Russia's military faces Ukrainian resistance - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
as we saw Russia's military is making
[2]
advances in Ukraine but has suffered
[4]
significant casualties since invading
[6]
two weeks ago for more I want to bring
[8]
in Jason Beardsley Jason is a national
[11]
security expert and national executive
[13]
director at the association of the U.S
[15]
Navy he's also a former Green Beret
[17]
Jason it's great to have you as you know
[20]
Russia's military is significantly
[22]
larger than Ukraine's but still these
[25]
casualties are staggering
[27]
how might the impact morale of Russian
[30]
troops
[31]
uh thank you for having me it impacts
[34]
the morale tremendously and I think
[36]
David Martin laid out a great case in 20
[38]
years in Iraq you know we we lost uh six
[41]
seven thousand or so and here they are
[43]
at about six and it's probably higher
[44]
than that this is really ripped through
[47]
the Russian army the morale there is low
[49]
there's a lot of conscripts that were in
[51]
this engagement without knowing they
[53]
were going to war uh those are the
[54]
reports on the ground they appear to be
[56]
true in addition to that we can tell by
[58]
the Readiness of the machines the
[60]
equipment the vehicles they were not
[62]
prepared for this they're they're
[63]
finding themselves without gasoline
[65]
without food without you know comfort
[67]
and Aid and enemy territory and the
[69]
ukrainians have been used to fighting
[71]
bear in mind for since 2014 the
[74]
ukrainians have rotated uh their
[76]
soldiers back and forth to the Don boss
[78]
region so they've got real world
[80]
experience with the Russians this is
[82]
making uh the Russians look like they
[84]
gambled and the gamble looks like a loss
[86]
Jason you know putting this into
[88]
perspective then how much do you believe
[90]
Vladimir Putin is willing to lose to
[93]
ultimately win this war
[96]
well that is a great question from
[98]
Vladimir Putin's optic it looks like he
[101]
was always interested in a shock and awe
[104]
campaign that would scare zelinski and
[106]
Company out of the country and then he
[108]
could install a puppet regime what I
[110]
think he's willing to do is kind of
[111]
negotiate his way at the end of this
[113]
back to control of the Don bass that's
[116]
the Eastern Province region so he's got
[118]
that land bridge connection to Crimea I
[121]
think that's what his chief objective
[122]
here is uh but I think he got a little
[125]
bit uh in front of his skis on this one
[127]
and now he's got to convince the Duma
[129]
around him in the Kremlin uh that this
[131]
is worth staying in the fight that's why
[133]
you're seeing these desperation moves in
[136]
cities like Mario bowl or down as
[138]
they're headed towards mikalayev and
[140]
kharkiv and places like that these are
[142]
desperation attempts the Army has
[144]
stalled out it's winter time the tanks
[146]
are bogged down in the mud ukrainians
[148]
have put up a fierce fight and uh look
[151]
for that to continue speaking of
[152]
strategy Russia has also been ramping up
[154]
attacks on crucial Port City cities in
[156]
Ukraine can you walk us through and
[159]
elaborate more on the strategy by Russia
[161]
there
[163]
right yeah that's a great question so
[164]
along the southern Rim there you've got
[166]
a number of cities that control uh ports
[168]
so bringing in supplies and material
[170]
Goods Odessa is the next one caresan was
[173]
on the uh the Water there they owned the
[175]
Crimean uh Peninsula that sits out in
[178]
the Black Sea so for them to split their
[180]
forces now and to take out Odessa is
[182]
going to actually reduce the number of
[184]
combat forces that they can Flex to the
[187]
north along the upper river headed
[189]
towards zaparizia and kharkiv in other
[192]
words they have a decision to make to
[193]
split their forces and go left and right
[195]
east and west or maintain their forces
[198]
and try to take out Odessa with the
[200]
hopes of choking off any of Ukraine
[203]
Naval supplies but bear this in mind the
[205]
ukrainians are not resupplying
[207]
themselves from the water so this is not
[210]
necessarily an effective move in a
[212]
campaign that's relying on resupply
[215]
lines from Poland while also relying on
[217]
Battlefield recovery that's when the
[219]
Russian equipment goes into the hands of
[221]
ukrainians and the Ukraine unions turn
[223]
that around on the Russian so the port
[226]
it's somewhat important but the the
[228]
ukrainians are not relying on that in
[230]
this war right now
[232]
as we heard Jason and David Martin's
[235]
piece the ukrainians are making good use
[237]
of anti-tank weapons they're also
[239]
fighting on home turf what else is
[242]
working well for them
[244]
so those two are huge favors for them
[247]
I've talked about the three to one ratio
[249]
sometimes it's five to one if you're a
[251]
Defender Defending Your Homeland and you
[254]
have uh one to every third of theirs
[256]
you're going to put up a great fight so
[258]
their numbers are in their favor the
[260]
terrain as you point out the weather but
[263]
mostly what's happening in their favors
[264]
the Russian army is not good at this and
[266]
I want to point out something you don't
[268]
hear a lot about Vladimir Putin is a KGB
[270]
agent he's used to deception operations
[273]
and clandestine operations and strike
[275]
This Is War this is open War he is not a
[278]
general he has no military experience
[280]
the Russians the most experienced
[281]
they've got is in places like Syria
[283]
those are small War operations so they
[286]
are not good at this and by the way
[288]
nobody's been good at this since World
[290]
War II taking a city is not easy and
[293]
when we did it last Baghdad Kabul
[295]
Mogadishu we ourselves the United States
[299]
Americans found ourselves at the
[301]
vulnerabilities of the insurgencies
[303]
guerrilla warfare IED campaign sniper
[306]
attacks so this means all the advantages
[309]
go to the the folks in defense that's
[311]
the ukrainians all right Jason Beardsley
[314]
put it into perspective for us thank you
[315]
so much for your time
[317]
thanks
