[4]
Welcome back to the World According to Briggs
[6]
and a video about money.
[8]
Have you ever wanted to know
[9]
how much the average family makes in different states?
[12]
Who hasn't, right?
[13]
You're sitting at home wondering if moving to another state
[16]
might mean more money,
[17]
tired of eating that Nut Master
[18]
and hoping you could maybe get up
[20]
to some of that top-shelf Nutella,
[22]
maybe moving out of one of the states on this list
[24]
will help you achieve your life goal of Nutella all the way.
[28]
If you're thinking about relocating, this video's for you.
[31]
The good news is, the U.S. census
[32]
just came out with the latest numbers.
[34]
In today's video, we're looking at the states
[36]
with the lowest average yearly income for families.
[39]
This year's list has a few surprises
[41]
and a few of the states that are notorious
[43]
for having low wages, well, they're back again.
[46]
A city or state with a lower-than-average income
[48]
for its people leads to a few different things
[51]
and it kind of gives you an outlook on what to expect
[53]
if you do move there.
[54]
Lower-than-average income means poverty
[56]
is a real issue for that location, crime is gonna be higher.
[59]
Less income normally means fewer tax dollars,
[62]
and that normally leads to less public services
[64]
from the local and state governments.
[66]
There's so much more that goes into this,
[67]
but none of you showed up for economics according to Briggs.
[70]
Couple things you should know about this list.
[72]
The highest state average annual income is $88,702.
[77]
I'd like to tell you what state
[79]
has the highest average income, but we're gonna save that
[81]
when we do the other side of this list
[83]
and look at the states with the highest average income
[86]
for a family.
[87]
Just so you can gauge where these states sit,
[89]
the average household income for 2020
[92]
according to the U.S. Census Bureau was $65,712 a year.
[96]
That's for the entire family, not just one person.
[98]
All right, let's take a look.
[99]
(timer ticking)
[100]
Number 10, South Carolina.
[102]
South Carolina has a population
[104]
of just over 5 million residents.
[107]
And about 14% of them live in poverty.
[110]
As we've seen in other videos,
[111]
South Carolina is a nice place to live
[113]
and has some really nice cities.
[115]
The downside is,
[116]
a lot of their small towns in rural communities
[119]
are really close to the poverty line
[121]
or well below the poverty line.
[123]
From 2019 to 2020, South Carolina's average household income
[127]
dropped a little bit, like most states,
[129]
because of the pandemic.
[130]
They went from a little over 56,000 on average to 53,199.
[136]
(timer ticking)
[137]
Number nine, Tennessee.
[139]
Tennessee has always had some serious poverty issues
[142]
and they're not really known for knocking it out of the park
[144]
when it comes to salaries.
[145]
They do have a lot of people with really unrealistic views
[147]
about what's going on in their own state.
[148]
I get emails all the time where they think I'm undercutting
[151]
how many Californians are moving there.
[153]
One guy tried to explain to me
[155]
that they gained over a million people last year
[157]
all from California.
[158]
I tried to explain to Ned how wrong he was,
[161]
but he wasn't buying it.
[163]
Stats, figures, videos, didn't sway old Ned.
[165]
He knew I didn't.
[167]
Again, a little under 14% of Tennessee residents
[171]
live below the poverty line
[172]
and their average annual household income is about $53,320.
[178]
Can't even afford much Jack Daniels on that kind of money.
[180]
You end up in the woods making your own.
[182]
(timer ticking)
[183]
Number eight, Oklahoma.
[185]
We just did a video on tornadoes,
[186]
and I was surprised to find
[188]
that Oklahoma wasn't in the top 10
[190]
for the average amount of tornadoes.
[192]
It was really weird.
[193]
You'd expect Oklahoma to have a bunch.
[194]
No, they don't have a bunch,
[196]
and they don't have a bunch of people
[197]
making over $60,000 a year either.
[199]
Oddly enough, a lot of them are able to afford
[201]
really big belt buckles for some reason.
[203]
15.2% of Oklahoma's population lives below the poverty line.
[208]
They also have one of the highest rates of residents
[210]
on public assistance as you can imagine,
[212]
and their average annual household income is $52,919.
[217]
(timer ticking)
[218]
Number seven, Kentucky.
[220]
If this one surprised you, I wanna congratulate you
[223]
on not keeping up with current events since, I don't know,
[225]
before prohibition or something like that.
[227]
The Bluegrass State
[228]
has a long and colorful history with poverty.
[231]
Currently, about 16.3% of their population
[234]
is living below the poverty line.
[236]
In 2020, the average annual income in Kentucky was $50,589.
[242]
That's it.
[243]
On that kind of money,
[243]
you probably have to get a second hand large hat
[245]
for the Kentucky Derby.
[247]
I always marvel those ridiculously large hats
[249]
women wear at that thing.
[251]
And before you do, stop typing,
[252]
I know not everyone wears one of those hats.
[254]
They're still ridiculous!
[256]
(timer ticking)
[257]
Number six, Alabama.
[259]
Alabama's a lot like South Carolina.
[260]
They have some areas that are really nice
[262]
and some cities that make a lot of money.
[264]
The downside is, they got a lot of rural communities
[267]
and small towns that don't make squat.
[269]
15.5% of Alabama's population lives below the poverty line.
[273]
And their average annual income is $50,536.
[278]
(timer ticking)
[279]
Number five, New Mexico.
[281]
The Land of Enchantment
[282]
always seems to show up on negative lists,
[284]
especially when you're talking about poverty, low incomes,
[287]
crime, and filming locations
[290]
for places where they might have to go save Matt Damon.
[292]
Watch "The Martian".
[293]
Good movie, but it looks a lot like New Mexico.
[295]
I mean, it's not all bad, they have great sunsets.
[297]
Too bad, 18.2% of the population
[300]
lives below the poverty line
[301]
and their median annual income is $49,754.
[307]
(timer ticking)
[308]
Number four, Louisiana.
[310]
Or as a guy I was in the army with
[311]
used to call it, whoisiana.
[313]
Louisiana isn't like a pillar of American society
[316]
when it comes to high wages.
[318]
Like every state, they have a few places
[319]
where you could make a good buck, but the reality is,
[322]
they are a state with very few high-paying jobs.
[326]
And Q, person in the comment section that says,
[327]
"I have a high-paying job and I'm in Louisiana."
[330]
Congratulations, I wasn't thinking about you
[332]
when I made the video.
[333]
19% of Louisiana's population lives below the poverty line.
[337]
They call Louisiana the Sportsman's Paradise
[339]
'cause they got a lot of hunting, a lot of fishing,
[341]
things like that.
[342]
But on the other hand,
[342]
they have a lot of people hunting and fishing
[344]
just to eat dinner.
[345]
The average annual income in Louisiana is $49,469 a year.
[351]
(timer ticking)
[352]
Number three, Arkansas.
[354]
Hey look, everyone, it's our old friend, Arkansas.
[356]
Arkansas is a frequent flyer on these negative lists.
[359]
So if you see any video with least, worst, or dangerous,
[363]
chances are you're gonna see Arkansas.
[366]
The poverty rate in Arkansas is 16.2%.
[369]
That's not the absolute worst,
[371]
but they are in the top 10 for poverty rate.
[373]
But to be perfectly honest,
[375]
I do believe Arkansas is at the beginning of a turnaround.
[379]
And I think in the coming decade or so,
[381]
you'll see a big change in that state.
[383]
That's just me kind of guessing from what I've seen.
[385]
So don't hold me to it 10 years from now.
[387]
The average annual income in Arkansas is $47,597.
[393]
(timer ticking)
[394]
Number two, West Virginia.
[396]
The mountain state comes in number two
[398]
when it comes to the lowest wages.
[399]
If you watch this channel long enough
[401]
or just about anyone that does lists
[402]
or videos about West Virginia,
[404]
you know that they have had a terrible run of luck,
[408]
I'd say in the last 100 years.
[410]
It's only gotten worse in the last couple of decades
[412]
with the loss of coal mining jobs and the opioid crisis.
[416]
But I still love Charleston.
[418]
If I ever wanted to live in a state
[419]
where people are okay with bats living in their attic,
[422]
I'd probably move to West Virginia.
[424]
This one's too bad because I know people from West Virginia,
[426]
I know about the people from West Virginia,
[428]
and I know what the state looks like.
[430]
It has beautiful people and beautiful land.
[433]
They've just had incredibly bad luck.
[435]
West Virginia has the luck
[436]
of a dude proposing on the jumbotron
[439]
at a major league baseball game,
[440]
as the girl says no and walks away,
[442]
he gets hit in the back of the head with a foul ball.
[444]
The good news, it's cheap to live there,
[446]
so you get cheap land and beautiful land for the most part.
[449]
The percentage of people living below the poverty line
[452]
in West Virginia is 16%.
[454]
Their average annual income is $46,711.
[460]
All right, every one, before we get to number one,
[463]
don't forget, we have another channel called On This Day.
[465]
There's a link down below.
[466]
There's also a link for Amazon Audibles.
[469]
That is an affiliate link, they're not sponsoring the video.
[472]
But if you drive to work or anything like that,
[474]
this is something great to have.
[476]
I use it all the time 'cause I travel all the time.
[478]
All right, on to number one.
[479]
(timer ticking)
[480]
And number one, Mississippi.
[483]
Yes, it is Mississippi, The Magnolia State.
[486]
They're at number one again
[487]
when it comes to something negative.
[488]
It's always like a wrestling match between them in Arkansas.
[491]
Who's got the most suckage going on?
[493]
One thing I do like about Mississippi,
[495]
my family's from there, part of my family at least,
[497]
and I like the fact that
[499]
when I say the word Mississippi differently,
[502]
'cause I say it Mississippi, all the time,
[503]
Oh my God, my comment section just lights up.
[506]
It's kind of a fun experience to tell you the truth.
[508]
Mississippi has a long, long, long history
[512]
of poverty and low wages.
[514]
Last time Mississippi was in the top 10 for best states,
[518]
they were part of the Confederacy
[519]
and there was only 11 states.
[521]
19.6% of Mississippi's population
[524]
lives below the poverty line,
[526]
and their average annual income is only $45,081.
[532]
That's two people trying to make it.
[534]
Luckily for Mississippi,
[535]
they've got an incredibly low cost living
[537]
and their land is some of the cheapest in the nation.
[540]
(gentle music)
[543]
All right, everyone, that's today's list.
[545]
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
[546]
Hope you got some information out of it.
[548]
Don't forget to leave a comment,
[549]
give the video a big thumbs up.
[550]
Everybody have a great day.
[551]
Be nice to each other.
