what is a stakeholder this video is going to聽 look into the typical stakeholders of a business聽聽
[6]
how the business can impact these stakeholders聽 and why these stakeholders may come into conflict聽聽
[11]
with one another over certain business decisions
[24]
what is a stakeholder a stakeholder is聽 anyone that has an interest in a business聽聽
[30]
stakeholders can have an impact on a聽 business or be impacted by the business聽聽
[35]
these people can be individuals groups of聽 people or other organizations before we go聽聽
[41]
into the types of stakeholders it's important聽 to know that these stakeholders can be split聽聽
[46]
into two different types internal and external聽 stakeholders internal stakeholders are people聽聽
[54]
whose interest in a company comes through a direct聽 relationship from within the business such as聽聽
[62]
shareholders these are internal as they are part聽 owners of the business due to them holding shares聽聽
[68]
in the business it's important to distinguish the聽 difference between a stakeholder and a shareholder聽聽
[73]
a shareholder has shares in the business which聽 means they own part of the business however聽聽
[80]
because they own a part of the business they聽 are also a stakeholder as they have an interest聽聽
[85]
in the business being successful as it will聽 result in them receiving a share of the profits聽聽
[92]
employees are internal stakeholders as they聽 carry out the day-to-day activities the business聽聽
[97]
requires these tasks are usually delegated by the聽 managers managers are also internal stakeholders聽聽
[105]
as they work directly for the business and are in聽 charge of implementing the vision of the owners聽聽
[110]
in contrast to internal stakeholders external聽 stakeholders are those who do not directly work聽聽
[117]
for the company but are affected in some way聽 by the actions and outcomes of the business聽聽
[123]
examples of these are customers they buy the聽 products or service offered by the business聽聽
[129]
and therefore have an interest in the business's聽 long-term success suppliers these are external聽聽
[135]
to the business as they are an organization聽 in themselves or responsible for providing聽聽
[140]
the business with products or services the local聽 community is anyone located nearby to the business聽聽
[147]
they have an interest in how the business聽 operates in their local community聽聽
[152]
pressure groups have a shared goal and try聽 to influence the decision made by a business聽聽
[157]
in pursuit of this goal and finally government聽 this can be both local or central government聽聽
[164]
and they want businesses to provide employment聽 and pay taxes now we know the different聽聽
[170]
stakeholder groups let's look at what each聽 stakeholder wants in terms of their objectives聽聽
[176]
stakeholder objectives stakeholders have their聽 own objectives and expectations of a business聽聽
[183]
these objectives will vary by stakeholder聽 and here are some of the common objectives聽聽
[188]
for the different stakeholder groups shareholders聽 want maximum profit a long-term growth managers聽聽
[194]
want a good salary and opportunities for further聽 career progression employees want good levels of聽聽
[200]
pay job satisfaction and job security and may also聽 have an interest in career progression just like聽聽
[207]
managers customers want a good quality and range聽 of products at reasonable prices suppliers want聽聽
[214]
to receive payments on time and regular orders the聽 local community so people living within the area聽聽
[221]
may be looking for work which local business can聽 provide to them pressure groups want to increase聽聽
[228]
awareness of their cause and influence the聽 business to make decisions that further their goal聽聽
[234]
i.e animal rights groups may pressure cosmetic聽 companies to stop testing on animals government聽聽
[241]
governments want businesses to create more jobs聽 in order to raise more money from taxes and save聽聽
[247]
money on benefit payments as you can see each聽 stakeholder has their own set of expectations聽聽
[253]
for a business and depending on how the business聽 acts this will affect stakeholders in different聽聽
[259]
ways effects of business activity on stakeholders聽 each of these stakeholders is affected differently聽聽
[266]
by what direction the business takes聽 and which stakeholders they prioritize聽聽
[270]
let's look at an example at mcdonald's which has聽 been pretty popular over recent years there's no聽聽
[276]
doubt mcdonald's is a huge success in the business聽 world this has led to employees rightly or wrongly聽聽
[283]
arguing due to mcdonald's success they are聽 entitled to a higher hourly wage this has been聽聽
[289]
known as a fight for 15 as they believe this聽 wage should be 15 pounds an hour due to this聽聽
[296]
mcdonald's needs to decide which stakeholders聽 they want to prioritize as a wage increase will聽聽
[302]
not only impact the employees but will directly聽 impact all stakeholders possibly in the following聽聽
[309]
ways shareholders the effects of a wage increase聽 on shareholders would most likely be negative the聽聽
[315]
wage increase would mean a large increase in聽 costs for mcdonald's and would see wages rise聽聽
[320]
to almost double this would result in a reduction聽 in profits and a possible reduction in share price聽聽
[327]
and dividend payments to shareholders managers聽 will potentially see their salaries increase聽聽
[333]
to ensure they are incentivized to still聽 take on their additional responsibilities聽聽
[338]
if this did not happen it will be demotivating聽 as an employee with less responsibility聽聽
[344]
would receive an equal or even a higher wage聽 than managers employees this will be a positive聽聽
[352]
for the employees as they will see their wages聽 rise to 15 pounds an hour which will mean they聽聽
[357]
are better off financially it may push mcdonald's聽 towards a more automated system as we've seen with聽聽
[363]
the touchscreen ordering system as staffing聽 may need to be reduced to keep costs down
[371]
customers could see an increase in prices聽 or a reduction in quality as mcdonald's聽聽
[377]
would try to recover some losses from suppliers聽 therefore reducing quality or by raising prices聽聽
[385]
suppliers may see mcdonald's try to negotiate聽 a better price for its product or even find new聽聽
[391]
suppliers that are willing to lower their prices聽 people in the local area may now be financially聽聽
[397]
better off this means they will be able to spend聽 money in the local area and in turn could boost聽聽
[403]
the local economy pressure groups that lobbied聽 for the wage increase will be satisfied and this聽聽
[408]
will reduce the pressure on the business from such聽 activists the government will now be earning more聽聽
[414]
money annually as people repaying more income聽 tax or potentially decreasing their reliance on聽聽
[420]
financial support from the government stakeholder聽 impact ultimately their decision will come down聽聽
[427]
to which stakeholder mcdonald's deems to have聽 the greatest impact on the future growth of the聽聽
[432]
business as the action stakeholders take can also聽 have an impact on the business in the same way聽聽
[438]
in which the actions of the business can impact聽 the stakeholder what impact can the stakeholders聽聽
[444]
have on a business shareholders have a significant聽 impact as they fund the business if they dislike聽聽
[451]
what they see they could sell shares which聽 could see billions wiped off the company's value聽聽
[457]
managers make decisions at a lower level but can聽 still impact the culture and effectiveness of a聽聽
[462]
businesses day-to-day operations employees聽 have relatively low influence on a business聽聽
[468]
at an individual level however collectively聽 they can refuse to work and take strike action聽聽
[474]
customers can stop using a product or service and聽 are responsible for spreading either a positive or聽聽
[480]
negative message about a business through word聽 of mouth in person or on social media suppliers聽聽
[487]
could refuse to provide a business with the聽 goods it needs to operate local communities聽聽
[492]
and pressure groups can oppose business聽 operations and try to stop certain acts happening聽聽
[497]
that the local community and these pressure groups聽 don't agree with finally the government can pass聽聽
[503]
laws that must be followed and these can have聽 a massive impact financially and on the way the聽聽
[510]
business operates with all groups having different聽 objectives and a different level of impact this聽聽
[516]
means that when issues arise such as a wage聽 increase to 15 pounds then this puts stakeholders聽聽
[522]
in conflict with one another as each one wants聽 a different outcome from the issue stakeholder聽聽
[529]
conflicts conflicts between stakeholders will聽 occur and it's something a business must navigate聽聽
[535]
sensitively let's use the mcdonald's wage rise聽 to look at where conflict may occur on this issue聽聽
[543]
employee versus shareholders employees want 15聽 pound an hour in order for them to become more聽聽
[549]
financially stable on the other hand shareholders聽 want to make as much money from their investment聽聽
[556]
in the business as possible and ideally want聽 to pay as little as possible to employees聽聽
[561]
as this will maximize profits the two stakeholders聽 have totally conflicting interest in the business聽聽
[568]
and both objectives cannot be met at聽 the same time if mcdonald's decides to聽聽
[573]
pay the 15 pounds immediately then this will聽 increase operating costs and reduce profits聽聽
[580]
impacting shareholders negatively on the other聽 hand if mcdonald's pay their employees too low in聽聽
[587]
order to give shareholders maximum profits then聽 this could mean employees not wanting to work聽聽
[592]
for mcdonald's and taking strike action again聽 mcdonald's needs to try and strike a balance聽聽
[598]
between profits and employee wages which will聽 satisfy both the shareholder and the employees聽聽
[606]
another conflict over the issue may be between聽 employees and customers these may be in conflict聽聽
[612]
due to the employee wanting higher wages聽 but the customer wanting no price increases聽聽
[618]
these wants are conflicting as higher wages could聽 result in mcdonald's raising their prices to cover聽聽
[624]
the increased wage bill if the business聽 handles both of these conflicts well then聽聽
[629]
this will usually result in a compromise being聽 made that each stakeholder can live with such as聽聽
[635]
raising the weight of ten pound for the commitment聽 being made to increase to fifteen pounds聽聽
[640]
over a five year period this may make employees聽 feel they've been heard and shareholders would聽聽
[645]
have time to see how these changes would聽 impact profits and prices for the consumer聽聽
