[0]
imagine you're about to embark on a high
[2]
seas adventure you've got your map laid
[5]
out and it's time to chart your course
[7]
now to make a decision do you stay close
[10]
to the safety of shore or do you set out
[12]
for deeper waters with the hope of
[14]
making a better time when it comes to
[16]
investing the balance between safety and
[18]
strong returns can feel a lot like
[21]
navigating choppy ocean waters right now
[24]
the stock market is at an all-time high
[26]
while most savings accounts are paying
[28]
less than inflation the destination is
[31]
clear to have our money make more money
[33]
but what's the best path to get there
[35]
what kind of return should you expect
[38]
from each option and how risky are they
[40]
if you don't know it's time to grab your
[42]
Atlas and sextant and start charting a
[45]
course to your financial goals
[49]
[Music]
[54]
the ocean of investing is huge while
[58]
we'd love to discuss everything from
[60]
cryptocurrency to real estate today
[63]
we're exploring investments that are
[64]
both popular and easily accessible to
[67]
the average deck swab let's start by
[69]
looking at the safest calmest course for
[72]
your investment journey Exhibit A the
[74]
savings account safe check liquid check
[77]
but with the average u.s. savings
[79]
account only paying 0.09 percent
[81]
interest you can start to feel like you
[84]
left the anchor down some banks offer
[86]
high-yield savings accounts paying one
[88]
to two percent or more
[90]
but with inflation hovering around 1.6
[92]
percent you don't feel like sailing into
[94]
the wind so while this might be a great
[97]
place to park your rainy day money it's
[99]
not ideal for long-term goals for a goal
[102]
a few years out you could look at a
[104]
certificate of deposit or series I
[106]
savings bond savings bonds currently pay
[109]
a guaranteed 1.9 percent interest and
[112]
can be bought directly from the
[114]
government at Treasury direct.org you
[117]
can start with as little as $25 and save
[119]
up to $10,000 per year but be warned
[123]
that you will be penalized if you
[125]
withdraw your money before one year has
[127]
passed certificates of deposit or CDs
[130]
are issued by a bank or credit union and
[132]
can pay even more between 1 and 3% the
[135]
catch is that there's a minimum deposit
[137]
of at least a few thousand dollars and
[139]
you can't touch your money for a fixed
[142]
period of time between one and five
[144]
years but as long as the bank or
[146]
government sticks around you can expect
[148]
to get your money back with promised
[150]
interest if you're saving up for a big
[152]
purchase like the down payment on a
[154]
house in a few years savings bonds or a
[156]
CD might fit the bill I've asked me
[159]
hearties it's time to head out with open
[161]
waters of public markets that means
[165]
publicly traded investments that don't
[167]
come with guaranteed returns or outcomes
[169]
make sure you've got some life rafts on
[172]
board
[172]
unlike savings bonds Treasury municipal
[175]
and corporate bond funds are traded on
[178]
public exchanges and since supply and
[181]
demand affect their value they have no
[183]
guaranteed return
[184]
one popular bond fund with a little of
[187]
everything has averaged three point six
[189]
eight percent annual growth for the last
[191]
ten years and like a stock fund returns
[194]
fluctuate and can even be occasionally
[197]
negative when bond prices fall think of
[200]
bond funds as a middle ground between
[202]
guaranteed investments and risky ones
[204]
like stocks often they're available to
[206]
you right alongside stock funds through
[208]
a 401k at work or inside an IRA these
[212]
can be especially useful for people who
[214]
are older and can't risk their whole
[216]
nest egg to a stock market crash or they
[219]
might be a great fit if you're saving
[221]
for something in a 5 to 10 year window
[223]
finally let's look way out in deep
[226]
waters the stock market with 16 major
[229]
stock exchanges in the world dozens of
[231]
industries and thousands of companies
[233]
traded across the globe it can all be a
[235]
little overwhelming but a highly popular
[238]
North Star for stock investing is the
[240]
S&P 500 composite index which tracks how
[243]
the largest 500 corporations in America
[246]
are doing over the last 90 years the S&P
[249]
has averaged a growth of nine point
[251]
eight percent per year if you wanted
[254]
your returns to track the S&P you could
[256]
just invest in an S&P 500 index fund
[259]
side note this is why we here at two
[262]
cents use a seven or eight percent
[264]
growth rate whenever we run the numbers
[266]
for long-term investing goals we assume
[269]
a little less than that 90 year average
[271]
with that growth rate why isn't everyone
[274]
hopping aboard
[275]
well the S&P almost never has a single
[278]
year return between five and ten percent
[280]
it's only happened twice since 1928
[283]
if you hopped aboard in January 2018
[286]
you'd have lost six point two four
[289]
percent by the end of the year one year
[291]
before you'd be up nineteen point four
[293]
two percent 2011 had a zero percent
[296]
return and in 2008 it infamously fell
[299]
thirty eight point four nine percent
[302]
whoo that's enough to make anyone
[304]
seasick
[305]
so short term investing with stocks can
[308]
leave you high and dry and is not
[310]
recommended by most experts but if
[313]
you're able to weather the storms
[315]
stay calm during dips and dives over the
[317]
next 10 years or more they may be just
[320]
the ticket so what's the best investment
[323]
it depends
[324]
earning 1 to 4 percent on money that
[327]
needs a safe and steady harbor is
[329]
perfectly appropriate or if you're
[331]
willing to take more risk and invest for
[333]
the long term five to ten percent is
[335]
pretty reasonable for 10 years or more
[337]
while it's possible to do even better
[340]
than this odds are that some extra risks
[343]
or effort will be expected and remember
[345]
to diversify so no single investment can
[349]
save their whole fleet align your
[351]
investments with the right goal hoist
[353]
your sails and you'll stay afloat even
[356]
when seas get stormy and that's our two
[358]
cents thanks to our patrons for keeping
[361]
two cents financially healthy click the
