Building Cool Apps and Coding The Future | GoldieBlox's Fast Forward Girls - YouTube
Channel: GoldieBlox
[0]
I need a noun guys.
[0]
I'm gonna pick Michael Jordan.
[2]
Okay, Michael Jordan.
[3]
(rewinding tape)
[5]
Hi, I'm Shameless Maya and
this if Fast Forward Girls.
[9]
If you don't know me,
my name is Analia Blas.
[10]
I just landed in San Francisco.
[12]
GoldieBlox sent me down here.
[13]
They gave me this super
cool gold suitcase.
[15]
We have this little envelope, right?
[17]
Pack a bag for the city
by the bay, which I did.
[19]
I'm here, it says hi, welcome.
[22]
Shook.
[23]
How does data drive story telling you ask?
[25]
Have no fear, you're well on your way.
[28]
Well, since I'm on my way,
I guess I'll find out.
[31]
That's not very much of a clue,
[32]
but it might be 'cause
girl look at this map.
[35]
Do you see these?
[36]
What could this be?
[37]
What are these glasses?
[38]
(airy music)
[39]
Hi.
[40]
What's the deal with the glasses?
[43]
That's what's in the box.
[44]
I guess tomorrow's a new day.
[46]
I'll find out what the GoldieBlox
team has in store for me.
[48]
(light music)
[50]
They're taking me to the mystery location.
[52]
I still have no idea where it is.
[53]
I guess we'll see.
[57]
Hey guys.
[58]
GoldieBlox just dropped me off
[59]
in front of this huge building.
[61]
(tape rewinding)
[64]
Hey!
Hi!
[65]
Hello.
[66]
How are you?
[67]
I'm doing good.
[68]
I'm Esha.
[68]
Hi, I'm Analia.
[69]
Nice to meet you.
[70]
I am Esha Gupta.
[71]
I am a co-founder and
head of content at Hooked.
[74]
Oh, I know that app.
[75]
Me and my friends use it all the time.
[76]
Oh that's awesome.
[77]
Are you ready to see how we build our app
[79]
and tell stories on it?
[80]
Yeah let's go check it out.
[81]
Okay, awesome.
[82]
(tape fast forwarding)
[84]
Hooked is an app that
tells stories in the form
[87]
of chat conversations and also video,
[89]
specifically for mobile.
[91]
Even though we're a very creative app,
[93]
it's very, very data driven at the core
[95]
and we use science and
technology basically
[97]
to determine what we
pursue on a creative level.
[101]
We have 50 million people
coming in to the app
[103]
every month
Whoa.
[105]
reading our stories.
[105]
That's so cool.
[106]
This is like our little
reading nook in the office.
[109]
Oh I love this.
[110]
I have to take a selfie with you.
[111]
Can we take one?
Of course.
[112]
Let's do it.
[113]
(camera snapshot)
[114]
How do you use analytics to story tell?
[115]
That's a good question.
[116]
We wanted to see if the gender
[118]
of the hero of a story matters.
[120]
Boys actually have no preference.
[123]
Girls on the other hand, do
have a slight preference.
[125]
They prefer having a female hero.
[127]
You can conclude for that,
[129]
that it's better to have a
female character as a hero.
[132]
That's so cool.
[133]
It really is inspiring to
make me want to be the hero
[135]
of my own story.
[136]
You are the hero of your own story.
[137]
We threw up some code
[138]
to show you what the behind the
scenes looks like at Hooked.
[141]
- [Analia] Everybody here is coders or?
[143]
Cyril's our main coding man.
[146]
He basically built the app from scratch.
[148]
Do you know anything about coding?
[149]
I took a high school course,
[150]
I look a computer science class.
[152]
I know the very basics.
[153]
I know a little bit about
functions, four loops
[155]
and IF statements, so a little bit.
[158]
You're off to a good start.
[159]
I have a challenge for you.
[160]
Okay.
[161]
Are you ready?
[162]
Yeah, let's go.
[162]
All right let's do it.
[163]
(upbeat victorious music)
[167]
All right, are you ready
for the word challenge?
[168]
Yeah let's get started.
[169]
We're taking a piece from
one of our chat stories,
[171]
and you have to fill it in
with different parts of speech.
[173]
Okay.
[173]
First word I need, is a verb.
[175]
(yells)
Slurping.
[176]
Okay, next word is a noun.
[178]
(laughs)
My Tio Pepe.
[181]
All right, and next word is also a noun.
[183]
I need a noun guys.
[184]
I'm gonna pick Michael Jordan.
[186]
Okay, Michael Jordan.
[187]
All right next word is a verb.
[190]
- [Woman] Running out of time!
[191]
Sleeping.
- [Woman] Need a verb!
[192]
All right, and last word is a noun.
[194]
Cream.
[195]
Cream?
[196]
Cream.
[197]
(chuckles)
[198]
Okay, all right.
[199]
Don't cheat, don't peek.
[201]
Oh, okay.
[201]
Don't look.
[202]
(laughs)
[203]
All right it's time for the big reveal.
[206]
Tada!
[207]
Here's your story!
[208]
I'm gonna be future
Kate, and you'll be Kate.
[210]
Okay.
[211]
- [Esha] I'm slurping
you from the year 2039.
[213]
and I am you Kate.
(staff members laughs)
[215]
- [Analia] I'm going to block
(staff members laughs)
[217]
this Tio Pepe.
(staff members laughs)
[218]
- [Esha] Wait!
(staff members laughs)
[219]
I can prove I'm you.
(staff members laughs)
[221]
- [Analia] How?
(staff members laughs)
[222]
Esha] I know something
(staff members laughs)
[223]
about you no one else knows.
(staff members laughs)
[224]
- [Analia] Oh yeah?
[225]
What's that?
[226]
- [Esha] You have a Michael Jordan.
[227]
You sleeping it up with a cream.
[228]
(staff members laughs)
[229]
and you can't sleep without it.
[230]
Love it.
[231]
(laughs)
(staff members laughs)
[232]
This is a crazy story,
[234]
but I think we should put
your version of this part
[237]
of the story in the app.
[238]
What do you think?
[239]
Yeah. Let's do it.
[240]
All right.
[241]
Let's change out the words to the story.
[242]
- [Analia] You're just
putting in everything
[244]
straight into the text file?
[245]
Into the text file.
[246]
Just gonna upload this file
that we just edited together.
[249]
Now, we're gonna click into the app.
[251]
It's up that fast?
[252]
You just have to scan a code
and your entire story comes up?
[255]
Yeah, well we changed the text file,
[257]
uploaded it, rendered in the app,
[259]
and then we opened it with the code,
[261]
and now we're gonna see it live.
[262]
- [Analia] That's where
all of what I put starts?
[264]
- [Esha] Yeah.
[265]
I can't believe that
it's already on the app.
[267]
Everything that I put in
the app, and I'm reading it.
[269]
Yeah.
[270]
My friends are never gonna believe
[271]
that I wrote my own Hooked story.
[273]
You can write one anytime for us,
[274]
so just let me know.
[275]
I'll keep you up on that.
[276]
(laughs)
[277]
(tape fast forwarding)
(light happy music)
[282]
- [Vlada] Hi!
Hello!
[283]
Come on in!
[284]
How are you?
Hi!
[285]
I'm Vlada.
[286]
I'm Analia.
[287]
Nice to meet you.
[288]
Nice to meet you.
[288]
Welcome to my home.
[290]
Thank you.
[290]
Hi, my name is Vlada Bortnik,
[292]
and I'm CEO and Founder of Marco Polo.
[293]
This is where I work.
[295]
We have 31 employees ranging
from three different countries
[299]
and 10 different states.
- [Analia] Wow.
[301]
I thought I'd show you
how Marco Polo works.
[302]
(digital tone)
[304]
we're bringing back face
to face conversations
[306]
in a way that's really, really authentic.
[307]
You just open up Marco Polo,
[309]
you click either a person or a group
[311]
that you want to chat with.
[312]
I'm gonna pick Meagan here,
[314]
and then you press start.
[315]
You say, hey Megan!
[316]
Hello!
[317]
(laughs)
[318]
That's so cool.
[319]
I am here with my friend Analia,
[320]
and just showing her how Marco Polo works.
[323]
You can tell she's already watching.
[324]
Oh.
[325]
That means that when I'm done talking,
[327]
she can still respond.
[328]
They just come up right here,
[330]
and you can see what they're saying.
[331]
Yeah.
And she sent a heart.
[332]
She sends you a heart, yeah.
[333]
Have you coded any of this?
[334]
Very first version my
husband and I did together.
[336]
My background is computer
engineering and art,
[338]
and that really prepared
me for creating a new app.
[341]
Being an engineer, the thing
I learned the most in school,
[344]
the thing that's most
important is problem solving.
[346]
I took the first class that
our school has ever provided
[350]
for our entire high school.
[351]
We took a computer programming class.
[353]
My teacher had never taught it before.
[356]
He was my math teacher previously,
[358]
and then he just started
teaching computer science.
[360]
He was teaching us how to
program really early stages.
[363]
We only know the super basics,
[364]
but we were coding in Java.
[366]
Uh huh, yeah.
[367]
He taught us
[368]
a little for Python.
We use Java as well.
[369]
Oh really?
[370]
Okay.
[371]
Yeah on Android.
what parts did you-
[372]
Well actually, when I was
a kid, I thought I wanted
[374]
to be a Doctor since my
Grandparents are Doctors.
[375]
But I've also always been
really interested in technology.
[377]
I always liked taking things apart,
[380]
and figuring out how things work,
[381]
and so when my high school
offered computer science class,
[383]
I jumped in and actually my teacher
[385]
was also a math instructor.
[387]
Really?
Yeah.
[388]
I remember my Senior year,
[390]
when it was time to apply for Med School,
[392]
I realized that actually
I don't want to be Doctor.
[395]
I decided to do computer engineering.
[396]
(digital tone)
[397]
I really like that you are learning
[398]
how the entire computer system works.
[400]
I think that's just
something so many people
[402]
don't really think about.
[403]
Somebody has to sit down
and program these apps.
[405]
I definitely think we need
to have more women engineers
[408]
because we make up 50% of
the population, if not more.
[411]
We got to be representing.
[413]
The beauty of being an engineer
[415]
is that any idea that you have,
[416]
you can make it happen.
[417]
I have a cool challenge for you.
[418]
Are you ready for it?
[419]
Yes, let's go.
[420]
All right pull up a chair.
[421]
(upbeat victorious music)
[425]
One of the ways we decide
what were gonna work on next
[427]
is we listen to people who use Marco Polo.
[429]
Every week I get a report of
what are the top 10 things
[431]
that people are asking for.
[432]
The thing that kept coming
up, like every week,
[435]
was something like people
kept getting stuck.
[437]
Saying Marco Polo is black
and white all of a sudden.
[440]
We're trying to figure out.
[441]
Okay, what is going on?
[442]
We figured it out that it
has to do with filters.
[445]
People would swipe accidentally,
[448]
and end up in a state like this,
[449]
and they have no-
[451]
and have no way to go back.
[451]
Exactly.
[452]
So, the challenge is how
would you solve this problem?
[455]
Oh, okay.
[456]
(laughs)
[457]
Ideally, let's do this together,
[459]
because nobody likes
working by themselves.
[460]
I'll give you the pencil.
[461]
How I like to start is thinking about
[464]
what is the actual issue.
[466]
We need to figure out how to make it
[469]
so instead of getting to
the filters by swiping,
[472]
maybe it's an icon at the
bottom that they can choose
[475]
and then they can choose
filters from there.
[477]
I know that there's a few apps here,
[479]
and things that you can
actually touch and do.
[482]
It can be an icon down here,
[484]
and then the user can touch it
and then that's when they can
[487]
go ahead and choose, okay this
is the filter that I want,
[489]
rather than just swiping
so they don't get stuck
[492]
in that black and white.
[493]
Great.
[494]
The other thing to think about is,
[495]
okay what are the down
sides of this design?
[496]
Before people were just
able to swipe on a filter,
[499]
to swipe on the screen to get to a filter.
[501]
Now, we're introducing a button.
[502]
Right.
[503]
What's a downside of that?
[505]
How can we tell users,
if you want a filter,
[508]
this is the button to choose?
[509]
Exactly.
[510]
That's definitely one of the downsides.
[511]
The other one is, that now
something that they were doing
[515]
so easily and fun is now-
[516]
Is now more difficult.
[517]
Every solution will have
[519]
the positives
it's downside.
[521]
And the downsides,
[522]
and we just got to
think through which one.
[524]
I came up with another idea,
[525]
and I'll show it to you here.
[526]
What do you use those glasses for?
[528]
GoldieBlox gave me some as a clue.
[529]
No way, that's so funny.
[531]
They also have a special filter on them
[533]
to make it easier for me to be working
[535]
on a computer screen for many hours.
[537]
It helps with eye strain.
[538]
Here's a prototype that one
of our designers put together.
[540]
You can see that what we
were really attached to
[543]
is making it easy for
people to use filters
[546]
as they're recording.
[547]
We thought that if as you're swiping,
[549]
it actually shows you the name.
[551]
Oh, okay.
[552]
Right in the middle, and make it easier.
[554]
But what do you think
the problem is with this?
[556]
(record scratch)
[557]
People were still getting confused.
[559]
(laughs)
[560]
Yes, exactly.
[561]
On top of it,
[562]
it actually wasn't super easy
[564]
to implement technically either.
[565]
Oh, okay.
[566]
We actually end up going with the solution
[568]
that you proposed.
[569]
(victorious tune)
Oh, okay.
[570]
Let me show you what that turned out like.
[571]
I click on the conversation with Megan,
[573]
and we added the button,
just like you suggested,
[575]
and we put all the fun things you can do
[578]
on Marco Polo in one spot.
[579]
(light music)
[581]
Congratulations.
[582]
(laughs)
[583]
Thank you!
[583]
(tape fast forwarding)
[586]
Aw, thank you so much.
Thank you so much.
[589]
Thank you so much for
spending the day with me.
[590]
Such a fun day to spend with you.
[592]
Thank you for coming over.
[593]
Before you go, I have something for you.
[595]
Close your eyes, open your hands.
[598]
Now open your eyes.
[599]
I know you like buttons.
[601]
Oh my gosh!
[602]
(laughs)
[603]
I'm gonna put it on my jacket!
[604]
Awesome.
[604]
Oh my God, yes!
[605]
Can I help you do that?
[606]
Yes, please.
[610]
Thank you so much.
[611]
Thank you.
[612]
Okay, I got to go.
[614]
Bye!
[614]
Goodbye.
[615]
(splash)
[619]
Hi Analia, it's Maya.
[621]
How are you?
[622]
I'm doing good, how about you?
[623]
I'm good.
[624]
Oh, love the hair.
[625]
Thank you, I love yours.
[627]
(laughs)
Thank you.
[628]
I am here to help you choose a mentor.
[631]
I heard you're deciding between two.
[633]
Yeah, I'm having a really tough time.
[635]
Tell me about it.
[635]
I just don't know who to
pick between the two of them.
[638]
They're just such amazing women.
[640]
What did you come up with?
[641]
What are you thinking about?
Well..
[642]
Vlada was so amazing because she's a coder
[646]
and she was teaching me about
how she created the Marco Polo
[649]
app and I got to see all of that,
[651]
but then Esha brought me into the office
[653]
and I got to see the
cooperation first hand,
[655]
and the app, I love it.
[657]
Me and my friends use it all the time,
[659]
so I don't know.
[661]
I'm just really stuck between
who I want to mentor me.
[664]
I don't know, they're just
such both amazing people.
[667]
Yes it sounds challenging,
[668]
but I think one, don't be
afraid and I think you know,
[673]
and it's just about being brave enough
[676]
to go with that decision.
[680]
You know what?
[681]
I think I know who I want to mentor me.
[683]
I think I know.
Yay!
[684]
Well I'm so proud of you
[686]
and congratulations on
everything you've been doing.
[687]
It's so inspiring to see
young woman making big moves!
[690]
Well thank you so much!
[691]
(clapping)
[692]
(laughs)
[693]
Okay, we'll talk soon
[694]
and I'm gonna find out
[696]
who you decide on.
Okay by Maya!
[697]
Okay, bye.
[698]
It's Analia, and I thought about it,
[701]
and I really would love
for you to mentor me
[703]
if you're down, please let me know.
[705]
Send me a Marco Polo back.
[706]
I'd love to ask you questions about coding
[707]
and have you help me through my journey.
[710]
Thank you much Vlada, bye.
[711]
(upbeat music)
[712]
Absolutely!
[713]
I am so excited.
[714]
Thank you for picking me
and I'm looking forward
[717]
to being on this journey with you.
[718]
Bye!
[727]
This over here, it looks
really like, sci-fi
[730]
looking Star Trek type clothes things.
[733]
These are like lazar tag or something?
[735]
It's not lazar tag, it's
called Music Not Impossible.
[737]
It's a wearable device.
[738]
It means that it's a piece of clothing
[740]
that has technology in it.
[741]
Do you want to try it on?
[742]
Yes, can I?
[743]
Yeah, I want to wear this.
