Building a Homestead from Scratch | 2 Months In | Feat. Roots and Refuge - YouTube
Channel: Justin Rhodes
[0]
the thing i like most about this story is it's聽
lily you're watching this all right trying to hit聽聽
[9]
try not to hit the tripod every day is bringing聽
your kid to work day i like about this story is聽聽
[15]
that it's a classic homestead story so many of聽
you guys are starting out you're looking for raw聽聽
[21]
land you're looking for something existing to buy聽
and many others of you are just in the grind it聽聽
[29]
doesn't matter this is the classic homestead story聽
from a very different angle you guys are used to聽聽
[34]
this you're used to selfie shots and us walking聽
around and filming ourselves so besides being聽聽
[42]
the classic starting over homestead story聽
this is a story from a third person angle聽聽
[50]
on one of our favorite people right jess and聽
jeremiah sowers and their wonderful family聽聽
[54]
from roots and refuge farm this is the angle聽
we're going at normally this is what i do i聽聽
[61]
hold a camera and i open a door and share a seat聽
at the table of my life with you but this can be a聽聽
[70]
little bit difficult you know sometimes trying to聽
be present trying to get work done trying to tell聽聽
[75]
a good story it's hard when you're also trying to聽
be a cameraman and a producer and a director all聽聽
[81]
in one i'm gonna hand this off to these guys聽
and i'm just gonna live my life in this video聽聽
[87]
i'm giving you tea shots of episode 2 of wilder聽
still with justin jeremiah this theme is them聽聽
[97]
starting over from ground zero getting聽
things on the ground it's been a pretty聽聽
[103]
wild few months of transition but it's聽
starting to feel like home like we live here
[116]
it's been a few whirlwind months聽
there's been so much change
[124]
it's definitely been a lot of hard work but聽
we knew when we made this move that we were聽聽
[129]
literally like digging up the root system聽
of our life and transplanting it it was not聽聽
[134]
going to be the kind of thing that was a聽
trial run or a test we were we were going
[146]
another cool thing about this is when聽
you watch roots in refuge it's it's聽聽
[150]
mainly jessica she does the mostly the media聽
stuff and jeremiah's kind of behind the scenes聽聽
[156]
really doing a lot on the farm now we get to see聽
more of jeremiah as well we're going to head down聽聽
[164]
to check out the pigs i got to check on the two聽
breeder mamas that should be having babies any聽聽
[171]
day these are the two uh pregnant mamas they're聽
the mangalita breed that we raise on our farm
[180]
she should have had her piglets already i don't聽
think anything's wrong i think she's just taking聽聽
[185]
longer than when we were anticipating i moved them聽
out here want to get them away from the other pigs聽聽
[190]
because i don't know how they're going to behave聽
with piglets i know that these two mamas won't聽聽
[196]
hurt each other or each other's kids i put them聽
on this particular space because this is actually聽聽
[201]
going to be the future site of a high tunnel聽
greenhouse so we built the the pen the exact聽聽
[207]
size of the greenhouse and we're letting them聽
tear the grass up and fertilize it a little bit聽聽
[214]
so we've got a small herd of goats聽
we downsized uh when we got here we聽聽
[219]
actually found someone to take a good portion聽
of our herd we've got three alpacas on the farm聽聽
[224]
uh they're really just novelty uh jessica has聽
always wanted alpacas and so we have them and聽聽
[231]
they're in the their older age and so they're聽
basically just retired we're not gonna breed them聽聽
[235]
or do anything with them they're just gonna live聽
out the rest of their days however many that is
[245]
you better quit
[248]
he's probably not going to stop that's one of the聽
cool things about this third person perspective i聽聽
[253]
mean you can watch jess's vlogs i mean you can聽
watch our vlogs but there's something special聽聽
[258]
about when we hand it over to a film crew and they聽
film us other people uh get in the show and you聽聽
[265]
get that bigger perspective that more holistic聽
perspective that is just priceless beyond that聽聽
[274]
what i really like about justin germain what聽
they're doing there is they're starting over聽聽
[277]
and they're starting over in a very regenerative聽
way here's an example with their meat chickens
[285]
now we have these birds on grass and we will聽
be moving them in these electric netting聽聽
[292]
fences and we'll move them every couple of days聽
to new grass they're powered by solar panels and聽聽
[298]
that makes them super mobile because we don't have聽
to worry about where we're going to plug them in聽聽
[303]
and obviously that's also energy efficient because聽
we're not having to pay for power by moving them聽聽
[308]
every day we are growing our birds they're able聽
to forage they're able to eat grass and insects聽聽
[313]
which makes for healthy happy birds and also we聽
are growing our grass so on a regenerative farm聽聽
[319]
your grass is one of your greatest commodities聽
your grass and your soil keeping those healthy聽聽
[324]
means that everything else on your聽
farm is going to be able to thrive聽聽
[328]
on that grass and in that soil and by moving these聽
birds every couple days they're fertilizing it and聽聽
[333]
the grass that they leave behind is going to be聽
super lush and something that's very different聽聽
[339]
than the normal homestead content is jess and聽
jeremy have this bigger dream and one of their聽聽
[346]
dreams is to confer convert this bring life i聽
shouldn't say convert just bring life to this聽聽
[351]
amazing little town here's a little glimpse聽
of their village and that town there's an old聽聽
[358]
downtown area there's so much history here and聽
i'm so wooed by it it's just so romantic to me聽聽
[365]
and the history i just feel like this whole聽
town is full of stories and they're just聽聽
[370]
waiting on somebody to care enough about them聽
to learn them and tell them and add to them
[388]
from the very beginning of wanting to come to this聽
area we would drive down this little downtown area聽聽
[393]
it's just a couple of blocks and we would see all聽
these empty stores and we would say well what it聽聽
[397]
what would it look like for these to be full of聽
life and we know we want to own a coffee shop聽聽
[403]
and a roasting company we know we want to own聽
a homesteading mercantile where people can come聽聽
[408]
but i don't just drive through here looking for聽
where our dreams gonna go i imagine this whole聽聽
[413]
place full of life and lots of dreams coming聽
true here all this this transition this change聽聽
[417]
it begs the questions well how do the ki how are聽
the kids handling it and jess of course has a聽聽
[425]
beautiful answer and perspective on that i think聽
probably the hardest part of our transition聽聽
[430]
is prioritizing being emotionally available聽
for our children because our children聽聽
[434]
are transitioning it's the largest change聽
they've ever gone through in their life聽聽
[439]
they amaze me with their resilience聽
even more they amaze me with how聽聽
[446]
holy they believe what we tell them and when聽
we say hey we're doing this because of legacy聽聽
[453]
and we're doing this because when you're adults聽
we're gonna have all the opportunity in the world聽聽
[458]
to give to you they believe us and they're just聽
in jess of course goes into that more and it's a聽聽
[467]
touching moment it's definitely one of my favorite聽
moments and i complimented the filmmakers on this聽聽
[474]
next moment it's this casual interview on the聽
swing it feels like we're right there with jessica聽聽
[481]
i think that's what many of us want from her is聽
and that she would say come have a seat at my聽聽
[487]
table you know so we're going to have a seat at聽
her table in this case we're going to sit right聽聽
[490]
behind her while she's swinging looking over聽
this we're going to look over this beautiful聽聽
[494]
pond together and she's going to cast a vision聽
for us every time i start thinking how are we聽聽
[499]
going to work this out how are we going to figure聽
this out i come and i sit right here in the swing聽聽
[503]
i don't have to figure out how to work it out i聽
just have to believe that it's going to be okay聽聽
[507]
and these dreams that are put in our heart聽
and these things that we feel passionate about聽聽
[513]
i just have to live my life as if聽
they're important and as if they're聽聽
[517]
blessed and as if it is something that we're聽
supposed to do and keep first things first
[524]
you know the tree in the pond that's really聽
not up to me to make that kind of thing聽聽
[529]
happen and i feel like all of the dreams聽
that we have kind of fall in that category聽聽
[534]
building this farm and our learning center聽
and our reach and all the teaching we want聽聽
[540]
to do it's just the very same as this tree聽
in this pond i don't have to figure out how聽聽
[544]
that stuff is going to happen i just have聽
to take care of what's right in front of me
[550]
so that's just a little bit a little bit of wilder聽
still the new episodes 22 minutes in link that's聽聽
[557]
the second one so there's a first one too and聽
they're both now streaming on abundance plus聽聽
[563]
please go there and enjoy it's abundanceplus.com聽
i'll leave the link in the description enjoy
