RETIREMENT A PROBLEM SOLVED | Why We Sold Our House - YouTube
Channel: This Is Our Retirement
[0]
Today we are going to talk about聽
retirement a problem solved聽聽
[8]
- And just before we get into this weighty subject聽
we are a Tina and Norm we talk all things聽聽
[15]
retirement - Yes we do and also if you haven't聽
been to our channel before please subscribe,聽聽
[24]
like, give us a thumbs up and share it really helps聽
our channel - It does so Tina one of the biggest聽聽
[35]
feedbacks that we got was when we suggested聽
selling the family home - This is true - We did聽聽
[42]
get a lot of comments about that and people giving聽
their side of the argument so we thought it's such聽聽
[51]
a good subject that we could flesh it out a bit聽
more - We thought it's a big thing to talk about聽聽
[59]
isn't it - So one of the big things that聽
people had about keeping the family home was聽聽
[68]
- That everybody comes back at Christmas and it's聽
the memories of wanting everybody to keep coming聽聽
[75]
back to their house - So they're grown up children聽
have a place to come back to a sense of family聽聽
[80]
- (Tina, yes) - Well what's the real reality of that because聽
we've been through this - The reality is they don't聽聽
[88]
because your grown-up kids move on and聽
they have their kids and they want to聽聽
[95]
start their own life with their own traditions聽
- They go and buy a house which they're proud of聽聽
[100]
and they want to show it off to you as parents聽
and so they don't want to come to your house at聽聽
[106]
Christmas and Thanksgiving they want you to come聽
to their new house, generally speaking and share聽聽
[113]
in their happiness of them building their new聽
life - This is true - So there's myth number one gone聽聽
[122]
- And the other thing too is you have to think about聽
the isolation if you keep staying in your house聽聽
[133]
- We've mentioned this on a couple of occasions聽
about social isolation and we saw it with聽聽
[140]
Tina's parents (Tina, yeah) - When they got elderly they聽
were still in the family home and they could聽聽
[147]
go weeks without seeing anybody and to be honest聽
with you the Amazon delivery person isn't a friend聽聽
[154]
- No so you can't really rely on those in actual聽
fact Norm when we had the house we could go quite聽聽
[161]
a while without seeing people on a day-to-day聽
basis - Society has become very insular and people聽聽
[169]
don't just knock on your front聽
door anymore or drop in for a cup of tea聽聽
[174]
- As they used to - Not like our parents聽
were (Tina, no) - So the older you get the you'll聽聽
[183]
find that your friends move away because聽
they're selling their houses and downsizing聽聽
[189]
or god forbid they're dying off聽
so you don't want to be the last聽聽
[194]
people standing in your street and everybody else聽
around are newcomers and you don't know them so聽聽
[202]
we found coming into the apartment building and聽
this is a brand new experience for us we have聽聽
[207]
never lived in an apartment building - No we haven't聽
-To get to our car we have to go in an聽聽
[213]
elevator, well we don't have to but we do - Sometimes聽
we take the stairs if we're feeling as if we need聽聽
[220]
a bit of fitness - So you take the elevator there's聽
nearly always somebody there and so you have a聽聽
[225]
quick chat (Tina, yeah) - Or there's somebody walking past聽
you in the hallway have a quick chat get down to聽聽
[231]
the lobby check your mailbox there's other聽
people milling around you have another quick聽聽
[238]
chat so there's always somebody around and it聽
seems people in apartments are more open to have聽聽
[246]
- Conversation I think because they know everybody's聽
similar so it's like having your own mini house on聽聽
[251]
the apartment floor and you've got your own place聽
but you will meet and talk to people and we find聽聽
[257]
it great don't we - So we have another solution to聽
selling your home we're not going to be beaten on聽聽
[263]
this one - No - So it's all about downsizing and
getting rid of a lifetime of accumulated stuff聽聽
[273]
we've all done it and minimalism is really聽
fashionable at the moment and if you can聽聽
[279]
enter into that it will be beneficial (Tina, yes) - So聽
we're saying rent an apartment don't even think聽聽
[286]
about renting a condo - No we're not keen on that聽
are we because there are a lot of hidden costs聽聽
[294]
with condos with the condo fees - Yeah if the聽
building is underfunded for maintenance then聽聽
[302]
they'll increase the condo fee or they'll have an聽
extraordinary condo fee where you have to stump up聽聽
[310]
five grand or something like this it's happened聽
to a few of our friends so we've had first-hand聽聽
[316]
knowledge - Yeah haven't we so we still believe in聽
sell your home downsize rent an apartment and then聽聽
[324]
here is the answer to the problem - Well what acts like聽
a magnet for your grown-up kids and grandchildren聽聽
[332]
it's just like a magic bullet to them wanting to聽
see you - And that is buy a recreational property聽聽
[346]
- Something like a trailer like we have on a site聽
(Tina, yes) - Preferably one of those sites that's by a lake聽聽
[354]
and it's a bit of a resort so there's stuff going聽
on - And if it's got a little shop that sells ice聽聽
[361]
cream and it might have a chip truck it might have聽
different things going on but it if it has a lake聽聽
[369]
where they probably rent boats do you think Norm聽
or you can get your own boat - Yeah and everybody聽聽
[376]
wants to go to the country in the summertime聽
go and have a lakeside experience certainly in聽聽
[382]
central Canada so that's our solution is you聽
rent an apartment buy a recreational property and聽聽
[392]
it could be a cottage it could be a trailer聽
like ours or it could be one of those fancy park聽聽
[401]
model trailers that we can't afford - I know they're聽
beautiful aren't they're just like mini houses - Two聽聽
[406]
story lots of bedrooms - But again on the lake where聽
you can go out you can walk around it you can meet聽聽
[413]
people - And we managed to find a resort on a lake聽
that has three swimming pools indoors so if the聽聽
[419]
weather's not good you can swim inside it's got聽
a lake with a safe swimming area where no boats聽聽
[426]
can go it has a a chip truck they bring in聽
food trucks throughout the summer season different聽聽
[434]
ones like Mexican and they even brought in the聽
Beaver Tail truck - And they have a farmers market聽聽
[441]
that come in don't you do twice twice a week - So聽
lots to be going on it's in a nice area that's聽聽
[450]
good to explore so your adult kids are going to聽
want to come and see you - Yeah and they also have聽聽
[458]
activities going on to amuse the little grandkids聽
they have things yeah children's programs but they聽聽
[465]
also have adult programs too where they have music聽
come in and yeah you can get together for concerts聽聽
[471]
and drinks - And listen to some music the other聽
thing is it builds memories it builds memories for聽聽
[481]
your grandchildren and Tina had experience of this聽
with her Grandmother she had a caravan in England聽聽
[489]
- Yeah absolutely I have so many wonderful memories聽
of every summer I would go to my Grandparents and聽聽
[502]
it was actually I think it was in a site聽
Norm in Wales in a little place called Harlech聽聽
[511]
and I remember we used to go pick mushrooms聽
in the fields take them back and fry them聽聽
[516]
and we'd go fishing on the beach and I have聽
all those memories now it's wonderful so what聽聽
[523]
we're suggesting is make those new memories聽
- Yeah and you can be the leader in your family,
[533]
because kids grown-up kids these days are having聽
a tough time affording houses they're going up so聽聽
[540]
so much so if you came up with a recreational聽
property you're giving a gift to your children聽聽
[545]
and your grandchildren so that's our retirement聽
a problem solved yes sell the house downsize,聽聽
[552]
recreational property and you will be the most聽
popular parents in the world - Yeah and you'll聽聽
[558]
have great memories and we can't wait for another聽
couple of months till we can get into ours (Norm, exactly)聽聽
[568]
- And it's wonderful isn't it - So thanks聽
for watching our video again and we聽聽
[575]
hope you're all keeping well - And staying聽
safe and till the next time bye bye, - bye
