Pawn Stars: RARE MARVEL COMIC BOOK - "This Book Has EXPLODED in Value!" (Season 18) - YouTube

Channel: Pawn Stars

[1]
- Hey, how's it going? - Good.
[2]
How about yourself?
[3]
I'm good.
[4]
So what do we have here?
[5]
We have a graded "Werewolf By Night" comic book.
[8]
OK.
[10]
"Werewolf By Night," I mean, what would really scare me
[13]
is a werewolf by day.
[14]
[laughs] I'm at the pawn shop today
[18]
to try to sell my "Werewolf By Night" comic book.
[21]
This is a 9.8 graded comic book of issue
[24]
32, which is the first appearance of Moon Knight.
[27]
If I make the sale today, I'm hoping to use the money
[30]
to help me pay for college.
[32]
This is interesting.
[34]
Where in the world did you get this?
[36]
Uh, I went garage sale shopping
[39]
and there was a whole entire bin of comic books and I got them.
[44]
I love Marvel comics.
[45]
And that was in there.
[46]
I saw that it was pretty pristine and went
[48]
and got it graded, and surprisingly it
[50]
came out at 9.8.
[52]
OK.
[53]
I mean, that's a great rating.
[54]
I've never seen it 9.8 grade comic book in my life.
[57]
But here's what I'll tell you right off the bat,
[60]
I've never heard of this comic book
[62]
character in my entire life.
[64]
So what can you tell me about "Werewolf By Night?"
[67]
Well, the werewolf comic started in 1972.
[71]
This one came out August 1975, and is
[76]
the premiere of Moon Knight, who is the enemy of werewolf.
[82]
OK, um, so what are you asking for this?
[85]
I'm asking for $60,000.
[88]
$60,000.
[89]
Yes, sir.
[90]
OK, um, normally I would just say,
[93]
no but you have this 9.8 grading on this.
[97]
And realistically, I feel like this
[99]
might be worth a lot of money and I don't know about it.
[101]
Mm-hmm.
[103]
Do you mind if I have a buddy of mine come down
[104]
and take a look at it?
[105]
Sure.
[106]
OK, I'll be back as soon as I can.
[107]
All right.
[109]
I know my asking price is kind of high for most people,
[111]
but I know how much this is worth
[113]
and I'm ready to negotiate.
[115]
So Steve, I'm going to just let you know
[118]
I have no idea who Werewolf is.
[120]
I don't know who Moon Knight is.
[122]
But I feel like this is important,
[124]
and I don't really know why.
[125]
This is a massive book right now.
[128]
"Werewolf By Night" is part of Marvel's horror line
[131]
that they began in the early 1970s.
[134]
Just by chance the writer creates Moon Knight,
[136]
character gets put in there, everyone forgets.
[139]
The series gets canceled, the issue 42,
[141]
all the monsters go away.
[142]
Years later someone says, hey, that Moon
[145]
Knight guy was pretty good, why don't we use him again?
[149]
And so Moon Knight was used in various comics over the years
[152]
and his fan base began to grow.
[156]
The issue 32 is actually quite hard to find.
[159]
There's more issues of number 1 than issue 32,
[163]
so it's a perfect storm.
[165]
You have a first appearance of what
[167]
now is a major character in a book
[169]
that was dying at the time.
[171]
And with news that Moon Knight is getting his own streaming
[175]
series, the fan base has just gone crazy
[177]
and this book has exploded in value.
[181]
I actually have this book in my personal collection,
[184]
but my book is only a 6.0.
[186]
I could never even dream of having a 9.8.
[189]
You know, for working out as much as you do,
[192]
man, you're kind of a nerd.
[193]
[laughs]
[195]
So here's the deal, right?
[196]
Like, she's asking for $60,000.
[198]
So give me an idea of what this is worth,
[201]
because it kind of seems like you're
[203]
telling me about a bubble.
[204]
Well, I think $60,000 is a bit strong.
[208]
It's not like she's way off base here, but not quite yet.
[212]
However, for you, the maximum value of this book
[216]
would be $50,000.
[221]
Damn. [laughs]
[222]
I know.
[223]
It sounds amazing.
[224]
Thank you very much for coming down.
[226]
Um, me and her have some business to do.
[229]
All right.
[229]
It's a beautiful book.
[231]
Thank you.
[232]
It was a pleasure seeing it.
[232]
Thank you.
[233]
Thank you.
[235]
I got to say it's very rare that I'm in this position.
[239]
What would you realistically take for it?
[242]
Honestly I wouldn't go lower than $52,000.
[247]
OK, um, do yourself a favor and sell it somewhere else.
[252]
It's too rich for my blood and I'm not going to be
[255]
able to take the risk on it.
[256]
No problem.
[257]
I understand.
[258]
OK.
[258]
Well, thank you very much.
[260]
I mean, this was a huge learning experience for me.
[262]
Let's put it that way. Thank you.
[263]
Have a good day.
[264]
Thank you.
[264]
You as well.
[266]
I'm not disappointed at all that didn't make the sale.
[268]
$50,000 is music to my ears, because I only paid $15
[273]
for that box of comic books.
