Learn Your Bass Fretboard Notes (Easy Starter Method) - YouTube
Channel: BassBuzz
[0]
welcome I'm Josh with bass buzz learning
[2]
your bass fretboard notes can feel
[4]
totally overwhelming but what if you're
[9]
jamming with a guitarist and then they
[11]
say I'm playing a C chord - an F chord -
[18]
G chord back to F
[21]
[Music]
[24]
how are you supposed to know where to
[26]
find the right notes I'm going to give
[28]
you an easy way to get started with
[30]
understanding your fret board so that
[32]
you can handle situations like this and
[34]
more let's do it when you're trying to
[39]
learn your fret board a bass teacher
[41]
will usually show you a chart that looks
[43]
like this and then your brain explodes
[46]
and you die instead of hitting you with
[50]
all that at once let's skip the theory
[52]
that you don't need right now and focus
[55]
on the notes that really matter the
[57]
money notes in this lesson we're
[61]
focusing on the first four frets only
[64]
and they're called the money notes
[65]
because that's what we bass players
[67]
really get paid to play yes learning the
[74]
rest of the neck matters too but you can
[76]
play most bass lines in this area and
[79]
knowing these notes means you'll be able
[81]
to survive a jam sessions when people
[83]
are calling out chords at you and we're
[84]
actually going to do that together
[86]
later but first we're going to go
[87]
through four steps to get you jam ready
[92]
the English alphabet has 26 letters but
[96]
the musical alphabet only has 12 notes
[98]
so this should be easy right
[100]
the best way to visualize the musical
[102]
alphabet is on a piano keyboard so there
[104]
are twelve notes seven on the white keys
[106]
and five on the Black Keys we name the
[109]
white key notes with letter names a B
[113]
F G and then we loop around back to a
[116]
and we would just keep looping from
[118]
there so as we go up to higher sounding
[120]
notes we go forwards to the alphabet
[123]
abcdefg a and as we go down to lower
[127]
sounding notes we go reverse through the
[128]
alphabet a G F
[132]
Hey easy enough right but what do we do
[135]
about these Black Keys we already used
[136]
up the letter names on the white keys so
[139]
we're gonna use a concept called sharps
[140]
and flats to help us move those letter
[142]
names around so if I go to a D on the
[145]
piano which is one of the white keys if
[146]
I want to raise that D to the next note
[148]
I'm gonna call it D sharp which looks
[151]
like a little hash tag and if I want to
[153]
lower that D to the next black key I'm
[155]
gonna call it D flat which looks like a
[157]
little letter B so sharp raises the note
[160]
flat lowers the note or if we go to a G
[163]
on the piano same thing if I go up from
[165]
the G I get G sharp if I go back to G
[168]
and then go down I get G flat sharp
[170]
raises flat lowers here's the part that
[173]
confuses people sometimes that means
[175]
that each black key can have two names
[178]
okay so if we go back to that note that
[181]
we called E flat earlier so we go to D
[183]
we lower the D that gives us D flat but
[186]
what if we went to C and then raised the
[188]
C then that same key would be called C
[190]
sharp so that key right there can be D
[193]
flat or C sharp if we think of it as
[195]
lowering a D it's D flat if we think of
[197]
it as raising a C it's C sharp two names
[200]
one note so let's go through the
[202]
alphabet from the beginning so we'll
[204]
start on a then we go up to the black
[206]
key so that's gonna be called a sharp
[208]
and then we go to the next white key
[210]
which is B the next letter in the
[211]
alphabet and then what are we gonna do
[213]
there's no black key between these two
[215]
notes right so that next note is just C
[217]
so there's no black key between B and C
[219]
so we keep going C raise that to C sharp
[223]
then we're on D and raise that to D
[226]
sharp and then we're on E and now again
[228]
no black key so we end up going straight
[230]
to the next letter which is F so these
[232]
two spots are very important because
[234]
there are no black keys here between B
[236]
and C and between E and F otherwise this
[239]
alphabet is symmetrical so you can
[241]
remember that there are no black keys
[243]
between these particular notes because
[245]
they really like each other
[246]
and they wanted to stay extra friendly
[248]
and buddied closed e to F be to see
[251]
extra friendly and buddied closed
[253]
mnemonic device let's put that all
[256]
together and then we'll actually start
[257]
checking it out on the bass so do this
[259]
with me I'm gonna go slow so you can say
[261]
your answers before I say them and you
[263]
kind of test yourself that way because
[265]
this is
[265]
important okay so we start on a and then
[268]
if we raise a to that black key it's
[270]
called a sharp right sharps raise the
[272]
note next white key is the next letter
[274]
in the alphabet which is B and then what
[276]
do we do we go straight to the next
[278]
letter because there's no black key so
[280]
that's C then we raise C to C sharp and
[283]
then next white key is D raise the D to
[287]
D sharp next white key is e then what's
[291]
the next key it's another white key so
[293]
it's another letter which is F then we
[295]
raise the F to F sharp then we're on G
[298]
and then we raise the G what do we get G
[300]
sharp and then what's next we loop
[302]
through the alphabet abcdefg back to a
[305]
okay let's do the same thing in Reverse
[307]
now we're gonna think about lowering the
[309]
notes instead of raising them so we're
[310]
up on that higher a we're gonna lower it
[313]
to that black key what's that going to
[314]
be called a flat right flat is when you
[317]
lower a note and then we're on the next
[319]
white key which will be G and then we
[321]
lower that to G flat and then we're on
[324]
the next letter which is F right we're
[326]
going reverse alphabetical because we're
[328]
going to lower notes now what happens
[330]
there's no black key so we go straight
[332]
from F to E because they're
[334]
extra-friendly F to e e to F and then
[337]
we're on a we lower the e we're on
[339]
e-flat and then the next white key is d
[342]
what happens if we lower D we get D flat
[345]
and then the next key down is C and then
[348]
what happens we go straight to B because
[350]
they're close buddies buddied close the
[353]
amana device okay so we're on B we lower
[355]
the beat what do we get we get a B flat
[357]
and then we're back to a where we
[360]
started nice work now would be a good
[362]
time to click Subscribe and then click
[364]
the bell so that you get notified when
[366]
new lessons come out now let's take what
[368]
we just learned and actually apply it to
[370]
the bass to find your bass fretboard
[375]
notes first you need to know the names
[377]
of your open strings the standard way to
[379]
tune a base is e a D G so E is the
[383]
biggest fattest string closest to your
[385]
face and then the next one over is a and
[388]
then D and then G E a
[391]
D G if you want to remember this with
[394]
another silly mnemonic device all you
[395]
have to do is remember to eat and drink
[398]
grapes mmm let's see if you've really
[404]
got that I'm gonna play and point to the
[406]
strings and you tell me the names okay
[407]
how about this one did you say it out
[410]
loud I'm waiting I'm waiting okay East
[413]
ring right okay how about this that's
[415]
the D eat and drink okay how about the
[418]
smallest one that's furthest away from
[419]
you g string eat and drink grapes and
[422]
what's left
[423]
process of elimination tells you this is
[425]
the a string okay let's do that again
[428]
but faster tell me as fast as you can
[430]
this string go g string this string E
[432]
string this string D string this string
[435]
a string great you're certified in your
[439]
open strings knowledge now back to the
[443]
money notes we're gonna take a break
[445]
from sharps and flats and just find the
[447]
naturals the plain letter names in our
[450]
money zone which is the first four frets
[452]
so remember on piano the smallest
[454]
distance we can travel is one piano key
[457]
so we're on a the next closest note
[459]
above that is a sharp and then the next
[461]
closest note above that is B next one is
[463]
C so the smallest distance we can move
[465]
is one piano key that's the same
[468]
distance that you travel by moving one
[469]
fret on your bass so if I play an open a
[472]
string and I go up one fret to the first
[474]
fret I'm on an a-sharp
[476]
if I go up another fret that's just like
[478]
moving up another piano key and I'm on a
[480]
beat and if we go again we go straight
[482]
to C because there's no black key there
[485]
so the only difference is that you can't
[487]
see the white and black keys on the bass
[489]
but one fret equals one piano key of
[492]
movement so we're gonna try to memorize
[494]
three natural notes per string and
[496]
that'll give you the starting point you
[498]
need to be able to find any note in a
[500]
jam session situation so our three notes
[503]
on the E string are e f and g e is the
[506]
open string you already know that one
[508]
and then our F is on the first fret
[510]
because
[511]
extra-friendly so they're right next to
[512]
each other anf and then we go to the
[514]
third fret for G because there is a
[516]
black key between F and G we just can't
[519]
see it because they're invisible on the
[520]
base so E open string F first fret G on
[524]
the third fret okay pop quiz what's the
[527]
name of the note on the third fret
[528]
it's a G right what about the open
[531]
string is e and the first fret is f e f
[534]
g okay let's move to the a string now
[537]
we're gonna learn a B and C so our open
[540]
string is a and then for B we go to the
[543]
second fret and then for C we go to the
[546]
third fret those are right next to each
[548]
other right buddy - close no Black Keys
[550]
so a open string B on the second fret C
[553]
on the third fret okay pop quiz what's
[557]
the second fret of the a string called B
[559]
right because it's one black key away so
[562]
we got an A and then a black heat and
[564]
then B which is the next white key and
[566]
then where a seat right there on the
[568]
third fret right next to be okay let's
[570]
do a little quiz and what we got so far
[571]
so what are the three notes on the E
[573]
string we've got the open E and then our
[576]
next note is F and where is that first
[578]
fret and then the next note is G which
[582]
is on the third fret okay I know it
[585]
might seem a little silly to answer
[586]
these questions out loud when you're
[587]
just talking at your screen but it's
[589]
really helpful and it's important to
[590]
make sure that you know these on your
[592]
own without me just telling you the
[593]
answers okay
[594]
so e F G on the E string and then what
[596]
about the a string the open string is a
[598]
we know that okay where's B it's on the
[601]
second fret right and then where's C
[603]
third fret so open e first fret F third
[608]
fret G open a second fret B third fret C
[612]
D string time we're gonna have D E and F
[616]
on this string so D is the open string
[618]
and then for E or do you think we're
[620]
gonna go second fret right because we
[622]
got to skip over the black key is
[623]
between D and E and then F will be or do
[627]
you think it's gonna be third fret or
[628]
fourth fret it's gonna be on the third
[630]
fret because those two notes are
[631]
extra-friendly so there's no black key
[633]
between them d e half open string E on
[637]
the second fret F
[639]
the third fret now let's move right to
[640]
the g string which is going to be G a B
[643]
so G is the open string and then a will
[646]
be on the second fret and B will be up
[648]
on the fourth fret so our first fourth
[650]
fret note okay
[651]
so G second fret is a fourth fret B
[656]
okay I'm gonna test you on those now
[658]
because this is the foundation of being
[660]
able to find notes for a jam session or
[662]
just for playing a bass line
[664]
okay so first let's go through them in
[665]
order the way we just learn them
[667]
together so first is the e string what
[670]
are the three notes on that string E and
[672]
then F and then what G and those are on
[675]
the open string first fret is F and then
[678]
G is on the third fret okay so next
[680]
string over from e is a right eat and
[683]
drink grapes so open a and then what
[686]
what are the other notes on that string
[687]
a B and C right we're just going
[689]
sequentially through the alphabet so a
[692]
is on the open string where's the B
[693]
second fret and where is the C third
[696]
fret okay so EF G a B C now what are the
[700]
three notes on the D string D F right
[703]
just continuing through the alphabet so
[705]
D is the open string and then where's
[707]
the e second fret and where is the F
[709]
third fret nice and last what's the name
[712]
of your last string eat and drink grapes
[715]
it's the g string okay and what are our
[717]
notes on the g string G a and B right
[720]
cycling through the alphabet G we
[722]
finished we loop around back to a and
[724]
then B okay so where's the a 2nd fret
[726]
and then where's the B 4th friend great
[729]
ok final test I'm gonna go in random
[732]
order you're gonna call these out to me
[734]
when I ask you questions ok so where is
[736]
the C on the a string 3rd fret right ABC
[742]
ok how about an F on the E string 1st
[745]
fret ok so I'm on the 4th fret of the g
[749]
string what's the name of that note G a
[752]
B yes ok what about the 2nd fret on the
[757]
D string it's an E and let's see how
[762]
about find me a G on the E string 3rd
[766]
fret right awesome so why are we
[768]
stopping at 3 naturals per string why
[770]
don't we do 4 we'll check it out so we
[772]
go E
[772]
G on the E string the next natural note
[775]
would be the a on the 5th fret but
[777]
that's the same note as our open a
[779]
string and same thing if we keep going
[781]
we go ABC on the a string right and then
[784]
we would go to D would be the next
[786]
natural note which would be on the 5th
[787]
fret but that's the same note as the
[789]
open D string even if we keep going de F
[794]
on the D string next natural note on
[796]
that string would be G on the 5th fret
[798]
but that's the same note as the open g
[800]
string so the 5th fret of the E string
[802]
is the same as the open a 5th fret of
[805]
the a is the same as the open D and 5th
[807]
fret of the D is the same as the open G
[809]
so you've already got those notes in
[810]
your bag so you don't need to memorize
[812]
them now unless you want an extra
[814]
challenge alright time to fill in the
[819]
gaps and put the rest of those money
[821]
notes in your wallet ok so remember on
[825]
the piano keyboard how we got to the
[827]
sharps and flats we start on a letter
[829]
name like G and if we raise G then we
[831]
get to G sharp if we lower G then we get
[833]
to G flat and that's by moving one piano
[835]
key in either direction one piano key up
[837]
is G sharp one piano key down is G flat
[840]
it's the exact same thing on bass so
[842]
find me a G on the E string where is
[846]
that third fret right ok so we're gonna
[848]
do the same thing we did on the piano if
[850]
we go up one fret then we get a G sharp
[853]
if we go back to G on the third fret and
[855]
then we go down one fret we get a G flat
[858]
and that's it that's all you have to do
[861]
so using the naturals that you started
[863]
memorizing efg a b c d e f G a B you can
[869]
find any note in the first four frets
[871]
using this method so what if we find a B
[874]
on the a string where is that second
[877]
fret right so what if we want to be flat
[880]
then we just go down a fret right okay
[882]
so we'll go back to be on 2nd fret what
[884]
if we go up from B then we're on C right
[887]
it's not be sharp because those notes
[889]
are buddied closed e to F B to C
[892]
extra-friendly
[893]
buddy closed no black keys there ok last
[895]
thing we're gonna do before we jam
[897]
together is I'm gonna test you on
[898]
finding the sharps and flats in the
[900]
money zone ok
[901]
so first find me an a on the g string
[903]
2nd fret right now what if you want an a
[906]
sharp where would you go up to the 3rd
[908]
fret right so a sharps on the 3rd fret
[910]
what if we want an A flat we go to the
[912]
first fret ok another one how about find
[915]
me an F on the D string 3rd fret right
[919]
ok now find me an F sharp where'd you go
[921]
up the fret to the 4th fret yeah ok back
[924]
to F on the 3rd fret now find me an F
[927]
flat wait there is no F flat Josh that's
[931]
right because e to F F to e be to CC to
[934]
be there are no black keys there
[936]
extra-friendly
[937]
and there buddy closed okay one more
[939]
find me a B on the a string 2nd fret and
[942]
now find me a b-flat first fret nice ok
[947]
one more one more
[947]
so find me a G sharp on the E string
[950]
we might not have g-sharp memorized at
[952]
this point but we know G right where's
[954]
the G third fret of the e-string now
[956]
what do we do to get to G sharp we just
[958]
go up a fret to the fourth fret and
[959]
that's your G sharp great you are ready
[962]
to jam let's do this so I'm gonna play
[967]
CF and G chords it's gonna sound like
[969]
this just listen for now
[970]
[Music]
[984]
even though the guitar player is playing
[987]
chords on bass we usually follow along
[989]
just by playing one note at a time so we
[991]
just need to find a C an F energy and
[994]
we'll be all set to jam with this
[995]
progression so where can we find a C in
[998]
our money zone this is one of the notes
[999]
we talked about right so if I just go
[1001]
through sequentially e f g a b c there's
[1005]
the C I found one on the third fret of
[1007]
the a string okay so I got C and now I
[1010]
need an F where's an F we just found one
[1012]
right first fret of the E string but
[1014]
there was another F and our money zone
[1016]
do you remember where that was EF g a b
[1018]
c d e f there it is third fret of the D
[1021]
string so if you're a beginner and
[1024]
you're not sure which one of these apps
[1025]
you should play just pick the lower one
[1027]
that's always the safest choice as a
[1029]
bass players pick the lower note okay so
[1031]
we've got our C on the 3rd fret of the a
[1033]
string and our F on the 1st fret of the
[1036]
E string now we need a G where can we
[1039]
find a G there are two G's in our money
[1041]
zone do you remember where both of those
[1043]
are first one is the third fret of the
[1045]
e-string but we also have the open g
[1048]
string so we got two different G's to
[1050]
pick from again because we want to play
[1053]
it safe we're gonna pick the lower
[1054]
sounding one which is the third fret of
[1056]
the E string so all together are three
[1058]
notes we got C on the third fret of the
[1061]
a string F on the first fret of the E
[1063]
string and G on the third fret of the E
[1066]
string okay let's jam so just play one
[1068]
note per bar I'll call out the chords to
[1070]
you before they change and you'll get it
[1073]
after a couple passes and I'll even join
[1074]
you on bass over in the alternate
[1076]
universe to help you get started ready
[1078]
here we go one two starting on C going
[1083]
to AB
[1085]
go into G G back to F and going back to
[1091]
the C C back to F F go to G G then am
[1101]
then same thing again
[1104]
[Music]
