Channel: TD Ameritrade Network
[0]
let's talk about costco earnings the 360
[2]
round is ready and we have some great
[4]
guests with us kim forest founder chief
[7]
investment officer at boca capital
[9]
partners and fred reichfield held a bain
[12]
cat bane and company and also a fellow
[15]
there an author whose new book winning
[18]
on purpose the unbeatable strategy of
[21]
loving customers is available now
[24]
fred there's your book
[26]
congratulations on that i hope you do
[28]
very well with that we're glad to show
[30]
it for you okay let's get to all about
[32]
costco so kim i'll start with you costco
[35]
is having an incredible day right so
[37]
it's up four five percent it's having
[38]
its best day in since last april until
[41]
april 2020 i mean kim
[45]
so it's all because of good earnings and
[47]
i guess good enough uh forecasts looking
[50]
forward to drive people into the arms of
[53]
uh buying costco and i i think that's
[57]
right uh there was a lot of concern
[59]
around whether or not they could get the
[61]
products they need off of boats um
[65]
on the west coast and into their
[68]
warehouses and it did look like the
[70]
company reported that it was really
[72]
tough but they did it
[74]
looking for this quarter though i the
[76]
company did warn that some of their
[79]
products may not come in until after
[81]
christmas so the question to um
[84]
investors is this do you think it's
[86]
going to affect the overall quarters
[88]
sales and today it looks like the
[91]
investors are saying no it won't affect
[93]
the overall quarter for the customer or
[96]
for costco
[97]
okay all right and fred fred reich held
[101]
you are looking also about customer
[103]
satisfaction and you think that's a good
[105]
thing for costco tell us more about that
[108]
costco is one of those very special
[110]
companies there are only 10 of the
[112]
companies in the world who believe
[113]
customers are the primary stakeholder
[115]
that their primary duty is to enrich
[117]
customer lives costco is one of those
[120]
and they are among the companies that i
[122]
invest in buy and hold and i've tripled
[124]
the market over the last decade
[126]
that kind of performance doesn't come
[128]
from following little short-term
[131]
jibs and jabs it means always acting in
[133]
the customer's best interest and and it
[135]
has served them so well and i think as
[137]
long as they stay on that path they
[139]
represent one of the great companies
[142]
would you still add fred to your
[144]
holdings year after year
[146]
i do i mean i
[148]
jim senegal the founder went through his
[151]
philosophy with me about a year ago
[154]
and they are still healing to that path
[156]
they a they exist for their members
[160]
they have a profit a business model that
[163]
makes its targets simply through their
[165]
membership fees so they can then
[167]
dedicate all of their innovation their
[169]
creativity their energy to making
[171]
customers lives better it's brilliant
[174]
best place to work in retailing
[177]
yeah
[178]
what else could you want
[180]
yeah yeah now i see what you're saying
[182]
kim you know i was uh
[184]
listening to an analyst who was looking
[186]
at multiples and noting things like bjs
[189]
that had half the multiple ulta that had
[191]
makeup and still had a lot of high
[193]
margins and growth patterns going
[195]
forward what does that mean to you when
[197]
you look at costco and you see the net
[199]
sales and same store sales on the rise
[201]
but the outlook for 2022 and beyond
[205]
well i i agree with jim that having a
[208]
good product and in this case selling to
[211]
products that customers want is what
[212]
they do i think that's brilliant
[215]
um i also looked at the growth in free
[218]
cash flow and that says they love their
[221]
shareholders as well they might love
[223]
their customers and their employees but
[225]
they're showing the love with generating
[227]
that so i think that looks very well for
[229]
the company now in this first quarter
[232]
i'm guessing that some sales will slip
[235]
because you know they're just not going
[236]
to have products for christmas and i'm
[238]
not a believer that if somebody didn't
[240]
get
[241]
you know a new ipad or maybe not an ipad
[244]
but some kind of electronic widget that
[247]
you'd buy at costco for the holiday but
[249]
you're going to go back in january and
[251]
buy it i i don't believe that but um
[255]
any dip in price that this company might
[257]
have i agree with your other guests that
[260]
you should seriously look at it
[262]
and because it does seem to put cli um
[266]
not just customers but shareholders high
[268]
on its list of who it thinks is
[271]
important and i really like that
[275]
and then okay so that's you're making a
[277]
good point there kim and then fred as we
[279]
take a look at something the membership
[280]
fees and there's been talk of the
[283]
steeple analysts announcing
[284]
that he believes costco will announce a
[287]
membership the increase of roughly eight
[289]
percent maybe over the next 12 months so
[292]
is this okay does this just bring in a
[295]
higher end chopper does this uh filter
[298]
out some folks maybe it's not so great
[300]
what are your thoughts if they because
[302]
they're made they're making money on the
[304]
membership fees 946 million we're
[306]
showing it right now
[307]
fred
[309]
i don't know the answer to that specific
[311]
question but i'll tell you how you'll
[312]
figure out the answer i invented a
[314]
metric called the net promoter score
[317]
that
[318]
most of the world now uses and at bain
[320]
and company we measure net promoter
[321]
score for competitors across the
[323]
industry
[324]
as a science because we know the company
[326]
with the highest net promoter score is
[328]
the one that has customer love and is
[330]
going to power through the ups and downs
[332]
of each quarter
[334]
right now costco is the highest net
[335]
promoter score in all of the retailing
[337]
sector
[338]
if that nps which is how much their
[341]
customers love them how much they'd
[343]
recommend them to a friend if that
[345]
remains at the top
[346]
i'm a buyer every quarter going forward
[351]
i see what you're saying well it's great
[353]
to see you both my net promoter score
[355]
for the two of you is top notch the best
[358]
it could be thank you both very very
[359]
much it was great to see it
[361]
yeah oh 10 okay i didn't know what the
[364]
the parameters were it is great to see
[366]
you both i really appreciate it a great
[368]
break down there and a look at costco
[369]
which has obviously had a nice run kim
[371]
forrest of boca capital partners and
[374]
fred reich held bain and company thank
[377]
you both very very much we'll continue
[378]
to watch costco which we said today is
[380]
um on the move with the largest percent
[382]
increase since april of 2020 so we'll
[385]
watch that one and a lot of overweight
[387]
ratings folks right i saw wells fargo
[390]
600 uh
[392]
also deutsche bank 482 and jpmorgan 560.
[396]
so you did have some of the analysts
[397]
jumping on board thank you
[418]
you
