Board Games 101: What is an Engine Builder game? - YouTube

H!
[1]
It's Professor Ryan from Nights Around a Table.
[2]
What is an engine builder?
[5]
Today on (singing) Board Games 101!!
[9]
So engine building games.
[10]
i think i can demonstrate the concept
[11]
pretty simply.
[12]
i've got a fake game here that is about cards.
[14]
Now, an engine builder is a game that has components to
[17]
it, so they can be cards, they could be tiles, or tokens - it really doesn't matter
[20]
- maybe even dice?
[22]
But the idea is that each little component has a piece of
[25]
functionality.
[26]
So in our fakie game, the rule is you get to play one card, and
[29]
activate one card on your turn.
[31]
These are not necessarily the cards i'll get in
[32]
this order, but check this out: i'm gonna play the first card, and it says "Score
[36]
1 point."
[37]
So, i played a card.
[38]
Now i'm gonna activate a card... boom! i get a point.
[41]
Okay, fine.
[42]
Not that exciting.
[43]
But check this out: on the next turn, i'm gonna play
[44]
this other card, which lets me score 2 points.
[48]
Now i get to activate a card, so between the two of them, i'm obviously
[52]
gonna choose the 2 point card over the 1 point card.
[54]
Boom - i activate it, and i get my 2 points.
[56]
Now, it's a little bit of a shame that this 1 point card sort
[60]
of went to waste.
[61]
However, later on, i'm going to play a card on my turn that
[64]
says "score 1 point and activate another card."
[68]
Well, this is cool!
[70]
So i'm... i'm getting better and better.
[72]
So i'm going to activate this, and get my one
[73]
point, and then i get to activate another card, so i'm gonna go for the two-point
[77]
card.
[78]
So great!
[79]
So now i went from one point in a turn, to getting two points
[81]
in a turn... now i'm getting three points in a
[83]
turn.
[84]
Then, of course, on a later turn, i'm going to play a card that looks like
[87]
this... "score 1 point and activate 2 other cards."
[91]
Now check out this daisy-chain combo reaction: so i'm gonna
[93]
activate that, and i get 1 point, and that lets me activate two other cards.
[98]
So the two other cards are going to be this
[100]
one - score 1 point and activate another card - which lets me activate this one, and
[105]
this one still has one left over, so boom! i'm gonna activate that one!
[107]
And i'm gonna get - what is it? - one, two, three,
[109]
four, five points on a turn!
[111]
So i've just demonstrated sort of how an engine
[113]
builder works: you get little pieces, and you use those pieces to build a machine
[118]
that hopefully generates points for you as the game goes on, and more and more
[122]
points, so you're building a better and better contraption, or machine, or
[124]
whatever the theme happens to be, in the game.
[128]
Pretty neat!
[129]
Now it's a pretty broad generalization of a mechanic.
[132]
It's a little bit hard to pin down, but there
[134]
are tons of different games that you can try that are in that engine builder
[138]
umbrella.
[139]
One of the favourites of the channel is called Race for the Galaxy, but i don't
[144]
highly recommend it to people who are brand-new to board games.
[147]
It gets a little bit hairy and a little bit
[149]
difficult to suss out what all the different icons mean.
[152]
If you want more of a gentle introduction to this sort of
[155]
concept, you could try out something like Splendor, or the marginally better (in my
[160]
opinion) Century: Spice Road.
[162]
There are two versions of that.
[163]
There's one with boring graphics, and there's ones with cool
[165]
giant golems on it.
[167]
Perhaps interestingly, the very first one that i think i ever
[170]
tried - and again, it's debatable whether it's gonna be called an engine builder or
[174]
not - was called This Game is Bonkers, which was an old roll-and-move game from
[179]
the 70s, where the idea was to lay down tiles that changed the board, that made
[183]
you go back two spaces, go forward X number of spaces, collect this many points.
[188]
And the whole idea was you were trying to rig the board and get your pawn
[191]
trapped in this endless loop of generating points.
[193]
So i would call that an engine builder.
[195]
i think it fits.
[196]
Now, i think one of the key parameters, or key
[199]
design choices, a designer makes when they build an engine building game, is to end
[204]
the game while people are still having fun, if that makes sense?
[207]
So in a lot of these games, you get your whole machine
[209]
up and running, your whole engine's going, and it's ready to generate points for
[212]
you, aaand that's the last round and it's over.
[215]
But like my friend Doc says - you know - people complain about that
[218]
sometimes, but it's really no fun if the game lets you run your engine for a few
[221]
turns, because what's the point of that?
[223]
The point of it was building.
[224]
i mean, anybody can just - you know - crank out
[226]
points after points after points.
[228]
The... the challenge is just getting there in just
[230]
enough time to maybe squeeze some points out of it, and get your fun out of it, and
[234]
then the game ends.
[235]
But if you're just round after around - you know - printing
[238]
money or whatever it is the entire time, it's not gonna be quite as
[241]
enjoyable.
[242]
But that's a taste thing.
[243]
So for those of you who are TAs and are
[245]
auditing my course or helping out, what do you think?
[248]
What is your favourite engine building game?
[250]
There's so many to choose from,
[251]
but i'd like to hear from you in the comments below.
[253]
Let me know.
[254]
If you'd like to discuss this with me in person, my
[256]
office hours are... always... pm the Discord channel, so just follow that
[261]
link and you can jump in and we can chat about it.
[263]
And in the meantime, for those of you suggesting i am NOT a real
[266]
professor, i don't know what you're talking about.
[268]
i have a beard.
[269]
i have a corduroy jacket, and look: i'm even
[271]
wearing glasses.
[272]
So basically what else do you need?
[274]
Thanks for watching!
[276]
Class dismissed.
