I was recently working with a group of聽 executives at a well-known life sciences company聽聽
[6]
and what i uncovered while working with them聽 is every single one of them was extremely聽聽
[11]
nervous about presenting to leadership.聽 So I have 10 tips to share with you today聽聽
[17]
anytime you have to present to leadership or any聽 high stake situation. Stay tuned on Moxie Talk!聽聽
[34]
Hey everyone I'm Fia Fasbinder, welcome to聽 Moxie Talk where we help you find your voice,聽聽
[39]
share your message, and lead with confidence.聽 Today we're talking about how to present to the聽聽
[45]
leadership team or any high-stakes situation. Now聽 I've come up with a methodology that worked for聽聽
[52]
the executives I was coaching andI I think it will聽 work for you too and this is a 10 step program聽聽
[58]
that you can use to make sure you are prepared聽 and you are going to present at your best.聽聽
[68]
The first tip is to prepare I know it聽 sounds like a no-brainer but how many聽聽
[74]
people do you know that just show up聽 and throw up for their presentation?聽聽
[79]
It's so important with leadership teams that聽 are extremely busy are going to see a ton聽聽
[85]
of presentations and you're just one in that聽 lineup to prepare your content ahead of time.聽聽
[92]
So you're probably asking me now how do I prepare聽 I'm going to tell you the first step to preparing聽聽
[98]
your content and this is something that if you do聽 this I swear that leadership team will thank you.聽聽
[108]
The first tip is to begin with the end in mind.聽 You have to think about what are the goals for聽聽
[116]
this presentation what do you want this audience聽 to feel when they're done? What do you want them聽聽
[123]
to know when you're done? And what do you want聽 them to do when you're done? This requires you to聽聽
[131]
synthesize the information that you're presenting聽 to them so they understand the why. I'll give you聽聽
[138]
an example, I recently worked with an executive聽 who was going to give a quarterly review right聽聽
[144]
and his job in finance was just to give the聽 numbers or so he thought. His presentations聽聽
[151]
leading up to working with me were dry boring聽 just numbers but really he was missing the point聽聽
[158]
he wasn't just supposed to give the numbers he was聽 supposed to tell us why those numbers matter. What聽聽
[165]
are we supposed to think about those numbers are聽 we making money? Are we losing money are there聽聽
[170]
ways we can be more productive? Are there ways we聽 can be more effective? You must begin with the end聽聽
[177]
in mind with your content so that's tip number聽 two. The third tip is to be clear and concise聽聽
[189]
don't ramble leadership teams are busy and if you聽 ramble they will cut you off so of course how do聽聽
[197]
you avoid rambling how do you avoid going off聽 on a tangent? You prepare. Prepare by rehearsing聽聽
[204]
your content ahead of time read it ahead of time聽 say it aloud ahead of time. Make sure it's clear聽聽
[210]
concise logical you're saying your message and聽 at the least amount of time possible so that聽聽
[216]
you don't get cut off in the middle of your聽 presentation. Nothing worse than that right?聽聽
[225]
Number four is to tell stories and聽 give examples bring the data to life.聽聽
[232]
I love the quote by Brene Brown which is stories聽 are just data with a soul. So I know a lot of us聽聽
[240]
have data heavy presentations. Bring them to life聽 by telling stories. I'll give you another example聽聽
[248]
I worked with a financial accountant who worked聽 at a large finance company and he was giving a聽聽
[255]
presentation at their annual conference before聽 this he just started with the how to's the how聽聽
[262]
to save money for your ira after working with him聽 i uncovered that he actually had a single mom who聽聽
[271]
worked four jobs to support the family and didn't聽 know how to save money and is now living with this聽聽
[278]
financial advisor because she didn't know how聽 to save money and his single goal in life was聽聽
[284]
to teach people how to save money so that they聽 can retire and there can be a point where they聽聽
[289]
don't have to work so hard when he told this story聽 there was not a dry eye in the house everybody was聽聽
[297]
crying people remembered his presentation years聽 later they came up to him after the presentation聽聽
[302]
and what he was doing was personalizing it聽 and connecting to the audience with a story
[313]
the fifth tip has to do with your slides聽 keep them minimal make sure that you are not聽聽
[321]
talking through a slide by reading us all of the聽 bullets instead talk to the slide minimize the聽聽
[329]
death by powerpoint by taking the bullets off聽 your slide and expanding on each of the points聽聽
[337]
now you're probably wondering well what do i聽 do with the bullets if i take them off my slide聽聽
[341]
you put them in the notes section of your聽 powerpoint or if you're not using a powerpoint聽聽
[348]
with the with the notes you prepare by rehearsing聽 and you run it enough times that you know the聽聽
[355]
content i have died a thousand deaths when i have聽 to sit through a presentation where a speaker just聽聽
[362]
reads the bullets to me and the worst please聽 do not do this is when they go back a slide no聽聽
[370]
make sure your slides are minimal they're聽 concise and that you speak to the slides聽聽
[376]
instead of reading to them our mantra聽 at moxie is your powerpoint is not聽聽
[382]
your teleprompter if you can remember this聽 you'll give such an engaging presentation聽聽
[392]
the sixth is to channel your nervous energy聽 into usable energy how do you do this聽聽
[400]
the best way to do this is by practicing聽 nothing builds confidence like knowing聽聽
[406]
your presentation look things can happen during聽 the presentation that are out of your control聽聽
[411]
you might get cut off somebody might have to聽 leave the room your monitor breaks we can't聽聽
[417]
control those things but if you know your聽 content if you've rehearsed your content聽聽
[423]
those kind of things won't derail you the聽 best way to feel confident is to practice聽聽
[429]
make sure you know your content well enough that聽 if you weren't using your powerpoint you could聽聽
[434]
still talk to those executives and the general聽 rule of thumb to make sure you know your content聽聽
[440]
is five to seven full rehearsals i know it聽 sounds like a lot but if this is a high stake聽聽
[446]
stakes presentation you owe it to yourself聽 to make sure you go out there with confidence聽聽
[457]
the seventh tip is to do a pre-presentation聽 warm-up speaking of confidence you know most聽聽
[463]
of us are most nervous for the first five minutes聽 before a presentation and the first five minutes聽聽
[470]
of our presentation that's like the witching hour聽 when our heart rates are racing and are we're聽聽
[476]
sweating and we can feel our cheeks getting hot聽 right the best way to ensure that you don't look聽聽
[484]
nervous to that executive team because they don't聽 know you're nervous unless you look nervous or you聽聽
[488]
tell them you're nervous the best way to ensure聽 that you go out there with confidence is to warm聽聽
[494]
up right before you go into the presentation look聽 any athlete that has a high stakes game warms up聽聽
[502]
before the game they would never think of just聽 going into the game without a warm-up do you聽聽
[507]
think that a super bowl athlete doesn't warm up聽 before a game of course they do but for something聽聽
[513]
for some reason as speakers we think we can just聽 waltz right in there and start and we're not going聽聽
[517]
to get nervous we need a warm up too and i have聽 four major components to any good speaker warm-up聽聽
[524]
the first is mindset so give yourself a mantra聽 you know say something aloud that makes you feel聽聽
[531]
great and you must say it aloud if you say it聽 allowed you're going to believe it a lot more聽聽
[535]
the the second part to this warm-up is breath work聽 take deep relaxing breaths from your diaphragm and聽聽
[544]
if you're not sure how to do this i have a whole聽 video on diaphragmatic breathing but my mantra is聽聽
[550]
breathe low and slow this will literally bring聽 your heart rate down and tell your body that it聽聽
[557]
can get out of fight or flight and into rest and聽 digest third is do a little warm up with your body聽聽
[564]
you know a lot of us when we're speaking we get聽 stiff right all that adrenaline hits our body and聽聽
[568]
we get stiff or we shake the best way to ensure聽 that you don't look nervous is to do a physical聽聽
[574]
warm-up shake out all those nerves do jumping聽 jacks do push-ups run in place do something聽聽
[580]
to get all of that adrenaline out of your body聽 and the last thing this might sound ridiculous聽聽
[586]
but it is to warm up your mouth the best way to聽 make sure that you don't fumble over your words聽聽
[592]
is to do a warm-up and my favorite easy warm-up聽 is to pretend you're chewing a ton of bubble gum聽聽
[598]
like this right and then it looks ridiculous聽 but you're really warming up your speaker muscle聽聽
[605]
so that you can speak clearly so really easy聽 do this warm up ahead of time obviously don't聽聽
[610]
do it in front of the leadership team if you can聽 find a quiet place to do it that would be great聽聽
[619]
and the eighth tip is to have what i call vocal聽 executive presence look a lot of us when we get聽聽
[627]
nervous it shows in our voice right we can hear聽 it in our voice either our voice goes high in聽聽
[633]
register or it's quivery or it's too soft the聽 best way to ensure that you have vocal executive聽聽
[642]
presence which means that your voice is amplifying聽 your message of authority instead of undermining聽聽
[649]
it is to do a quick vocal warm-up and the easiest聽 way to warm up your voice you do not have to be聽聽
[656]
a singer to do this is to do some simple hums聽 humming is a great way to warm up our vocal cords聽聽
[664]
do your breathing and if you want to learn how聽 to stop your quivering i also have a video on聽聽
[670]
this if your voice quivers women pay attention聽 to your voice going into what we call your head聽聽
[676]
register a lot of us myself included when i get聽 nervous my voice goes into this high register聽聽
[683]
which really undermines our authority and the聽 first step is awareness if you can be aware of聽聽
[690]
going into that head register you can聽 absolutely bring it down and ground that聽聽
[695]
voice right imagine your voice coming from your聽 belly instead of your head practice this way so聽聽
[702]
you feel and hear the difference in your voice聽 so that vocal executive presence is so powerful聽聽
[712]
now along with vocals executive presence聽 is commanding the space with our body聽聽
[718]
now this is what we call presentation power posing聽 and if anyone's watched amy cuddy's ted talk聽聽
[724]
on power posing it's incredible but what this聽 really means is maximizing the space our body聽聽
[730]
takes up in a room when we get nervous a huge聽 cue that we're nervous is our bodies get small聽聽
[736]
right we cross our hands we do what i call聽 the fig leaf our shoulders are slumped we聽聽
[741]
look down we make our bodies small and聽 this is actually an unconscious ancient聽聽
[748]
signal that we are literally trying to hide so聽 that we are not being attacked but we are not聽聽
[754]
going to be attacked this is a presentation it's聽 probably a pretty friendly audience and the best聽聽
[759]
way to ensure that you show vocal executive聽 presence with your body and command the space聽聽
[765]
is to maximize the space your body takes up in a聽 room this is simple just open your chest cavity聽聽
[772]
by imagining that if i were to cut you in half聽 from top to bottom your shoulders would be on聽聽
[777]
the back half of your body right it's not some聽 staunch military pose it's just slightly opening聽聽
[783]
your chest cavity and now strain out the s curve聽 in your spine by imagining imagining an invisible聽聽
[790]
string it starts in the middle of your head and聽 the other half is attached to the ceiling and聽聽
[795]
it's just gently pulling you up right this is what聽 our parents taught us in elementary school stand聽聽
[800]
straight and smile but it's great advice it's a聽 great way to make sure you're commanding the space聽聽
[810]
last but not least we are to the 10th tip聽 is to make sure after all this practice聽聽
[817]
that your authentic speaker persona shines聽 through some of us are natural comedians聽聽
[823]
some of us are more solemn some of us are聽 just a little bit more serious some of us聽聽
[828]
love to move around a room some of us love to stay聽 still whatever it is if it's done with confidence聽聽
[835]
this is showing authenticity and audiences love聽 authentic authenticity we have something called聽聽
[842]
mirror neurons which means we聽 mirror behavior from people we see聽聽
[847]
if you go in there with passion and excitement聽 and confidence your audience will mirror that聽聽
[853]
and that can come in so many different ways so聽 work on developing your authentic speaker persona聽聽
