(gentle music)
[25]
- Before we hear from a
few of our board members,
[27]
I think it's worth explaining
[28]
what the Carnegie Library
Board is actually comprised of.
[31]
There are a total of 38 board members,
[33]
and no, they're not professional
athletes, except for Will.
[36]
They're regular folks
just like me and you.
[38]
Of the 38 members, 8 are life trustees,
[41]
meaning they serve on the
board for their entire life.
[44]
Twenty are term trustees,
meaning they serve on the board
[47]
for a couple of years.
[48]
And there are 10 public trustees.
[50]
These are public officials
like city council members
[53]
or the president of the school board.
[55]
And the goal of the board in essence
[56]
is to help the library
best serve the public.
[59]
Okay, let's hear from
some of our board members.
[63]
- To me, a library is like
a limitless opportunity
[67]
to get a better understanding
of just life in general.
[71]
I just remember as a child,
I really enjoyed reading.
[75]
I would go and just
browse through the books
[79]
and get a chance to take out books.
[82]
And it was also kind of
like a little escape,
[85]
because you get to use your imagination
[88]
and you get to think
about and select books
[91]
that are different from the
world that you may be in.
[98]
- So one time there was a contest
[100]
when I was in elementary school.
[102]
And it was a bookmark contest.
[104]
You had to decorate a bookmark,
and I won first place.
[108]
And that bookmark I have today.
[111]
The Carnegie Library sent the winners
[113]
this little letter that
told us we were invited
[115]
to attend the Imaginarium.
[117]
And it was a really big deal for me.
[119]
It was something that I
got to do independently
[121]
while my mom was in the waiting room.
[123]
And it just, it introduced me to all
[126]
the wonderful things that
the library has to offer
[129]
and the opportunities
that can come with it.
[136]
- Serving is using the
tools and the resources,
[140]
the skills, your emotion, your abilities,
[144]
your thought process, your intellect
[147]
to help other people,
to serve other people,
[150]
with those gifts and those tools.
[151]
The library, I believe,
is a communal place.
[155]
It's a great place for
community and people to come in
[157]
and learn, to grow with each other.
[160]
Anybody can come here.
[161]
It's a place for everyone,
[163]
whether you're an immigrant
or whether you're just
[165]
a person living down the
street, it doesn't matter.
[168]
This place is a service place,
[170]
is a service oriented system.
[172]
I believe it's equitable,
and I believe it's inclusive.
[181]
- The library has really
tried to figure out
[183]
how it can build a set of services
[185]
that people can access remotely.
[187]
Listen, I have some issues
and I'd like to work
[190]
with somebody on my resume,
or I've lost my job,
[193]
I'd like to apply for
unemployment insurance,
[196]
I'm looking for this novel,
[197]
I want to listen to this symphony.
[199]
All of those things can happen online.
[201]
You can get access to that.
[203]
I was trying to find those
one minute book reviews
[206]
that you were telling me about.
[207]
I couldn't find them and I hit
the chat function and said,
[209]
hey where are they?
[211]
And within a few seconds
somebody pointed them out to me
[213]
and there I was downloading reviews
[215]
and listening to the ones I wanted to.
[224]
- Joining up with the
Greater Pittsburgh Community
[227]
Food Bank to distribute food to kids
[231]
who aren't getting meals at school.
[233]
And we all know, if you're
hungry you're not gonna learn.
[237]
So the idea to get kids
to be able to come,
[239]
have a meal, have an
after school snack, right?
[242]
And then with that
still give them a chance
[245]
to have a safe place to be, to learn,
[247]
is just really such a powerful thing.
[257]
- A library, I know
that in the 21st century
[260]
library roles have changed.
[263]
The fact that you can
come here and take classes
[266]
and further your education or your career,
[269]
the fact that you can come
here to access the internet,
[272]
that you can come here
for no other purpose
[275]
than to just be.
[283]
- I happen to enjoy
biographies and books that have
[286]
some historical context to them.
[290]
So I recently read an
autobiography of Chuck Noll,
[295]
the former Steelers football coach.
[298]
And I thought coming
into it that it would be
[300]
a relatively simplistic read.
[302]
It was a gift from a friend.
[304]
And it turned out to be highly nuanced
[306]
and he was an incredibly
interesting and complex person.
[310]
And a lot of that was
driven by the time period
[313]
in which he grew up and the
ethnic origins of his family.
[318]
And then how he translated
that into leadership
[320]
of a team that he really turned around
[324]
and turned into a dynasty.
