Surfside Condo Collapse: New Video Proves Garage Column Fell - YouTube
Channel: jeffostroff
[0]
in this video continuing our
[2]
investigation into the champlain tower
[4]
south condo collapse in surfside miami
[7]
we have our own exclusive video that we
[10]
shot across the street in the daytime
[12]
and we are going to duplicate that now
[14]
famous
[14]
tourist video that showed the champlain
[17]
tower south condominium collapse
[20]
five minutes after they shot this video
[23]
so we're going to examine it and put to
[25]
rest all of the debates that have arisen
[28]
out of this
[29]
as to which column fell first or didn't
[31]
fall first or whether there was rubble
[34]
in the garage or what but we are going
[36]
to analyze this today with our own
[38]
recreation and come to a conclusive
[41]
answer
[42]
so by now everybody has probably seen
[44]
this world famous
[46]
tourist video shot five minutes before
[49]
the condo collapsed
[51]
and everybody has tried to make
[52]
screenshots of course of the
[54]
now famous video and then a friend of
[57]
our channel kenneth lyons he actually
[59]
made this photoshop enhanced version of
[61]
it here and from there many of us have
[64]
tried to analyze to see what was going
[65]
on
[66]
and here you can see on this circle part
[69]
of the image is where we noticed hey it
[71]
looks like there's a column missing and
[73]
then we try to determine which column it
[74]
was that is missing and that's why this
[76]
video has become probably the single
[79]
most valuable piece of intel in this
[81]
entire investigation okay so in case you
[84]
haven't seen that now famous tourist
[86]
video let me show you it's a seven
[88]
second clip basically
[89]
and it's showing the
[92]
the view five minutes before the
[94]
collapse and there's the broken
[95]
sprinkler line and it's gushing water
[97]
down
[97]
okay so i finally couldn't take it
[100]
anymore folks i drove over there myself
[102]
i wanted to get my own video that i was
[104]
in 100 control of instead of people
[107]
conjecturing over something shot at
[109]
night where you can't make out what's
[110]
what so i drove over to the north towers
[113]
this is the champlain towers north and
[116]
they are both very similar so a lot of
[118]
people think that it's the carbon copy
[120]
but it really isn't this was built a
[122]
couple of years later you can see this
[124]
is the
[125]
champlain tower south the one that
[127]
collapsed the sister building to it as
[130]
we call it is this one right here
[131]
champlain towers north almost the same
[134]
but the problem is as you you can see
[136]
here the lot of land that the
[139]
champlain tower south sits on is bigger
[142]
and you have much more land right here
[143]
in front of the building so there's more
[146]
spaces for the parking garage so we have
[148]
a bigger parking garage here and also
[150]
the champlain tower south here has 12
[153]
units per floor whereas the champlain
[156]
towers north here only has 10 units per
[158]
floor you can see if you look at the
[160]
building see how this has a short stub
[162]
but come down here and this has like an
[163]
extra section here that's because
[165]
there's two extra units per floor so
[167]
they're not quite exactly the same but
[170]
most of the garage especially in this
[172]
section has the same floor plan we can
[175]
safely use the floor plan and the
[177]
pictures and everything from the north
[178]
tower here looking down the ramp we know
[180]
that when we look in here we're supposed
[182]
to see one column two column
[185]
three columns
[187]
and four columns nobody can deny that so
[190]
i tried to duplicate the same view here
[192]
that the tourists got when they were
[194]
shooting from across the street okay so
[195]
here we are standing across the street
[197]
just like the tourist was
[199]
and we're going to shoot down into the
[201]
garage
[203]
and zoom all the way down in there
[206]
okay she was probably more or less right
[209]
here
[210]
because you can shoot down the ramp
[213]
there
[213]
and as you shoot down the ramp
[216]
you can see the column there at the
[218]
bottom
[219]
oh and here comes a car out now
[225]
so there's your perfect view looking
[227]
deep down in there
[229]
now look real closely you can see all
[231]
the way to the back
[233]
you can see that back wall and you can
[234]
see all the bicycles lined up in front
[236]
of it
[237]
of your columns now i don't even know if
[239]
the parking spaces
[241]
are enumerated the same
[244]
there goes that gate
[247]
back down
[252]
looking at my garage map that i've been
[254]
building up over the last few months the
[256]
point of view is from way up here up top
[259]
and we're looking down
[261]
this way at an angle so we can see
[264]
here's the first column there's one
[266]
here's the second column two
[269]
here's the third column three
[271]
now here's where the problem starts and
[274]
so what you see is a bunch of rubble
[277]
piled up in the middle of the driveway
[279]
it's not on the ramp everybody thinks
[281]
it's on the ramp it's not you actually
[284]
can't see the ramp because this is the
[286]
top of it where it meets the street and
[288]
it slopes down as you can see here um
[290]
about 60 feet that's about how long the
[293]
ramp is so you really don't see the ramp
[295]
but what you can see is the floor beyond
[297]
the ramp here so as everybody analyzes
[300]
we're looking at this adhering it to the
[302]
floor plan thinking wait a minute i'm
[304]
supposed to see four columns i see one
[306]
here i see two here i see a third one
[309]
here behind the pipe that's shooting out
[311]
the water but there's supposed to be a
[312]
fourth one here where is it and remember
[314]
they're going to get squeezed together
[316]
so they look like they're right next to
[317]
each other i've got a lot of experience
[319]
in photography when i was a 10 year old
[320]
kid in boston i used to go into the
[322]
newspaper with my dad and my grandfather
[324]
every saturday and i'd work in the
[325]
darkroom and then i eventually got my
[327]
own dark room i used to develop my own
[329]
pictures in my basement in my house in
[331]
boston and so i've done a lot of study
[333]
with photography and lenses and nikons
[335]
and telephoto lenses i've done a lot of
[338]
shooting at sports events and this is a
[341]
phenomenon that happens here that's
[342]
called lens compression and so what
[344]
happens is when you zoom in with a
[346]
telephoto lens you're getting everything
[348]
that's in the distance gets flattened so
[351]
that's called lens compression you can
[352]
see there's a 20 foot distance between
[355]
right here which is the column for space
[357]
number 14 and then this is the column
[359]
for space number 27 and on different
[361]
screen grabs depending on you you'll be
[363]
able to actually see the 27 right on
[365]
there but there should be another one
[367]
right over here because these should be
[369]
20 feet apart if you're going down the
[371]
line see if you go back and i'm going to
[374]
show this to you upside down if you come
[376]
back and look each one of these columns
[378]
is approximately 20 feet apart so if
[380]
you're looking at an angle here these
[382]
four columns are going to look like
[383]
they're side by side going left to right
[385]
and so here's the first one the second
[387]
one should be 20 feet away there should
[389]
be another one about 20 feet away
[391]
similarly spaced in between and then
[393]
this last one another 20 feet away so in
[396]
in other words we should be looking 60
[398]
feet down the ramp to this column and
[399]
then 20 feet 20 feet 20 feet and let me
[402]
just point out something to you this
[404]
column right here is the the
[408]
southernmost border of the building so
[410]
everything up to this point is inside
[412]
the footprint of the building once you
[414]
get beyond this to where the rubble pile
[416]
is you're now outside and beyond the
[418]
southern end of the building even though
[420]
you really can't tell everything looks
[421]
like it's all flattened together so
[423]
inside this circle we think we're
[424]
missing a column well let's go take a
[426]
look at that what i did here was i took
[427]
this screenshot from the tourist video
[430]
and identified where all four of the
[432]
columns are supposed to go and i label
[433]
them here's your first one like we
[435]
mentioned the space 14 m8 the space
[438]
number 27 m10 and then this next one
[441]
here would be the dividing line between
[443]
space 27 and 28 so i've always called
[446]
this one
[447]
27-28 and it's column m11.1 and then the
[451]
last one here would be for space number
[453]
28 so m13.1 so now how do we know that
[456]
i'm accurate how do we know these are in
[458]
the correct place well because i know
[459]
where three of them are but the third
[460]
one is the one that i claim is missing
[463]
okay so what i do here now is i have
[465]
this video overlay from the screenshot
[468]
of my video that i shot on the third now
[471]
watch this
[472]
as it morphs in you see that all four of
[475]
these columns line up right so that's
[478]
how we know
[480]
we're supposed to have that third column
[481]
right there so here see look there's 20
[484]
feet 40 feet 60 feet there is no other
[487]
column that's straight down this line
[489]
because you have a space over here which
[491]
is 40 and actually
[493]
on the north garage
[495]
that space matches what we have if you
[498]
look remember we're looking down the
[500]
garage here and we look all the way down
[503]
the line and we see
[505]
that one here that says 40 right here
[508]
which is just to the right of all of
[510]
these columns so
[511]
at least that part of the garage they
[513]
kept the numbering system the same so
[516]
coming back to the overlay you can see i
[517]
can keep going back and forth between
[519]
the two
[520]
so i know i'm correct you see i have
[523]
proven it a lot of people have been
[524]
saying oh there's no there's no column
[526]
there shouldn't be one but look at the
[528]
spacing between them and yeah it is
[531]
you should definitely see it and the
[532]
further away you get away from the front
[535]
try to pay attention to where my cursor
[537]
is the further away you get from the
[539]
front the closer the spacing will be
[541]
between
[542]
these columns because of the lens
[544]
compression from going telephoto mode
[547]
now watch this see
[550]
okay so we've already confirmed for us
[553]
now
[554]
that
[555]
this guy is missing
[557]
m11.1 why are we spending so much time
[560]
on this to to prove that this column is
[563]
missing this video
[565]
was shot five minutes before the whole
[568]
building collapsed this was shot at 1 18
[570]
a.m
[571]
and the building came down around 1 22
[574]
a.m
[575]
missing as a very valuable piece of
[576]
intelligence because it helps us
[579]
engineers kind of zoom in on what could
[582]
have caused this column to go down
[585]
so if i come back and look
[588]
at a screenshot from fiorello's garage
[590]
walkthrough that she shot a year ago see
[593]
this is what we're looking at we're
[594]
looking down the ramp and there's that
[596]
first column 14. this is the column for
[599]
space 27 and so this shows remember like
[602]
i said every column in here is 20 feet
[605]
apart throughout this garage and then
[606]
here's the beam that connects
[609]
m
[609]
10
[610]
here or m 9.1 as some people call it but
[613]
this is the one that connects 27 to 27
[616]
28 over here
[618]
and and this everything is starting to
[620]
align with what we're saying because
[623]
this is the area that had the most
[624]
damage on the ceiling i think and and
[627]
you can see paint peeling because it's
[628]
moist you can see the beam here isn't
[630]
doing so hot the paint can't stick to it
[633]
and we even showed in one of our other
[635]
screenshots that this beam is bowing
[638]
at the bottom let me stop this right
[640]
here
[641]
this is column
[643]
m13.1 which is also known as we call it
[646]
28 because it's for space 28 right here
[650]
and that's the column for space 29 and
[652]
then here is our m11.1 which we call
[656]
27-28 let me show you where all of these
[658]
are here
[660]
i think you'll find this easier
[662]
okay so here's an overhead
[664]
shot that i took from one of the nist
[666]
drone videos remember the terrace was
[668]
over here viewing looking down this way
[671]
so again here's that same thing m8 which
[673]
is column 14. this right here is m 9.1
[676]
or we call it m10 this is
[679]
space 27 is right here
[681]
and then space 28 is right here and the
[684]
column that missing column is right here
[687]
now they're digging through just the
[688]
last couple of feet of rubble here but
[690]
if you notice if you look around the
[692]
entire site
[694]
every one of these columns pretty much
[696]
stood their ground the rebar is coming
[698]
fairly straight up with no problem but
[702]
there's nothing left of this guy right
[704]
here why is that i mean we're down on
[706]
the floor right now we're they're just
[708]
about down on the floor and i don't know
[710]
if these are part of it or if they're
[711]
just leftovers but you know everything
[713]
lines up here that this guy is missing
[716]
so this is a screenshot from my video
[719]
when i went down to the site last week
[721]
and shot directly into
[723]
the current status of the site here's
[726]
that space number 14 column at the
[728]
bottom of the ramp so the ramp is coming
[730]
down
[731]
sort of this way there's that side and
[733]
then here's the other side of the ramp
[734]
right
[735]
so 14 is here
[737]
and the space 27 column is over here now
[740]
you can see it much sharper from my
[741]
video that i mean look at me just came
[744]
right out of the ground there's no
[745]
damage down there it didn't get sheared
[747]
off and then here's another view where i
[749]
zoom out a little bit and here's that
[751]
same column 14
[753]
column 27.
[754]
here you can see now that the site's
[756]
been cleared
[757]
what's left there's like just a couple
[759]
of pieces maybe i'm not even sure if
[761]
it's one or two
[762]
of rebar that look like it's just
[764]
severely damaged and it it didn't look
[767]
like there was even enough for them to
[769]
cut it off at the measured painted four
[771]
foot level or so like they did with all
[773]
of these others see so that's why
[775]
everything keeps suspiciously pointing
[777]
back to this one and here's another
[779]
great example so you might recall seeing
[782]
this if you saw my video from about two
[783]
weeks ago where i
[785]
took the nist
[787]
drone video that they gave us on august
[789]
25th and i did my now famous overlay on
[793]
top of it with the all of the parking
[795]
spaces and the border of the building
[797]
and everything
[798]
showing you ground zero and so here's
[801]
that space 14 at the bottom of the ramp
[804]
27
[805]
m 11.1 that's missing and then 28 should
[808]
have been here i believe they cut a lot
[810]
of these other ones but anyway
[812]
it shows where the actual
[815]
rubble pile was so a lot of people on
[818]
the video think that the rubble pile is
[819]
on the ramp it's not the ramp ended back
[822]
over here so what you're looking at is
[824]
20 feet
[826]
likely about 40 feet away from the ramp
[828]
that's what that lens compression does
[830]
see it changes everything for you
[833]
but so this is where i showed where
[835]
ground zero was that's why i put this
[837]
thumbnail of the tourist video here to
[839]
show you what we were looking at you see
[841]
so everything we see here is beyond
[844]
this column and this column represents
[846]
the southernmost border of the building
[849]
and so everything beyond it is where the
[851]
rubble pile is
[853]
okay so looking back at our screen here
[855]
we can go back and forth and back and
[857]
forth
[858]
and make all the columns
[860]
what happened to the column now some
[862]
people have looked at this image and
[864]
said no that's the column there
[867]
and i'm looking at it no that that's not
[868]
the column because i can see black right
[870]
in the middle of it all the way through
[872]
it and then this right here is either
[875]
a planter or an air conditioner or
[877]
something everyone looks at this
[878]
photograph a different way some people
[881]
look at this thing here and they think
[882]
it's a washing machine but based on the
[885]
distance of how far it is a washing
[887]
machine would not be that huge that's
[888]
what people keep forgetting is is how
[891]
far away this really is
[893]
okay and a washing machine would not be
[896]
that big
[897]
so what is this thing
[899]
i think
[900]
it's possible that this is
[903]
the beam
[904]
that went from the column here 2728
[908]
over to 27.
[913]
or as we look back here in the video
[915]
it's this beam over here and let's take
[918]
a little bit closer walk over there i
[919]
want to see if we get a better shot
[920]
right there
[922]
see this is the beam that i think it is
[924]
and you've seen me mention this in early
[926]
july on my other video i talked about
[929]
this beam and i mentioned doesn't it
[931]
look suspicious how the bottom of this
[932]
thing is bowed
[934]
as if it's in tension right now so that
[937]
i thought was strange now it could have
[938]
been just the way they formed it when
[940]
they you know made all the plywood forms
[942]
and
[943]
poured the concrete and it's not lens
[946]
distortion because in any lens folks
[948]
you're not going to have distortion in
[950]
the middle of the picture and besides
[952]
you can see items above it that are
[953]
straight lines see
[955]
so there's no distortion in this area so
[957]
something is really weird
[960]
this is what's suspicious this is our
[962]
11.1 missing column right here
[966]
okay
[966]
he's the one that's missing right now
[969]
he's the one that i think was the first
[971]
one to go right here i think this is the
[973]
one that started it all
[976]
and this is the one that's right
[978]
directly beneath that planter and i've
[979]
showed you this many times in the past
[982]
if you look at my videos from july
[985]
you can see i showed you that and i also
[987]
showed you how it's possible that they
[990]
drove heavy equipment on the deck when
[993]
they were planting the palm trees and
[995]
that may have added stress
[998]
up here because that's right in this
[999]
area right up in here
[1001]
but you can notice how there's a lot of
[1002]
things going on here they have that
[1004]
shield over here because they had a lot
[1006]
of leaks
[1007]
so there's the view looking back up the
[1009]
ramp you see
[1010]
it's a 60 foot long ramp there
[1012]
and in case you're entertaining the idea
[1015]
that somebody came flying through here
[1016]
at 40 miles an hour or more you can't
[1020]
because you got to negotiate through
[1021]
this tight little fitting here and the
[1024]
signs everywhere telling you to be
[1025]
careful and you really have to go slow
[1026]
to get down because when i come back to
[1028]
it you can see right here here's where
[1030]
they put all of that corrugated plastic
[1032]
and this is in the space between this
[1035]
column and our m 11.1 column right here
[1038]
we kind of showed you all this back in
[1040]
or early june and the other thing is
[1042]
look how this is bubbling that's i think
[1044]
got water in it right there that paint
[1047]
so we just simply don't know and then
[1050]
remember i pointed this out on our video
[1052]
in july folks the one thing that i
[1054]
really didn't like here
[1056]
about this beam is it's set up in a
[1059]
shearing fashion instead of the beam
[1061]
being on top of the load where i think
[1064]
it should be
[1065]
here's that giant h beam that we've been
[1068]
talking about you see this right here
[1069]
this h beam right here
[1071]
notice how it's on top of
[1073]
all of its columns you see that and in
[1075]
fact all the other beams in this garage
[1077]
which i've mentioned before were on top
[1079]
of their columns and so coming back here
[1081]
and looking here's that that h beam
[1083]
right here see so fiorello was standing
[1085]
like right here shooting this way at the
[1087]
h beam where i just pointed to you where
[1089]
it was sitting on top of its
[1091]
respective columns but the beam that
[1092]
went between these two
[1094]
was bowed on the bottom seemed to be
[1097]
pretty damp because it had a lot of
[1098]
paint peeling on it and it was set up in
[1101]
a shearing fashion not
[1103]
poured over the top of these two
[1106]
okay now here is a a pretty good aerial
[1108]
shot that we got off of a briefing map
[1111]
so here's that look down the garage ramp
[1114]
down the ramp here to the end and there
[1117]
i indicated 14
[1118]
27 that second column was the
[1121]
southernmost border of the property and
[1124]
there's our column m11 so if it's
[1127]
connected remember there's beams all
[1129]
over the place if this one somehow
[1132]
fell down
[1133]
what's going to hold up the other end of
[1135]
this beam that was there and it's in a
[1137]
shearing fashion anyway so it's likely
[1139]
going to tear it down with it and then
[1142]
probably this column first to go and
[1144]
maybe this this one second so this is
[1147]
where the front of the building here
[1149]
started to just
[1150]
collapse down but this shows a great
[1153]
overhead view of exactly
[1155]
how these are all related and this right
[1158]
here is that column 40 that we saw in
[1160]
the background off to the right
[1162]
remember on that frame and we could see
[1164]
that 40 on on there that's 40 here
[1168]
so do you agree with our assessment of
[1170]
which column fell first let us know down
[1172]
in the comments what your particular
[1174]
theory is on what caused this condo to
[1177]
collapse and we'll put a link down in
[1179]

[1182]
