sixth thing is that the truck
[709]
will constantly adjust itself at stop
[711]
lights i'll be because it has air
[713]
suspension on each of the four tires and
[716]
it can adjust anywhere from 9 inches to
[718]
15 and even though i'm not adjusting
[721]
between modes it'll like settle itself
[723]
which is a little unnerving and
[725]
discombobulating when you're not
[727]
expecting your truck to be moving
[729]
underneath you usually it's just one of
[731]
the shocks that'll raise and lower an
[732]
inch but it's mildly inconveniencing
[736]
enough that it makes the list which
[738]
finally brings us to the thing that is
[740]
absolutely broken on this truck and i
[743]
kind of thought that it would break from
[745]
the very first time i used it but it's
[747]
this
[748]
truck cover right here it opens fine but
[751]
when it comes time to close it
[758]
that
[759]
something has caught inside of the gear
[761]
mechanism and won't allow it to close
[764]
leaving a foot of it exposed over my
[766]
truck bed
[767]
this happened after recycling the
[769]
cardboard but before putting a bunch of
[771]
dirt in the back so it wasn't the dirt
[773]
it's definitely not something i'm going
[774]
to lose sleep over but it did break
[776]
during the first 1500 miles of driving
[779]
so it makes the video so far after the
[782]
first 1500 miles these are all pretty
[784]
minor things is it a very expensive
[786]
truck so it's held to a little higher
[787]
bar than i would normally but i also run
[790]
my own off-road wheelchair business
[792]
where i interact with customers on a
[794]
daily basis and i know on a much smaller
[797]
scale how difficult production can be
[799]
i'm still mind blown that people can
[801]
accomplish something this complex
[814]
one of the perks of being an electric
[816]
vehicle is the nature's not scared of
[818]
them
[819]
we're so quiet
[821]
or sneaky
[823]
out of all the trucks on the road right
[825]
now the rivien r1t is still my favorite
[827]
i'm still very glad i purchased it the
[829]
power the clearance the size 10 out of
[832]
10 i would buy the truck again the only
[835]
massive downside is once again the cost
[837]
but that's how new technology goes if
[839]
you remember way back in the day over 10
[840]
years ago tesla started off selling cars
[843]
that were 250 000 a piece and now as
[846]
time progressed they're selling cars for
[848]
40 000 and i assume the price of rivians
[852]
and their lineup will just go down over
[853]
time as well i'll make another video
[855]
probably around the 10 000 mile mark
[857]
we'll see if rivien has fixed any of
[859]
these issues i brought up and we'll see
[861]
if anything else is broken kind of a
[863]
long-term durability test hit that
[865]
subscribe button if you haven't already
[866]
so you don't miss what's coming and let
[868]
me know down in the comments if there's
[870]
any specific tests you want to see run i
[872]
have not done a road trip with this yet
[874]
and i do plan on doing that make sure to
[875]
check out huel down in the video
[877]
description come hang out with me on
[878]
instagram and twitter and thanks a ton
[880]
for watching i'll see you around
