Vice President Harris Meets with Private Sector Leaders to Discuss Economic Development - YouTube

Channel: The White House

[0]
well i want to thank this distinguished
[2]
group
[3]
of leaders for joining us this afternoon
[5]
for this discussion
[6]
um we promise it to be a very productive
[10]
discussion
[11]
about how we can collaborate how we can
[13]
maximize
[14]
opportunities and promise and hope and
[16]
potential
[17]
and resources and as you all know on
[21]
march
[21]
24th the president asked me to lead our
[24]
nation's diplomatic efforts
[26]
as it relates to the northern triangle
[28]
in mexico and
[30]
as i've said many times over the past
[32]
two months
[34]
the work that we are doing is guided by
[36]
two fundamental principles
[38]
one that most people don't want to leave
[41]
home
[43]
they don't want to leave their
[44]
grandmother they don't want to leave the
[46]
language they speak the culture they
[48]
know
[49]
and when they do it is often for one of
[52]
two reasons
[53]
because they are either fleeing some
[55]
harm
[56]
or because to stay home
[60]
prevents them from satisfying basic
[62]
needs for themselves or their family
[66]
the second principle with which we are
[68]
approaching this initiative
[70]
is the the real belief that
[73]
we have the capacity to give people hope
[78]
and and hope in particular in this case
[81]
that if they stay
[83]
that help is on the way and so
[86]
these are the guiding principles for our
[88]
work
[89]
and in that vein we also
[92]
really fully appreciate that in order
[94]
for us
[96]
as an administration as the united
[97]
states government to really maximize
[100]
the potential of our work it has to be
[102]
through collaboration and partnership
[105]
through public-private partnerships
[108]
through the work that we are doing with
[109]
also reaching out to non-profits and
[111]
foundations the work we are doing to
[113]
internationalize this effort
[115]
predominantly through the work that we
[117]
do with our allies in the un
[120]
doing the work of engaging civil society
[123]
doing the work of understanding that the
[126]
benefit
[127]
of this effort will probably not
[129]
evidence itself overnight
[132]
but will be well worth it but we do
[134]
understand our work is in the context of
[136]
long-standing issues
[138]
that are both about acute factors
[142]
and and are about long-standing and deep
[144]
rooted factors
[145]
that include issues of violence and
[147]
corruption
[149]
that include issues of food insecurity
[151]
that include the impact that everyone
[153]
around the world has experienced in
[154]
terms
[155]
of extreme weather conditions and so
[159]
the work we are doing is guided though
[161]
with a dominant principle that when we
[163]
work together
[165]
when we combine resources limited though
[167]
they are for each one of us
[169]
we can maximize the potential to give
[171]
people in that region hope
[173]
and and in that way also show what it
[175]
means to be
[176]
a good neighbor because this is also in
[179]
the context of the western hemisphere
[182]
and in that way we know that we are
[184]
interconnected
[186]
and in many ways interdependent when it
[188]
comes to many issues
[190]
so today we are launching
[193]
our call to action for businesses to
[196]
invest in the northern triangle
[198]
and that is one of the specific reasons
[200]
that i've asked these business leaders
[201]
to join us today
[203]
and so this focus includes digital
[205]
inclusion
[206]
everything from digital inclusion to
[208]
workforce development
[210]
i believe that the businesses in
[212]
particular our private business sector
[214]
have a very significant role to play as
[217]
we all know
[218]
in creating jobs and promoting economic
[220]
opportunity
[221]
and in long-term development i am proud
[224]
that
[224]
we have companies already in the united
[226]
states who have committed to act we have
[229]
mastercard who intends to partner
[232]
across sectors to bring five million
[234]
people in the region
[235]
into the digital economy and to support
[237]
one million small businesses this is a
[240]
commitment that's already been made
[242]
i'm excited to report that microsoft
[245]
will work with local partners to expand
[247]
broadband access
[248]
for up to 3 million people in the region
[250]
in the next year
[252]
i'm pleased to report that that
[254]
nespresso will expand coffee sourcing
[257]
activities in guatemala and start in
[259]
honduras and el salvador supporting
[261]
local communities and farming
[263]
communities
[264]
with a minimum of 150 million dollars
[268]
in purchases in price premiums and
[270]
technical assistance
[272]
so these are but a few examples of the
[274]
commitments that have already been made
[276]
but the call to action is to bring these
[279]
leaders
[280]
and others together so that we can do
[282]
what i think we do
[284]
best which is make a commitment to get
[286]
something done and then see it through
[288]
understanding that giving hope is not
[291]
about just having a dream of giving hope
[294]
it is about action that results in
[296]
tangible benefit
[298]
that gives people a sense of what is
[300]
possible for themselves and for their
[302]
families
[303]
so with that um again i i welcome you
[306]
all i thank you for this time and i'm
[307]
very much looking forward to our
[308]
discussion today
[310]
so we should begin and i will say adds
[312]
you to the to the
[313]
folks who are here thank you all
