common size balance sheet - YouTube

[1]
all right welcome back now we're going
[3]
to look at doing a
[4]
common size balance sheet and a common
[6]
size income statement i'm going to start
[8]
with my balance sheet so i'm back on my
[10]
original consolidated balance sheet
[12]
and again i'm going to make a copy of
[15]
this so that i'm not marking up my
[16]
original balance sheet because i want to
[18]
turn that in just
[20]
in its original form so i'm going to go
[22]
down to this tab where it says
[23]
consolidated balance sheets
[25]
right click move or copy
[29]
i'm going to click create a copy and i'm
[32]
going to put it right in front of my
[33]
consolidated statement of operations
[37]
all right now i have my copy i'm going
[39]
to right click on the tab
[42]
and rename this
[45]
common size bs for balance sheet
[50]
okay so now what i'm going to do
[53]
for my common size balance sheet i'm
[55]
going to take a look at
[57]
what percentage each line item is
[61]
of total assets so first thing i'm going
[64]
to do is copy over
[66]
my years so i'm going to highlight
[69]
b2 and b3 where it says may 31st 2019
[72]
and may 31st 2018
[75]
and i'm going to right click copy and
[78]
then i'm going to go to
[80]
cell d 2
[83]
and right click paste all right
[86]
now i have my
[89]
headings for my common size okay so i'm
[92]
going to take each line item
[94]
and i'm going to divide it by total
[96]
assets my total assets are here
[98]
in row 16. so i'm going to go to
[101]
d4 my cash and cash equivalence line and
[105]
i'm going to type
[106]
plus b4 because i'm looking at 2019
[111]
divided by
[116]
b16 now before i hit
[119]
enter i'm going to hit the f4 key so
[122]
from my computer i have to
[124]
hit function f4 see where it puts in
[128]
those
[129]
um dollar signs that's going to hold
[132]
that cell constant so when i copy this
[134]
formula down
[136]
the b4 will change to c4 e4 d4
[139]
d4 e4 f4 as i copy it down
[143]
but the b16 won't change so every line
[145]
item will be divided
[147]
by total assets so now i'm going to hit
[149]
enter
[151]
i'm going to change this to a percent by
[154]
clicking this percent symbol
[156]
and add two decimals so i know now
[160]
that cash and cash equivalents in 2019
[163]
are 18.87 percent of total assets
[167]
i'm going to do the same thing for 2019.
[170]
i say plus 2018
[174]
plus c4 which is my
[177]
cash balance at the end of 2018 divided
[180]
by
[181]
c16 my total assets
[184]
i'm going to hit function f4 yours might
[187]
just be f4
[188]
and enter i'm going to change the
[191]
formatting
[192]
to a percentage and add two decimals
[196]
so in 2018 cash was 35 percent of total
[200]
assets
[202]
and that percentage has decreased to
[204]
18.87 percent
[206]
in 2019. hmm that tells me something
[210]
might be going on
[211]
but that is for another phase of our
[213]
project but this is definitely something
[215]
i would pick for one of my research
[217]
items for my team
[218]
all right so then i'm going to highlight
[222]
cells d 4 and e4 right click
[227]
copy i'm going to highlight where i want
[230]
them to go
[231]
all the way down to
[234]
total liabilities and equity i'm going
[236]
to right click
[238]
and paste okay so now
[241]
i know what percent everything
[244]
is as a where i know for each line item
[248]
what percentage of total assets it is
[250]
we're going to keep total assets as the
[251]
denominator
[252]
all the way down even when we're looking
[254]
at liabilities and equity
[256]
i know i've done this right
[260]
if my total assets line is 100
[264]
and you can see here my total assets
[267]
line is not a hundred percent
[269]
and the problem is my formula i used
[272]
c 15 instead of c
[275]
16. so i'm going to fix that i'm going
[277]
to do plus
[278]
c 4 divided by c
[282]
16 this time my function f4
[287]
and i'm going to copy and paste it again
[289]
oh i'm getting very different numbers
[291]
this time
[291]
okay that's good
[296]
all right so now i've got a hundred
[298]
percent 100
[299]
for total assets that's a really good
[302]
sign
[302]
i'm just going to delete those zeros and
[305]
now i have my common size balance sheet
[308]
ready to go
[309]
i'm going to check just to make sure
[311]
that it's going to print
[312]
out on one page and it does
[316]
looks like it's going to print nicely so
[317]
i can hit escape
[319]
and that concludes common size balance
[322]
sheet
