What is Klarna? How Klarna became a Fintech Unicorn - YouTube

Channel: How It Happened

[1]
In the 21st century, as technology has improved聽 the way we live our lives and made things more聽聽efficient
[6]
we as humans have become more obsessed聽 with buying things. Retail therapy makes us happy聽聽
[12]
and takes our minds off the stresses of everyday聽 life and work but sometimes shopping can be聽聽
[16]
painful, especially online when the payment process聽 is clunky and time-consuming or your clothes just聽聽
[22]
don't fit and you need to send them back, sometimes聽 having to wait weeks for the refund.
[26]
well Klarna the company that was first thought up in a聽 Burger King and came last in an entrepreneurship聽聽
[31]
competition 15 years ago is now one of Sweden's聽 greatest exports, being labelled in the top five聽聽
[37]
unicorn businesses from the region. Forty percent聽 of all online shopping in Sweden now runs through聽聽
[42]
Klarna and in 2019 alone the company handled聽 over 35 billion dollars in sales worldwide.
[48]
Whilst many online shoppers would have seen their聽 tagline of 'Buy Now, Pay Later', not many know the聽聽
[53]
history of Klarna, how it was founded and how聽 it's now worth in excess of five billion dollars.
[60]
Here's how it happened
[62]
Back in the day, two of the聽three Klarna founders first met in Burger King but not over lunch
[68]
because they were working in the聽 kitchen flipping burgers.
[73]
Sebastian Siemiatkowski and Niklas Adalberth then studied at Stockholm聽School of Economics, where they met Victor Jacobsson聽聽
[79]
the third founder. After taking a sabbatical,聽 the trio launched Klarna in 2005 initially聽聽
[85]
with the name Kreditor and took part in the聽 annual entrepreneurship award that same year,
[90]
pitching their vision of helping buyers and聽 sellers with safer and smoother payment methods online
[95]
but their passion was to no avail as聽 they finished all but last in the competition.
[100]
They were told to "forget about it, it's never going聽 to work", but despite the negativity the trio were聽聽
[105]
inspired to continue although none of them had any聽 finance or banking experience. But what they lacked聽聽
[111]
in experience they made up for in looks, savvy tactics聽 and energy. The trio printed their business cards聽聽
[117]
on expensive card; they always wore suits; and they聽 obtained phone numbers that ended in lots of zeros聽聽
[123]
similar to a switchboard to convince聽 prospective investors that there was a large聽聽
[128]
team behind them. In hindsight, they realized聽 that it wasn't their looks that raised capital聽聽
[133]
but their passion and belief in聽 Klarna and the problems it could solve.
[137]
Klarna was invented to provide financing for聽 online shopping and therefore using Klarna聽聽
[142]
as a buyer, you know that the shop you're聽 buying from has passed Klarna's checks聽聽
[147]
and that Klarna is taking on the payment risk so聽 that you can essentially try before you buy and be聽聽
[152]
able to return your clothes with no fuss thanks to the intermediator and they make the whole process聽聽
[157]
smooth. That was key as often payment is clunky聽 and takes time, but with Klarna they remembered聽聽
[162]
the buyer from previous purchases making聽 the whole process easy. They even centered an聽聽
[167]
advertising campaign around it with one of their聽 key investors Snoop Dogg labeling him Smooth Dogg.
[176]
The retailer also sees some perks too as聽 they're not taking on any risk when it comes聽聽
[181]
to receiving money as Klarna pay up front and聽 take responsibility themselves for collecting聽聽
[186]
payment from the buyer. Shops also see an聽 increase in goods sold when customers are聽聽
[191]
using Klarna's suite of options, whether it be聽 installments, financing or pay in 30 days, it lets聽聽
[197]
consumers try before they buy with Klarna taking聽 the financial risk. Allowing customers to buy on聽聽
[203]
credit or pay later entices them to just make the聽 purchase without having to think too hard about聽聽
[208]
it and falling in love with the products makes聽 it a lot easier to part with their cash.聽聽
[213]
Klarna have now partnered with numerous brands like Asos, Farfetch, Nike, Adidas, Abercrombie & Fitch and H&M,
[221]
to name a few and is servicing over 80 million聽 customers, growing into one of Europe's largest聽聽
[227]
banks without anyone really noticing. Along with聽 Spotify, Mojang, Skype and King the app game maker聽聽
[235]
Klarna is now in the top five as far as Sweden's聽 unicorn businesses are concerned and they've聽聽
[240]
solved the problem of unnecessary friction and聽 complexity in the retail world, allowing people to聽聽
[245]
focus on what they came to do in the first place: shopping. But with all success comes criticism and聽聽
[253]
the story with Klarna is no different with some聽 suggesting they're just a modern loan shark with聽聽
[258]
branding which is encouraging young people to聽 overspend, spending money that they haven't got聽聽
[263]
and creating mounting debt. The Klarna response is聽 that the banking industry has never been friendly聽聽
[269]
and they're hoping to change that by making聽 the risks associated with borrowing money
[273]
as clear as possible and doing soft credit checks, blocking those that are overspending.
[279]
This might seem frustrating in the short term when payments聽 are declined but in the long run protects them聽financially.
[285]
With one new seller joining Klarna聽 every eight minutes, it's now competing with聽聽
[290]
some massive names like PayPal and their credit聽 business as Klarna looks to continue its rapid聽聽
[295]
growth, the firm will be launching a Klarna card聽 using their banking license in a bid to continue聽聽
[301]
making the shopping experience the best in class聽 whilst also providing greater services including聽聽
[306]
returns, parcel tracking and personal finance on聽 the app. What does the future hold? Well there's聽聽
[313]
rumors that the bank will grow to finance clothing聽 resales, as Siemiatkowski is known for investing in聽聽
[318]
Depop the peer-to-peer social shopping app, perhaps聽 to offset the criticism that Klarna makes fast聽聽
[324]
fashion more obtainable. But Siemiatkowski is keen聽 to understand how fashion recycling will change聽聽
[329]
the fashion industry with Klarna potentially聽 looking into the clothing rental market too.
[336]
What's clear though, is that in today's聽 society switching to another product is so聽聽
[340]
easy and therefore competition to be the best聽 is greater than ever and Klarna's vision is to be聽聽
[346]
a consumer-oriented product-driven and聽 technology-intensive retail bank which聽聽
[350]
truly puts the customer first and will聽 potentially see Klarna become one of the聽聽
[354]
most valuable businesses in the world. And that's how it happened.
[360]
Thanks for watching.
