[0]
out to destroy this man they have been
[1]
from day one and that will and Ally
[3]
again to get accomplished this you know
[8]
if it wasn't your show Shawn they would
[10]
destroy him
[11]
absolutely you're the difference between
[14]
Donald J Trump and Richard Nixon it's
[18]
becoming increasingly clear as the
[20]
impeachment inquiry continues that Fox
[21]
News is playing a major role in the
[24]
president's defense as greg sargent lays
[26]
out in The Washington Post quote
[27]
rank-and-file Republicans who watch Fox
[30]
News are far more loyal to trump than
[33]
those who do not a recent poll from the
[36]
Public Religion Research Institute finds
[38]
that of Republicans who cite Fox News as
[41]
their primary news source
[43]
a whopping 98 percent oppose impeaching
[47]
and removing Trump compared to just 90
[49]
percent of non Fox citing Republicans
[52]
and 55 percent of primarily Fox watching
[54]
Republicans say there is almost nothing
[57]
the president could do to lose their
[59]
approval while only 29% of non Fox
[62]
citing Republicans feel the same way of
[64]
course Fox News makes no secret of where
[66]
its loyalties lie and listen to this
[68]
exchange from Fox and Friends from this
[70]
morning
[72]
Lindsey Graham was going to be over the
[74]
White House today I think says this
[76]
what's missing in the impeachment push
[78]
is a coordinated effort to put somebody
[80]
in charge of developing a message in
[82]
delivering it I think that has to be
[84]
corrected you're doing the best you can
[87]
Hogan and others do the best you can but
[89]
could you use some help you know I think
[92]
we could use some help from the
[93]
Democrats and if we could see what it is
[96]
we're trying to fight we would be able
[97]
to message it a little better it's hard
[99]
to message anything that's going on
[101]
behind closed doors and in secret okay
[104]
so as we discussed it's not actually
[106]
happening in secret joining me now is
[108]
someone who watches all of this very
[109]
closely angela Carson is the president
[111]
and CEO of Media Matters angel' it's not
[113]
going on in secret I just I think we
[114]
have to correct that every time it
[115]
happens it's a closed-door hearing
[117]
exactly the same kind that the
[118]
Republicans had on Benghazi yep with
[121]
Republicans in the room alongside
[122]
Democrats that's right thank you for
[124]
doing that no secret about it's not
[125]
secret at all however Fox should be able
[130]
to clarify that as well but you heard
[132]
the Fox anchors saying that to the
[134]
president's press secretary so that's
[135]
right they are reinforcing the stuff the
[138]
White House is putting out there
[138]
absolutely and they're also creating the
[140]
larger conditions and I think some of
[142]
that was referenced in that piece where
[143]
50 percent say there's nothing he can do
[145]
if you take that one step deeper what
[147]
they're really saying is that the ends
[149]
justify the means right so you make the
[151]
process illegitimate so that no matter
[153]
what happens there can't really be any
[155]
consequences for it and it's important
[157]
to keep in mind that this is the
[158]
actually the reason why Fox News was
[160]
built I mean when Roger Ailes was
[162]
beginning it the whole idea was that it
[164]
would prevent what happened to Richard
[165]
Nixon from ever happening again to a
[167]
Republican so what Geraldo said to Sean
[169]
Hannity is actually kind of true that's
[171]
exactly right and there it sits in plain
[173]
sight because it's not actually a secret
[175]
for Fox News this was actually their
[176]
mission statement or their founding
[178]
document the way that any organization
[179]
would start from sort of a corporate
[181]
principle or a core core TKE this was
[183]
actually the product right after after
[186]
the Nixon Nixon resigned from the
[187]
threats of impeachment Roger Ailes put
[189]
together the original memo that later
[191]
became Fox News in 2010 so let me ask
[193]
you this in in two or three weeks when
[195]
these things become public and the
[196]
process falls into the background
[199]
because the substance now is all we're
[201]
going to be discussing yeah will those
[203]
Fox new viewers the people who primarily
[205]
Fox's their main source of news will
[207]
they know that has happened no they
[209]
won't and if they do they won't really
[210]
believe any of the outcomes or other
[212]
conclusions and they'll actually be a
[213]
larger effect of that because when we
[215]
talk about the Fox audience we really
[216]
have to talk about the larger political
[218]
and information landscape because now
[220]
those lies are out there and there's a
[221]
reason why Donald Trump has more support
[224]
right now to remain there or be the
[225]
Republican nominee than he did two years
[227]
ago and even last year it's actually
[229]
increasing because those people then go
[231]
out and evangelize the lies as well as
[233]
the support for Trump and the larger
[235]
umbrella pot a number of articles for
[237]
Media Matters in front of me Bill Taylor
[238]
testified the other day the head of the
[240]
the US mission in Ukraine it says
[245]
following bill Taylor's damning
[246]
testimony right-wing media work to
[248]
defend Trump and discredit Taylor I
[250]
think you would think it's hard to
[251]
discredit Taylor or Marie Ivanovitch or
[253]
Laura Cooper these are lifers they're
[255]
what some people call the deep state
[257]
they are they are not political people
[259]
that's right and I would point out that
[260]
and and what let me just give you the
[262]
mechanics of what this looks like since
[263]
all this impeachment stuff first started
[265]
the second week of September Trump has
[267]
said eight hundred and thirty seven
[268]
tweets about it
[269]
50% of them have been fox news related
[272]
okay I mean that's an evening he's
[274]
quoting Fox News or he's retweeting
[276]
that's right so I'm a four hundred of
[277]
them have been about about impeachment
[279]
and 50% of them have been Fox News
[281]
related so it is the engine that is
[282]
driving the misinformation so to your
[284]
point about Bill Taylor many of those
[286]
tweets were undermining the credibility
[287]
there right so that is how you then take
[290]
that kernel of misinformation amplify it
[292]
recycle it and then it becomes
[294]
conventional wisdom with the norms until
[297]
