free plans aren't really free so every year at the聽
end of the year during medicare open enrollment we聽聽

see all these tv commercials with people like joe聽
namath telling you how you can get more benefits聽聽

free dental free meals free rides to the doctor聽
and it's important to understand that you need to聽聽

look at the small print these ads are targeted to聽
a very small portion of the population where you聽聽

have to really be in the low income bracket in聽
order to qualify for any of these benefits that聽聽

they describe in these commercials but it does get聽
people to call and then people get sold into these聽聽

plants so be very cautious certainly you get what聽
you pay for in health care but understand that聽聽

free certainly is generally not free when it comes聽
to medicare advantage plan and if you're new here聽聽

not a fan of medicare advantage plans i wouldn't聽聽

contracted with them so i choose not to do this聽聽

because medicare original with a supplement gives聽
you the freedom to choose any doctor any hospital聽聽

anywhere in the country that you want you have all聽
the control you don't have to ask for permission聽聽

so that's why i choose to do what i do and that's聽

good thing is medicare supplements generally have聽
no complaints so it's hard to find complaints with聽聽

a medicare supplement plan if you stay to the end聽

on hmo type plans when you make an appointment聽
at the doctor chances are your appointment is聽聽

going to be with a nurse practitioner unless it聽
gets elevated to then you get to see the doctor聽聽

so you kind of have to go through some hoops in聽
order to get to the doctor because they generally聽聽

tend to be very busy and it limits your ability聽
to really get the information certainly takes聽聽

a lot more time on your part so something to聽
understand in a medicare advantage plan as well聽聽

about medicare advantage plans is benefits costs聽聽

and networks of doctors and hospitals can change聽
every year so you may be in a medicare advantage聽聽

plan you may be happy with what you pay you may聽
be happy with the doctors that you see and the聽聽

hospitals that you have access to but what you聽
don't have control of is at the end of the year聽聽

that doctor may leave or that hospital may leave聽
or the advantage plan may terminate them and聽聽

then they are no longer accessible to you so you聽
don't have control over who you're able to go see聽聽

which hospitals you're able to use you have to use聽
what's in their network in most cases and it just聽聽

takes away your control over your own health care聽
so important to understand that one when it comes聽聽

to medicare advantage plans as well number two on聽
the list of worst complaints on medicare advantage聽聽

plans is high maximum out of pocket costs they聽
they sell these plans as if you're going to have聽聽

again a lot of free stuff and a lot of low cost聽
stuff but in reality they generally will have聽聽

high out of pocket costs in 2021 the maximum out聽
of pocket for a medicare advantage plan can be as聽聽
[249]
high as seven thousand five hundred and fifty聽
dollars now keep in mind when you're shopping聽聽

if you are going to go into a medicare advantage聽
plan the lower the premium some of them are zero聽聽
[261]
the higher it is in cost to use so it's more聽
of a pay as you go scenario where original聽聽

medicare with a supplement is has a premium on聽
the front end usually around 100 bucks a month聽聽

so not too big of a deal but then very low聽
out of pocket costs when you actually use it聽聽

and again gives you the freedom of choice on聽
original medicare to go to any doctor any hospital聽聽

that you want and and know your costs ahead of聽
time so you don't have any real surprises so聽聽

important to understand that things can聽
change with a medicare advantage plan聽聽

during the year and you're locked in for an聽
entire year so you want to make sure at the聽聽

end of the year you know exactly what changes have聽
come and if you need to make any changes yourself聽聽

and the number one worst complaint聽
about medicare advantage plans聽聽

they generally will make you get a referral聽
and that is by far the biggest complaint on聽聽

a medicare advantage plan is if you're in a plan聽
which is an hmo type plan where you have to get a聽聽
[320]
referral in order to go to see a specialist a lot聽
of times you have to let's say you want to go see聽聽
[326]
a cardiologist you have to go to a primary care聽
first and get a referral to go to the cardiologist聽聽
[332]
now a lot of times like we mentioned before in聽
another complaint you might have to see a nurse聽聽
[336]
practitioner before you see the primary before聽
you get the referral to go to the specialist so聽聽

it can be a crazy process and certainly can add聽
a tremendous amount of time especially these days聽聽
[347]
where appointments you know can be a couple weeks聽
down the road so if you have to do one appointment聽聽
[351]
before you can schedule another appointment it may聽
take a tremendous amount of time before you get to聽聽

where you really need to go so super important聽
to understand any medicare advantage plan聽聽

whether or not you need a referral so i hope you聽
