We are at a turning point in transportation.聽 Although gas cars still dominate the roads,聽聽

it's becoming increasingly clear that the聽 future of transport is electric and a lot of聽聽
[12]
this excitement is because of one company. Tesla聽 is disrupting the automotive industry by creating聽聽
[19]
affordable EVs of all kinds. But it almost didn't聽 make it. Success was a longshot and Elon Musk knew聽聽
[28]
it. When we first started Tesla and SolarCity we聽 thought they would fail. Tesla, in particular,聽聽
[35]
we thought probably we've maybe 10% chance of聽 success. This is not the story of a company聽聽
[41]
that nearly died many times. This is the story of聽 a man who would not give up. This is the story of聽聽
[48]
Elon Musk's perseverance against all odds. In聽 2003, in Silicon Valley, two engineers created聽聽
[56]
Tesla. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. They聽 named it after Serbian-American inventor Nikola聽聽
[62]
Tesla. Back then, Tesla was called Tesla Motors.聽 They saw an opportunity to create an electric聽聽
[68]
car after General Motors recalled the EV1 - the聽 first mass-produced electric car in the modern聽聽
[74]
era. It's unclear why GM did this - it could have聽 been because of a lack of demand, high production聽聽
[79]
costs, or pressure from the oil and gas industry.聽 Either way, GM crushed the cars in a junkyard.聽聽

Elon came into the picture when the founders went聽 looking for funding. He made millions when the聽聽
[90]
financial services company he co-founded, x.com,聽 merged with a rival and became PayPal. When eBay聽聽
[96]
bought PayPal in 2002, Elon walked away with $180聽 million. He was very successful. But instead of聽聽
[104]
calling it a career, he sunk all his winnings into聽 new ventures. He put $100 million into SpaceX,聽聽
[111]
$10 million into SolarCity, and $70 million聽 into Tesla including $6.5 million at the start,聽聽
[117]
and became the chairman of the company's board.聽 So, all of the money just came from me personally.聽聽

I didn't want to ask people - other investors聽 - for money if I thought we were going to die.聽聽

2006 was a big year for Tesla. The roadster聽 made its official appearance: a good-looking,聽聽
[134]
fast electric car. But there were quality issues聽 and a lot of production problems. In the end,聽聽
[141]
Eberhard was ousted as CEO before the Roadster聽 even went into production which didn't happen聽聽
[146]
until 2008. Tesla was running out of money. The聽 company budgeted $25 million for the development聽聽
[153]
of the Roadster but it ended up costing nearly聽 five times that. By the fall of 2008, Tesla had聽聽
[159]
only $9 million left to fund the entire company.聽 It was a tumultuous time with multiple CEOs聽聽
[166]
coming and going and in the end, Elon was left in聽 charge. He said this in an interview about the big聽聽
[172]
decision he had to make: "...do I let Tesla die or聽 do I make it live with a lot of pain and grief?"聽聽

He chose to make Tesla live but it couldn't have聽 been more painful. One of America's largest banks,聽聽
[186]
Lehman Brothers, collapsed, sinking the world聽 economy into the worst recession since the聽聽
[191]
Great Depression. Plus, SpaceX was close to being聽 bankrupt after three failed rocket launches. And,聽聽
[197]
he was going through a divorce from his wife聽 Justine. Elon said 2008 was the worst year of聽聽
[203]
his life and he never thought he was someone聽 capable of having a nervous breakdown but came聽聽
[208]
close to it. Elon fought hard to save his聽 companies. He cut 25% of Tesla's workforce聽聽
[215]
and asked friends to help cover payroll. But by聽 December 2008, Tesla was about to die. Still,聽聽
[221]
he didn't give up. He scraped together $20 million聽 from various sources, including the money he made聽聽
[227]
investing in his cousin's data center startup聽 Everdream which Dell had bought the year before.聽聽

Investors agreed to match what he cobbled up and聽 in the end, Elon managed to secure a $40 million聽聽
[239]
round of financing on Christmas Eve. It was the聽 last hour of the last day that it was possible.聽聽

Ashlee Vance wrote a biography about Elon Musk聽 and there's one dinner conversation that Elon聽聽
[250]
had with a Tesla investor that really shows聽 his tenacity. During that dinner, Elon said,聽聽
[255]
I will spend my last dollar on these companies. If聽 we have to move into Justine's parents' basement,聽聽
[261]
we'll do it. Tesla barely pulled through in 2008聽 but needed more money to stay alive. That came in聽聽
[269]
May 2009 when German automaker Daimler invested聽 $15 million by taking a 10% stake in the company.聽聽
[276]
Daimler and Tesla had already been working on an聽 electric smart car. The company also received a聽聽
[281]
$465 million loan from the U.S. Department of聽 Energy which had a program backing clean tech聽聽
[287]
startups. The following year, Tesla found a more聽 stable solution when it went public at $17 a聽聽
[294]
share. Despite the problems with the Roadster,聽 Tesla had achieved something no company had聽聽
[300]
ever done before.聽It proved that electric cars聽 could be cool and fast. But the Roadster was too聽聽
[306]
expensive for most people - costing more than聽 $100,000. So, they built another car. In 2012,聽聽
[312]
Tesla stunned the world when it began shipping聽 the Model S sedan. It took everyone's breath聽聽
[318]
away. The Model S could go more than 300 miles on聽 a single charge and it was more affordable than聽聽
[324]
the Roadster although still expensive. Tesla's聽 problems were still not over and nearly went聽聽
[329]
bankrupt again in 2013. Even though the Model聽 S was in high demand, customers who put down a聽聽
[335]
$5,000 deposit were hesitant about going through聽 with their purchase. There were a lot of reasons聽聽
[340]
for this: complaints about the interior, kinks聽 with the car, some of the earliest versions聽聽
[345]
didn't have parking sensors and cruise control聽 which are common in high-end vehicles. There were聽聽
[350]
also concerns about the resale value. We were聽 operating with maybe one to two weeks of money.

When Elon found out about the problem he did聽 three things. First, he turned every Tesla聽聽
[364]
employee into a salesperson. They called聽 everyone who put down a deposit and tried聽聽
[369]
to convince them to go through with buying the聽 car. Second, he convinced his friend Larry Page,聽聽
[373]
the CEO of Google, to buy Tesla if the company聽 actually did run out of money. Finally, Tesla聽聽
[379]
shut down its factory when orders weren't coming聽 in fast enough but did not admit this publicly,聽聽
[384]
or else it would have scared investors and聽 sent the stock price plummeting. Instead,聽聽
[388]
Tesla said it was closing down for maintenance聽 which was technically true but not the whole聽聽
[393]
story. The strategy worked. On May 8, 2013, Tesla聽 stunned Wall Street by posting its first-ever聽聽
[401]
profit as a public company. Tesla made $11 million聽 on $562 million in sales after delivering 4,900聽聽
[408]
Model S's in the first quarter. Elon saved Tesla聽 from death again. But there were more hardships to聽聽
[416]
come. The company's problems were still not over聽 and nearly went bankrupt again in 2018. This time,聽聽
[422]
it had to do with the Model 3. Elon's vision from聽 the beginning was to build an affordable electric聽聽
[427]
car paid for by the more expensive cars - the聽 Model S and also the Model X which came out a聽聽
[433]
few years earlier. The Model 3 had a base price of聽 $35,000. This is kind of crazy but I just learnt,聽聽
[441]
I was just told that the total number聽 of orders for the Model 3 in the past聽聽
[446]
24 hours has now passed 115,000. But the聽 huge demand also meant the company had to聽聽
[453]
produce the cars in time. And frankly, we're聽 gonna be in production hell. Welcome, welcome.

As the saying goes, if you're聽 going through hell, keep going.

Tesla struggled to meet its production targets. It聽 initially wanted to produce 5,000 Model 3s a week聽聽
[472]
but in the first three months of 2018, it made聽 just 9,800 of them. Tesla was bleeding money as it聽聽
[480]
tried to increase production of the car. It lost聽 $1 billion dollars in the first half of 2019 and聽聽
[485]
scrambled to raise capital. Elon said the company聽 was close to death within single-digit weeks. He聽聽
[492]
even slept on the factory floor because he didn't聽 have time to go home and also because he says he聽聽
[497]
wanted to suffer more than any other employee.聽 Despite the torturous production process,聽聽
[503]
Tesla managed to pull through once again. It聽 turned a corner in the second half of 2019 by聽聽
[509]
delivering over 92,000 Model 3s in the fourth聽 quarter - that's an increase from the same聽聽
[514]
period the year before or a year-over-year of聽 46%. And the latest model - the Model Y - was聽聽
[521]
ahead of schedule. Tesla has managed to survive.聽 Now it's looking ahead to many ambitious plans,聽聽
[528]
including fully autonomous driving, a million-mile聽 battery, and driverless cabs called robotaxis.聽聽

Tesla's stock price hovers around $1,000 a share聽 as of the making of this video but the biggest聽聽
[541]
bulls see it going up way more. Tesla has endured聽 many near-death experiences and through it all,聽聽
[547]
Elon has never ever given up. It's聽 hard to stay alive as a car company,聽聽
[552]
honestly. Not only is Tesla alive but because聽 of his vision, ambition, and relentless drive,聽聽
