[0]
it's your student bringing in scholarship聽 money and now you're wondering oh gosh are we聽聽
[4]
gonna have to pay taxes on this maybe you're just聽 wondering do we have to pay taxes on scholarships聽聽
[10]
or what are the scholarship tax rules well in this聽 quick video we're going to cover all of that and聽聽
[16]
so much more including how to report scholarships聽 on taxes tax deductions and towards the end of聽聽
[23]
this video i'm going to give you a tip where if聽 your student is getting to the point where they聽聽
[27]
might have to pay taxes how they can reduce them聽 now if you haven't already make sure that you聽聽
[31]
click subscribe because this is just one of many聽 videos i'm releasing on how to secure a debt-free聽聽
[38]
degree for your family hello my name is jocelyn聽 pearson founder of the scholarship system where we聽聽
[43]
redefine paying for college so that we can help聽 families avoid student loan debt when sending聽聽
[47]
their students through college in fact our primary聽 weapon against student loan debt is scholarships聽聽
[54]
now i have to start off with my own story for聽 this video because i want to show you that聽聽
[59]
i have been through almost all of these scenarios聽 so i actually received six figures in scholarships聽聽
[65]
every single year in college i received more and聽 more to the point where the amount that i received聽聽
[72]
not only covered the bill that the university聽 had on my account but actually i received an聽聽
[78]
overage check every semester which means that聽 they cut me a check for the remaining amount聽聽
[82]
of money so i had extra money left over so this聽 is a pretty good situation and this is what we聽聽
[88]
want your student to get to right we want them to聽 get to where they don't have to worry about where聽聽
[94]
the next payment is going to come from they can聽 actually focus on their degree and their future聽聽
[100]
now if you are interested in learning how i got to聽 six figures where i found legitimate scholarships聽聽
[105]
that actually helped pay for my education you聽 can click the link below to sign up for a free聽聽
[111]
training that i'm offering called the six steps聽 to securing scholarships i'll remind you towards聽聽
[116]
the end of the video as well now i actually also聽 wanted to pull our families in the scholarship聽聽
[121]
system about whether or not they paid taxes on聽 any kind of scholarships now the majority of them聽聽
[127]
said no a few of them said we had to report聽 them of course but we didn't end up paying and聽聽
[132]
a few people did say yes so i want to explain what聽 you'd have to pay when you don't and how to avoid聽聽
[140]
it taxes on scholarships are really based on how聽 the money is used so your student does not have to聽聽
[146]
pay taxes on college scholarships if the money is聽 used on qualified educational expenses so this is聽聽
[154]
based on the irs definition you and i would surely聽 disagree with what is required for an education聽聽
[161]
but this includes things like tuition fees books聽 any kind of equipment and supplies that are listed聽聽
[168]
for the courses so anything that is very clearly聽 on that bill that is required for the course聽聽
[174]
work now there's one big expense though that聽 can be on that bill that unfortunately is under聽聽
[181]
the taxable scholarship funds and that is any聽 scholarship funds used for room and board this聽聽
[187]
is a huge hit when it comes to the bill because聽 room and board can be a huge amount of that bill聽聽
[194]
they also don't consider insurances聽 medical costs transportation utilities聽聽
[201]
any kind of supplies that are not required聽 for a course or any kind of living expenses聽聽
[206]
as a qualified education expense therefore any聽 of those items would require claiming them or聽聽
[212]
paying taxes on them if that's what they are for聽 similarly any money that's spent on sports does聽聽
[218]
not count as uh non-taxable so unless the sport聽 is part of an actual course which is can happen聽聽
[227]
there are golf classes etc unless the sport聽 is actually a course that they're enrolled in聽聽
[232]
then those expenses related to sports are not聽 tax-exempt either now another way that scholarship聽聽
[239]
committees sometimes award money or actually聽 even universities sometimes give money this way聽聽
[245]
is by providing it as a stipend for work聽 in fact actually as a student i had a few聽聽
[252]
jobs through the university whether it was as a ta聽 or a teacher's assistant or a summer job where we聽聽
[258]
were working as orientation leaders guiding聽 incoming freshmen throughout the university聽聽
[264]
those jobs often paid me as a stipend amount聽 versus an hourly wage or something like that聽聽
[271]
now unfortunately stipends are considered income聽 and therefore a student would receive say a w-2聽聽
[278]
that they would have to claim on taxes so stipends聽 are non-uh tax-exempt either so they are taxable聽聽
[286]
if it is worded as a stipend or if it is worded聽 as earned income they're going to get a w-2 that聽聽
[292]
they do have to claim on their taxes now some of聽 you might be thinking well is there a tax credit聽聽
[297]
that we can use to decrease this chances of this聽 the answer is not necessarily a scholarship tax聽聽
[304]
credit but there are education tax credits and if聽 you'd like to see a video explaining what those聽聽
[309]
education tax credits are comment below in fact聽 we have a full lesson on this for our members聽聽
[314]
and one of our members went through a 30-minute聽 lesson and saved over 2 000 on taxes the following聽聽
[321]
year because of it so these education tax credits聽 can be a huge help for families so comment below聽聽
[326]
and just say tax credit video please and i聽 will put that on the list the thing with these聽聽
[332]
education tax credits is that they cannot be used聽 on expenses that were paid for by scholarships聽聽
[338]
so in fact actually myself because i had a free聽 ride i had enough scholarship money to cover my聽聽
[343]
entire bill we never got to use these tax credits聽 because we didn't technically pay out of pocket聽聽
[348]
for anything for my education which again is a聽 situation that i hope that your family gets to聽聽
[353]
taxes or not ultimately it's always best to not聽 have to borrow for paying for college right so聽聽
[360]
how are these scholarships submitted when it comes聽 to taxes so the way this works is the university聽聽
[365]
will give you your student a 1098 t form this is聽 where your student will receive the total amount聽聽
[373]
of expenses that that the university charged and聽 then the difference between that and the money聽聽
[380]
that they receive so you'll see one section with聽 the expenses one section with the money received聽聽
[385]
and then that difference if they received more聽 money than the expenses then that would be what聽聽
[391]
would count towards taxes now sometimes we see聽 scholarships send money directly to a student聽聽
[398]
now this is actually a little bit of a gray area聽 where they can decide if they want to submit a聽聽
[404]
1099 form or not but i've seen in the past where聽 they will submit a 1099 miscellaneous form that聽聽
[412]
might be given to your student and if that's the聽 case then you do want to enter it or at least聽聽
[416]
talk to your cpa and see if you need to enter it聽 now again if they do give money directly to the聽聽
[420]
student and it is earned if it is something that聽 is given in exchange for something for labor for聽聽
[427]
work then actually your student should get a w-2聽 for that and claim that on the taxes so those are聽聽
[434]
the three forms that you could be looking at a聽 1098-t a 1099 miscellaneous or a w-2 depending on聽聽
[444]
what the money is used for how it's given to the聽 student and whether or not they delivered any kind聽聽
[450]
of services or labor in exchange for it now i want聽 to give a quick tip here so as i said earlier in聽聽
[456]
my story i did receive enough money to where i had聽 an excess amount that said i never ever paid taxes聽聽
[464]
but i also did work part-time jobs so i think聽 that if i looked at my taxes from back then聽聽
[472]
it's probably that it averaged out to where the聽 money that i would have received back from the聽聽
[478]
the part-time work that i was doing maybe that聽 compensated for any kind of excess amount it聽聽
[483]
is not a huge amount of taxes i again like i聽 said i never had to pay anything and i got to聽聽
[488]
where i had six figures and overage checks every聽 single semester even though we followed all the聽聽
[493]
rules we legally submitted taxes every single聽 year so an idea here might be if your student聽聽
[499]
does get to the point where they may have to pay聽 taxes where they are getting an overage check聽聽
[503]
congratulations by the way uh if they do get to聽 that situation then maybe and a good idea would聽聽
[509]
be to get a part-time job and that way that can聽 kind of compensate for any kind of overage checks聽聽
[514]
that they'd have to pay taxes on it's proven聽 that students who have part-time jobs during聽聽
[520]
college do better anyway so this is actually a聽 huge life skill a huge opportunity and it can聽聽
[525]
give them a chance to save a chunk of change for聽 when they graduate maybe to buy a rental property聽聽
[530]
or whatever it is that they want to pursue with聽 that money so that is a quick tip on how we can聽聽
[537]
reduce the amount that we might end up having聽 to pay if we are sitting in that situation聽聽
[542]
so the question is is it worth dealing聽 with scholarships and taxes is it worth聽聽
[546]
applying to scholarships if they聽 fall into these taxable categories聽聽
[552]
in my opinion the answer is of course it聽 is because the thing is ultimately there聽聽
[557]
is going to be a way larger expense if they聽 have to borrow student debt to pay for college聽聽
[563]
when we're talking about interest when we're聽 talking about late payments when we're talking聽聽
[566]
about just the fact that it takes a student on聽 average 21 years to pay off student loan debt聽聽
[572]
it is a no-brainer that regardless of taxes your聽 student should be pursuing scholarships that is聽聽
[580]
absolutely the better course rather than聽 worrying about whether or not it's worth聽聽
[584]
it now don't forget to comment below if you want聽 that video on education tax credits and also again聽聽
