[5]
the sustainability efforts that
[8]
expediters really aren't something that
[9]
we view as a part from who we are or
[12]
apart from our culture in fact it's just
[14]
the opposite we think the root of our
[17]
sustainability efforts is our culture
[19]
and we think that having a
[22]
sustainability program really just gives
[24]
life to a lot of passion that our
[26]
employees already have and that passion
[28]
is what empowers us not only to do the
[31]
things that are important from a
[32]
sustainability standpoint but also just
[34]
to feel motivated at work and passionate
[36]
and taking care of our customers so I
[39]
think the call to action these days for
[41]
many organizations is around a lot of
[43]
buzzwords sustainability or ESG which is
[47]
environmental social and governance and
[49]
you hear about these things and you hear
[52]
and see white papers being published and
[55]
lots of pundits talking about these
[57]
things but for us at Expeditors the call
[59]
to action is let's focus on things that
[61]
we know we can do that actually make a
[64]
difference within our communities to
[66]
protect the environment to take care of
[68]
our people to volunteer from a corporate
[72]
social responsibility standpoint and
[74]
just from a governance standpoint to
[76]
make sure that we're a well-run
[77]
organization that adheres to our co2
[80]
Business Conduct so Expeditors has been
[83]
in the logistics industry for over 30
[85]
years
[85]
so we've been doing this for a long time
[87]
as far as measuring their carbon
[90]
footprint and their impact that's more
[92]
recent and honestly the science behind
[94]
it is continuing to evolve as we get
[96]
better at it and that's not just us
[98]
that's all across the industry as we
[100]
figure out exactly you know what is the
[102]
most efficient and what different
[105]
alternative types of energy can we use
[107]
and still get goods where they need to
[109]
go but we are well-positioned to make
[113]
these decisions and to help our
[114]
customers and be more green and be more
[117]
efficient because we already have these
[119]
partnerships we are located around the
[122]
globe we have our fingers and all these
[125]
modes of transportation so as customers
[127]
are looking to innovate and
[129]
reduce their carbon footprint we are
[131]
ready to help them do that
[133]
building a strong company and having a
[136]
strong community they're not at odds
[137]
they're not different I don't think that
[140]
you can have a strong company and a
[143]
brand and have a community that suffers
[146]
so the more that you give back and you
[148]
more support them they support each
[150]
other if we've tried to compile a list
[152]
of all the things that we do in all our
[154]
offices to serve those communities it
[156]
would be a long list and that's though
[159]
when you look at those things and you
[160]
travel that's what makes you so proud of
[162]
being working here in Expeditors because
[164]
you realize that it's an office in Asia
[168]
or Europe addressing things that are
[170]
issues and problems in their communities
[172]
and what looks what social
[175]
responsibility is in particular office
[177]
is very different than other office and
[179]
that's what I love the most when you add
[180]
those all up we have a pretty pretty
[183]
unique and different social
[185]
responsibility than most companies
[187]
health safety and security ties into
[190]
sustainability really through through
[192]
one Avenue and that it has to everything
[193]
to do with people and not just the
[196]
employees of our organization but our
[198]
service providers and our customer
[200]
employees as well you cannot be a
[202]
responsible reputable organization
[205]
without having that strong commitment to
[207]
people having having had to live through
[210]
you know a an event at a district that
[214]
had to do with a natural disaster and
[217]
seeing how how organized and efficient
[220]
Expeditors was in responding to that
[223]
reaching out to its employees making
[225]
sure they were safe making sure that
[228]
they had the supplies that they needed
[230]
ultimately watching a network as a whole
[234]
donate and ship supplies in order to
[237]
take care of the affected individuals it
[241]
there was no greater feeling in the
[242]
world not only did it give me pride to
[244]
work for the company but it gave me a
[248]
sense of almost dedication you know it's
[252]
something I want to be a part of I
[254]
couldn't imagine I couldn't imagine ever
[256]
working anywhere else after that so it's
[259]
very important for us that not only do
[261]
we have standards and not only do we do
[264]
we outline requirements and expectations
[266]
but we need to measure ourselves against
[268]
those and we're constantly doing that
[270]
we're constantly testing ourselves
[272]
whether it be through periodic
[274]
inspections whether it be through
[276]
organized internal audits or whether it
[279]
be through your subsequent visits by
[281]
national governmental agencies all of
[284]
these things constantly keep us in a
[286]
state of preparation to make sure that
[288]
we are executing our promise and
[290]
ultimately our promise is to make sure
[293]
that our people are taken care of
[294]
governance is related to ESG in the
[297]
broader sense of sustainability if you
[299]
think about sustainability and what that
[300]
means making sure that we're here for
[304]
the long term that we're building value
[306]
over the long term both for ourselves
[308]
but our stakeholders our customers our
[310]
employees and so having good governance
[313]
principles and good governance standards
[315]
helps make sure that those are
[317]
repeatable that they're consistently
[319]
applied it also governance is a living
[322]
thing it's a living set of systems and
[325]
processes so if there are improvements
[328]
to be made
[329]
we make them governance is a set of
[332]
systems and processes that helps us and
[335]
guides us and making our decisions and
[337]
it's critical that we get this right
[340]
because it's the way that we make sure
[342]
that we comply with our code and the
[345]
values that are in our code and it's
[347]
it's it's important for our employees to
[350]
make sure that one they're complying
[353]
with the code and also for their benefit
[355]
and it's important for other
[356]
stakeholders such as customers and the
[358]
community at large because a lot of what
[360]
our code
[361]
addresses are things for their benefit
[364]
as well I think we do a fantastic job in
[368]
in terms of designing that governance
[370]
trying to take into account both the
[373]
importance of consistency and
[375]
standardization and compliance while
[378]
also allowing our people and empowering
[381]
our people to do their daily jobs
[383]
and I think we do that exceedingly well
[385]
so I'd say in this day and age there are
[388]
companies and then there are
[391]
institutions that understand that
[393]
they're part of a broader social fabric
[394]
and Expeditors is the latter and our
[399]
goal in this area really is to make sure
[401]
that as we grow and continue to grow as
[404]
an organization it is not solely for the
[407]
purpose of moving cargo which is our
[410]
fundamental business value that we
[413]
deliver but that we are an organization
[415]
with which our customers and our service
[417]
providers and our employees can align
[419]
and feel proud about that alignment and
[422]
feel proud that that working with
[424]
Expeditors aligns with their values as
[427]
an organization and I think that
[428]
translates to the investment community
[430]
as well all of us invests in funds for
[434]
purposes of retirement and increasingly
[437]
one of the demographics is that people
[440]
don't want their money for investment
[443]
purposes going to organizations that
[445]
don't reflect their values so we want to
[447]
make sure that our values as a company
[449]
reflect those of an organization that
[452]
cares about the fabric of the community
[454]
in which we work I think from Expeditors
[457]
our customers can expect that we will
[460]
continue to focus on our sustainability
[463]
efforts in a way that makes sense for
[464]
our culture and the reason I say that is
[467]
there are organizations out there in a
[470]
number of industries that are doing
[472]
things from a sustainability standpoint
[474]
based upon advice they got from an
[476]
outside consultant that's not really our
[479]
approach we may not be the flashiest in
[482]
this area and that's because we're
[483]
really focused internally on things that
[485]
we can do from protecting the
[488]
environment security health and safety
[490]
corporate social responsibility and
[492]
governance things that we can do
[494]
practically that are going to make a
[496]
difference we don't feel that there's
[499]
great value in lofty goals that don't
[502]
align with somebody's culture or that
[504]
are just there to make a flashy headline
[506]
we're gonna just keep grinding along on
[508]
this to find creative solutions that
[510]
make business sense and can also do
[512]
things to protect our
[514]
our communities that's what our
[516]
customers can expect from us and that's
[518]
what we're committed to doing so that we
[519]
can continue to be a great institution
