Channel: The Balancing Act

[6]
(music).
[7]
You can't wear it, drive it, or even eat it, but
[8]
it's just as important as clothes, a car, and food.
[11]
I'm talking about insurance.
[12]
While most of us don't necessarily
[13]
want to spend money on it, it's an investment we all need to
[17]
make.
[18]
So what's right for you, your car, and your family?
[20]
It takes some knowhow.
[22]
Here to help better understand insurance is
[24]
the Senior Vice President of personal lines from Selective
[27]
Insurance, Mr. Allen Anderson.
[29]
Good morning.
[30]
Good morning.
[31]
Thanks for being here.
[32]
Thanks for having me.
[33]
So let's talk about insurance, again, you say
[34]
it and people go (sigh).
[35]
Bottom line, all policies are not
[38]
created equal, why?
[39]
Well so often the consumer thinks that
[41]
the main thing they want to focus on is price, because they
[43]
assume all the policies are the same, but the fact is they
[46]
aren't all created the same, and quite often with low prices
[49]
policies come less coverage, lower options, and higher
[53]
deductibles, and those are things you don't want to find
[55]
out about at the time that you submit a claim.
[58]
You want to know about them in advance.
[59]
So auto insurance, let's talk about that
[61]
specifically the car.
[62]
What should I consider when I need
[63]
that?
[64]
Well you do need to start out with your budget, you need
[66]
to understand what is it that you really can expect to pay,
[69]
what is it you can afford to pay, but then you need to sit
[71]
down and talk to an independent agent about what your options
[74]
are and what your choices are and what your needs are.
[77]
Let's face it, the average consumer
[78]
doesn't want to or need to understand the difference
[81]
between liability insurance, personal injury protection,
[86]
comprehensive coverage- It just gets so convoluted.
[89]
Absolutely.
[90]
So you want to have a trusted advisor that you can talk to to
[91]
answer those questions.
[92]
Discounts, when it comes to auto insurance that I can consider
[94]
and do?
[95]
There are some standard ones, driver safety courses,
[98]
good student discount for those of you that have good students
[100]
in your household, that can save you a lot of money.
[103]
At Selective we have some discounts also if
[105]
you choose to pay your premium in one payment or two as opposed
[108]
to monthly installments, that can save you some money.
[110]
We also have a discount if you get your
[112]
quote in advance of your effective date, that can save
[114]
you some money.
[115]
Those are things that you can do to save money
[116]
without reducing coverage.
[117]
Home owners insurance, let's talk
[119]
about that now, that's a big one.
[120]
Yes it is.
[121]
And here in Florida it's huge and expensive.
[124]
What should I consider there?
[125]
So let's look at an example, lets'
[126]
say you have a pool or an aluminum fence around your yard
[129]
or a patio for example.
[131]
Okay.
[132]
And a tree falls on that.
[133]
You need to think about is your
[134]
insurance company going to pay to fully replace and repair
[138]
those items, or are they gonna give you some depreciated
[141]
amount?
[142]
So a company like ours, we have options for you to
[145]
choose from if you have those items that will pay the full
[147]
replacement cost.
[148]
Again those are things you want to talk
[150]
about up front, but sit down with your agent because on
[152]
homeowners there's so many options to choose from.
[154]
Water back up, large lost deductible
[156]
waivers, those are all things you need to try to consider in
[158]
your coverage choices.
[160]
What about discounts when I'm looking
[161]
into a homeowners policy?
[162]
Many of the discounts that you get on
[164]
auto also apply to your homeowners policy.
[167]
You can save a fair amount of money on your
[168]
homeowners policy by choosing a higher deductible, but you want
[171]
to make sure that that's something that you're ready to
[173]
handle at the time that the claim comes.
[175]
Okay.
[176]
But one of the big discounts that people
[177]
miss out on is putting those policies together with one
[180]
company.
[181]
So we offer a discount of up to 20% on both the auto
[184]
and the home if you put the policies together with one
[187]
company.
[188]
We also have discounts for medical professionals,
[190]
education professionals, so again, talk to your agent about
[192]
everything that goes on in your life so they can help you.
[194]
What about if you have a smoke alarm
[196]
which I have or a burglar alarm?
[198]
Absolutely.
[199]
Those kind of things.
[200]
Absolutely, if you have something that reports,
[201]
certainly, to a central station that where somebody's going to
[203]
call the police automatically, that'll have significant savings
[205]
as well.
[206]
So it's little things- It all adds up.
[207]
That's exactly right.
[208]
All right, and if you rent, because a lot of people
[209]
rent today, sometimes I think it's not worth it to have
[213]
insurance, but I have a feeling it is.
[215]
It absolutely is.
[216]
Really?
[217]
Why?
[218]
I tell my friends who rent, 'go home and take a look around
[219]
your apartment.'
[220]
And look at everything that you love, that's
[222]
yours.
[223]
And imagine replacing it all tomorrow.
[224]
Your TV, your furniture, your clothes, your
[226]
shoes, area rugs, everything.
[229]
That's all gonna add up.
[231]
And renters insurance is actually
[233]
pretty affordable.
[234]
And it's not maybe your home- in other words
[236]
you don't own it, but everything inside of it- Right, you're
[237]
covering all your personal belongings.
[239]
Okay, flood insurance.
[241]
That's a big one, here in Florida it's necessary.
[243]
We have hurricanes as well, you know what we went through after
[246]
Andrew, but I think flood insurance applies to everyone
[248]
now in the country.
[249]
It is the #1 disaster in America today.
[253]
Really?
[254]
In all 50 states.
[255]
Look at the news after the last few
[257]
years.
[258]
It's flooded all across the country and not just coastal
[261]
areas.
[262]
It's inland- Did you see the house that was floating in
[263]
the water that was on fire?
[264]
That was horrible.
[266]
Imagine watching your home on television float
[268]
down the river.
[269]
That's exactly right.
[270]
And people don't often think that they need flood
[272]
insurance until it's too late.
[273]
But it's affordable, it can help you rebuild your home and your
[276]
life after a devastating event.
[278]
The other thing that people often don't understand is that
[281]
it often doesn't go into effect until 30 days after you purchase
[284]
it.
[285]
So you need to make sure you get it now.
[287]
So Allen, for someone, let's say myself,
[289]
looking into car insurance, home insurance, do I go to a company
[292]
directly, or do you recommend I go to an independent agent?
[296]
I would recommend that you talk to
[297]
an independent agent.
[298]
Why so?
[299]
Because they can sit down with you, talk to you about what's
[301]
going in your life, the coverage needs that you have, the options
[303]
you have to choose from, and have a conversation with you
[306]
about your needs.
[307]
And the best thing about an independent agent
[308]
is that they represent multiple companies.
[311]
They can provide you information for multiple
[313]
companies- So you don't feel like they're out for just one.
[315]
Absolutely, there's not just one choice.
[316]
Little bit more trust there, one on one.
[319]
Personal time and they can help me understand
[320]
it.
[321]
That's exactly right.
[322]
The options for that balance between
[323]
price and coverage.
[325]
And what's good for you.
[326]
And what's good for you.
[327]
I love that.
