I grabbed my clothes
[2]
took some money that I had saved
[4]
and I just thought
[6]
that I should leave
[8]
For the whole night, I was thinking
[10]
about how long would I be able to
[12]
survive with these 300 Rs
[14]
And will my life end when
[16]
this money gets exhausted
[18]
They explained to me that
[20]
I have to go door to door
[22]
and sell things
[24]
This door that got shut on me
[26]
had told me where I actually stand
[28]
It broke my confidence
[30]
At that time, being alive
[32]
was the most important thing
[35]
Here I am
[37]
standing in front of you
[39]
a successful entrepreneur
[41]
with a company that clocked
[43]
a turnover of approximately
[45]
15 Crores last year
[56]
If you really want to reach the pinnacle of success
[59]
then you need to try again & again
[62]
Just like that, today
[64]
I am standing in front of you
[68]
and narrating my story
[70]
sharing my journey
[73]
A journey where one door
[75]
that got slammed
[77]
right on my face
[79]
at the age of 15
[81]
opened doors of success for me
[84]
Hi, I am Chinu Kala
[86]
founder of Rubans Accessories
[88]
India's most loved jewellery brand
[91]
An entrepreneur who is
[93]
not an IIM Graduate
[95]
Let alone IIM, I do not
[97]
have a masters degree itself
[100]
Actually
[102]
I was not even able to
[104]
complete my basic education
[106]
But still, here I am
[108]
standing in front of you
[111]
A successful entrepreneur
[113]
with a company that
[115]
clocked a turnover of
[117]
approximately 15 Crores
[119]
last year
[120]
I was able to reach here
[122]
because I was
[124]
adamant to succeed
[127]
I was really stubborn
[129]
to become successful
[132]
And that stubbornness
[134]
took me along
[136]
I belong to Mumbai
[138]
Born and bought up in Mumbai only
[140]
I belong to a typical middle-class family
[142]
Maa, Papa, and Siblings
[144]
This was my world
[147]
My mom used to work abroad
[149]
so she used to be out mostly
[151]
We were mostly raised by my father
[154]
One day
[156]
when I was just 15
[158]
me and my father
[160]
ended up having a really
[162]
heated argument, and
[164]
he scolded me, saying
[166]
that if you can't listen to me
[168]
and want to do everything on your own
[170]
then you don't need to live in my house
[172]
And I also got filled with rage
[174]
and decided to leave the house
[177]
and I did it
[180]
Got my clothes
[182]
and took some 300 Rs that I had saved
[184]
and I decided to leave the house
[187]
And, I came down the building
[191]
and stood there for more than 2 hours
[194]
I was confused that what should I do now
[198]
But, I was so stubborn
[201]
that I had decided not to go back
[205]
Hence, I left
[208]
I didn't even think about that
[210]
where would I live & what would I eat
[213]
You know when we are kids
[216]
then most of our basic needs
[218]
are taken care by our parents
[220]
We don't even realize that
[223]
someone is working hard
[225]
to take care of our life
[227]
And you need money for everything
[230]
I was clueless about everything
[234]
But I had this hazy memory that
[236]
I had seen some people sit at
[238]
Bombay Central Station
[241]
I caught a train and went there
[245]
By then, it was already night
[247]
I just had a vada pav at night
[251]
And like other people there
[255]
I put my bag under my head
[258]
and lied down
[260]
But I couldn't sleep
[262]
For the whole night, I contemplated
[265]
that how long would I survive like this
[269]
And will my life end
[271]
with there 300 Rupees
[274]
This night was really tough
[277]
and scary for me
[280]
By the morning, I was crying
[284]
I didn't know
[286]
what to do or
[288]
where to go
[290]
or whom to ask for help
[292]
During this, a kind woman approached me
[294]
She asked me why I was crying
[298]
After I told her my story
[301]
even she couldn't see my condition
[304]
And she suggested me
[306]
something about door to door sales
[309]
And I remember that
[311]
she told me that
[313]
I would be able to get a daily commission
[315]
And I just sat there
[320]
I did nothing but just sat there the whole day
[326]
But, it was a question of survival
[328]
and I didn't have any other plan
[331]
So, the next day I reached that office
[333]
to get some work
[336]
They explained to me that I have to
[338]
go from door to door and
[340]
sell some items, like
[342]
Knives, coasters
[344]
and other basic kitchen equipment
[346]
stuff like that
[347]
I thought that this is easy
[349]
and I would be able to do it
[352]
I also interacted with some people
[355]
and made arrangement for
[358]
my stay at a dormitory
[361]
To be honest, at that time
[365]
Nothing seemed more important
[367]
to me than survival
[369]
Hence, I didn't even think
[372]
if I am safe or not
[376]
I just stood up and went to work
[379]
It was my first day
[381]
I took my bag with all the stuff and started
[386]
I rang the doorbell of the first house
[388]
A woman came out
[391]
Before I could've spoken anything
[393]
she saw those items in my hand
[395]
and without even saying anything
[398]
she just shut that door on my face
[403]
For a moment, I became numb
[407]
I was in shock
[410]
I didn't feel this bad
[414]
when my father told me to get out
[417]
I thought that this must be very easy
[421]
People usually need these things
[424]
so they will buy it
[426]
But this door that got slammed
[428]
on my face bought me back to reality
[431]
It broke my confidence, it just broke
[434]
everything inside me
[436]
But I guess this was
[438]
my first encounter
[440]
with the real world
[442]
I didn't have time
[444]
or the option
[446]
to cry, be sad or
[448]
to give up
[450]
because I had to feed myself
[456]
You know, the zeal to survive
[458]
can fill up anyone with enough courage
[460]
that they are able to do anything
[463]
And I think that hunger
[465]
to survive
[467]
gave me that new strength
[469]
and I stood up again
[471]
wiped off my tears
[473]
and this time
[475]
I told myself that I won't take any rejection
[478]
I went to the next house
[481]
And this time, I didn't get rejected
[485]
I did my first sale that day
[488]
Now that I think about it
[490]
it seems like a very small achievement
[492]
but this was the first
[494]
success of my life
[498]
Whenever I feel dejected
[500]
I just remember that day
[504]
That day, life taught me a valuable lesson
[509]
that in order to reach anywhere in life
[512]
you will have overcome challenges
[514]
You will get opportunities
[516]
like I got one from
[518]
that aunty at the station
[520]
and you will face a lot of challenges
[523]
just like when that door got slammed on my face
[525]
But it is up to you
[528]
to get back on your feet and
[529]
fight to succeed
[531]
and survive, and
[533]
these choices that you will make
[535]
will be monumental
[537]
both in your success
[539]
and failures
[541]
I learned one thing about life
[544]
that anything that provides
[547]
you with a 2-time meal
[549]
and a roof to live under
[551]
It is never small
[554]
I did a lot of jobs
[556]
Waitress, tele-caller
[558]
receptionist
[560]
I did every job here and there
[562]
and learned something from
[564]
every job that I did
[566]
and these learnings guide me even today
[570]
I was always outperforming my peers
[573]
because I never had the
[575]
security of not performing
[577]
I never had the privilege
[580]
of a fall back plan
[583]
I didn't even have the option to quit
[587]
working or sit at home
[590]
My only option was to give 100%
[592]
in anything and everything that I do
[595]
I eventually got a job at a clothing store
[599]
I was good at sales
[602]
I learned a lot of other things here
