- Welcome to The Budget Mom YouTube channel.
[2]
I'm Kumiko love from TheBudgetMom.com,
[4]
and today we're gonna be talking
[5]
all about work/life balance.
[8]
What does this look like in my life
[10]
as a full time entrepreneur and working from home
[13]
as well as what did it look like in my life
[16]
when I was working two jobs,
[17]
essentially working on The Budget Mom business,
[20]
and, you know, going down to an eight-to-five job
[22]
all at the same time of being a single mom
[25]
and raising my son.
[27]
There's a lot that goes on in this conversation,
[30]
but I think the most important word
[31]
that we're gonna be talking about today is balance.
[35]
(cheerful acoustic music)
[50]
So work/life balance.
[52]
It's something that we all struggle with.
[53]
I know in my own life I've struggled with it.
[56]
I think for me,
[57]
my main struggle was finding what that balance
[61]
looked like for me personally,
[63]
and the boundaries I had to establish in my life
[66]
to be comfortable and okay with that.
[69]
So there are a couple of different things
[71]
that I've learned along my journey.
[73]
The number one thing is setting healthy boundaries,
[77]
and boundaries that you set in your personal life
[80]
is gonna look different for everybody.
[82]
For me, boundaries had to do with
[85]
how I spent my time and energy.
[90]
So for me, spending quality time with my son
[93]
while being a work, you know, a working mom
[95]
was really, really important.
[97]
So establishing those boundaries
[99]
and figuring out my hard nos.
[102]
So for example, one of my boundaries in my life is Sunday.
[106]
Sunday is a family day.
[108]
I make sure that I'm 100% completely present
[112]
physically and mentally for my family and for my son.
[116]
Sunday is family only.
[118]
That is my hard boundary.
[119]
It's also my hard no.
[121]
I think what also, when you're juggling work/life balance,
[126]
you know, you want to obviously get better
[129]
in your professional career and life,
[131]
and you also want to be better as being a mom,
[135]
and a spouse, and a daughter, or a friend.
[139]
I had to develop hard nos.
[141]
And what that looked like for me is saying to myself,
[144]
I will not miss Christmas with my family and my son.
[148]
That was one of my hard nos.
[150]
So stepping back and thinking about
[152]
what the things that are really important,
[153]
the things that matter to you,
[155]
and then even working down a list,
[157]
writing down a list of those boundaries and those hard nos.
[160]
Another thing that I learned
[162]
when trying to juggle work life balance
[165]
was realizing that it's really hard
[168]
to be great at something if you're trying to do everything,
[173]
You can't be a good mom, a good coworker, a good employee,
[178]
the best friend, the best daughter, the best sister,
[183]
the best everything all at the same time.
[186]
So you really have to pick and choose the things
[191]
that you spend your energy and time on.
[194]
And for me that's different every single day.
[197]
Maybe one day, I'm focusing my time
[199]
on energy on my business.
[201]
Maybe one day, it's focusing my time and energy
[204]
on the quality time that I'm spending with my son.
[206]
But you have to I think have that mindset
[209]
and understanding that you can't be great
[212]
at everything all at the same time.
[215]
And you really have to pay attention
[218]
to how you are intentional with your time and energy
[222]
and make sure that you are really utilizing those resources
[226]
for the things that matter most to you.
[228]
Another thing that really helped me
[230]
as far as work/life balance was making sure
[233]
that I had a very good organized schedule
[237]
and goal setup in my life.
[240]
Now, I'm a sporadic person.
[242]
I'm the type of person where I literally think about
[245]
10 million different things all at once,
[248]
and I try doing all of them.
[250]
I'm also the type of person
[251]
where when I have a passion for something,
[255]
it drives me and I don't stop.
[259]
So it was really hard for me to find that line
[262]
between pursuing something that I'm so passionate about
[266]
versus what I really needed to be doing.
[270]
And that all comes down to your priorities,
[273]
but also having an organized schedule in my life
[276]
really helped with finding the time
[280]
to spend on the things that mattered.
[282]
So of course, when I was working my eight-to-five job,
[284]
that was making sure that my heart and mind
[289]
were at that job.
[290]
I was giving 100% of myself to my employer
[294]
because that's what they paid me to do.
[297]
When I was here at home, I had to set that boundary of:
[302]
I leave work at work.
[304]
Five o'clock is that cutoff.
[306]
When I go home, my mind and my attention,
[309]
my passion is at home.
[311]
It's on family, it's on my son.
[314]
So having also that organized schedule, I mean,
[317]
it's for meal plans,
[318]
and for planning out different activities,
[321]
and planning ahead for different things
[324]
happening in my life
[324]
also helped reduce a lot of that stress.
[326]
And I'm gonna be showing you my complete organized system
[330]
for the things that I have as far as my schedule,
[332]
my meal plan and all the other types of things
[335]
that go into that.
[336]
So the last thing I quickly wanna talk about
[339]
when it comes to work/life balance
[341]
before I show you the things and resources
[344]
I have implemented in my life
[345]
to kind of help with that balance
[348]
is learning to take care of yourself.
[351]
So it's hard for me to be the best mom that I can be,
[356]
or the best partner that I can be,
[359]
or the best daughter that I can be
[361]
without first working on myself.
[363]
So I've kinda learned to embrace self care in my life,
[367]
and what that looks like for me is making sure
[370]
that I have a dedicated time in my planner,
[373]
in my schedule to do the things that I enjoy,
[376]
not as a mom, not as an employee,
[379]
not as a partner, not as a friend, but as an individual.
[384]
Embracing those small things
[385]
and really taking the time and making the conscious effort
[389]
to spend time on myself is not selfish.
[393]
It's actually very giving.
[396]
You need to have that time in your life for yourself
[399]
in order to do the things that you do best.
[402]
And so I really had to learn
[404]
how to embrace that in my life.
[405]
And for me, like I said,
[406]
that just means putting it in my planner,
[408]
making a specific dedicated plan for that time,
[411]
whether it's going out to lunch with a girlfriend,
[413]
maybe it's taking 15 minutes in the morning to read a book,
[416]
finding an hour to work out,
[418]
but spending in making that conscious effort for myself
[422]
is really, really, really important.
[424]
So let me show you some of the different resources and tools
[428]
I've implemented in my life to help with work/life balance.
[432]
So to help me with work/life balance,
[434]
I had to figure out what type of person that I am.
[437]
And I quickly realized that I'm a list person. Okay?
[440]
I, the way that I organize my life
[443]
is via worksheets and different lists.
[446]
I go down and I just check 'em off.
[448]
So incorporating an organized system to help
[452]
will combat some of that stress.
[454]
Not only that I feel like, look, mom guilt is a thing.
[460]
We feel like sometimes
[461]
we're sacrificing time with our children maybe to do work
[467]
or to do other things that we feel we need to get done.
[469]
And one of the things that I've embraced in my life
[472]
is really showing myself grace,
[475]
knowing that I'm making these sacrifices now
[479]
to provide something better in the future.
[482]
And that's something that I really had to be okay with.
[486]
Now everyone's passions, everyone's pursuits are different.
[491]
For me, my passion is a little bit different
[493]
as it's not your normal eight-to-five job.
[497]
So helping people with their finances via The Budget Mom
[500]
is something that I have incorporated into my everyday life.
[505]
That's essentially what The Budget Mom is.
[508]
And so I have to work around that a little bit more
[511]
than some other moms out there,
[513]
but it's really about just giving yourself grace
[516]
and realize, and looking at what you're working towards,
[519]
whether it be professionally, as a mom,
[521]
as a partner, whatever.
[523]
So I wanna show you what I have going on now.
[525]
We're currently in my office.
[527]
This is my command center.
[530]
I use this space for a couple of different things.
[534]
My cleaning schedule,
[536]
and I have my full cleaning schedule here on YouTube.
[540]
This is where I write down all of my thoughts.
[542]
This is basically my brain dump location.
[547]
My weekly schedule with my son,
[549]
especially because we've been safe at home,
[551]
and we were doing a lot of his schooling from home
[554]
and then my goals.
[558]
So each thing on this board is a little bit
[562]
of what we were talking about earlier in the video.
[565]
Having a dedicated space
[567]
and organization to each element of your life
[571]
is going to help combat some of that overwhelm,
[573]
anxiety and stress.
[575]
It also keeps you accountable to the task
[579]
and things you're supposed to be working on,
[581]
the things that are a priority.
[583]
The things that matter most to you,
[584]
the things that you should be exerting the most energy
[586]
and time on in your day.
[589]
Having that organized schedule is really, really important.
[592]
Now this year was a little bit different
[595]
with the COVID pandemic.
[597]
I learned firsthand, I am not a teacher,
[600]
at least not when it comes to my son.
[603]
I had a lot of stress and anxiety
[606]
about trying to juggle work
[608]
and be present with my son for that when he needed me most.
[612]
And that was to become really the educator
[615]
in his life during that time.
[617]
My solution to that was creating our weekly schedule,
[622]
where we were on task.
[624]
And it still allowed me to plan time in my day for work.
[628]
Now, if you're working eight-to-five,
[630]
or maybe you are at home now
[632]
because you're not working from your normal location
[635]
at your day job,
[637]
then setting up some type of weekly schedule in your life
[641]
will really help with that.
[643]
The next thing we're going to look at is my writing desk.
[645]
Now I know we talked about having a dedicated plan.
[650]
Now I use, and we'll just move my workbook out of the way,
[654]
I use the Live Rich Planner.
[657]
This helps with my work/life balance 100%.
[663]
So it allows me to literally plan out every area of my life.
[667]
Now this is my week from the 13th to the 19th.
[670]
But if we look at my weekly view,
[672]
this is my weekly view for this week.
[675]
Remember how I was talking about finding
[677]
and making sure that you're spending time and energy
[680]
on the things that make you happy as an individual,
[682]
being the best version of yourself
[684]
so you can be the best person for others.
[688]
Mine looks like this: I just block out
[691]
a dedicated time in my day for myself.
[695]
And as you can see, most of the time that's working out.
[699]
So I have a dedicated plan,
[701]
time set aside to make sure that these things
[704]
are taken care of.
[705]
Now, I obviously, like I have my cleaning,
[708]
I have our meal plans, but I have those dedicated spaces
[712]
in my organized schedule to do those things.
[715]
Having a planner for me in my life
[718]
where I can do my brain dumps,
[719]
where I can organize my schedule,
[720]
where it can put the tasks that need to be taken care of,
[724]
it really does help.
[725]
And this even has all the different priority tasks
[729]
that I need to complete every single day.
[734]
And then of course, as you guys all know,
[737]
I also utilize to help with organizing my life,
[741]
I use the Budget by Paycheck Workbook,
[744]
and this handles the finance aspect of my life.
[748]
It's funny, a lot of people,
[750]
when they think about work/life balance,
[753]
they don't think about all the things that that entails.
[756]
I like to look at my life as not cut off portions
[761]
for each thing like planning, finances, mom, work, partner.
[769]
For me, those aren't all separated
[771]
and in their own thing.
[772]
To me, it's like they have open gates
[774]
and they leak out into other different areas.
[777]
They're all commingled.
[780]
And to be really good at say
[782]
something in your professional life,
[785]
the habits and skills that you learn there
[787]
also trickle into other areas
[790]
that you're wanting to improve your life, maybe finances.
[795]
You bring those skills and habits that you learn in one area
[798]
to other areas of your life.
[800]
And really embracing that, like for me,
[804]
when I think about and worry about work/life balance,
[807]
I don't think, oh, just being a good mom
[809]
or being a good coworker.
[812]
I have to think about
[813]
every other little aspect of my life that comes into it.
[818]
So those are just some of the things that I implement
[821]
into my own life to help with work/life balance.
