$100 vs $900 Impact Wrench TORTURE TEST - YouTube
Channel: Donut Media
[0]
(engine revs)
[0]
(tires squeal)
[1]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[2]
- I think this thing's
about to catch on fire.
[4]
(wrench whines)
[6]
- We're testing impact wrenches today,
[8]
$120 Harbor Freight vs. $370 Milwaukee.
[13]
- Vs. $800 Snap-on electric impact wrench.
[16]
Do you really have to
spend a bunch of money
[17]
to get the right tool for the job?
[19]
- Do you?
[20]
- I don't know, Jerry let's find out.
[22]
(upbeat music)
[25]
- Today we're going to be testing
[26]
three different impact wrenches
[28]
at three different price points
[29]
to figure out which one is
the best bang for your buck.
[32]
So Zach, why would you
even want an impact wrench
[34]
in the first place?
[35]
Well, if you're going to
be working on your car,
[36]
especially working on it a lot,
[38]
you're going to have to bust
some nuts along the way.
[40]
Now, sure, you can just use
an old fashioned hand ratchet
[43]
and your big old muscles.
[44]
But, come on, power tools,
[46]
that's way cooler, and
it makes it way easier.
[47]
And it'll save you some
knuckle skin along the way.
[50]
3/8s impact wrenches
are relatively compact,
[52]
but they can bust relatively tight nuts.
[55]
And these guns boast some
pretty high torque figures.
[58]
So, let's take a look at
our actual contestants here
[61]
and see what we chose.
[62]
(hip hop music)
[63]
- Our bottom tier impact wrench,
[65]
we have the Bauer from Harbor Freight.
[68]
Is a 20 volt, 325 ft-lbs
of breakaway torque.
[73]
- [Zach] Wow.
[74]
And the middle category
we've got the Milwaukee M18,
[78]
18 volt, 250 ft-lbs of breakaway torque.
[82]
- [Jeremiah] Oh, okay. Less.
[83]
- [Zach] Little bit less. Interesting.
[84]
And then in the super high price category,
[87]
we've got the Snap-on.
[88]
After taxes, this thing was $926.
[91]
- [Jeremiah] Whoo!
[92]
- [Zach] And it boasts 240
ft-lbs of breakaway torque.
[96]
(piano music)
[97]
- [Jeremiah] Interesting.
[98]
- [Zach] Quite.
[99]
Honestly, for the wild price
differences we have here,
[101]
they don't seem that much
different in the hand.
[103]
- I kind of want to know
how they work better.
[105]
- You wanna take one apart with me?
[107]
- Yeah, let's take one apart.
[108]
Let's use one to take apart the other.
[110]
- That's a great idea.
[111]
(gentle music)
[113]
(wrench hums)
[115]
Step one.
Bit mad.
[116]
- [Jeremiah] Just use your hands.
[117]
- [Zach] What are you doing?
[117]
- All right. There's the snouts.
[119]
- So what do we got going
on under that snout, man?
[121]
- Okay, so we got couple
of things going on here.
[123]
This is made out of three parts here.
[124]
- Mm hm.
[125]
- We have right here our anvil.
[126]
This is our hammer.
[128]
And then our little spring.
[129]
As this all rotates, once
it senses a load on it,
[133]
this assembly drops.
[134]
- [Zach] Compresses that
spring and snaps over.
[137]
- And then it smacks it.
[138]
- [Zach] Thwacks into the hammer.
[139]
- And that's the impact part-
[141]
- [Zach] Yeah.
[142]
- Of and impact wrench.
[143]
- [Zach] When you're using a
regular old school ratchet,
[144]
you know, you smack it a few
times to break a nut loose.
[146]
- Yep.
[147]
- [Zach] That's basically this part.
[148]
But this thing can do it
like 50 times a second-
[150]
- [Jeremiah] Yep.
[151]
- With just the pull of the
trigger, so that's pretty cool.
[153]
Let's take the Snap-on apart.
[154]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[155]
- [Jeremiah] You know, we have
a third gun in there, right?
[157]
- [Zach] I know.
[158]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[159]
- [Jeremiah] Whoa.
[160]
- Whoa.
[160]
So looking at these, like
this is a lot thicker here.
[163]
And everything's definitely
slightly beefier.
[164]
But honestly, I don't see
a $700 price difference.
[167]
- Not yet. Looks are only
one part of the equation.
[170]
- And they can be deceiving.
[171]
- Yes.
[172]
So why don't we get to the deceiving part
[174]
and put them to the test?
[175]
- [Zach] So, we're going
to be testing these things
[177]
in a few different categories.
[178]
First, we're going to test
their power abilities.
[181]
Then we're going to test
their battery abilities.
[183]
And then we're going to test
their durability ability.
[187]
I'm going to be surprised
if any of them survive.
[189]
(upbeat music)
[192]
- So one of the most common places
[193]
you're going to be using
one of these impact wrenches
[196]
is for your lugs on your tires.
[197]
So Jobe, you've tightened these, right?
[199]
- That's correct. 90 ft-lbs.
[200]
- And we're gonna see how long it takes me
[202]
to break it just with a standard tire iron
[204]
and compare that against these power tools
[206]
also checking to see if
there're any difference
[208]
between these three.
[209]
- Are you ready?
- Ready.
[210]
- Three, two, one, go!
[212]
(fast-paced music)
[213]
Dang.
[214]
(metal clatters)
[215]
All right.
[217]
I missed by a tenth of a second.
[219]
We'll go 5.3 seconds.
[221]
Not too bad, Jared,
[222]
but I think we're going to
be able to improve on that.
[223]
- First one we're going
to test: Harbor Freight.
[226]
- Ready?
[226]
- Ready.
[227]
- Three, two, one.
[228]
(wrench rattles)
[230]
Wow.
[231]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[232]
1.44 seconds.
[233]
- And you were a little slow on that too.
[235]
- I am slow.
[239]
- Okay. Next we have our mid
tier, the old Milwaukee M18.
[242]
- Three, two, one.
[243]
(wrench rattles)
[245]
1.32.
[246]
- Okay.
[247]
- And I was pretty on it there.
[248]
- You were on it on that for sure.
[249]
So now we have our top tier,
Snap-on, 900 plus bones.
[254]
Here we go.
- Are we ready?
[254]
Three, two, one.
[255]
(wrench rattles)
[258]
(nut clatters)
[259]
Wow. 2.66.
[261]
Okay.
[262]
Well, they all managed
to get the lug nuts off
[265]
with some surprising
results in terms of time.
[267]
Onto the next test.
[268]
- Let's go.
[269]
(funk music)
[270]
For the second part of this test
[271]
we wanted to find the highest
amount of raw breakaway power
[275]
these guns are capable
of, time not withstanding.
[278]
So we fastened a series of
bolts to our welding table
[280]
and torqued them down
starting at 150 pound feet
[283]
and increasing in 25
pound feet increments.
[286]
The gun that breaks
the tightest bolt wins.
[288]
Now, if the factory ratings
are anything to go by,
[290]
the Harbor Freight Bauer
should make it out of this test
[293]
on top.
[294]
Although, I'd be surprised
if that's what we see.
[297]
- Any predictions?
[298]
- This little bad boy has been
just ripping and gripping.
[300]
So I'm going to say it goes
all the way up into 250.
[303]
I'm going to say it.
[304]
- All right.
[305]
I'm gonna go, actually, with the Snap-On.
[305]
I think this might have
the most breakaway power.
[308]
It's got that beefy hammer in there.
[310]
I'm hoping this is where
it shows its value.
[312]
- Okay. Let's start off
with our old Harbor Freight.
[314]
Shall we?
[315]
Okay, here we go.
[316]
Three, two, one.
[317]
(wrench rattles)
[318]
(graphic dings)
[322]
- Wow.
[325]
- Nothing?
[328]
- Is not moving my hand, but.
[329]
- Yeah, if it's not moving your hand,
[330]
it ain't moving this.
[331]
- 275's it, huh?
[332]
- Yep, 275.
[334]
Let's see what Milwaukee can do.
[336]
(wrench rattles)
[336]
(graphic dings)
[340]
She can't do it, Jobe.
[341]
- [Zach] No way!
[342]
It started to, I thought.
[344]
- Let's try.
[345]
(wrench rattles)
[347]
Oh.
[348]
(graphic dings)
[349]
- [Zach] You gotta have faith!
[349]
(wrench rattles)
[350]
(graphic dings)
[352]
- Not even moving her.
[354]
(wrench rattles)
[355]
Can't do it.
[356]
275, we're at a draw so far.
[357]
- Yeah, but, you know
when you think about it,
[359]
that beats it's listed nut bust ability.
[362]
Take a bow, Milwaukee.
[363]
- All right. Last round.
[364]
Mr. Snap-on, the big daddy dollars.
[366]
- Man, if we could break
through 300, that would be big.
[369]
- Yeah.
[370]
- But I don't know if I think it's gonna.
[371]
I'm gonna say no.
[372]
- Ready.
[373]
(wrench rattles)
[374]
(graphic dings)
[380]
It can't do it.
[381]
- She doesn't have it in her.
[383]
Everybody had 275. They're
all in the same ballpark.
[386]
- You would think if you're going to spend
[387]
800, 900 plus bucks,
[389]
it would give you a little
bit more performance.
[391]
But as we can see here, same, same.
[392]
- But, also, it met its claimed
rating, and exceeded it.
[396]
So these two met their rating.
[398]
This one did not,
[399]
even though they all broke
the same tightness loose
[402]
at 275 ft-lbs.
[403]
I mean, I don't know why
they're trying to claim
[405]
such high numbers.
[406]
275 would sound fine if they said that.
[409]
- Regardless...
[410]
- But, the fact is it
played with the big boys.
[411]
- Yeah.
[412]
- And that's saying something.
[413]
So, currently for me,
[414]
I'm gonna say Milwaukee's in the lead.
[416]
(funk music)
[421]
All right, so for our battery test,
[423]
here's what we've got,
[425]
some wood and a bunch of
different size lag bolts
[428]
ranging from kind of
big to ridiculously big.
[432]
So, what we're going to do here
[433]
is drive these lag bolts down
[435]
with each of the different
guns with a fresh battery
[438]
and see who drives the most lag bolt.
[441]
(drum rolls)
[442]
She's gonna be loud.
[443]
(funk music)
[444]
(wrench hums)
[452]
Oh, that's smoking.
[453]
(both laugh)
[454]
We still got two thirds of a battery,
[455]
but that seems to be as about as deep
[457]
as it wants to take those.
[458]
(wrench rattles)
[461]
I think this thing's
about to catch on fire.
[465]
(wrench rattles)
[467]
Oh, that's a lot of smoke.
[469]
- This isn't even the torture test.
[471]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[472]
(wrench rattles)
[474]
- I think she chooched her last chooch.
[476]
Still says I got two thirds of a battery.
[478]
- I think it probably shuts
down due to temperature.
[480]
- Oh yeah.
[481]
Hopefully it is just that
[482]
and it's not permanently shut down.
[486]
Shoot.
[487]
- That's pretty hot. That's a oven, man.
[489]
We're baking.
[490]
Let's put our midway
Milwaukee to the test.
[492]
Let's see what it can do.
[493]
- I'm hoping it just doesn't melt.
[495]
- Let's do it.
[496]
(funk music)
[497]
(wrench whines)
[509]
(wrench rattles)
[509]
- You've been on one bar of battery life
[512]
for like four of these bolts.
[514]
I can't believe what I'm witnessing.
[516]
(wrench whines)
[518]
(wrench rattles)
[519]
That's as far as she's going down,
[521]
but we've still got battery left.
[522]
So why don't you start taking them out
[524]
and see when this thing dies.
[525]
(funk music)
[527]
(wrench hums)
[531]
(wrench rattles)
[534]
- There we did it.
[535]
- Did it die?
[536]
- It died.
[537]
- Finally!
[537]
We didn't smoke it.
[538]
- Just drained the battery.
[540]
And that was a lot of work.
[541]
- I'd like to see if Snap-on can beat it.
[543]
- Is the price going to be
able to match the performance?
[546]
- I kinda don't think so.
[547]
There's only one way to find out, Gerald.
[550]
(funk music)
[555]
(wrench rattles)
[556]
Three battery bars left.
[561]
Two battery bars.
[573]
(wrench rattles)
[576]
What's the cause, Doc?
[578]
Battery death!
[579]
- Let me measure this temperature.
[581]
It got up to 323 on the tip.
[582]
- Shoot, that's hot.
[584]
And we didn't even make it to the big dog.
[586]
I gotta call this a pretty clear winner.
[587]
- Yeah. That's an easy win for the big M.
[591]
(electronic music)
[592]
(graphic dings)
[594]
(buzzer beeps)
[596]
And this wouldn't be a Donut video
[597]
if we didn't push these
things to the absolute limit,
[600]
to the point of failure.
[601]
95% of the time
[602]
your gonna be taking real
good care of these things.
[604]
But 5% of the time you're
gonna be using them
[606]
in a way that they weren't
intended, or just dropping it.
[608]
- Welcome to the drop test.
[609]
Jerry, drop that Harbor
Freight tool on the ground.
[612]
(wrench thumps)
[615]
(glass shatters)
[618]
- Ugh.
[619]
- It's okay.
[620]
- It looks like it did all right.
[621]
(wrench thumps)
[623]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[623]
Oh.
[624]
- Up next, Milwaukee.
[626]
(wrench thumps)
[628]
Snap-on.
[629]
(wrench thumps)
[631]
Let me see a kickflip,
can you get it to do a...
[633]
(wrench thumps)
[634]
Kickflip!
[635]
(wrench whines)
[635]
- Still working.
[637]
(wrench hums)
[638]
Still working.
[639]
(wrench whines)
[640]
All right. Pretty cool, they work.
[641]
What about, like, I don't know,
you're working on your car,
[643]
you forget a tool and
then you run it over!
[646]
- I do that all the time.
[648]
Yeah, Jerry!
[651]
(tires squeal)
[654]
(Zach laughs)
[656]
Back her up.
[658]
(wrench hums)
[659]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[661]
No big deal. Pretty impressive.
[663]
You also might sometimes
leave your tools outside
[666]
where it rains.
- Yeah.
[667]
- Here goes the Bauer.
[668]
(wrench whines)
[671]
(water splashes)
[673]
Sometimes all it takes
is a heavy rain. Okay.
[676]
See how the Milwaukee does.
[678]
(wrench whines)
[682]
Ejecto watero!
[684]
- Yeah, this is the way to clean it
[685]
when you get a little mud on it.
[686]
- Yeah.
[687]
No big deal for the Milwaukee.
[689]
- Snap-on
[690]
(wrench hums)
[693]
(water splashes)
[694]
Oh.
(Jeremiah laughs)
[695]
- I heard it.
[696]
- Locked up. She's a goner.
[698]
- All right, so we've killed two.
[700]
- Yeah, well we still
got the old Milwaukee.
[702]
(wrench whines)
[703]
- All right, so the Milwaukee
[704]
has handily outlasted its competitors.
[707]
So now it's time to
test the age old problem
[709]
of what happens when you
drop your tool in a pond
[711]
real quick.
[713]
(wrench hums)
[715]
(water splashes)
[719]
(upbeat music)
[721]
- Oh!
[722]
(wrench hums)
[724]
Give her a second clean out.
[726]
(water splashes)
[727]
Yeah!
[729]
(wrench whines)
[730]
(water splashes)
[734]
- This thing doesn't seem to
give a (beep) about anything.
[736]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[737]
It just keeps on going, Oh my God.
[739]
Jerry, I think we've got a winner.
[741]
- If you weren't convinced
of what was the winner
[743]
by the previous test, I hope
that this does it for you.
[746]
- I thought that was a
guaranteed death sentence.
[748]
- Dude, I am soaked and happy about it.
[750]
(Jeremiah laughs)
[753]
(graphic dings)
[756]
(crowd cheers)
[759]
- Well, Jer, we did it.
[760]
We set out to test a few tools
[762]
in a few different categories,
[763]
and by golly, we did.
[765]
- And that's what this is all about,
[766]
trying to find the best
tool for the money.
[768]
And this one takes the cake.
[769]
- I think that all of these tools,
[771]
if you use them normally,
[772]
it would probably last a lot longer
[774]
than these did here today.
[776]
And, you know, as we
saw in the power test,
[778]
they're all pretty similar in that sense.
[779]
- Thank you guys so much
for watching the tool party.
[781]
If there are other types of
tools you want to see us review,
[784]
you want to see us dunk
