[7]
Hi I鈥檓 Jenny from the MSQC. I鈥檝e got a really fun little project for you today. Take
[12]
a look at this darling little runner. It鈥檚 so quick and easy and just uses scraps. So
[18]
you鈥檙e going to love this one. So what you鈥檙e going to need to make this is you鈥檙e going
[22]
to need an 8 陆 inch square of black. I鈥檝e got one of those right here. You鈥檙e going
[26]
to need several 2 陆 inch squares and a couple of 2 陆 inch strips for the border. And then
[33]
all you鈥檙e going to need is some scraps, a leftover jelly roll strip size, 2 陆 inches
[38]
of strips. And you鈥檙e just going to need some scraps so it鈥檚 just kind of fun. Lots
[43]
of times we get leftover pieces and, and this is a great project to use for that.
[50]
So the first thing you鈥檙e going to do is with your jelly roll, I mean, sorry you鈥檙e
[54]
going to take your binding tool and you鈥檙e going to lay it on your jelly roll strip.
[58]
Now I have two pieces here. This is an actual strip that is put in half. And I鈥檓 going
[66]
to cut two at one time. And the reason I鈥檓 going to do that because we want both angles.
[71]
So we want the right angle and the left angle. And so we鈥檙e going to cut this out and I鈥檒l
[75]
show you what I mean. So I鈥檓 just going to trim this off. The nice thing about this
[80]
binding tool is it has this perfect 45 degree on the side here. So you can see when you
[88]
cut two of these at once, you鈥檙e going to have one angle going one direction and one
[94]
angle going the other. Let me cut one more to show you that again. This one you might
[101]
be able to see a little better. It鈥檚 a little brighter. So again we just line this up on
[106]
the edges of your jelly roll strip. Cut off that corner and cut off this end right here.
[112]
And then you鈥檙e going to have these two pieces here. And they are both going different
[118]
directions, your angles. And you need that because we鈥檙e going to build this from the
[122]
square out.
[123]
So we鈥檙e going to start with our 8 录 inch square in the center. And we鈥檙e going to
[128]
build out from there. You want to cut all your pieces. And when you鈥檝e got them all
[132]
cut out and laid out how you want them, half of those pieces you鈥檙e going to take and
[136]
you鈥檙e going to sew a 2 陆 inch square onto the back. So just choose one side and sew
[143]
a 2 陆 inch square on that back. So half of your pieces will look like this and the other
[148]
half will be short like this and they will be going opposite directions. So let me show
[152]
you how I laid mine out.
[155]
So you start with your square in the middle, let me scoot these over here. You start with
[161]
your square in the middle and then these angles actually are what鈥檚 going to make with your
[166]
straight edge. So you鈥檒l attach one of those right on here. And again you鈥檙e just going
[171]
to put right sides together and sew a quarter inch seam. So you鈥檒l put that there. And
[178]
then you鈥檙e going to put a long one here. And see this block now lines with this one
[183]
to make that, make that diamond appear. And then you鈥檒l just go ahead and lay these
[189]
out. And you really do want to lay them out before you start sewing because we want lots
[196]
of different colors. This, this renaissance fabric is just beautiful. That Jenny Byers,
[207]
very talented with and, and so free with her colors. I love it. Ok we need a, here we go.
[215]
One more. So you can see how that looks when it鈥檚 all laid out. Now what I鈥檓 going
[224]
to do is I like to pile mine up like this. And I鈥檒l pile this side and then I鈥檒l
[231]
pile this side and then I鈥檒l go over to the sewing machine and I will sew these together.
[236]
And I鈥檒l put a short one on and a long one on and a short one on and a long one on. And
[240]
I鈥檒l just take one from each stack until I finish this up. And then I鈥檒l come back
[244]
here and show you how we put those borders on.
[246]
Ok so what we鈥檙e going to do now, we鈥檝e added this first one on. And we鈥檙e going
[250]
to add this second one which means that this little juncture right here, these two little
[256]
seams you want to line up. And that鈥檚 going to give us this black diamond on the top.
[261]
So let鈥檚 go ahead and sew that down. And put a pin in there if you鈥檇 like. Now we鈥檒l
[290]
want to press this open. There we go. And then we鈥檙e just going to repeat. We鈥檙e
[301]
going to take the short side again and put a, see one of these will, one of these short
[308]
ones will now match up on here and then we鈥檒l again add the long. And we鈥檒l just go along.
[314]
Alright so our little top is finished now. And what we need to do is add some borders.
[320]
And I鈥檓 just going to add a 2 陆 inch strip of black. And the way you do this, whenever
[327]
you have a curved border like this you let your runner be your pattern. So what I鈥檓
[333]
going to do is I鈥檓 going to take this and sew right sides together and I鈥檓 going to
[336]
give myself a little bit of leeway up here and, right here you can see I have just a
[341]
little edge hanging over. And I鈥檓 going to just go ahead and sew this straight down
[346]
here until I reach this end. And I鈥檒l show you how we make this border work for us. Whenever
[355]
you鈥檙e sewing borders on make sure that you put your border on the top. If you put
[360]
your border fabric on the bottom then your feed dogs will take up too much fabric and
[366]
you鈥檒l end up with wavy borders. And we don鈥檛 want that. We want our border to be
[370]
nice and flat. So be sure and put your border fabric on the top, just let the bottom fabric,
[378]
you don鈥檛 want to pull it. Let the feed dogs take that in. And then just make sure
[386]
that top fabric stays nice and straight. You want to put your sides on first with this
[399]
table runner. And so we鈥檙e going to press this open now. And we鈥檙e just going to leave
[409]
the whole long thing on there and just press it open. By having that border piece on the
[414]
top we鈥檙e naturally pressing to the dark. So get that nice and straight. And now what
[422]
we鈥檙e going to do is we鈥檙e going to let our table runner determine the angle of our
[428]
border. So I鈥檓 going to put my ruler right along this edge of this table runner right
[432]
here. So then what we鈥檙e cutting off is just this edge of the border piece right here.
[438]
Just like that. And we鈥檒l do the same thing on this end so you can see it again. So again
[445]
we鈥檙e going to let the table runner make the pattern. And I鈥檓 just going to go along
[454]
here and trim that off. So then we鈥檙e going to add the other side. And then I鈥檒l show
[460]
you how to do the points.
[461]
So now you have both sides sewn down and it should look like this. You know it should
[465]
just need its end borders put on. So what I鈥檓 going to do is I鈥檓 going to take one
[470]
of these little leftover pieces and I鈥檓 going to put it, I鈥檓 going to clip off this
[474]
selvedge right here. We don鈥檛, you never want to leave the selvedge on in your quilt.
[479]
You鈥檒l have those holes, that won鈥檛 be good. So we鈥檙e going to put this, I鈥檓
[483]
just going to match it right up with the edge of this and sew it right down the side. So
[488]
let鈥檚 go do that. There we go. Now every time you sew one of these little borders on
[521]
you want to make sure that you press it open. Because you want your angle cut from the,
[529]
the open side. You know if you try and press it while it鈥檚 closed that angle鈥檚 going
[532]
to be going the wrong direction. So you open that up. And again all you do is you let your,
[540]
let me turn these around for my lefthanded way. So you let the edge of your runner be
[547]
your guide. And you鈥檙e just going to cut this off like this. So you can see how that
[555]
gives you that nice border. And one this one over here we鈥檙e going to do the same thing.
[559]
So we鈥檙e just going to start from the top. And sew right down there and then trim these
[565]
off. So let鈥檚 go do that. We鈥檙e just about done here.
[569]
Alright so now we鈥檙e going to trim up this other side. And I have a little bit peeking
[575]
over this side. So we鈥檒l go ahead and use our runner as our pattern, our guide. And
[583]
then this one right here. So this is how you do borders on anything that鈥檚 angled. You
[591]
would start with your longest pieces first and trim them off at the angle that it鈥檚
[596]
going. And then your table runner is ready to go. So here is the finished one. I鈥檓
[600]
calling it the Binding Tool Diamond Braid. And we hope you enjoyed this tutorial from
[605]
the MSQC.
