[3]
Have you ever wondered what the state spends the most on welfare?
[6]
I'm gonna let you know right now. What is going on everyone?
[10]
Welcome back the world according to Briggs
[12]
let's take a look at the welfare system and how much is spent on it welfare
[16]
isn't what most people think it isn't a system where money is given
[19]
out to people that are too lazy to work don't get me wrong not saying there
[23]
aren't people gaming the system and doing just that there's a lot of
[27]
them it's a flaw in the system that needs to be fixed
[30]
it's fraud in my opinion public welfare includes cash assistance paid to needy
[34]
persons through a variety of different programs now
[37]
i'm a firm believer in these programs sometimes people need a little help
[41]
that's just a fact of life that's what these programs are
[44]
supposed to do give you a little help for a little while not to live off of it
[48]
in the us we spend more than 600 billion on public
[52]
assistance annually that's according to the u.s
[54]
census bureau's 2018 annual survey of state and local
[58]
governments finances this list is about the state spending
[62]
the most per capita keep in mind we are ranking the public
[65]
welfare per capita spending not the total amount spent per welfare
[69]
recipient you may look at the number i give and think
[72]
well that's not much annually just keep in mind 80
[75]
of the state's residents don't get any benefits this is just like maybe
[79]
10 to 20 of the population are receiving benefits so
[82]
kind of a weird number but you get it as we go along alright let's see what we
[86]
got number 10 kentucky kentucky has been
[91]
broke for many years they have some incredibly beautiful towns they just
[95]
have a whole bunch of bad neighborhoods in the city and far too many people in
[99]
rural areas that aren't able to make ends meet this of course gives you a
[102]
high poverty rate the poverty rate in kentucky is 16.7
[106]
the national average is 11.8 currently now if you watch this year from now
[111]
because the pandemic when next year's numbers come out it might be a lot
[114]
higher but right now it's 16.7 percent in kentucky and 11.8
[119]
nationally the welfare spending per capita is 2517.
[124]
the total public welfare expenditure in kentucky is 11.2
[128]
billion dollars number nine oregon who didn't see this one coming
[134]
oregon has a high cost of living and a homeless problem
[137]
that they dump millions and millions of dollars into every single year now i'm
[141]
not slamming the homeless they are fellow americans that have been
[144]
dealt an incredibly crappy hand and we have to try and get them back on
[147]
their feet when we can some of them as you know if you know anything about
[150]
the homeless are just kind of beyond help at some point
[154]
oregon is a very desirable place to live maybe
[157]
a little less than a couple years back but it has been a move to hotspot for a
[161]
very long time this created a lot of extra problems we didn't already have
[165]
like housing shortage affordable housing shortage and a high cost living
[169]
all of the problems here in portland and in some of our rural communities gets us
[173]
on this list welfare spending per capita is 2520
[178]
total public welfare expenditure is 10.4 billion dollars
[183]
number eight maine maine is one of the states that spend the most on welfare
[187]
per capita however it's among the top 15 states
[190]
with the lowest total public welfare expenditure
[192]
that is because they don't have many people 1.3 million in the whole state
[196]
there's neighborhoods in new york that have more than that they do have one of
[199]
the oldest populations in the country and this leads to a lot of older folks
[203]
needing little help and that's fine it's what these programs were designed for
[206]
i was a little alarmed though when i read how much viagra was being
[210]
prescribed in maine and then you factor in that it's an older crop what
[213]
is going on in maine that they need that much viagra
[216]
welfare spending per capita is 2 530 the total public welfare expenditure is
[222]
3.3 billion dollars in maine number seven
[228]
delaware delaware is the first state if you ever visit wilmington delaware
[232]
you'll see the first city of suckage yeah i'll show myself out most of the
[243]
people in delaware live in wilmington this is not a great city by any stretch
[248]
of the imagination it is wrecked with crime and poverty
[251]
it's funny how those two always go together crime and poverty
[255]
it's never like crime and prosperity you know i mean unless
[258]
you're a very successful criminal then yeah maybe but still
[261]
moving on the per capita spending in delaware is among the highest but the
[265]
state's total welfare expenditure is the seventh lowest in the nation the welfare
[269]
spending per capita is two thousand five hundred and forty four dollars
[273]
in delaware the total public welfare expenditure is two point
[276]
four five billion dollars yeah that's not bad when you consider
[280]
you know how much they're spending per capita
[284]
number six new mexico it's not a surprise that new mexico is one of the
[288]
states that spends the most on welfare it has the third highest poverty rate in
[292]
the nation at 18.2 percent that believe it or not folks is an
[296]
improvement they had the highest poverty rate
[299]
a few years back when they took the top spot from mississippi in the early 2010s
[304]
this is also not a great state to have any money in
[307]
because they have a high property crime rate and if you buy anything
[310]
someone's eventually gonna take it from your porch or your backyard or
[314]
whatever welfare spending per capita in new mexico
[318]
is two thousand seven hundred and forty one dollars
[321]
the total public welfare expenditure is 5.72 billion
[326]
number five minnesota the gopher state has about six million residents and they
[330]
have been in the news a lot in the last few months
[333]
and not for good stuff either i was just there in july it was nice nice weather
[337]
nice scenery a little person gave me the finger on a bridge
[340]
you know a good time minnesota is a good sized state with one major city
[344]
minneapolis stop typing madison is a nice city
[347]
it's just not a big city most of the welfare dollars land in minneapolis
[352]
as you probably already figured out minnesota is among the top five states
[356]
that spend the most on welfare per capita
[358]
that's obvious because they're number five on this list but it's among the top
[362]
15 highest in total public welfare
[365]
expenditure so yeah it's another one those that's kind of weird
[368]
the welfare spending per capita in minnesota is two thousand
[371]
eight hundred and five dollars and the total public welfare expenditure
[375]
is 15.6 billion dollars number four vermont i bet nobody saw
[382]
this one coming i mean with a world-class bed and breakfast
[384]
scene vermont has how could anyone be out of a job i just don't understand
[388]
it's just one of those things i don't understand sort of like the c
[392]
and the ce on a calculator i don't know what's
[394]
going on there if you're down on your luck and need some help vermont is
[398]
probably one of the best states to help although vermont's welfare spending per
[402]
capita is high its total welfare spending is very low
[405]
and as we've already learned that has a lot to do with its low population
[409]
the welfare spending per capita in vermont is 2
[413]
842 and the total public welfare expenditure is 1.7 billion
[419]
yeah not terrible on the overall thing but
[422]
they're on the list number three massachusetts the amount of people
[427]
living in poverty is actually below the national
[429]
average in massachusetts it's only 10.1 percent that's not bad but they still
[434]
make it on this list in part because they have such a high
[436]
cost living and pretty much their two major cities boston and hartford
[440]
this causes a lot of struggling to get by and some people end up on the streets
[445]
how many of you started typing out an angry message already
[448]
because i said hartford was in massachusetts it's not it's in
[451]
connecticut love doing that to people boston and
[454]
springfield is where 90 of those welfare dollars end up it's
[458]
expensive to live in both those cities but boston is crazy
[462]
expensive welfare spending per capita is two
[465]
thousand nine hundred and eleven dollars and the total public welfare expenditure
[469]
is nineteen point nine billion dollars yeah that's a lot of money
[475]
number two alaska at number two we have the frontier state alaska
[480]
this state is weird in so many ways i can't stop to tell you about them
[483]
because that would be a four hour video let's
[486]
just stick with the weirdness that applies to this video
[488]
alaska is the largest state by area but they're the 48th by population
[493]
that's kind of weird there's a lot of open land in this state and there's also
[496]
a lot of people that need help making ends meet they also get a check
[499]
every year just for being a resident of the state yeah it's kind of weird it's
[502]
not a welfare thing it's basically mineral royalties they get a
[505]
cut of because alaska is one of the least populous states its total public
[509]
welfare spending is the sixth lowest in the nation even
[512]
though their spending per capita is the second highest welfare spending
[516]
per capita in alaska is 3 thousand and twenty
[520]
dollars the total public welfare expenditure is
[523]
2.2 billion dollars and number one new york
[529]
this one should be no surprise to anyone that's lived in or around new york state
[533]
or new york city for that matter the cost of living in new york city is
[537]
crazy there's no government program that can help you survive the cost of
[541]
living in new york city other than the state lottery
[544]
it's not just new york city have any of you been to buffalo in the last decade
[548]
buffalo's starting to be brought up in the same conversations with detroit and
[551]
st louis that's not great company this entire state seems to need a little help
[555]
that's part of the reason this state's having a major
[558]
exodus right now people are flooding out of new york state california they have
[562]
it bad too but california still has more people coming
[565]
in new york city is running a hard deficit considering the fact that
[569]
residents need to make over a hundred thousand dollars to live
[572]
comfortably in new york city it's no surprise that the state's public
[575]
welfare expenditure is so high new york city has the fifth highest cost
[579]
living in the country the welfare spending per capita is 3 310
[585]
and the total public welfare expenditure is 19.9
[589]
billion dollars that's a lot of money going out to keep
[592]
people fed and taken care of and rent paid and all that other stuff that goes
[596]
in this thing now like i said at the beginning i'm not
[598]
hating on anyone for any situation they're in i'm just giving you the
[601]
numbers here of each one of these states people need a little help and there's no
[606]
shame in that happens to a lot of people
