2020 Jeep Renegade Limited - Watch Before You Buy! - YouTube

[0]
- Conventional wisdom in America says that,
[2]
"Bigger is always better."
[3]
Right?
[4]
This is the land of big SUV, big trucks, big gulps,
[8]
but this is the 2020 Jeep Renegade Limited.
[12]
And this is the smallest Jeep that you can buy,
[14]
and in fact, it also has the smallest engine.
[18]
So what we're gonna do today is I'm gonna show you
[20]
the interior, go through all the cool technology,
[22]
I'm gonna drive it on the street.
[24]
And then, because this is the Limited,
[26]
this is the most luxurious Renegade available.
[29]
It's not the most off-road capable,
[31]
but we're here in the middle of nowhere.
[33]
We're gonna take it off-road and actually see how it does.
[35]
And we're gonna find out if smaller
[38]
is just as good as bigger.
[43]
We drove the canyons to find
[44]
the most epic challenge possible,
[47]
but it turns out sometimes you
[50]
just gotta work with what you've got.
[55]
So we actually found our first challenge,
[57]
This is a fjord, I don't know how deep it is yet,
[60]
we're gonna find out in a couple of minutes.
[62]
So we're gonna take the Jeep through this.
[63]
We're gonna see how it does.
[65]
It has a couple of different drive modes.
[67]
So by default, this is a front-wheel drive vehicle,
[70]
but it does have...
[72]
you can lock it in four-wheel drive mode
[74]
and so the rear axle will engage.
[76]
I think we're gonna try mud over here and see how it does.
[80]
So let's...
[81]
let's run through and let's see
[82]
how this bad boy behaves in the mud.
[84]
(upbeat music)
[98]
That worked pretty good.
[99]
Okay, so this wasn't
[100]
the deepest mud bog imaginable,
[102]
but the Jeep had no trouble at all
[104]
where a two-wheel drive vehicle might've
[106]
had some difficulty.
[107]
So first we're gonna take it off-road
[109]
and then we are going to check out the interior.
[113]
(upbeat music)
[125]
This the Jeep Renegade Limited, and we're on a trail here.
[130]
Now, this is not a Trail-Rated vehicle.
[133]
The most Trail-Rated Renegade you're gonna get
[135]
is the Trailhawk, and there's a couple key differences
[137]
between the Limited and the Trailhawk.
[140]
Namely it has some skid plates underneath it,
[142]
so it is more rated for going on trails like this,
[145]
it also has a little bit better ground clearance,
[147]
but primarily it has a transfer case
[150]
in four-wheel drive low.
[152]
So it's gonna be able to transfer power more effectively,
[155]
front to rear under difficult conditions.
[158]
However, I've been driving this in Sand mode,
[161]
and what that does is it does
[163]
an all-wheel drive lock, four-wheel drive lock,
[165]
so essentially it starts sending power to the rear wheels.
[168]
Not quite as clever as the Trailhawk,
[170]
but hey, this is the Jeep.
[171]
And even though it's not Trail-Rated,
[174]
this is doing just fine on moderate trails.
[177]
This is a level three trail,
[179]
and I'm having no difficulty at all here.
[182]
So if you're buying this vehicle
[184]
and you live in the countryside for example,
[185]
and you're wondering if this is gonna get you
[187]
through a snow storm or get you through some mud
[189]
or some inclement weather or just a little bit
[191]
of light off-road terrain, this is more than fine,
[195]
this is doing quite well.
[197]
The traction control system in here,
[199]
rather the all-wheel drive system in here
[201]
is called Selec-Terrain.
[203]
So Selec-Terrain is able to transfer power
[206]
to the appropriate wheel to some degree
[208]
but like I said before, it's not as clever
[211]
as the Trailhawk.
[212]
It's not as highly off-road rated as the Trailhawk is.
[216]
Now you would think a vehicle like this
[217]
is not gonna be that capable off-road,
[220]
'cause this has all season tires on it.
[222]
And to be honest, I wouldn't recommend this
[224]
for any heavy-duty trail use.
[226]
Oh, we've got a little, little wheel slip there,
[228]
but for what we're doing right now,
[230]
which is just some light trail usage,
[232]
I don't think anybody's gonna
[233]
have any real difficulty with this at all.
[236]
This is more than capable enough to go on
[240]
a light trail like this, I think.
[243]
And also, you know, something about the interior
[245]
that I haven't mentioned before either
[248]
is that it's a leather.
[249]
So I don't know if you're gonna wanna
[250]
be taking this off-road,
[252]
but aside from the fact that it is leather,
[254]
this is like a pretty durable interior,
[256]
you could really beat it up and probably give us
[259]
a fair bit of abuse and it's probably gonna be just fine.
[262]
This is something that I definitely can not do
[265]
in my Supra or any other car that I own,
[267]
which are sports cars.
[269]
So this is really cool to be able to go off-road
[271]
like this and enjoy a little outdoors
[273]
and enjoy what is a trail that pretty much
[276]
your average car isn't gonna be able to go over.
[280]
But this, this is pretty good.
[282]
This has got plenty of ground clearance.
[284]
So in terms of off-roading,
[286]
even though this is not Trail-Rated,
[288]
this seems to do pretty well.
[289]
Let's check out the interior.
[293]
(country music)
[296]
Now the Renegade is the smallest Jeep you can buy,
[299]
but the interior space is actually
[300]
a little bit better than I was anticipating.
[303]
The seats are pretty comfortable,
[305]
in the Limited it gets leather trimmed seats.
[308]
Now, one of my complaints is that everything
[310]
in here is really quite black.
[312]
There's a little bit of accent stitching
[314]
on the seats which is gray,
[316]
but everything else is super black.
[318]
I like a little bit more color in here,
[320]
but the seats, the driver's seat is eight-way adjustable.
[323]
Unfortunately, no memory,
[325]
but you can adjust lumbar support too.
[327]
So it fits me pretty well, I find it pretty comfortable.
[331]
Now the backseats are also surprisingly roomy.
[334]
I'm five foot nine, and I can sit behind
[336]
myself pretty decently.
[338]
If I were six one, I think that might be an issue,
[341]
but if you've got kids or you got occasional passengers,
[344]
I think it's gonna be just fine in terms of space.
[347]
Now the Mazda CX-3 is pretty close
[350]
in terms of interior cabin space.
[352]
This has a little bit more cargo space than the Mazda does.
[356]
With the rear seat up, this has got about 19 cubic feet
[360]
behind the rear seat in terms of cargo space,
[363]
and when you fold the rear seat down,
[364]
you've got about 50 cubic feet.
[366]
The materials in here are okay,
[369]
this car has a base price of $28,000.
[373]
Yes, it does have leather trimmed seats
[375]
and the leather steering wheel is quite nice too.
[377]
But the rest of the cabin has sort of okay materials,
[381]
the tops of the doors are a little bit hard plastic,
[383]
it does have some soft touch on the doors themselves.
[386]
Overall, the fit and finish seems pretty good in here,
[389]
but this is not a high-end luxury vehicle.
[392]
You're gonna find if you like
[394]
a better cabin and that's important to you,
[397]
there's probably some better choices out there than this.
[399]
That said, this seems to be pretty durable.
[403]
The Limited has a base price of about $28,000
[405]
and it is probably one of the more luxurious
[408]
and perhaps the most luxurious Renegade that you can get.
[411]
Not to say that this is a luxury vehicle,
[413]
but it does have a lot of features
[415]
that the lower levels don't have.
[417]
This also has auto stop-start,
[419]
it has voice command which is kind of cool.
[421]
You can give it a destination by your voice
[424]
and it works fairly well.
[426]
It's got a USB port and an additional 115 volt USB port,
[431]
I kinda like that.
[432]
It's also got a USB port in the rear seat,
[434]
that's really nice if you got people back
[436]
there all the time.
[437]
This particular vehicle has
[439]
the customer preferred package, it's $2,000.
[442]
It has LED headlights, LED tail lights.
[445]
It has a bigger 8.5 inch navigation screen,
[448]
I like that quite a bit.
[450]
It's got the Uconnect infotainment system,
[452]
but this has the bigger screen.
[453]
It's quite responsive.
[455]
Uconnect is fairly easy to use.
[457]
You can do a lot of different functions on the screen.
[460]
This particular model with this package also has navigation.
[464]
It has roof rails, it has satellite radio.
[466]
And this one has 19 inch wheels too,
[468]
which is not perfectly ideal for off-roading.
[471]
I think this is aimed a little bit more
[473]
at people who wanna do more of their driving
[475]
in the city with occasional off-roading.
[478]
One thing I was not expecting
[479]
in a vehicle at this price point is this parking feature.
[482]
Let's say you find yourself in a situation like this
[484]
where you got this little car and you want to fit it
[486]
into that spot there.
[490]
This Jeep has the advanced technology group,
[492]
which includes a really cool feature called Park Assist,
[496]
it practically parks itself.
[498]
Let me show you how it works.
[500]
Space found, keep moving forward.
[502]
All right, I've got it in drive.
[504]
All right, stop, remove hands from wheel.
[507]
Here we go, let's see how this works.
[509]
Hands are off, it's telling me to move backwards.
[511]
I got my hands on the brakes right now.
[516]
Oh, lots of beeping.
[520]
Lots of beeping, this is a tight spot.
[523]
Let's see how it does,
[524]
it's still telling me to move backwards.
[526]
This is crazy, this is crazy.
[529]
This is on a Jeep, this is on a $28,000 Jeep.
[533]
A little bit more.
[534]
Okay, it's beeping at me.
[535]
It's coming up to the truck behind me.
[537]
It still says to keep moving backwards, which I am.
[541]
A lot of beeping, we're getting close to things,
[543]
telling me to keep moving backwards.
[547]
Okay, stop, shift to drive.
[552]
Okay, move forward.
[559]
Move forward, move forward, move forward.
[561]
All right, stop.
[564]
Is that it?
[565]
It's complete.
[566]
All right, let's go take a look
[567]
and see how it looks outside.
[570]
All right, it's about three,
[573]
I'd say about like five inches away
[575]
in the front, in the rear.
[580]
A couple of inches up front.
[584]
I'd say that's pretty successful at parking.
[587]
Good job.
[592]
Being an unabashed sky worshiper,
[595]
I really need to sing the praises of this double sunroof.
[599]
It's $1,600 though.
[602]
This is also got the Kenwood Premium Audio Package for $745.
[607]
Generally speaking, I don't like
[608]
a lot of premium audio packages,
[610]
but this is quite good because the cabin
[612]
is big enough to utilize all the speakers in here.
[615]
This is gonna be pretty high components,
[617]
it has pretty good base response.
[618]
It's not the end of the world in terms of base,
[621]
but it is pretty good.
[622]
And for $745, personally I would get this.
[626]
I think it's pretty solid, and it's better
[628]
than I've heard in a lot of other vehicles.
[631]
If you have any questions on this vehicle
[632]
or you wanna chat with me,
[633]
Instagram is the best place to reach me.
[636]
It has a secondary display on the dashboard.
[639]
I think it's about seven inches
[640]
and it displays things like your radio,
[642]
your navigation, it's completely configurable.
[645]
And I like it, it works pretty well.
[646]
It's bright, it's colorful.
[648]
And it's just a nice display to have.
[651]
So with all the options and features,
[652]
this car is specked out to about $36,000,
[656]
including a $1,500 dealer delivery fee,
[659]
which seems kind of high.
[660]
However, I'm sure you can get vehicles like this
[663]
at a bit of a discount, especially considering
[665]
the health situation that we're in right now.
[668]
Now let's go for a drive and let's check it out
[670]
on some paved roads where you're probably gonna
[672]
be doing most of your driving.
[674]
So we're on the road with this 1.3 liter four cylinder,
[678]
it's a pretty small engine.
[680]
Of course it's turbocharged,
[681]
and it's amazing the amount of power
[682]
that they can make out of these nowadays.
[684]
This makes 177 horsepower and 210 pounds feet of torque.
[690]
Now that's not a lot, and even though
[692]
this is a relatively light vehicle,
[694]
the engine still strains a little bit
[697]
because it's just not that big.
[700]
Now the torque does come on fairly early which is nice,
[703]
if you compare it to the base 2.4 liter,
[706]
which was available in previous versions
[708]
of the Renegade in previous years,
[710]
and also in the base edition of sport,
[713]
this does make more torque and it comes on
[716]
at a lower RPM.
[717]
So that's a positive thing.
[719]
However, it's not a joyful engine
[722]
and it's made it to this nine speed automatic transmission.
[727]
And while the transmission itself is pretty good,
[729]
it's pretty smooth.
[731]
I don't really like the programming and here's why,
[734]
when you accelerate at part throttle like this,
[737]
maybe 50% throttle, it just doesn't wanna kick down.
[742]
And I find that kind of annoying,
[744]
especially when you're in the city
[746]
and you're in traffic and you wanna pass somebody,
[749]
there is a lag.
[750]
It's not the best sounding engine in the world either,
[753]
but it does deliver some okay fuel economy.
[756]
The rating on this is 23 miles per gallon in the city,
[761]
and I've been getting about 21 overall.
[765]
On the freeway, that's supposed to get 29.
[767]
I haven't been getting anywhere near 29,
[768]
but I've been on it pretty hard.
[771]
Now, if you've got a whole bunch of people in here
[774]
and some luggage, I don't think
[776]
your fuel economy is gonna be all that great.
[778]
Let's try it from a dead stop
[781]
and just see how exciting this really is.
[796]
Oh man, that didn't really knock my socks off too much.
[800]
So it took to about 3,500 RPM before
[803]
the engine really built up enough boost
[805]
for the torque to kick in from a dead stop.
[808]
The one thing I do like about the automatic
[810]
is that it does not hunt for gears
[812]
and it shifts very smoothly.
[814]
There's some automatics which are constantly hunting,
[816]
so from that standpoint, it's quite good.
[819]
Now the ride is quite good,
[821]
it's quite smooth, it absorbs bumps really well.
[823]
It's really nice in the city over imperfect roads,
[827]
I think the ride quality is one
[829]
of the plus sides of this vehicle.
[831]
And I took it out in the mountains
[833]
and even though this is not a canyon culvert
[835]
it's actually very little body roll
[837]
in this compared to a lot of other vehicles.
[839]
It definitely seems to handle corners pretty well.
[843]
Oh my gosh, that is bright.
[846]
Now, one of the advantages of a smaller SUV
[848]
or a CUV like this is that it's quite light.
[852]
This way, somewhere a little over 3000 pounds,
[855]
and that's pretty light for an SUV, a CUV.
[859]
So that's got that going for it.
[861]
And when you're going off road also,
[862]
which we're gonna do in a minute,
[865]
it's the ride is pretty decent there too
[867]
although that's not really anybody's biggest concern
[870]
when you're going off road.
[871]
Some of the highs of this vehicle are clearly
[874]
it's off-road capability.
[875]
Even though this isn't Trail-Rated,
[877]
it does very, very well on trails.
[879]
It's gonna do very well in inclement weather
[881]
and in the mountains, places like that.
[884]
Some of the high points of this vehicle
[885]
are the amount of space that you get
[888]
for the size of the outside is pretty good,
[891]
there's a lot of cabin space for a few adults in there.
[894]
If you're doing a lot of stuff with luggage
[896]
and you're going on longer trips,
[897]
you probably want a bigger vehicle than this.
[899]
If you live in the winter and winter climate,
[902]
if you live in the mountains, if you live
[903]
in something that's a little bit more rugged
[905]
and you're looking to do some off-roading part time,
[907]
I think this is an excellent choice.
[909]
My name is Eric, there's a couple of videos onscreen,
[912]
I will see you in the next video.
