As you know that on 04 Jun 2021,
[8]
during the India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting
[11]
Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh approved the
[15]
Request For Proposal (RFP) for construction of six Conventional Submarines under Project 75(I).
[21]
This is a very important step as these submarines will be much advanced than the India’s Kalvari class submarines
[27]
and that’s why in today’s Guarding India video we will be telling you all the details about the Project 75(I) of Indian Navy.
[34]
So let's start.
[36]
Guarding India Intro
[40]
Project 75(I) is Indian Navy’s submarine construction project
[43]
in which six conventional submarines equipped with
[46]
Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system are to be constructed in India.
[49]
The total cost of construction of all six submarines will be approximately Rs 43,000 crore and
[53]
it will be constructed inside India through Strategic Partnership Model.
[56]
In foreign media, this new submarine project of India is being referred as the Mother of all Underwater Deal
[62]
as it is one of the largest submarine orders in the entire world.
[65]
This is first Indian project which will be executed under Strategic Partnership model
[70]
and it is also the biggest ‘Make in India’ project till date.
[73]
This project is part of 30 year Submarine Construction Program
[77]
of Indian Navy in which total 24 submarines were to be constructed
[80]
of which 18 were conventional submarines and 6 were planned to be the nuclear attack submarines (SSN).
[83]
I would like to tell you that Indian Defence Ministry approved 30 year Submarine Construction Program in 1999
[90]
and Project 75(I) was approved in November 2007.
[94]
However, till date no decision had been taken on this.
[97]
Therefore, the latest approval of Defence Ministry is being considered as very important.
[101]
In Project 75 (I), the submarine designs of five International submarine companies have been selected
[107]
who will be participating for competition to win this tender.
[109]
Number 1 is French Naval Group’s Scorpène-class submarine which is already in Indian Navy service
[115]
and is also called as Kalvari-class submarine.
[117]
Number 2 is Russian Rubin Design Bureau’s latest Amur Class Submarine,
[122]
Number 3 is German ThyssenKrupp Marine System’s HDW Class Type 214 Submarine,
[128]
Number 4 is Spanish Navantia’s S-80 Submarine
[131]
and Number 5 is South Korean company Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine.
[137]
Two Indian shipyards have been shortlisted to work along with these five international companies.
[142]
Number 1 is state-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited
[145]
which is presently constructing Scorpion means Kalvari class Submarine
[149]
and second is private sector firm Larsen & Toubro which is
[152]
involved in the construction of India’s Arihant Class ballistic missile Submarines (SSBN).
[157]
In this project the selected Indian Company will be receiving the complete submarine manufacturing technology
[164]
transfer from the foreign company which will be selected after the Indian Navy’s competition.
[166]
Thereafter, all six submarines will be constructed within India.
[169]
Indian Navy has not disclosed much about the features of these submarines. However, this RFP says
[175]
that all submarines will be equipped with foreign air-independent propulsion means AIP technology
[180]
which will enable these submarines submarine to remain on underwater dive for more than 20-30 days at a single stretch.
[187]
Project 75(I) submarines will have state of the art advanced stealth features
[190]
and detecting them will be very difficult for the enemy ships and submarines.
[195]
Besides this, Project 75(I) submarines will also have advanced foreign and Indian weapons.
[199]
It is expected that these submarines will be equipped with BrahMos-2 hypersonic anti ship missiles
[206]
with 1000 kilometer range and Nirbhay long range cruise missile with 1500 kilometer range.
[210]
Due to these two missiles, these new submarines of Indian Navy will be able to destroy targets on both on sea and land.
[217]
Additionally, Project 75(I) submarines will also have other new
[220]
technologies like new communication system, advanced sonar system
[223]
and many other latest technologies which are presently classified.
[227]
Now we will discuss why Project 75(I) submarines are so important for Indian Navy.
[232]
Actually at present, Indian Navy has only 15 submarines. Out of these 8 are Russian Kilo class submarines,
[238]
4 are German Shishumar class submarine
[241]
and three are Kalvari class Submarines.
[243]
Besides this three Kalvari class submarines are presently under construction
[246]
which means in future Indian Navy will have total 18 submarines.
[250]
However, Pakistan Navy which has far lesser coastline than
[255]
India, Pakistan Navy which has far lesser coastline than India, presently has 5 conventional submarines.
[257]
Additionally, Pakistan has also purchased eight Type 039A submarines means Yuan class Submarine from China.
[264]
This means that Pakistan Navy will have total 13 submarines
[268]
and for facing these submarines Indian Navy will just have 18 submarines which will be inadequate
[273]
as Indian Navy has not only to take care of Pakistan but also has to look after the security of entire Indian Ocean.
[278]
Therefore, Indian Navy urgently requires these submarines of Project 75(I).
[282]
Finally, on behalf of Team Guarding India I would like to say
[285]
that Project 75(I) RFP is a very good step
[290]
and we hope for timely completion of this project
[293]
as it is expect that Indian Navy will finalise this deal in one or two years
[297]
and 6-7 years after that means in 2029 or in 2030 Indian Navy will get these new submarines.
