QYLD in a Bear Market: Will this ETF still Pay Monthly Dividends? - YouTube

[0]
well we are officially in a bear market and聽 one fund that has always received criticism聽聽
[4]
about how it's never been through a bear聽 market is the fun q y l d well guess what聽聽
[9]
we're now in a bear market officially and we can聽 put qild up to the test and that is exactly what聽聽
[15]
we're going to talk about in today's video聽 qyld currently pays 11 to 12 dividend yield聽聽
[21]
and that's pretty darn attractive to most income聽 investors it's grown actually from 3.8 billion聽聽
[27]
under assets to today's 5.8 billion net assets聽 due to investors piling in on this fund to take聽聽
[33]
advantage of the monthly income and right now聽 you get anywhere from about 17 cents to 20 cents聽聽
[38]
per share every single month it's kind of nice to聽 get paid every single month by investing into a聽聽
[43]
fund is it not but the issue kind of comes down to聽 the price right a lot of people wondering what's聽聽
[48]
the deal with the price this fund isn't about the聽 price it's fun is about the monthly distributions聽聽
[55]
so in this video today what we're going to talk聽 about is which investors qyld actually benefits聽聽
[61]
how qyld is actually going to hold up in this bear聽 market and we're going to check qyld against qqq聽聽
[67]
and even against the s p 500 to see how聽 it's actually doing in the bear market聽聽
[72]
that is 20 22. you ready to get started don't be聽 dumb tap the thumb let's get right to it so how聽聽
[77]
they actually pay out their monthly distributions聽 is they write covered call options it's an options聽聽
[82]
trading strategy against the nasdaq 100 it's the聽 top 100 non-financial companies that are listed聽聽
[90]
in the nasdaq stock exchange now if you want more聽 detail on how that money every month is actually聽聽
[94]
paid out and how that all works you got to check聽 out my qyld tax video that i'll link down in the聽聽
[101]
description below as well as up above so you can聽 check that video out after this one because if聽聽
[106]
they don't make money on their options premiums聽 they pay you a different way and yes they've been聽聽
[112]
paying consistently and very strongly since they聽 first launched in 2013 but some of that comes with聽聽
[118]
some tax liability you need to make sure you check聽 that out before you invest in this particular fund聽聽
[123]
so who actually benefits from qyld well if you're聽 expecting some growth on a qyld this really isn't聽聽
[130]
your jam qyld is an income investor's dream聽 this is about somebody that's focused on聽聽
[137]
income distributions on a regular basis on a聽 somewhat reliable basis and this is what qyld is聽聽
[144]
all about and that's what i was mentioning earlier聽 with the price as we see it over here today聽聽
[148]
on seeking out 1777 per share if you look back聽 here it's dropped 20 percent over the last year聽聽
[154]
and if you go over the last five years it's down聽 11.24 you can see a little bit later um this聽聽
[160]
past 2021 it was at 22.90 a share of course聽 down to 17.77 but it's not about the price聽聽
[167]
the price will remain relatively flat right around聽 the 20s or the 15s or so because of how this fund聽聽
[175]
actually operates on its covered call options聽 writing strategies and you know it's interesting聽聽
[180]
to actually see it in this bear market this isn't聽 a correction this isn't a flash crash like back in聽聽
[185]
the pandemic this is truly a bear market and it's聽 going to be interesting to see how qyld actually聽聽
[191]
holds up now if you're an income investor this聽 one's going to be super interesting for you to聽聽
[195]
understand and how it weighs itself over the聽 next couple months especially if we continue聽聽
[200]
from a bear market into a long-standing recession聽 that some investors are calling for how is qild聽聽
[206]
actually going to hold up in this market and聽 this is really interesting i put this against聽聽
[210]
our portfolio visualizer as i always like to do聽 so if we look at this i put ten thousand dollars聽聽
[216]
into qyld and i just kind of put it in i set it聽 and i forget it and i don't reinvest any of the聽聽
[223]
dividends absolutely not so what happens from the聽 time that qyld launched until today what does that聽聽
[231]
look like well if we come down here here's the聽 answer our initial balance of ten thousand dollars聽聽
[236]
without dividends reinvested would only be worth聽 six thousand eight hundred and forty dollars today聽聽
[242]
what an absolute terrible thing right but remember聽 all that time you've been receiving dividends so聽聽
[248]
technically you're getting the payoff and because聽 you were not reinvesting the dividends you were聽聽
[252]
getting that cash back so what did you do with聽 that cash i don't know did you invest it into聽聽
[257]
other stocks or did you cash it out and use聽 it for some other fun money or whatever else聽聽
[262]
you'd want to do with it and that's the聽 whole reason that this is also interesting聽聽
[266]
this will draw down on your balance when they do聽 return of capital they don't always make money聽聽
[271]
on the covered call options writing strategies聽 that they do let's face it especially in a bear聽聽
[276]
market it's going to be hard to do that and then聽 what happens well then they have a decision they聽聽
[280]
have to make and that's called return of capital聽 where they're taking your money and returning it聽聽
[285]
to you based on a monthly distribution which is聽 also why we see this go from 10 000 down to 6840聽聽
[292]
on top of the bear market again you want more info聽 on that whole return of capital you got to check聽聽
[297]
out that tax video after this one but then look at聽 our annual returns you can see 2022 is the first聽聽
[303]
test of what is actually going to happen with this聽 particular fund down 16 otherwise it's been up聽聽
[309]
yes even in 2020 it was up 7.68 at the end of the聽 year but what happens if you reinvest the dividend聽聽
[315]
so we just looked at this went from 10 000 to聽 6840 if you would have reinvested the dividends聽聽
[321]
it's a little bit of a different story if you聽 compare apples to apples your ten thousand would聽聽
[325]
actually be worth sixteen thousand four hundred聽 and thirty six dollars today so even amongst all聽聽
[331]
the other pain in agony it has performed at least聽 okay giving back 6.02 percent since its initial聽聽
[338]
launch but it makes you wonder what about qqq聽 which also tracks the nasdaq 100 index but that聽聽
[345]
particular fund is not based on income investors聽 that is based on growth and i have a video on qqq聽聽
[352]
if you want to learn more about that one i'll also聽 link it down below if you want to check that one聽聽
[355]
out too but if you're focused on growth that might聽 be your jam if you're focused on income qld might聽聽
[360]
be your time it's all up to you and you still聽 got to do your own research none of this video聽聽
[364]
today is financial advice but let's compare聽 them if we did ten thousand dollars on qyld聽聽
[369]
and another ten thousand dollars on qqq which one聽 is doing better in 2022 so i'm actually going to聽聽
[377]
use 2021 to 2022 ten thousand dollars um we're聽 going to reinvest the dividends because why not聽聽
[383]
qild versus qq let's see what's happening so聽 i'm gonna analyze the portfolios and check this聽聽
[389]
out so you're ten thousand dollars on qqq landing聽 to you at nine thousand two hundred and thirty聽聽
[394]
four dollars it's still down because we're only聽 looking at one year but then qqq is down even more聽聽
[400]
ten thousand to nine thousand and five dollars聽 drawing down six point seven five percent qq is聽聽
[406]
actually down lower than qyld with the dividends聽 reinvested we're looking at qyld and you know聽聽
[413]
we're like okay if you look at the year to date聽 we're down 20.28 percent from january all the way聽聽
[419]
through to july and then you look at qqq and it's聽 down 26 so qyld is actually beating the nasdaq聽聽
[428]
index i mean that is pretty good comparatively to聽 our benchmark which is qqq but let's compare qyld聽聽
[434]
over here at this nice little uh 20.28 percent聽 down for 2022 to the s p 500 another great index聽聽
[442]
and we'll use spy spy as our benchmark for聽 the s p 500 20.28 percent down compared to聽聽
[451]
18.64 now that is super interesting isn't it聽 because here we are with the s p falling down聽聽
[458]
as much as it has qild even though it is falling聽 down two percentage points lower isn't as bad as聽聽
[465]
we thought it would be and that was a lot of聽 the criticism of qyld in the early days saying聽聽
[470]
hey this thing hasn't been through the bear聽 market how are we going to know what it does聽聽
[473]
when we approach said bear market well 2022 as聽 sad as it is has blessed us with this opportunity聽聽
[479]
to really look at qyld a whole different way聽 now somebody else asked me well wait a minute聽聽
[484]
what if the reverse happens and all of a sudden聽 the stock market recovers and shoots to the moon聽聽
[488]
will they be able to keep up with all of this聽 stuff well remember it is a covered call writing聽聽
[494]
option strategy if they can get some calls high聽 enough there could be some opportunities for聽聽
[498]
some premiums but right now and call me bearish聽 if you want or pessimistic even though i'm not聽聽
[504]
really trying to be pessimistic i really don't聽 see the stock market having a sudden surge and聽聽
[509]
recovering to like an all-time high right away聽 i think we're actually going to see a recovery聽聽
[513]
that is a little bit more slow and steady than we聽 have in the past remember the chronovirus pandemic聽聽
[518]
crash that happened in march 2020 i mean it went聽 boom it just fell off a cliff and then we all of聽聽
[523]
a sudden surged dramatically and a lot of that had聽 to do as much as you don't want to maybe admit it聽聽
[529]
let's be honest with ourselves because of the聽 stimulus checks because there was so much money聽聽
[533]
being pushed into the market by government聽 sending all this extra money and help and support聽聽
[538]
it raised up the stock market and yes the good聽 thing is we got back on track very quickly from聽聽
[543]
a very devastating situation but it also you聽 know surged us quite significantly i don't see聽聽
[549]
that happening again in fact right now the fed聽 is really focused on dialing back the inflation聽聽
[555]
with a lot of interest rates adjustments聽 so any type of recovery i think will be聽聽
[559]
great but a little bit more slow and聽 steady than we have seen in 2020 and 2021.聽聽
[565]
so i'm so excited about the fact that uh聽 you know qyld is that income investors聽聽
[570]
interesting opportunity again it is a distribution聽 not technically a dividend because the dividend聽聽
[574]
is based on a company's profit paid out to you聽 the investor whereas qyld is an interesting fund聽聽
[580]
that's based on options writing strategies聽 and therefore they give you a distribution聽聽
[584]
based on the income they generate through that聽 particular strategy what are your thoughts on qyld聽聽
[589]
comment down below and let me know check out聽 this video next we'll see you on the next video
