(digital jingle)
[1]
- [Jake] Hey, and we're
back with another episode of
[3]
"Before You Buy",
[4]
that show where we give you
some straight up gameplay
[6]
and our first impressions of
the latest games releasing.
[9]
As usual, it's me, Jake.
[11]
And today we're talking about
"Pokemon Legends: Arceus".
[14]
It's finally here.
[15]
It's been a long time coming.
[16]
This is what some "Pokemon" fans
[18]
have been looking for for a long time.
[20]
A big shakeup and a fully 3D adventure
[23]
in a massive open-ended world
[25]
where you capture and battle Pokemon
[27]
in a more fully realized way.
[29]
While Game Freak has
dipped their toes in this
[31]
with some previous games,
[33]
"Arceus" kind of marks
a completely new step
[36]
for the "Pokemon" franchise.
[38]
Now, it's definitely not perfect,
[40]
but we've all been playing
it here on the team
[42]
and have absolutely been
having a ton of fun.
[45]
The world has its issues
[47]
and there's a bit of an emphasis on grind
[49]
from the early hours
where it starts a bit slow
[51]
to the end game stuff,
[53]
but the open world
concept, the exploration,
[56]
and the way catching and battling
[58]
and progression with the
Pokedex building works,
[61]
yeah, the graphics aren't great,
[63]
but the game is really
cool and fun and fresh.
[66]
And I think it's what the series needed.
[68]
And just so you know,
before we go any further,
[70]
this footage was captured
through a Switch OLED
[73]
running docked on a TV
[75]
and we're keeping it as
spoiler free as possible,
[78]
but that's tricky though.
[79]
I know some "Pokemon" fans
[80]
are very sensitive to
seeing certain things,
[83]
gameplay elements, anything.
[84]
So if you're big on
spoilers, keep that in mind.
[86]
You know, we still wanna show
different points of the game
[89]
and various levels of progress.
[91]
So getting into it,
[92]
the basic step is that
you create your character
[95]
and you end up in the Hisui region.
[97]
You don't know how or why,
[99]
but you quickly meet the local people
[101]
and get drafted into their sort of
[103]
Pokemon discovery expedition.
[105]
As was revealed in that original
[107]
official reveal trailer thing,
[109]
this is a much earlier point
[111]
in the span of "Pokemon" lore and history.
[114]
Technology is scarce, life is simpler,
[117]
and people frankly don't
know too much about Pokemon.
[120]
So there's a bit of fun
that comes with all that.
[123]
It's different.
[124]
Your goals involve helping the
people settling in this land
[127]
to learn to live with
and understand Pokemon.
[130]
So it's up to you to battle and catch
[132]
and build out a big Pokedex.
[134]
Now, the general flow has you
going along story missions,
[138]
but there's a lot of stuff
[140]
to mess around with in the meantime.
[141]
Villagers and locals will
give you side quests things
[144]
called Requests that
usually net you some rewards
[146]
or just help the town or
community in some way,
[149]
but what you're mostly
doing is getting out there
[152]
and doing the "Pokemon" thing.
[153]
You're catching, you're leveling them up,
[156]
you're getting stronger, and
building out the Pokedex.
[158]
This is the main focus
[160]
and everything requires you to really do
[163]
a lot of what you may have already done.
[165]
You don't catch a Pokemon
once and that's it.
[168]
You catch them multiple times
[170]
to complete a certain Pokedex objective.
[173]
One in a long, long list of them.
[175]
Like say battle a Pokemon three times.
[177]
Catch it three times.
[179]
Then catch it six times.
[180]
Catch different variants,
catch a male and a female,
[182]
catch one at night.
[183]
So every time you catch
or defeat a Pokemon
[186]
or a new Pokemon, it's
really still exciting
[188]
because you're accomplishing
a bunch of things
[190]
in your Pokedex and then
cashing in all those things,
[193]
so you're always feeling
like you're being rewarded.
[195]
You're always progressing
towards a new rank in your group,
[198]
which serves kind of how
badges from gym leaders
[201]
in previous games helped you
work with stronger Pokemon
[204]
and stuff like that, the perks.
[206]
Now, along with that,
[207]
there's also a bunch of
crafting and recipes to learn
[210]
and work on as well.
[211]
And your Pokemon are also
rewarded with XP and stuff,
[216]
just not only from
battling, but also catching.
[218]
Now, this all goes hand in
hand with the open world stuff.
[221]
You venture around and
find Pokemon in real time,
[224]
just hanging out in the environment.
[226]
And it's more involved
than in "Sword and Shield".
[229]
You know, they're floating in the water,
[230]
they're walking around,
[231]
they're flying around, they're hiding.
[233]
And you can hide in grass
and creep up on them
[236]
and try to catch them or battle them,
[238]
and battles go down in real time,
[240]
right there in the environment.
[241]
And it doesn't get old.
[243]
And for me, yes, this is the "Pokemon"
[246]
you'd always kind of been hoping to see.
[248]
It feels much more real and cool,
[251]
just like how you've
conjured it up in your head
[253]
probably since you were a kid.
[255]
Now, sometimes the
Pokemon wandering around
[257]
in the environment seem kind
of dumb and kind of dopey.
[260]
Not much going on in the AI
department, which is a bummer,
[263]
but some of them can see you and run away,
[266]
or some of them can get pissed
[267]
and try and attack your character,
[269]
so you can dodge out of the way
[270]
before tossing out a pokeball
with a Pokemon to battle them.
[273]
Now, battles themselves
are pretty straightforward.
[275]
The newest thing is the addition
[277]
of the ability to change how much power
[279]
you put into your moves.
[280]
So if your Pokemon has battled enough
[282]
and mastered a certain move,
[284]
you will have the ability to
add more power into an attack,
[287]
or less than normal power into an attack.
[290]
This is for various reasons.
[292]
Put more behind your attack to
hopefully cause more damage,
[295]
but you'll likely lose a turn.
[297]
Put less power into an attack,
[300]
maybe you're trying to catch a
Pokemon, something like that,
[302]
and also maybe have the ability
to get a second attack in
[305]
and a second turn.
[306]
I'm kind of explaining it
terribly simply for time sake,
[310]
but it can shake things
up a bit in a good way
[312]
that isn't overly complicated,
[313]
but lets you strategize a bit more
[315]
and your ability to see who moves next,
[318]
and it all makes it just
feel a bit more RPG-ish.
[322]
Also, there's an added level of freedom
[324]
in learning new moves and
swapping them in and out.
[327]
It makes things a bit more
consistently interesting.
[330]
Just go to town and learn some new moves
[333]
and swap them in and jump
back out in the field.
[335]
It's nice.
[336]
But battles can be pretty challenging too.
[339]
I've noticed the last few "Pokemon" games
[340]
have stepped up the challenge
a bit here and there,
[343]
and in "Arceus" we found
it pretty noticeable.
[345]
It's not the hardest
game to cruise through,
[347]
but still, you will be
challenged from time to time.
[349]
Especially because you can find bigger,
[351]
more powerful red-eyed
Pokemon out in the environment
[354]
that can just frankly
really kick your ass.
[357]
But it's very satisfying.
[358]
They feel almost like little bosses.
[360]
The Pokemon in your party
[361]
are also just used for various things,
[363]
like throw them at a tree
[364]
to get them to shake some berries out,
[366]
or smash a rock for crafting resources,
[369]
or to a fly or ride like a mount.
[372]
It really does a good
job of selling that whole
[374]
"Pokemon and humans working
together on an adventure"
[378]
type thing.
[379]
It's really cool, and
it makes getting around
[381]
and exploring and crafting
and grinding a bit more fun.
[384]
Does it get a little
repetitive here and there
[386]
with the catching and battling constantly?
[389]
Yeah, but it always feels
like you're stumbling across
[392]
a new Pokemon and you're getting
that little adrenaline rush
[395]
or you're always learning something else.
[397]
And you're always progressing,
[398]
you're always building that deck,
[399]
you're always gaining, so I liked it.
[402]
Unfortunately, the world
itself is lifeless.
[405]
You probably knew I was gonna say this
[407]
if you've seen any gameplay of it before.
[409]
It's really big and it's
fun to venture through
[413]
and stumble upon the Pokemon, like I said,
[414]
but other than some shifts in biomes,
[417]
it's just so weird and dead.
[420]
Part of the reason comes from the fact
[422]
that it doesn't look that great,
especially docked to a TV.
[425]
I feel like it's like the
"Final Fantasy VII" world map.
[428]
I'm not talking the new
"Final Fantasy VII",
[429]
I'm talking about the old one.
[430]
As much as there's changes in elevation,
[432]
it still just looks flat and weird.
[434]
But at least the colors pop,
and credit where credit is due.
[437]
The sky box itself is amazing
[439]
and the colors and sunsets
and sunrise look fantastic,
[443]
but otherwise it's just a drab landscape
[445]
with not much going on,
[446]
and it kind of hurts the
experience a little bit,
[448]
especially 'cause like
there's not a lot of dungeons
[451]
or cool hidden areas.
[452]
There's some, but not a lot.
[454]
And it's just rough-looking.
[455]
I'm disappointed in Game Freak here.
[457]
You know, you guys have
a bajillion dollars,
[459]
you should amp this up a bit.
[461]
Graphics aren't everything, though,
[462]
but it's not about the graphics.
[464]
It's about the feel and the atmosphere
[466]
to get you engaged in the game,
[467]
and there isn't really enough.
[469]
For some people, I think the boring areas
[471]
and the constant grinding
might get on your nerves
[473]
or turn you off,
[474]
but we found ourselves at
least consistently entertained
[477]
despite these problems,
even being aware of them.
[480]
We just like "Pokemon".
[481]
The end game after you roll credits
[483]
ends up giving you a bunch more game
[485]
and more battles and stuff
to do, so that's good,
[487]
but my only other issue is that
[490]
along with the world being lifeless,
[492]
the game just needs to
lighten up in general
[494]
and just get a little
bit more entertaining.
[496]
I like being able to see my Pokemon
[498]
and ride them and take photos with them
[500]
and engage with townspeople,
[501]
but I just didn't really like
any of the characters too much
[505]
aside from the Hisui clan
faction leader guy and girl.
[509]
It's not that they don't try here,
[511]
it's just that it didn't
click with me personally.
[513]
The game doesn't feel
as lighthearted and fun
[516]
and quirky as it could.
[518]
Now, that also goes
with finding cool caves
[520]
or spooky paths or dungeons,
[522]
like those types of memorable moments.
[524]
There's really not a lot of it here.
[526]
Here and there, yeah, but it's
more about just the catching,
[530]
and the building the dex, and
the grinding and the training.
[533]
It's a lot more straightforward here.
[535]
The game has a slow start overall
[537]
and it does get better, but yeah.
[539]
And, again, to reiterate, since
I don't have time to explain
[543]
every single new element,
[544]
overall, it's a really
good "Pokemon" game.
[546]
Battles are fun.
[547]
Catching is fun.
[548]
And for some folks, like me
in this specific instance,
[552]
the grind can get you hooked.
[553]
Even if the world is
boring, exploring it is fun
[556]
because of the interaction
with the wild Pokemon,
[559]
and your own Pokemon helping you out.
[562]
It feels closer to that fully
realized thing more than ever,
[566]
and most importantly, dude, it's fresh.
[568]
I've pretty much enjoyed
every "Pokemon" game
[571]
up until this point,
[572]
but I was still starting to feel
[573]
this creeping sense of it being
kind of stale and whatever,
[576]
and I think this is exactly
what the series needed
[580]
straight up.
[581]
Even with the notable substantial
flaws, it's a fresh game
[585]
and I'm looking forward to
this being the foundation
[588]
for "Pokemon" games
moving forward, hopefully.
[590]
I really hope so, because the next game
[593]
could improve the world and exploration
[595]
and more dungeon stuff
and even more story,
[598]
and it could be God tier.
[600]
But if you're a "Pokemon" fan,
[602]
this is worth experiencing,
who am I kidding?
[604]
You're probably already
planning on trying it.
[606]
If you've never played a "Pokemon" game,
[607]
some people have asked me,
[609]
I don't know if this is
the one to start with.
[611]
Maybe start with something more casual,
[613]
like "Pokemon: Let's Go"
or something like that,
[615]
but "Arceus" goes outside
of its comfort zone
[618]
and it tries something new.
[620]
It stumbles here and there,
[621]
but it gets a lot of points
for being fresh and interesting
[625]
and fun to play.
[626]
So there you have it.
[627]
That's "Pokemon: Arceus".
[628]
It's pretty simple,
[629]
but I'm gonna be playing
this one for a long time.
[631]
I think "Pokemon" fans definitely are.
[633]
There's a lot to chew on.
[634]
There's some compelling
stuff in the end game.
[636]
Some of it takes a lot of work
to see it all, but it's cool,
[639]
and I can't wait to see
where things go next.
[641]
But that's how this goes.
[642]
I give you guys some pros, some cons,
[644]
and some personal opinion,
[645]
and now I wanna hear yours.
[647]
What do you think of this
game so far if you jumped in?
[649]
What's your favorite
Pokemon that you've caught
[650]
and built up in the game?
[652]
Do you like the way the
real-time catching works?
[654]
Do you like sneaking around?
[655]
Let's talk about anything
"Pokemon Legends: Arceus"
[657]
down in the comments.
[658]
Now, if this helped you out
[659]
and steered you one way or the other,
[660]
or just, I don't know,
gave you some information,
[662]
all you got to do is
click the like button.
[664]
It really, really helps us
out and we'd appreciate it.
[667]
But as always, thank
you guys for watching.
[669]
I'm Jake Baldino.
[670]
See you next time.
[671]
