His headmaster told him he would either聽
end up in prison or become a millionaire.
聽
[5]
He was never the one to shine bright in academics,聽
especially while battling dyslexia and ADHD.聽聽
[12]
His determination to succeed and聽
his will to open doors to diverse聽聽
[16]
industries paved his way to becoming a global聽
icon with a net worth of USD 5.7 Billion.
聽
[24]
At the age of 70, he flew into space on board聽
Virgin Galactic Unity 22, a suborbital test flight聽聽
[32]
for his very own spaceflight company Virgin聽
Galactic and became the third oldest person聽聽
[39]
to fly into space. So, hold on tight we are about聽
to take off to the world of Richard Branson.
聽
[46]
Three, two, one (insert sound聽
of a rocket taking off)
聽
[50]
And make sure to stick around until聽
the end of the video, will tell you聽聽
[54]
how one lucky winner can win a book of聽
Richard Branson of your choice.
聽
[60]
From a young age itself, Richard Branson set聽
his eyes on becoming an entrepreneur. He
聽
[65]
achieved his dreams at the age of 16 with his聽
first business venture, a magazine called Student.聽聽
[73]
His ideas for entrepreneurship ran wild and聽
ran free. He was able to see opportunities聽聽
[78]
where many sees none. Being dyslexic never聽
restrained him from striving for growth.聽聽
[84]
His energy and hunger for success go unmatched.聽
His dyslexia stood no chance against him.聽聽
[92]
It was his determination that resulted聽
in him being placed in the Time聽聽
[96]
100 Most Influential People in the World.
If anyone ever puts you down for having dyslexia,聽聽
[103]
don t believe them. Being dyslexic can be a big聽
advantage, and it has certainly helped me.
聽
[110]
Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson was born聽
in London, in the year 1950 to Eve Branson and聽聽
[117]
Edward James Branson. His performance at school聽
was very poor. He was struggling to keep up.聽聽
[124]
However, his parents were supportive聽
of his learning difficulty.聽聽
[128]
He faced ups and downs in school especially since聽
many were not educated about dyslexia, hence they聽聽
[135]
were unable to recognize and guide him through聽
his learning disability. Instead, his teachers聽聽
[141]
simply ruled him out as lazy, couldn t keep up,聽
and didn t fit in. It was much later in life when聽聽
[148]
he found out that he suffered from Dyslexia. He聽
continued his education until the age of sixteen聽聽
[155]
and voluntarily dropped out. He then invested his聽
time in growing Christmas trees and budgies in an聽聽
[161]
attempt at selling to earn a few extra bucks.
By 1969, Richard Branson s net worth was estimated聽聽
[170]
at 50,000. While maintaining Student, he聽
worked on a mail-order record business.聽聽
[176]
He knew and understood the benefit聽
of handling the two hand in hand,聽聽
[181]
he used the magazine as a source of advertising聽
popular albums. He even interviewed many prominent聽聽
[187]
figures back in the 1960s including Mike Jagger.聽
This connection between the two investments drove聽聽
[194]
his sales through the roof and paved the way for聽
the opening of his record shop on Oxford Street,聽聽
[200]
London. Virgin Records was a huge success and soon聽
became globally known. In no time the roads ahead聽聽
[207]
of him cleared and he went on to become the聽
world s largest independent record label.
聽
[213]
He found the stepping stones to success It聽
was one entrepreneurial idea after another.聽聽
[219]
Before he knew it, he was cooking up a recipe聽
to become an international business tycoon.
聽
[225]
What came next for Richard Branson? While聽
on a trip to Puerto Rico and having his聽聽
[230]
flight cancelled, he decided to charter his聽
flight and offered a trip to the rest of the聽聽
[234]
stranded passengers. This was the beginning of聽
Virgin Atlantic, his airline company. He later聽聽
[241]
invested in Virgin Cargo and Virgin Holidays.聽
In his late 20s he invested in Necker Island,聽聽
[248]
located about 100 miles east of Puerto Rico, which聽
he purchased in the year 1979 for just $180,000,聽聽
[258]
he spent over $10 million for renovations聽
when he transformed it into a luxury resort.聽聽
[264]
This is a 74-acre island with white sandy聽
beaches and spectacular wildlife. This island was聽聽
[271]
uninhabited until Richard Branson turned聽
it into an exclusive luxury resort.
聽
[277]
In the early 1990s, his luck took a break.聽
Financial troubles multiplied by 1992.聽聽
[285]
The company was having trouble staying afloat. To聽
keep his airline company stable he decided to end聽聽
[291]
something very dear to his heart. He ended the聽
chapter of Virgin Records by selling it to EMI.聽聽
[298]
This time was very traumatic for Branson. He聽
valued Virgin Records deeply as it was the聽聽
[303]
initial step to the success of the Virgin Empire聽
he created. The path to success is a learning聽聽
[310]
process. There must be ups and downs. One must聽
fall and get up. It will always be unpredictable.聽聽
[317]
Along with the sale of Virgin Records, a few of聽
Richard Branson s other ventures came crumbling聽聽
[322]
down and collapsed. Virgin Cosmetics, Virgin聽
Brides, Virgin Publishing, Virgin Clothing,聽聽
[329]
and Virgin Cola. He admits that his greatest聽
failure was Virgin Cola and not knocking Coca-Cola聽聽
[336]
off their pedestal . Even though this was a聽
mentally challenging period for Richard Branson,聽聽
[341]
he still vividly saw opportunities that no聽
one else saw at first glance. The global聽聽
[347]
icon re-entered with new businesses including聽
Virgin Radio, Virgin Money, Virgin Mobile,聽聽
[354]
Virgin Active, Virgin Trains and many more.
"I suppose the secret to bouncing back is not聽聽
[360]
only to be unafraid of failures but to use聽
them as motivational and learning tools.聽聽
[366]
There's nothing wrong with making mistakes as聽
long as you don't make the same ones repeatedly."聽聽
[372]
Never did he hide from failure, instead he聽
found learning opportunities in his thirst for聽聽
[377]
achievement. This quality in him is what made him聽
iconic. His surprising attitude towards failure聽聽
[385]
is what makes him Richard Branson.
After the setback, he soon began pushing through聽聽
[391]
in search of clear skies. Searching for the聽
sweet smell of success by removing obstacles and聽聽
[398]
jumping hurdles and racing to the very top.聽
He reached so far and beyond and grabbed at聽聽
[403]
an opportunity like no other Space Tourism.
Virgin Galactic, taking paying passengers to聽聽
[410]
suborbital outer space. This business venture is聽
another clear example of how this global icon is聽聽
[418]
the risk-taker we could never be. In 2014, the聽
first test flight destroyed the original ship聽聽
[425]
but He has a dream of exploring space and聽
wants to include as many individuals as he can聽聽
[432]
to bring along for the ride among the stars.
"I was once a kid with a dream looking up to the聽聽
[438]
stars, and now I m an adult in a spaceship聽
looking back to our beautiful Earth."
聽
[444]
Richard Branson, this iconic business聽
magnate, how did someone suffering from聽聽
[449]
dyslexia achieve so much in life? What聽
is his secret to riding high and above?
聽
[456]
Screw it. Let s do it. Have an idea, have a聽
dream, and work for it. Strive for its success.聽聽
[464]
Make it happen. Also, in one of his books, Branson聽
confirmed that even though Winston Churchill聽聽
[470]
and John F. Kennedy's oratory skills were lauded,聽
their achievements were far greater. Indeed,聽聽
[476]
Branson believes that these great men were also聽
great listeners. Listening, in Branson's opinion,聽聽
[483]
is a woefully undervalued skill and the hallmark聽
of many excellent leaders. The untold secret of聽聽
[490]
business success is the ability to truly listen.聽
Having grown up with dyslexia, I learned very聽聽
[497]
early in life that if I wanted to take anything in聽
then I had to force myself to listen intently.
聽
[504]
Sometimes, if you see an amazing opportunity, but聽
there is a stubborn obstacle in the way, you have聽聽
[509]
to think creatively to get around it. There is聽
no doubt he is the ultimate daredevil in today聽聽
[515]
s world. In 1986, he aimed to achieve the fastest聽
Atlantic crossing by ship in his Virgin Atlantic聽聽
[523]
Challenger II. He beat the record by two hours.聽
In 1991, he broke the record for crossing the聽聽
[530]
Pacific from Japan to Arctic Canada in a hot air聽
balloon. In 2004, he was able to set a record for聽聽
[538]
the fastest crossing of the English Channel from聽
England to France in an amphibious vehicle.
聽
[545]
He is an inventor, an author and聽
an adventurer. The founder of the聽聽
[549]
Virgin Group now owns more than 400 companies in聽
multiple industries. He opened multiple new doors聽聽
[557]
when one closed on him. He accepted his聽
disability and turned it into a superpower.
