Check Engine Light? System Too Lean - Code P0171 or P0174 on Your Car or Truck - YouTube
Channel: 1A Auto: Repair Tips & Secrets Only Mechanics Know
[0]
so you have a check engine light and you
[2]
scan it and you find that you have a
[4]
p0171 or p0174
[7]
which is a low fuel trim let's talk
[10]
about it
[17]
so here's some quick and easy things you
[19]
can check that could have caused that
[21]
problem or can potentially fix it
[23]
you want to find under the hood where
[24]
the air box is located
[26]
your air filter is in here and that's
[28]
gonna
[29]
that is where the engine gets the air to
[31]
breathe you need air and fuel
[34]
to make the engine run so you need to
[36]
filter that air
[38]
so off that air box you're gonna find a
[40]
snorkel that goes directly
[42]
into the engine you want to grab that
[44]
give it a shake see if anything's loose
[47]
like over here like if this is loose
[50]
that's not good
[51]
near the air filter you're going to have
[53]
something called a mass airflow sensor
[55]
now that's going to tell the computer
[57]
how much air
[58]
is getting into the engine and the
[60]
computer needs to know
[62]
so that it can dump more fuel in or less
[65]
fuel
[65]
depending on that but if you're getting
[67]
extra air coming in
[69]
through here it's not measuring that
[71]
fuel going in
[72]
so that's going to give you a code so
[75]
you could have replaced the air filter
[76]
or someone could have replaced the air
[78]
filter for you and just forgot to
[80]
tighten this
[80]
up it happens all the time anything
[83]
loose like that you just tighten it up
[85]
should be able to clear the code and
[86]
you'll be on your way so on a different
[88]
vehicle
[88]
the air box is right here where the air
[90]
filter is there's the wires
[92]
and if you follow the snorkel there's
[95]
actually a hose that's supposed to be
[96]
right there
[97]
if that was left off that's going to
[99]
cause that code or even
[101]
if you check and see it's disconnected
[103]
right there that needs to be hooked up
[107]
hook that up and clear the code so again
[110]
this is a different vehicle
[112]
air box right there nas airflow
[116]
sensor right there and just check the
[118]
tubes you know you also want to check
[120]
any of this rubber there could be a
[122]
crack in there
[124]
and that could cause it as well
[125]
sometimes these have to be replaced
[127]
but definitely check the hose underneath
[130]
here
[131]
you may have to lift an engine cover up
[134]
take a look just make sure everything's
[136]
connected
[138]
all right so now let's get underneath
[140]
the engine cover if
[142]
many vehicles have little covers over
[144]
the engine
[145]
and all you have to do is lift them up
[148]
some of them may have a screw in them
[150]
so you want to look at the hoses that
[152]
are connected to the
[154]
intake anything and just make sure
[156]
nothing's disconnected
[158]
everything's attached you know if you
[160]
had some engine work done
[161]
recently and there's a hose that's not
[163]
connected
[164]
now you want to check any ports if any
[166]
ports seem like they're open
[169]
make sure that it's not something that's
[171]
plugged off because
[173]
that's not going to cause an issue but
[175]
something like this where
[177]
it's open should have a hose on it or
[179]
something or even a plug covering it
[182]
so if you don't see anything visual what
[184]
you can do is start the engine up
[186]
and stay away from any of the moving
[188]
components and try to listen for a
[190]
whistle type noise or
[191]
air rushing and then just try to feel
[193]
around
[194]
see if you can plug something off if any
[197]
of the pitches
[198]
change if you plug off one of these
[201]
holes
[201]
and it changes then that can help you
[204]
find the leak
[205]
and also any of these lines if there was
[207]
a pinhole in the line
[209]
you may be able to find it that way as
[211]
well let's take a quick look at the air
[213]
filter
[213]
your air box may have clips or screws
[216]
holding
[217]
the air box down just take the air
[220]
filter out
[220]
take a look at it this one's pretty
[222]
dirty now that's not going to cause the
[224]
code
[224]
but if you had a hole in here where some
[227]
debris can get
[229]
past the air filter itself that's
[231]
important that you change that
[233]
and while you have the air filter out
[235]
you can see the mass airflow sensor
[237]
now i've seen in the past where you'll
[239]
have a leaf actually get by the air
[241]
filter
[242]
and it's in front of the mass airflow
[244]
sensor and that can cause some issues
[246]
or any type of debris it could get dirty
[249]
and that could cause this code
[251]
so not a very common problem but it
[254]
could potentially be the mass
[255]
airflow sensor if it's dirty or sending
[258]
a bad signal to the vehicle's computer
[260]
and giving you that faulty code so those
[263]
are some of the quick and easy simple
[265]
things you can check out let's get a
[267]
little more advanced
[268]
so everything after the mass airflow
[270]
sensor
[271]
into the engine block itself has to be
[273]
sealed and all the hoses
[276]
connected well you could also have you
[278]
have your intake plenum right here
[281]
you actually have gaskets in between the
[283]
plenum and the heads themselves
[285]
now those gaskets could leak they could
[287]
be broken they could be cracked
[290]
and if those leak you're definitely
[292]
going to get a
[293]
low fuel trim code now we have a bunch
[296]
of videos on how to replace intake
[297]
gaskets every vehicle is a little bit
[299]
different you can check those out
[301]
try to attempt that yourself it's that
[303]
if that's a little more advanced you can
[304]
take it to a professional
[306]
so you may notice the engine runs very
[309]
rough and there
[310]
could be a large leak and something like
[314]
if there's a
[315]
bad seal on the purge valve or something
[318]
you can hear that leaking right now
[321]
just like that but you may notice the
[325]
engine stumbling
[326]
running really rough another thing we
[329]
can do is take some carburetor cleaner
[331]
or throttle body cleaner and you can
[333]
take it while the engine is running
[335]
and you can actually feel the engine
[337]
running rough and
[338]
as you spray it all along the areas that
[341]
you think you might have a leak
[342]
at the intake you can notice the engine
[345]
either run smoother or
[347]
rougher or even have someone watching
[349]
the gauges
[350]
and watch the gauges fluctuate as you're
[353]
spraying and that's a good indication to
[354]
find where the actual leak is
[356]
so what we can do is if we take the scan
[359]
tool
[359]
or the code reader and we can find
[362]
select engine speed confirm
[366]
now while you're monitoring the engine
[368]
speed
[369]
if you have the ability to graph the
[372]
engine speed
[372]
so and then we're going to take some
[374]
carburetor cleaner now remember this is
[376]
flammable you don't want to spray this
[378]
near the alternator or anything
[379]
electrical you don't want to spray it
[381]
near the coils or anything
[382]
but if you spray it just on the intake
[385]
gasket itself or where you think you may
[387]
have a leak
[388]
like if you sprayed it in that area down
[390]
there
[391]
where we have our leak right here as
[393]
you're monitoring the
[395]
engine speed
[400]
so we notice the drop in revolutions per
[403]
minute
[404]
the engine speed that's where our leaks
[406]
going to be
[412]
the engine's running rough
[415]
now you may see it actually go the other
[418]
way you may see the engine speed go up
[421]
as long as you see a difference that's
[422]
probably where your leak is
[424]
everything we've talked about so far has
[426]
to do with the engine getting
[427]
air and everything being sealed up in
[430]
the intake system so
[431]
everything after the mass air flow
[433]
sensor has to be sealed
[435]
up to the engine now there could be two
[437]
additional
[438]
problems that could cause this code you
[440]
could have a fuel injector
[442]
issue or an o2 sensor issue so your fuel
[445]
injectors are
[445]
located right here and they're attached
[448]
to a fuel rail
[449]
and there needs to be a certain amount
[450]
of pressure in this fuel reel
[452]
so if that pressure is not high enough
[454]
you're not going to get enough fuel
[456]
and that's your air fuel mixture is not
[459]
going to be correct
[460]
that could cause that code so if there's
[463]
not enough pressure there
[464]
or if the fuel injector itself
[467]
is plugged up it's not letting enough of
[469]
that fuel get
[471]
into the engine same deal so the
[473]
engine's not seeing enough fuel in that
[475]
situation and it's trying to add more
[477]
fuel
[478]
and it's unable to do so that's going to
[480]
set that code
[481]
related to the fuel pressure being low
[483]
you could have a bad fuel pump
[485]
not putting enough pressure there or
[487]
even a fuel filter that's partially
[489]
plugged up
[489]
not getting enough fuel there or the
[492]
oxygen sensors
[493]
now there's four oxygen sensors on this
[496]
vehicle
[497]
there's two in the front and there's two
[499]
that are further down the exhaust
[501]
the ones in the front are the ones that
[503]
we're concerned with those are the ones
[505]
that are going to
[505]
monitor the engine's fuel air ratio
[509]
so any unburned fuel or air gets into
[513]
the exhaust and that o2 sensor
[515]
will monitor that and send the signal to
[517]
the computer
[518]
and make adjustments well if this o2
[521]
sensor isn't sending the correct signal
[523]
to the computer
[524]
that's going to cause an issue i hope
