[6]
what is time horizon and how聽 does it change my outlook聽聽
[10]
what is time horizon and how does it change okay聽 so i'm assuming that means with investing right so聽聽
[17]
if i look at investing this is this is really聽 fascinating because this comes up all the time聽聽
[23]
uh you kind of need to understand what has聽 happened historically with the stock market聽聽
[29]
to understand how much time horizon can聽 impact what you're thinking about doing聽聽
[33]
so if you look at say the worst one year that's聽 happened you know let's say since 1970s early 70s聽聽
[42]
in the total stock market itself it was聽 down about 43 percent yep so if you come聽聽
[47]
to me and say hey you know i want to buy聽 a house in a year and what what what stock聽聽
[54]
should i buy or you know what portfolio should聽 i have uh the answer is you shouldn't have any聽聽
[62]
at all you should put that into your bank聽 account cds something that's guaranteed now聽聽
[69]
the best rate of return for a one year period the聽 market was up 66 percent so you could get lucky聽聽
[78]
you could put money in roll the dice and hope that聽 that gain comes through right yeah and the market聽聽
[85]
does go up more than it goes down so i think you聽 have a slightly higher chance of getting lucky聽聽
[89]
than unlucky but my answer there would be that you聽 shouldn't invest for that short of a time horizon聽聽
[96]
the worst tenure right rate of return was down聽 two and a half percent and there hasn't been聽聽
[103]
a 12-year period uh at least since the early 70s聽 where you didn't have a positive rate of return so聽聽
[110]
longer term outlooks for stock market mixtures is聽 much much easier to accomplish what you're trying聽聽
[117]
to do which is grow your assets than shorter term聽 concepts and i've run into a lot of people have a聽聽
[124]
lot of misconceptions about that you know and i've聽 seen an awful lot of people with short-term goals聽聽
[130]
rolling the dice uh and obviously didn't work聽 this year i worked in 2020 yeah uh worked in 2021聽聽
[138]
actually is not working in 2022 so really take a聽 look at the time horizon that you have for your聽聽
[145]
investments and consider what you're trying to do聽 there either you know stick with the investments聽聽
[150]
and change your time horizon like hey this money聽 i was saving for my house and it's in the market聽聽
[156]
it's down now right now maybe i'll just use that聽 for retirement or something long term yeah i'll聽聽
[162]
keep adding a little bit to it and i'll build up聽 the house money somewhere else usually it's hard聽聽
[167]
to do that because houses are so expensive聽 right it takes so much capital to do that聽聽
[172]
or you just you know get out of it and and yeah聽 you know maybe you change the time horizon where聽聽
[178]
you're going to buy a house right wait till the聽 market comes back around continue i mean if you're聽聽
[184]
one still a gamble but it's i guess it's sort of聽 a middle line right you can continue to buy right聽聽
[189]
i'm gonna buy and okay maybe i don't buy a house聽 at the end of this year maybe it's two years from聽聽
[193]
now okay fine i'm gonna keep on buying because聽 i'm already in i've already lost money i'm going聽聽
[199]
to keep going so you know different strategies聽 but if you're starting off and you were to ask聽聽
[203]
me about time horizon that's what you'll find all聽 financial planners and advisors that's one of the聽聽
[208]
first questions we have as well how long you know聽 how long do you have before you need the money聽聽
[214]
because it denotes what you should do with that聽 money because essentially you're playing a game聽聽
[220]
of probabilities and so i would be really careful聽 for short timelines you know getting involved with聽聽
[225]
the stock market personally yeah and so that's聽 why it's important if you're you know looking out聽聽
[229]
for retirement or in retirement you want to have聽 something that has you know some sort of equity聽聽
[235]
or stock portion because you need your money to聽 keep growing and so if you have 15 20 years it's聽聽
[242]
likely that you're going to have a positive return聽 and so that's why you want to be in the market
