Channel: unknown

[0]
you begin today with the so-called
[1]
affluenza teen do you remember this guy
[3]
remember that term Ethan couch killed
[7]
four people in a drunk driving crash
[8]
injuring several others his attorneys
[11]
argued that his wealth and privilege
[13]
excused him from his own choices saying
[17]
he was never taught right from wrong
[18]
that seemed to be enough to convince a
[21]
judge because couch managed to avoid any
[24]
jail time for the deaths and was instead
[27]
sentenced to 10 years probation but that
[30]
was not the end of his story
[31]
you see couch went on to violate his
[34]
probation and fled to Mexico with the
[36]
help of his mother eventually he was
[38]
caught and he was sentenced to two years
[40]
in jail for violating the probation
[43]
that's what he went to jail for as of 24
[46]
hours ago couch is a free man more now
[49]
from NBC's Gabe Gutierrez Ethan couch
[53]
once known worldwide as the affluenza
[55]
teen walked out of jail Monday chaplain
[58]
Tim Williams who lost his best friend
[60]
and couch his drunk driving crash says
[62]
the now twenty-year-old is a changed man
[64]
Ethan has made clear to me that he wants
[66]
to walk that straight and narrow path
[68]
couch served just under two years for
[71]
violating his probation after killing
[72]
four people and injuring nine others in
[75]
a horrific drunk driving crash in 2013
[77]
when he was a juvenile from the start
[80]
the case generated one shocking headline
[82]
after another starting with the
[84]
affluenza defense not a recognized
[86]
medical condition suggesting couches
[88]
affluent upbringing left him unable to
[91]
know right from wrong and he deserved
[92]
leniency couch was sentenced to 10 years
[96]
probation and therapy tell us your name
[98]
please sir Ethan the couch two years
[102]
later couch was questioned it's part of
[103]
a civil suit by the family of one of the
[105]
victims shortly after that the story
[107]
took another bizarre turn after this
[110]
video surfaced appearing to show couch
[112]
violating his probation by being at a
[114]
party with alcohol he and his mother
[116]
Tonya fled the two were tracked down to
[118]
Mexico and returned to Texas then 19
[121]
that's when the stiffer two-year
[123]
sentence was imposed on Ethan his mother
[125]
was charged with two felonies but freed
[127]
on bail then just last week she was
[130]
really ting her terms of bail
[133]
failure urine test and was sent to the
[134]
same jail as her son his critics say 180
[138]
days behind bars for each person he
[140]
killed is a travesty I'm horribly
[143]
offended and I'm horribly angry that our
[147]
legal system has let down these victims
[150]
Gabe Gutierrez NBC News Fort Worth Texas
[153]
joining me now with more chaplain Tim
[156]
Williams his friend Brian Jennings was
[158]
killed that night that Ethan couch chose
[161]
to get behind the wheel thank you so
[163]
much for being here Tim yes thank you
[165]
you and Brian grew up together
[166]
ultimately Ethan couch served 180 80
[171]
days in prison for killing your friend
[174]
Brian what sure what what is your
[176]
reaction first of all to that that fact
[178]
180 days in jail per victim right my
[182]
opinion has been it's it's never been
[184]
enough but it is what the judge ruled
[187]
it's the best that they could do and so
[189]
we've had to accept it but it didn't
[191]
feel right tell us a little bit about
[194]
Brian sure Brian and I grew up together
[198]
in high school and in church and Brian
[202]
committed his life to ministry after his
[205]
senior year in high school so he he
[207]
really devoted to help kids
[209]
oddly enough like Ethan he was a family
[211]
man himself yes yeah three kids married
[215]
to Shawna mm-hmm and that night there
[217]
was a woman parked on the side of the
[219]
road with car trouble
[220]
Brian pulled over to help her he did he
[223]
sure did told the boys to stay in that
[225]
truck yes and Ethan came by with several
[228]
kids in his car and ran them down ran
[231]
them down because his blood-alcohol
[232]
limit was three times the legal limit
[235]
which was shocking and horrifying and
[238]
yet what really made news was his
[241]
defense of his own actions when you
[243]
heard that he was looking to escape
[244]
responsibility by saying his wealth and
[246]
privilege led him to not understand that
[249]
it was wrong to get behind the wheel
[250]
after consuming that much alcohol what
[252]
was your reaction I was very upsetting
[254]
to hear the this new word this made-up
[257]
word that I'm too wealthy to have been
[260]
taught right and wrong I think that all
[263]
of us know that even as little kids were
[265]
taught that you know
[265]
kindergarten onward so it just didn't
[268]
really fly with me because it was his
[270]
choice to consume the alcohol and get
[272]
behind the wheel at age 16 it was his
[275]
choice
[276]
and that's why Mothers Against Drunk
[277]
Driving is so angry about this verdict
[279]
and what's happened with this young man
[281]
because they don't feel that adequate
[283]
punishment or an adequate message has
[285]
been sent to society you're an
[286]
extraordinary man because not only did
[288]
you lose your friend in this
[289]
circumstance but is it true you went to
[291]
visit Ethan couch in prison and that is
[294]
true after he went to Mexico the thought
[296]
came to mind that maybe I should visit
[299]
with him just to see if there's any hope
[300]
or to see where he's at it was that
[302]
simple what happened well in the
[305]
transfer trials when he got captured and
[307]
he was brought back to Tarrant County he
[310]
went through the juvenile system and
[311]
then was transferred to the adult system
[313]
and in those hearings I just bumped into
[315]
the sheriff at the time a couple of
[317]
times and I asked him maybe is it
[319]
possible to meet with Ethan certainly
[321]
but you know with the glass in between
[323]
us mm-hmm and so when you did that what
[326]
was he like
[327]
well even was in solitary at the time so
[331]
it was a video conference for many
[333]
months which as you might imagine is not
[335]
very personal to meet this kind of guy
[338]
right through video conferencing and so
[341]
he was of course shocked with the
[343]
connection he didn't understand why
[345]
would you be here because basically you
[347]
know I feel hated by everybody and I
[350]
said well yes but you know as a
[351]
Christian I'm here to see if there's
[353]
hope for you I'm here to see if
[355]
forgiveness is something you can receive
[356]
did he want forgiveness he felt he
[359]
didn't deserve it so he didn't even have
[362]
the mindset to seek it because when we
[365]
see him playing the beer pong after four
[368]
people are dead and a fifth is paralyzed
[370]
and can no longer speak and he hurts so
[372]
many people and went in there and argued
[374]
that his wealth excused it he doesn't
[377]
have that much empathy from people we
[379]
haven't heard the call for forgiveness
[380]
or the request on his part no we haven't
[382]
and well the public hasn't Ethan and I
[385]
have gone through this but I would say
[386]
that you know obviously when you look at
[388]
what he did
[390]
and then he did again I think it's easy
[393]
to conclude I don't think you're getting
[394]
at Ethan mm-hmm and do you think that
[396]
now I do I think that it took a lot of
[399]
of time just really helping to discuss
[402]
like things that some parents teach kids
[404]
right and just try to fill in some gaps
[406]
and deal with some character development
[408]
beyond the pain and the suffering he
[411]
caused and all this loss I mean that
[412]
that was later so but now that he's out
[415]
do you think he's prepared to act as a
[419]
responsible citizen well I've said
[422]
before that I think he has the tools I
[424]
think we've spent a lot of time together
[426]
discussing good character who you hang
[429]
out with influential issues making wise
[432]
decisions not just some impulsive
[434]
decision so I think he has the tools the
[437]
of course the balls in his court as they
[438]
say right like he has the ability to
[440]
make another bad choice how-how's
[443]
Brian's family how are his kids it's
[446]
really tough every time this comes up
[448]
you know it even makes me you know get
[450]
emotional it's very tough to see the
[452]
news it's tough to hear that he got out
[455]
it's it's just very hard Wow
[458]
thank you for coming on telling us your
[460]
story I want to let you know that we got
[462]
a statement from Ethan couches attorneys
[464]
that reads in part Ethan has admitted
[466]
his conduct accepted responsibility for
[468]
his actions and felt true remorse for
[470]
the terrible consequences of those
[471]
actions he does not wish to draw
[473]
attention to himself and requests
[476]
privacy all the best to you sir thank
