Amazon just started a delivery van war - YouTube

Channel: Donut Media

[0]
- The year of our Lord, 2022 is primed to be
[2]
a massive year for electric vehicles.
[5]
A new generation of EV trucks and SUVs,
[7]
along with a gaggle of sedans and coupes
[9]
will all be hitting the market.
[11]
However, there's a special model in rapid production
[14]
that may surprise you.
[15]
Delivery vans.
[16]
Yes, you heard that right.
[17]
Those boxy rascals bombing around our neighborhood
[20]
are as much a priority for some auto manufacturers
[23]
as any other EV model.
[25]
The major reason for this?
[26]
One Jeffrey "Preston" Bezos.
[29]
Space cowboy wants vans.
[31]
Lots and lots of vans.
[33]
So many in fact, that on January 5th Amazon announced
[36]
that they're collaborating with Stellantis
[38]
to manufacture thousands of EV delivery vehicles
[41]
for Bezos' massive fleet.
[43]
The fact that this is a high dollar agreement is news enough
[46]
but the deal also made headlines
[48]
because it had an immediate negative impact
[51]
on last year's Cinderella EV truck maker, Rivian Motors.
[55]
What's crazy is that Amazon is a major investor in Rivian
[58]
but with this delivery van pivot,
[60]
Wall Street enthusiasm for the startup
[62]
has significantly waned.
[64]
All this drama makes a guy wonder,
[66]
what's really going on over at Amazon?
[68]
Will Rivian be able to compete now that
[70]
legacy auto makers are hitting the EV market?
[72]
And by the way, what the hell is Stellantis?
[78]
- Breathe in and out, good.
[81]
Mindfulness and controlled breathing are great practices

[110]
Namaste, my dudes.
[112]
- [Deep Voice] (whispering) Namaste, James.
[114]
- What? Who said that?
[116]
- We all know that whenever Amazon makes a move,
[118]
it usually affects thousands of people and tons of money
[121]
and the recent shakeup in their automotive vision
[124]
is no exception.
[125]
Amazon was vital to Rivian's rise, pumping over
[128]
a billion big ones into the startup over the last few years.
[131]
This led to Rivian bringing the first
[132]
fully-electric pickup truck to the marketplace.
[135]
2022 motor trend truck of the year, the R1T.
[139]
A big stipulation of the investment was that Rivian
[142]
crank out a hundred thousand delivery vans
[144]
for Bezos by 2025.
[146]
This massive order, along with their impressive numbers
[149]
of R1T pre-orders led to a wave of Silicon valley
[152]
and Wall Street buzz that culminated in Rivian's
[154]
wildly successful IPO last November.
[157]
But as weeks have gone on, we've seen Rivian's stock prices
[160]
significantly drop, which many of you mentioned
[163]
in the comments on the the last video we did on Rivian.
[165]
Peaking at $172 a share just days after they went public,
[169]
they now hover around 60 at the time we're shooting this
[171]
with no obvious sounds of bouncing back.
[174]
A major reason for this financial dive
[174]
is that they just got a bigger, stronger, richer
[179]
van-producing step-sibling, Stellantis.
[182]
Never heard of Stellantis?
[183]
Well, don't be too hard on yourself
[185]
because the company is less than a year old.
[187]
Actually, company is probably the wrong word.
[191]
Multinational automotive conglomerate is more like it.
[194]
Yes, what sounds like a supplement or waterpark
[197]
is actually a Netherlands-based corporation
[199]
that represents 14 different brands
[201]
including Dodge, Alfa Romeo and Maserati.
[204]
Just think of them as the shiny new Fiat Chrysler
[206]
and the fourth largest automaker in the world.
[209]
Now let's be clear, this is not Amazon's
[210]
first dance with Stellantis.
[212]
They've been providing Bezos
[213]
with thousands of commercial vehicles
[214]
in the U.S and Europe since 2018.
[217]
This new announcement was centered around vehicle software,
[220]
specifically in-car dashboard software and cloud services.
[223]
The platform has been dubbed the STLA smart (beep) pit
[226]
and is expected to run in millions of Stellantis vehicles
[229]
starting in 2024.
[231]
The idea is that by using AI enhanced and Alexa-enabled
[234]
voice assistance, the smart (beep) pit will integrate
[237]
with customers digital profiles to create
[239]
a personalized in-vehicle experience.
[242]
For example, when your ex-wife's new husband
[245]
takes your kids on vacation in his Chrysler Pacifica,
[249]
he might use the family trip planner
[251]
which will recommend entertainment, restaurants
[254]
and other fun activities along the drive.
[257]
(sighs)
[259]
Let's say you need to get outta town...
[261]
to collect your thoughts.
[262]
Way, way out of town, alone in the wilderness.
[265]
New Jeeps are expected to feature a digital coach
[268]
to help calibrate the vehicle and optimize performance
[271]
before you head off-road.
[273]
This all sounds pretty harmless, right?
[274]
I mean, an Alexa in a Dodge shouldn't spell doom for Rivian.
[278]
So let's figure out what's making this deal
[280]
such for the baby brand.
[282]
Well, Bezos currently has 70,000 delivery vehicles
[285]
on the road, with his last mile program
[287]
calling for hundreds of thousands more by 2030.
[291]
Last mile delivery makes up 53%
[293]
of Amazon's shipment expenses, a number sure to rise
[296]
considering their stated long-term goals
[299]
and beyond the obvious environmental benefits,
[301]
consumer reports included that in the long run,
[304]
EVs can cost 10 to 40% less than their gas powered peers.
[308]
This potential savings is a huge incentive
[310]
for Bezos to transition to an all EV fleet even faster,
[313]
not to mention how much that larger van Armada
[316]
will bolster his competitive advantage.
[318]
Quote, "No matter how you look at it,
[320]
the massive lifetime savings of EVs
[322]
could be a game changer."
[323]
says consumer reports' Chris Harto,
[325]
quote, "As battery prices and technology improve
[328]
and prices come down, it's only going to get better."
[330]
All this means that 2022 is pretty much guaranteed
[333]
to be a record breaking year in terms of
[335]
sheer number of EV vans produced.
[337]
Specifically, Stellantises'... Stellantis'?
[340]
Stellantis' battery electric Ram ProMaster,
[341]
which Bezos will be the first commercial customer
[347]
when it rolls off the line in 2023.
[349]
The ProMasters' expected to offer a range
[351]
of around 200 miles and Stellantis says
[353]
they were creating software with input from Amazon
[356]
before this deal was even announced.
[357]
This new gen van will probably have similar features
[360]
to Stellantis' already running in Europe delivery EV,
[363]
the Fiat Ducato.
[365]
Active driving assist, a 360 degree camera
[367]
and a bunch of advanced safety features
[369]
like traffic sign recognition,
[371]
full speed forward collision warning
[373]
and drowsiness detection are expected to lend
[375]
a helping into the brave souls driving these mothers.
[378]
See, this is what made Rivian investors
[380]
quake in their boots.
[382]
They were basically like, "What the hell happened
[384]
to the hundred thousand vans Rivian was supposed to make?
[386]
Why is Stellantis suddenly in the mix?
[388]
Something must be terribly wrong!
[391]
But let's think about this for a second, folks.
[393]
It'd be truly insane for a company as large as Amazon
[396]
to hinge their automotive future on one company alone.
[399]
Amazon makes millions of deliveries every year,
[402]
so if there's a hitch with one of their EV making partners,
[405]
it makes total sense to have another manufacturer
[408]
in the bull pen.
[409]
Let's also keep in mind that Rivian didn't convince Bezos
[411]
to invest because of a delivery van concept.
[414]
It was their revolutionary pickup truck.
[416]
Only a few short months ago, Edmunds raved that quote,
[419]
"The R1T is the quickest and best-handling truck
[422]
we've ever tested." while MotorTrend said that it's, quote,
[424]
"The most remarkable truck we've ever driven."
[427]
Out of over 70,000 R1T pre-orders,
[430]
only 920 have been delivered so far
[433]
at the time of this recording.
[434]
Think about when more hit the streets
[435]
and people can judge them by their actual performance
[438]
rather than stock market websites.
[440]
A little while ago, I had the pleasure of getting behind
[442]
the wheel of R1T and I can promise you that
[444]
the chatter about these things is only gonna get louder.
[447]
You might think of gadgets when you hear all-electric truck
[450]
but Rivian's commitment to practicality over gimmicky tech
[453]
is obvious the second you sit down in one.
[455]
Now that's not to say there isn't a slick trick or two
[457]
because there are many, I'm just saying it's nice
[459]
to not immediately feel like I sat down in an arcade.
[462]
Man, remember arcades?
[464]
We had one and then it shut down 'cause nobody went to it.
[466]
Unlike the friggin' internet cafe featured in Teslas,
[469]
the R1T has only two low-profile screens.
[472]
One is your cluster, the other controls
[473]
literally everything else in the vehicle.
[475]
While I do miss having knobs to turn for climate control
[478]
because I'm a 56 year old man,
[479]
I was impressed by the incredibly
[481]
user-friendly touchscreen display.
[483]
You can tweak cornering, take off, sport mode,
[485]
shock absorption, and ground clearance all on the fly.
[488]
It's very, very impressive,
[489]
and as far as power goes,
[491]
we definitely weren't disappointed.
[492]
As you can see in this video,
[494]
the zero to 60 in three-ish seconds is absolutely no joke.
[497]
That's me with my stomach in my throat.
[499]
Among other pleasant surprises were the heartbeat blinkers.
[502]
Instead of the click click click,
[504]
and basically every car blinker ever made,
[505]
Rivian created a sound inspired by the human heart.
[508]
This was an oddly satisfying feature
[511]
and just one of the sneaky, cool things that made
[513]
the R1T driving experience super memorable.
[515]
Now I didn't take this puppy mountain climbing in Yosemite,
[518]
but after an hour of testing the truck around in town
[520]
we can say it's definitely worth the buzz.
[522]
Literally everything on the truck worked
[524]
and everyone we met at Rivian has been very knowledgeable,
[526]
friendly and most importantly, passionate.
[529]
2022 will be a legendary EV year,
[532]
particularly when it comes to trucks and SUVs.
[534]
It'll be awesome to see how the R1T stacks up
[537]
against competition like the Ford lightning and GM's Hummer,
[540]
and all this van drama aside,
[542]
there's still plenty to be excited when it comes to Rivian.
[545]
They say they're expanding annual production capacity
[547]
from 150 to 200,000 vehicles a year
[550]
and have plans to have their second plant
[551]
rolling in Georgia by 2024,
[553]
and keep in mind that Amazon hasn't sold
[555]
any of their 20% stake in Rivian, saying quote,
[558]
"We always knew that our ambitious sustainability goals
[561]
in our last mile operations would require
[563]
multiple electric delivery van providers.
[566]
We continue to be excited about our relationship with Rivian
[569]
and this doesn't change anything about our investment,
[571]
collaboration or order size and timing."
[574]
Look, I'm not gonna pretend that Wheelhouse is
[575]
a stock market show, but we do know about cars,
[578]
which is why after driving the R1T,
[580]
I think investor reaction to the Stellantis deal
[582]
is a little over dramatic.
[584]
Amazon is gonna buy a tidal wave of delivery EVs
[586]
over the next several years and as a result,
[588]
Rivian still stands to generate billions of dollars in cash
[591]
even with this new Stellantis deal.
[593]
So while this Wall Street news understandably
[595]
started some nervous Rivian fans,
[597]
you can probably chill out and enjoy this year's
[600]
new wave of thrilling EVs with the rest of us.
[603]
As they say, a rising tide lifts all ships
[606]
and if Amazon's buying a bunch, bunch, bunch of EV vans,
[612]
that's quite a big tide.
[614]
Thank you very much for watching wheelhouse.
[615]
We're gonna take a break from the stock market,
[618]
investing kind of videos over the next few weeks.
[622]
We've done a lot of 'em it feels like.
