What is the National Broadband Network (NBN) & How Will it Affect Australian Businesses? - YouTube

[1]
What is the National Broadband Network
[4]
and why is it so important?
[7]
The NBN can be likened to the development of roads
[11]
in the 1900's. Back then
[14]
city streets were full up horse-drawn carts and carriages
[17]
transporting goods and people, there were very few cars.
[24]
When the government decided to invest public funds to build concrete roads
[28]
they understood this wouldn't make a horse go any faster.
[32]
Instead they had a vision of how motorised transport could drive trade
[38]
and how roads would bring our young country together.
[41]
It was argued that roads were for the few that had cars.
[46]
Then along came the Model T Ford
[50]
and by 1930 horse transport
[53]
was history. Dial-up internet
[57]
is the horse drawn carriage of digital communications
[61]
It gave many of us access to the Internet
[64]
with simple web sites and email. Slow and clunky as it was
[70]
it was enough to turn regular mail into snail mail.
[75]
Then along came ADSL
[78]
think early car, almost ten times the old dial up speed
[83]
even more in metro areas. Now we were truly
[88]
online. This led to huge innovations
[92]
like internet searching, online shopping
[95]
pictures and small videos, online payment systems and banking
[100]
and ofcourse social media.
[103]
None of this was possible with dial-up.
[108]
We can't yet imagine
[110]
what innovations and new industries the faster
[114]
cheaper NBN will bring.
[116]
The NBN
[118]
delivers information superhighway performance
[122]
right to every residential and business door
[125]
in Australia. No congested roads
[128]
just fibre highways travelling at the speed of light.
[131]
Initially, NBN will deliver
[135]
every Australian 20 times the speed
[138]
for the same cost as the average DSL services today
[142]
but that's just the start ninety-three percent
[146]
all homes can have 100MB fibre
[150]
and businesses nationally will have access to 1GB.
[156]
And boy do we need it
[158]
in the next 10 years it would take to build
[161]
analysts agree data growth will be some forty times today's levels.
[168]
So, how will NBN
[170]
affect how we live and work in the years ahead?
[175]
The NBN is a crucial part
[178]
of two other I.T revolutions. Our need for faster mobile performance
[184]
and our need to connect to the cloud.
[187]
NBN will give Australia a huge advantage in the global economy - just like roads
[194]
back in the 1900s
[196]
it will reduce the tyranny of distance opening new markets
[200]
nationally and internationally. Think
[203]
relocating distribution, contact centres
[207]
and admin to regional Australia.
[210]
Everywhere is one click away. Think
[215]
ecommerce not branches, e-tail
[219]
not retail.
[222]
Imagine full customer engagement
[226]
video conferencing with all the experts you need
[229]
around the country or on the road.
[232]
The NBN and will change what's possible in every industry, how we buy,
[238]
consume and what we expect from service.
