DESIGN SOFTWARE FOR ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS // what architecture software to learn - YouTube

Channel: Dantier and Balogh Design Studio

[4]
hi everyone welcome back to our channel the number聽 one place for designers artists and creators聽聽
[8]
i'm jacqueline and i'm an interior architect and聽 designer here at D & B in today's video i'm going聽聽
[13]
to be diving into design software and specifically聽 the best software for architects and interior聽聽
[18]
designers in 2020 okay so that being said let's聽 jump in maybe you're an architect or designer who聽聽
[24]
wants to expand their skills or maybe you're even聽 a student and you're not quite sure what design聽聽
[28]
software you need to be learning but don't worry聽 because i'm going to be covering all the software聽聽
[33]
that you need to know in 2020 although in industry聽 we still use traditional methods like drawing and聽聽
[39]
creating physical models which let's face it聽 still have the same great effect on clients聽聽
[45]
design software has become the new normal聽 within the industry which is why you need聽聽
[49]
to know and honestly keep up with the new聽 software that's constantly coming out it's聽聽
[54]
important to know that there's not one magical聽 software that's going to let you do your whole聽聽
[59]
project from start to finish they're more聽 likely divided into different types of groups聽聽
[65]
so we start off with the schematics or聽 concept stage which moves on to develop design聽聽
[76]
and visualization or rendering packages and聽 then your fine tuning and editing programs聽聽
[84]
normally you'll find that the first stage and聽 second stage have the same software types so what聽聽
[89]
types of software are there then when coming up聽 with a concept i typically use adobe photoshop to聽聽
[95]
compile my initial ideas thoughts and concepts for聽 example i would scan in a hand-drawn site analysis聽聽
[102]
or you could completely draw one from scratch聽 but i would suggest if you're drawing shapes聽聽
[107]
and patterns from scratch adobe illustrates is聽 the program you want to be using but photoshop's聽聽
[113]
great for editing and adjusting certain hand聽 drawings and writing annotations stuff like that聽聽
[120]
photoshop is a program that's used to edit any聽 kind of graphics especially in the digital art聽聽
[126]
world and this is actually the first software i聽 learned when i was becoming an interior designer聽聽
[132]
if you're in the design world already then you'll聽 know the importance of photoshop i don't have to聽聽
[137]
explain that to you but if you're not familiar聽 and you're just coming into the design world聽聽
[141]
this is a program that's universal and everyone聽 knows how to use and i'm going to go into聽聽
[146]
photoshop in a bit more detail later on so stay聽 tuned for that however if you wanted to enhance聽聽
[152]
your site analysis diagrams from this to this聽 you wouldn't be able to do that within photoshop聽聽
[159]
fully i created this site analysis diagram using聽 the bim software vectorworks if you're unfamiliar聽聽
[166]
with what bim is um i've actually made a video on聽 this so feel free to check it out and then come聽聽
[172]
back to this video vectorworks is a software that聽 i swear by it's essentially a program that allows聽聽
[177]
you to flip from 2d to 3d really really easily and聽 it allows you to complete lots of things on your聽聽
[184]
design project from cad drawings to 3d modeling聽 and even visualizations which is a really good聽聽
[191]
aspect vectorworks is a good package if you want聽 an all-rounded software to use on every aspect of聽聽
[197]
a project revit i'm sure you've all heard of it聽 it's really well known and a lot of people in the聽聽
[203]
design world use revit and it's essentially the聽 same as vectorworks it's a bim software but as far聽聽
[211]
as i'm concerned more people use revit especially聽 if you're based in america it's reliable it's well聽聽
[219]
liked and it's universal lots of people know聽 how to use it sketchup this is a program that i聽聽
[225]
actually learned when i was at school when i was聽 about 14 i think doing gcses in my design class聽聽
[233]
and it really taught me the fundamentals of 3d聽 design it's not the most perfect program but it's聽聽
[240]
free and it's like its counterparts in the sense聽 that it is a bim software it can do 2d and 3d聽聽
[247]
but you can't really compare it to things like聽 revit and vector works it's not as sophisticated聽聽
[253]
but the reason why it's on my list is because聽 it's free so it's a great way to learn 3d modeling聽聽
[260]
but it has changed a lot since i first used it um聽 it used to be completely free and it still is but聽聽
[266]
if you want to download it to your desktop and use聽 it all the time i think it's about 300 um if you聽聽
[274]
don't download it it's free but you have to use on聽 a cloud so you can't download it to your desktop聽聽
[280]
but for the most part it's free and it does allow聽 you to build up those 3d modeling skills before聽聽
[286]
you actually purchase a more expensive software it聽 also allows you access to the warehouse which is聽聽
[292]
a catalog of 3d models and objects that you聽 can download and place into your own model聽聽
[299]
i even use the warehouse to download聽 models into my vectorworks document聽聽
[303]
because i use it for stranger things such聽 as food or really intricate detailed items聽聽
[311]
because let's face it we don't want to be聽 spending a whole week designing a chair聽聽
[315]
so there's really good options there that i聽 use because sketchup is universally known it's聽聽
[322]
accumulated a huge selection of 3d models on聽 the warehouse so check that out i know many聽聽
[328]
designers that use sketchup because obviously it's聽 free but you can also transfer your models into聽聽
[334]
visualization programs and achieve聽 really good hyper realistic renders聽聽
[339]
what do you guys think of this one okay so now聽 i'm going to talk about visualization programs聽聽
[344]
or rendering programs this is such a huge category聽 and when i started rendering and started to learn聽聽
[351]
about what rendering is and what programs聽 there are it was a minefield and the reason聽聽
[356]
why there's so many is because they're used in聽 so many industries for example the game industry聽聽
[363]
animation illustration even motion graphics web聽 design and of course archer section design but聽聽
[370]
of course i want you to show you the best聽 ones for architects and interior designers聽聽
[375]
3ds max is a fan favorite and is created by聽 autodesk the creators of revit maya and autocad
[386]
and it's loved by gamers and animators too but聽 it's particularly good for interior design which聽聽
[392]
is similar to cinema 4d which is a program聽 created by maxon this is the software that i聽聽
[398]
first learned to render on and it's extremely good聽 for realistic renders and even motion work if you聽聽
[404]
want to do things like that however personally聽 i found it quite complicated and it's definitely聽聽
[411]
something you couldn't learn within a week聽 the visualization program that i use now聽聽
[415]
is twin motion which is actually made by the聽 same makers of unreal engine which is one of聽聽
[420]
the top game design softwares and the reason why聽 it's on here is because it really intrigued me聽聽
[425]
it was it's specifically designed for聽 interior design and architecture and that is聽聽
[430]
very clear to see on the program for example it聽 has a huge selection of materials that you can聽聽
[436]
easily be dragged and dropped onto your model not聽 like other rendering programs where you can spend聽聽
[442]
about 10 minutes just creating a material from聽 scratch and i really appreciate that because it聽聽
[447]
lowers the amount of time i spend on the rendering聽 program and the bespoke nature of the program聽聽
[453]
makes it easy to navigate and use one other thing聽 that's just amazing to me is the rendering times聽聽
[459]
in my experience if you do one still image render聽 on cinema 4d it can take anywhere from one hour to聽聽
[467]
a whole day but what i found in twin motion with聽 the same one image is i can take anywhere from 10聽聽
[474]
seconds to 10 minutes so honestly if you have聽 worked on a rendering software before then you聽聽
[480]
know how quick that actually is and that's on my聽 thinkpad p51 laptop by the way just to give you an聽聽
[486]
idea hey anything that makes my life easier it's聽 also worth mentioning that it's really good for聽聽
[492]
doing animated walkthroughs through a space and聽 even vr stuff so that's something to point out聽聽
[499]
now i want to talk about software to edit and聽 you know fine-tune your projects to make them聽聽
[504]
perfection i see things like this nowadays聽 in architecture which is you know these funky聽聽
[510]
collages and digital illustration looking uh聽 sections and elevations which to be honest i聽聽
[517]
don't really care for but if you want to know聽 how the software you need here is photoshop聽聽
[526]
photoshop will allow you to enhance and completely聽 be creative with your designs and change them聽聽
[531]
in any way you'd like when i was a student i聽 usually used it for adding annotations and say聽聽
[538]
creating axonometric diagrams so i'd get one聽 layer and then pile them up but these days i聽聽
[545]
just use it for editing my own hand drawings and聽 creating quick concept diagrams another software聽聽
[552]
that you need to know is adobe indesign if you're聽 thinking how on earth are you going to format all聽聽
[556]
your design pieces into one document this is the聽 program for you this is a software for publishing聽聽
[563]
and formatting indesign is kind of like a more聽 sophisticated version of microsoft publisher if聽聽
[570]
you remember that and most likely if you work聽 in magazine publishing book editing stuff like聽聽
[575]
that this is a software that they'll use as聽 well and you'll most probably need this to
[584]
set out your designs in some sort of order add any聽 writing layering stuff like that it's perfect for聽聽
[591]
that and you can even make magazines and books聽 from it and i just want to mention a few apps聽聽
[597]
so the app that i see constantly these days is聽 procreate which is especially popular on ipads聽聽
[605]
it's an app that allows you to sketch paint letter聽 and create and i find that it's especially popular聽聽
[612]
within the illustration and lettering community聽 but recently i found that architects and designers聽聽
[618]
are leaning more towards creating sketches聽 digitally these are some fantastic designs聽聽
[624]
created by narendra sagu a senior partner聽 and art director at fostering partners聽聽
[630]
he believes that his team of artists are creating聽 pioneering presentations which have helped the聽聽
[636]
team to actually win projects and i mean you can聽 clearly see why i mean i've tried these apps and聽聽
[643]
personally i like to stick with marker pens and聽 bleed proof paper but try it at least because i聽聽
[648]
know many people who like to sketch digitally聽 these days i'm sure you've seen many many聽聽
[654]
apps for architects and designers but here are聽 some to name a few bimx morpholio autodesk format聽聽
[662]
concepts and many many others it's really endless聽 isn't it on the app store i've tried many of these聽聽
[669]
and i think it's like a phase you go through聽 you just want to see if any of these apps are聽聽
[673]
good because you'll see like a wow image and you聽 just think oh my gosh i should do that on that app聽聽
[679]
but it's different from when you actually try聽 it yourself and i found that it's easier to do聽聽
[684]
things like that on a desktop especially any聽 3d modelling but that's what i find anyway聽聽
[690]
but the great thing about these apps is that聽 the majority of them are free all you need to聽聽
[695]
do is make an account and that's why i'd urge聽 you to play around with them because you might聽聽
[699]
really really like them these are the best design聽 software packages for architects and designers in聽聽
[705]
2020 although there are so many out there and聽 new ones are being released every single day聽聽
[711]
who knows what design software will be like聽 in the next five years on this channel we talk聽聽
[716]
about interior design architecture illustration聽 art and graphics so if any of that interests you聽聽
[722]
make sure to subscribe to see videos just聽 like this one and if you like this video聽聽
[726]
then please give it a big thumbs up because by聽 doing that you really do support our channel聽聽
[731]
okay that's it for today guys聽 i'll see you in the next video
[734]
bye
