HOW I PAID OFF MY TESLA IN 1 YEAR and BUILT A SMART HOME! - YouTube

Channel: Hey Ashley Renne

[0]
Guys, I did it.
[1]
I paid off my Tesla a year after I bought it and we finished building our smart home!
[7]
I think it's time I shared my story.
[12]
Hey y'all, it's Ashley Renne, and welcome back to my sustainable travel, lifestyle,
[25]
and smart tech blog where I show you how to live an adventurously green life.
[29]
This video is sponsored by Suntrust.
[31]
If you guys follow me on Instagram, then you know I talk a lot about money, my own personal
[39]
finances, and how being financially savvy can help you live your best life.
[44]
Understanding money from an early age is what ultimately helped me live MY best life.
[49]
I got to where I am today because I was taught how to budget, save, and resist spending temptations.
[55]
It’s something everyone can learn how to do.
[59]
And in this video I’ll share with you my personal stories and tips on how I managed
[64]
my finances.
[66]
My latest resource for learning about finances is SunTrust’s free 21-day #bestlifechallange
[71]
that’s basically designed to empower you to take the same kind of steps that I took
[76]
to live the life I wanted.
[78]
So before I start my story, I’m officially challenging YOU to do this and get your family
[84]
and friends to do it with you too – they’re daily challenges you can do on your own time
[88]
and it's for anyone who wants to get their finances together and on the right track plus
[93]
it's a free resource so take advantage of it.
[98]
Growing up, financial literacy wasn’t taught in my community.
[103]
Thankfully my parents taught me good money habits when I was a kid, but not everyone
[109]
has access to that kind of information during their childhood which can sometimes lead to
[114]
financial struggles later on in life.
[117]
Which is why I’m vocal about the need to have these kinds of open conversations about
[121]
financial literacy with your friends, family, local community, and especially the young
[127]
people in your life.
[129]
So today I’m telling my story of how I gained the kind of financial confidence that led
[133]
to me being able to pay off my dream electric car, build my dream smart home, and ultimately
[140]
live my best green life.
[142]
I’ve been wanting to share my story since I moved in, so I'm really excited to finally
[147]
talk to y'all about it!
[149]
My story begins when I was a kid.
[151]
My mom taught me credit card responsibility and the importance of saving for retirement
[157]
and my dad was super frugal – like I grew up on pawn shops and thrift stores y’all.
[161]
Between the two of them, I grew up understanding the difference between needs and wants and
[166]
why it’s so important to make financial security a top priority.
[170]
So before I left for college, I already had a financial vision.
[174]
I applied for scholarships like crazy so I could walk away from college debt-free.
[180]
I used scholarships to cover my tuition and worked all throughout college so that I could
[184]
pay for living expenses and build up my savings.
[188]
I graduated in 3.5 years and started working full-time in the creative field.
[193]
My salary wasn’t very high in the beginning of my career.
[196]
But it increased over time and no matter if I was making a little in the beginning or
[200]
a lot more later on, I always prioritized saving my money.
[204]
I would adjust my lifestyle according to how much I made.
[207]
In order to save, I asked myself what were the things that mattered to me the most.
[213]
In my early 20s, it was traveling the world and buying my first home.
[217]
So in order to make those things happen, it was imperative for me to stick to a budget.
[222]
For example, when I was in college, I had to eat right?
[226]
But I established a monetary limit on food.
[229]
I gave myself a $20 grocery budget that I strictly adhered to.
[233]
Even after I graduated and was working in corporate America, I continued to budget my
[238]
money.
[239]
I bought generic everything.
[241]
I made my own lunch.
[242]
I barely wore makeup back then—and ladies y’all know how expensive makeup can be.
[247]
Didn’t really care about buying new clothes.
[250]
My skincare routine was basic at best.
[253]
I used my video and photography skills to work on side projects to bring in additional
[257]
income.
[259]
And I moved in with my parents for a little while so I could save up to buy a home, because
[263]
that was my goal in my early 20s.
[266]
And at the age of 25, I met my goal.
[270]
Now this part of the story has everything to do with why I was able to get to where
[273]
I am today.
[275]
The house that I bought was a foreclosure and it was roughly half the price of what
[279]
it originally cost.
[281]
Because of my strict budgeting and good money habits, I had saved up enough for a significant
[286]
down payment and shortened the life of the loan so I could pay it off sooner.
[291]
A few years went by and I met my husband who was also very financially savvy.
[296]
We were both good with money in very different ways.
[300]
For example, he brought something different to the table that I wasn’t very educated
[304]
on—which is stocks and bonds.
[307]
Between the two of us, we were able to join forces and take our financial confidence to
[311]
a new level in order to conquer our dreams together.
[315]
In 2016, we got married and had a debt-free wedding because again – we budgeted for
[321]
it and stuck to it.
[324]
After our wedding, we diligently went right back to replenishing our savings.
[328]
Now during this time, I was also coming up with a plan to quit my job.
[332]
I had been working tirelessly on my blog and personal brand during my free time and I had
[337]
gotten to a point where I was so passionate about wanting to inspire people to live and
[343]
travel more eco-consciously.
[345]
So my plan was to save up enough money to support myself after leaving corporate America.
[351]
So I saved and saved and saved, and in 2017, I officially put in my 2-weeks notice.I quit.
[360]
Just like that.
[361]
I felt pretty confident because I had enough in savings to last me a year and a half..
[366]
So I figured, okay I have a year and a half to get my business off the ground.
[369]
But that was until I bought a Tesla.
[372]
I purchased an electric car to REALLY live my message of sustainability that I had been
[377]
talking about.
[378]
Thankfully, I still had enough in savings left to sustain me while I worked on my business.
[384]
My timeline had just shortened a little.
[386]
No biggie.
[387]
So I wasn’t too worried about it.
[390]
Until...we decided to build a new HOME.
[392]
All of a sudden, my savings I thought I'd be relying on to keep me safe as I pursued
[397]
a career in building my own successful personal brand suddenly went away.
[402]
It was the push I needed to really hustle and make my dreams come true.
[406]
But I was still building my personal brand and audience, and I needed more time to find
[411]
success in that avenue.
[413]
So I had to get creative.
[414]
I found financial confidence by analyzing my existing skillsets to see what kind of
[420]
business I could launch to make money while I was working on my ultimate dream career.
[426]
I have a professional background in video so I started a video production company.
[431]
I paid my friend to do my website.
[433]
I did some free projects for a few businesses to populate the website with more examples
[438]
of my work.
[440]
Word of mouth got around, and through referrals, it ended up being a success!
[445]
I brought in enough clients to make money to support my new sustainable lifestyle as
[449]
a luxury electric car and smart home owner.
[453]
So I was doing all of this as my home was being built.
[458]
After 10 months of building our new home, we put my old home on the market.
[462]
And this is where the story ties together.
[464]
Remember I told you it was a foreclosure and I got a great price on it.
[468]
Well, I sold it for more than double what I paid for it.
[472]
So I was able to put that profit from my home sale towards things that mattered to me like
[477]
really beefing up our savings, putting it in investments, and towards supporting our
[482]
sustainable lifestyle, which for me, meant paying off my electric car.
[486]
So that’s how I paid it off a year after I bought it.
[490]
On top of the home sale profit, we had also already been saving rigorously and putting
[494]
money aside specifically for our smart home project.
[499]
To make things even better, not too long after moving in, my personal brand also really took
[504]
off and I now am able to make a full-time living doing exactly what I quit my job to
[509]
do instead of having to rely on the production company I created in the meantime as I was
[515]
working towards this dream.
[517]
I'm grateful it all worked out.
[518]
I’m not going to lie, it was scary, but I remained confident in my ability to pursue
[523]
my dreams and thrive financially.
[526]
Now I'm living my best life with my dream home, dream car, dream career, and I get to
[532]
do it all with my extra dreamy husband :-P
[535]
That's my story of how I took a leap of faith and quit my job and gained financial confidence
[540]
during a time of uncertainty.
[543]
It's really important to me to share this kind of stuff with you because all too often,
[547]
people are afraid to talk about finances.
[549]
It's a real problem!
[551]
The only way we can get better is to openly discuss topics like this.
[555]
You should be talking about this stuff to your friends, family, and communities to help
[560]
both you and those around you thrive.
[563]
Start a money book club where you and you friends pick a good book about money and meet
[568]
up to discuss it.
[569]
Or you can be like my cousins who just started an annual family financial literacy night
[575]
where they get together and play games and talk about 401ks.
[579]
When you take people with you on your financial journey, that's how real change happens.
[584]
And that's why I'm really excited about this partnership with SunTrust, because financial
[589]
literacy is an important part of life and I want to see more people out here living
[594]
their best life.
[596]
While money can't buy you happiness, being financially confident can bring a lot of happiness
[601]
to your life as it has to mine.
[604]
Being good with managing money created options for me to build out my dream life.
[610]
So for anyone who's watching this video and you've been following my travels, my electric
[615]
car adventures, my Smart Home journey – then I want you to know that understanding money
[619]
and how to manage your finances is a big part of how I’ve been able to do all this.

[634]
to help you identify what you need to do to set yourself up to live your best life.
[640]
Trust me, it’s so much easier to live life to the fullest when you’re financially confident.
[644]
And when it comes to enjoying those special moments, it’s not about how much money you
[650]
have, but what you do with it that counts.
[653]
Studies show that if you focus your spending and savings around what you personally value,
[660]
you can feel more fulfilled in life.
[662]
So start budgeting!
[664]
Your budget is a plan that allows you to spend your money the way that fits your lifestyle.
[670]
Whether you use an app, a spreadsheet or even a pen and paper to track your budget, be sure
[675]
your spending categories match what matters most to you.
[679]
So for me being an entrepreneur and living a sustainable life, my budget revolves around
[685]
figuring out how to best support my business and maintain my commitment to sustainability
[691]
in a financially responsible way.
[695]
So here are some questions to ask yourself on your financial journey: 1.
[699]
What are the three things that matter most to you right now?
[704]
2.
[705]
What are your personal money beliefs?
[708]
And 3.
[709]
What’s gonna help you reach that next level of financial confidence?
